We had such an amazing time at White Horse in Austin! I went with my husband and my best friend, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. We all took turns leading during the lesson. The class itself was super encouraging and easy to follow, even for beginners like us. The instructor created such a positive, welcoming environment that made learning the two-step feel effortless. After class, watching the pros hit the dance floor was incredible--so much spinning and energy, it was honestly mesmerizing! The whole place just comes alive. White Horse is the quintessential Dive bar! It is located on the East Side in what appeared to be an old house. White Horse also has an outside patio. This is the second time that I visited White Horse. During Zumba class on Friday we learned that our Zumba instructor's brother plays the drums in a band and that he would be playing at White Horse on Friday night. So I met our Zumba instructor and friends at White Horse to listen to the band. Let me just say I am not a huge country western fan, but I do branch out every once in a while to listen to country. Please note the twangy country is not for me. The Shinglers were playing on Friday starting at 8 pm. I really liked this band and was drawn in by their addicting sounds. I even managed to dance a couple of times. Needless to say, my two stepping is pretty rusty. However, dancing is always fun! The cover charge was $10 cash. Cash is such a rarity any more. Fortunately, I had $12 with me. Drinks were $9 for top shelf, which is quite cheap. The bartender was friendly and fast. We stayed for the first of three sets and then departed for home. read more

One of the things my wife wanted to do for her 40th was go out dancing. Now remember we aren't from these parts.... This place was an absolute blast. Everybody there seemed like they were great dancers. We tried dancing some but we suck. My wife found out you can't say no when an older gentleman asks you to dance. So she ended up getting some free lessons. Live music was great. Staff is so nice. The patrons are so nice too. Met a group that was originally from philly area. Very unexpected. People just come up and talk to you. I loved how friendly and not on their phone people were. Totally different than philly. Came into town for my best friend's bachelorette trip and we knew one of the night's we would be stopping by The White Horse to learn how to two-step. With a cute theme of denim and diamonds, we got dressed up and headed out for a fun night that began at The White Horse. We were dropped off via uber and it was super easy to get inside with almost no line. Once inside, the place itself is a small-ish dive bar but has a great dance floor with folks that were already learning from the instructor. After grabbing a drink, we headed to the dance floor to learn a step... or two ;) The instructor was great and taught mainly on the stage and would call on folks to come on stage to help her demonstrate. I like how she called on people who seemed to be celebrating something like a birthday or bachelorette. It seems like there were a lot of people from out of town, especially since it was the weekends. The overall two-step class was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone visiting or in town! The regulars were also super friendly and would dance with people after the class is over. The bar itself was a normal dive bar with classic drinks and friendly enough bartenders. Since it was the weekend, they also had a vendor selling things at the front which I thought was cool since they had cool western-style rings and bolo ties. It's a bar with a live band and two stepping music is played not really a dance club/hall. There is a $10 cash cover to enter (atm is inside). This is not my type of scene but I came for a friend's birthday and tried to make the most of it, lights were dim, music was lively and there were a-lot of people enjoying themselves. The bathrooms weren't very clean!! If a business does not have clean bathrooms I'm less inclined to purchase food or drink because of the germs. I was able to dance with a few people but it seems like the very few advanced dancers gravitate towards the same 1-2 regulars. after a while I just wanted to dance alone and I did. :) I'll probably check out Mavericks again in Buda if I want a great two step dancing experience with a more friendly and diverse crowd!! read more

Came to learn to 2-step. Which can be intimidating given how good everyone here already was at it. We came early enough to grab a table but they seem to fill up early. Pretty friendly crowd/bartending staff, which encouraged us to try our hand at 2-stepping (not well). Cheap drinks, which helped. The band performing was surprisingly good so that was a treat. The only downside is the parking, which can be a bit difficult in this area (no fault of the bar itself). If you're looking for a night of dancing and music, this is a nice choice. read more

This is the epitome of what i'd call a dive bar. It was a bit early for a visit, before any music had started. So that probably affected my impression of the place. The beer selection was a bit limited and our seats at the bar were close to the bartender who gave quick service. We didn't eat anything as it really didn't seem to be set up for that. Doubt I'll be back unless there were a good entertainer on the stage. But as a quiet, laid back venue, it has a bit of appeal for those who might want to sip a cold one after work. read more

If you wanna ride, ride the White Horse. This is something like the #2 largest seller of Lone Star Beer consistently. Year after year, this place moves more of the National Beer of Texas than nearly ever other bar in the state. Just take that in for a moment before you enter this saloon. This place is so full of vintage Lone Star Beer advertising! Check out the lit signs, their awards, the posters. It's beautiful. No Line Dancing! This is a country kinda hole in the wall. When I went, I saw the epic S. Texas band, Garrett T Capps, which was awesome. The bathrooms aren't exactly clean, but it's Austin's eastside... Parking could be easier. They have a parking lot, but when I went, they'd roped it off and set up a live band. The bartenders are fast. They're experienced at cracking open Lone Stars. The stage looks like it's outta some sort of David Lynch movie. It's so pretty! My favorite thing about this bar is that they had Lone Star Beer served up cold when everyone else in town was running out. read more

This is the most corrupt horrible bar in all of Austin. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. For contex, they require a cover every weekend night, my wife and I tried to take money out of their ATM which (doesn't work for chase cards apparently) and since the withdrawal failed and said error (we have no issues anywhere else with the card) they told us we would not be allowed in, we used it at a bar prior and it seemed to be their ATM machine. Even tho all our friends were already inside. We asked if we could go grab our friends to pay the cover for us and they also told us no. We then got kicked out and were told we had to wait outside as they harassed us, yelled at the top of their lungs screaming into my wife's face and the whole experience was extremely out of line. The large guy in our photos pictured was screaming so close to her face spit was spraying her. The one with the long hair laughed the entire time. He laughed at her as she was trying to pull money out of the ATM and it failed. The most fucked up management and bar. Whoever runs this place should fire these two individuals. The most inappropriate interaction I've ever seen at anywhere in Austin. read more

The White Horse is awesome! Great Honky Tonk bar! We arrived at 9 and it was pretty slow, there were three couples dancing. We decided to wait until the new band got on stage at 10 and WOW, the whole atmosphere changed the minute the 2nd band hit their first note. Immediately the dance floor was packed. We couldn't figure out where all these people came from but later found out there's an outdoor area on the side you can chill at (with a food truck). This place was just like a movie, guys pulling a different girl to dance to every song. Everyone smiling, laughing, having a grand old time. Highly recommend!! I had a fun time at the White Horse. I went and saw a six piece live country band. They had chops and enjoyed the music. I am not a huge country fan yet love Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. I also love Gillian Welch and David Rawlings who are probably more alternative country. I love all genres of music though and enjoyed my evening here. The dance floor was packed and lively atmosphere so nice to see some local color. Recommended if in Austin looking to see some local live music. read more

The White Horse is a cool somewhat old school joint in a neat area of East Austin. If you want a bit of a traditional honky tonk feel, this is the place to go. We learned about The White Horse from a local chef we took a cooking class from. He informed us of the two step lessons that are available on Friday nights! We showed up a bit early and were able to grab a drink and relax a bit. The bartenders were pleasant enough and the beer was cold! They also had Maker's Mark and Knob Creek bourbon ON TAP! Something I had never seen before, and as a pretty big bourbon fan was pretty intriguing. By the time the dance lesson started there was a large group of people who had come to learn! The teacher was very good and taught us just enough that we could get out on the floor and not look too out of place! After the lessons we stayed a bit and listened to the band who was extremely good. A great spot to try something new and different while traveling to Austin! read more

My gf and I were out looking to get away from all our traveling circus companions for some live music and some dancin' and we stumbled upon this place. The music was great, the performers were so funny, bartenders were amazing, drinks were yummy and the locals/patrons were all so dang friendly! Pretty fun place. We came here for a bachelorette and it was fun. There was two step but no line dancing so if you don't have a partner you either had to find someone or not dance. The night I went they have two bands playing and one band took a long time to set up. I think this would have been a nice time to play some music for line dancing so everyone didn't just have to stand around and wait. But aside from that both bands were good. This was my first experience at a honky tonk and I'm hooked! First we were just wallflowers watching everyone else dance. The band was SO awesome and sounded amazing!! So good that we had to jump in and dance. This place has such a unique atmosphere, there's nothing this authentic in SoCal, not even close. It has inspired us to learn how to dance like this! What a fun place to go! We came here on a Sunday night because our friend Katelyn who's from Oklahoma wanted to go two-stepping in Texas! It's a very divey feeling bar with a very diverse crowd, full of dancers and spectators. They had live bands playing, one of them was Armadillo Road. It was such a vibe, don't know how else to explain it.
