Love the place! Its up close and personal! Last night I went to see ( Bob Schneider ) I'm not to sure he wasn't a little out of it? I feel like the Saxon Pub is an iconic staple to the Austin music scene. If those walls could talk I really feel like we would hear so much interesting history and music of course! I have been to The Saxon a handful of times to see some awesome musicians. My most recent visit I stopped on the night of my birthday to see the White Ghost Shivers and the Saddle Sores. It was such an entertaining and awesome show! The Saxon Pub crowd is usually pretty chill. People are there for the music and to have a few drinks. Every seat in the bar is a decent seat as well. The bartenders are always great. I really love the Saxon Pub and I hope they continue to be around for a long time. If you have never been here - then you must check it out! There is a cover but it is well worth it and remember that you are paying to see a musician that is probably doing this for a living. Love me some Saxon Pub on a week night! I've been going to Saxon since I came to Austin in 2001 and the talent they bring in never disappoints. It's such a small intimate stage that you can't help but really experience the musician's energy. Many great local bands have rolled through here over the time and I've been lucky to see them. Love that they added an outdoor seating area for those who need to break away from the sound or just chill in between sets. I took away a star since it gets a little too packed for my liking on the weekends or even for a big show. Guess that's the product of population growth but it takes away from the vibe a little. If you are coming to Austin to see what it has to offer, Saxon Pub is a must on your music list. read more

While I agree with some of the problems with the door man, I have to give 4 stars for a place where I can hear GREAT music, and still talk across the table. I'm tired of going to hear someone in a small bar and have to yell or simply not talk during the show. Saxon Pub keeps the music where you can enjoy, but not have to be silent with your date or others at the table. But the main thing you might miss if you do not try this place is a guy named Walt Wilkins on Wednesdays. I had never heard of him, and he totally blew us away. His songs are poetry and music unbelievably memorable. I'm amazed he is not been "discovered" yet. I bought his CD, and I have to tell you, he is much, much better in person. The band that followed him was pretty good as well, but Wilkins is a special treat. (He just needs someone to do a better job on his $20.00 DC!) read more

Saxon is a listening bar. I didn't realize there were music venues where dancing and clapping was ok and those where it was not ok. I love to dance if the music is good. I still don't like listening bars as much as other music venues. However sometimes you just want to chill, have a drink and listen to good music. We had a better experience this time. read more

Pretty solid bar to get a beer and catch some live music. I just saw David Grissom and Hector Ward & The Big Time here the other night. Cover was like 7 bucks or something, and the beers were 4 bucks each. They don't have anything out of the ordinary like Woodchuck or Landshark (to my chagrin), just your standard bar beers, plus a few local brews. The stage is kinda small, in a corner, but nothing too bad. Plenty of seating by the stage or in the back, for more intimate conversations. Plus the ambiance is just kinda neat, old wood and brick with little statues of knights and stuff. Not too far from Downtown either, on South Lamar. read more

It might be hard to find this joint, on a nondescript stretch of strip malls on South Lamar- if not for the fifteen foot tall armored knight standing guard in the parking lot. Though it looks like a car once rammed his left leg, the knight stands indomitable. May this haven for live music be as enduring as its armored sentry. There are typically two or three bands per night, and you can expect to find at least one good band any night of the week- provided you can appreciate a range of styles (old country, alt county, hot jazz, latin jazz, r & b, funk). During the occasional off-band's set, there's always the violent taxidermy or mini-sentries to look at; if you need to laugh uncontrollably at the occasional band combining delusions of greatness with mediocrity, you can always hide away in the back room, down a few steps from the main area. The back room is also a good spot for eavesdropping on the gambling table, where the likes of "Lil' Bit" and "Bullet" cackle wickedly at insider jokes and the various fortunes dealt out indiscriminately by sister luck. read more

Unfortunately we only stopped here for an afternoon beer and it was completely dark inside and (unbelievable for Texas) a little too file inside. Great place to see live music. I've been here a few times to catch some local acts. Reasonable cover charge to get in. Drinks are pretty standard price, around $4-5/pint. The bar itself is covered in dark wood. I liked that there was table service even during the music. The parking lot can get full very quickly. Get there early, but pay attention to the calendar to see who is playing before/after. I've been lucky enough to find a spot as soon as I pulled in the lot the past few times. read more

Last night was my second time here to see Bob Schneider and Lonelyland. This wasn't as good as the first time, too crowded and semi-rude and inattentive service, didn't see my waitress for the entire show and had to track her down to get my credit card back. Plus, if you're sitting in one of the reserved tables it's a hell of a battle to fight your way through the crowd to hit the restroom. I think they have happy hour until seven, didn't get there until later, so not sure about that. If you get there early, before Bob goes in around 8:30 you can pretty much sit anywhere you want, even the reserved tables. But once Bob goes on, they're going to make everybody get up and go out front and come through the door as they check your tickets. Sound quality, and seats were great, paid 25 on-line for them, love hearing the music, just last night was on the verge of being too chaotic. read more

This is a chilled and relaxed place. They have live bands playing on a regular basis but, sometimes I feel the cover charge is not really worth it. I have a huge issue when bars label themselves as pubs when their draught beer selection is small and poor. Furthermore, the three different beers that I tried, were warm; so much so that I did not finish even a full pint before having to discard the rest. I really can't give this place just one star because the ambience is very Austin-like, nor I can give them 3 because there are way too many better options nearby. read more

This is my idea of a perfect venue to check out local bands. I was so excited to find out Mickey and the Motorcars were playing during my first trip to Austin in February 2012!! This is dedicated to the bouncer and manager working the door last night for the Matt the Electrician/Bob Schneider show. I arrived early and made it in before the occupancy cut-off. My friends, however, waited 45 mintues, 5 people from the door, watching these guys let in anyone with a good story...from "My date is inside!" to "My friend just flew in from..." (I'll get to that jewel of an excuse in a minute.). My issue is not with the occupancy code or people who had a reserved table, but with allowing people in who did NOT deserve to cut ahead of others who had been waiting in the cold for 45 minutes. My favorite was a guy who said "Hey, my friend just got off a plane from Thailand...can't he come in...he's in the back of the line?" He was allowed in then bragged "That was so easy!" All 5' 1" of me brought this to bouncer's attention to which he replied "Take it up with that guy" pointing to the manager. Problem was, he too was letting in every Tom, Dick, and old cougar with a sob story. I politely asked for my cash back and left with my friends. Semi-redeeming moment: The guy from the band apologizing to me about what had happened. Though it wasn't his responsibility, I really appreciated it. I hope his kindness rubs off. I know it can be a frustrating job, but I'm asking these gentemen to be more fair to the HONEST people spend their money and time at the Saxon Pub. read more

I have a friend with a pregnant wife who is an hour and a half away. They wanted to see Bob Schneider tonight but the only way they could is if she could sit. I called them to ask to reserve a table and they straight up said "we DONT take reservations. you have to know Bob or someone in the band." Then said "well, you could show up at 7 and TRY to find a table that is free." NO tables are ever free for Bob, they are always all reserved. These people are pretentious jerks, or Bob is, one of the two. Their whole reasoning behind it is "It's not us it's Bob." Whoever it is, not offering to save ONE table for someone who lives in another state, flew to Texas, and was was willing to drive an hour and a half to see a singer she liked - is a pure and simple 100% lack of class in my opinion. I hope enough people read this to stay away from this place and cost them at least SOME business. If I could rate zero stars, I would. They don't deserve one. read more

Visited here for the first time two weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Was able to listen to a few people perform live music while drinking a few beers on tap. While there alcohol options are not as vast as you may find in other bars, they make up for it with the laid back friendly feel you get when you come here. read more

I heart Saxon Pub. My cousin is lead in a band who plays here somewhat regularly, and we get to sit in the little VIP section that's separated by a little wooden fence and has nice big, dark wooden furniture for the duration of the show. The cocktail waitresses are sweet here, will check on you a lot, and remember what beer you're drinking so that you don't have to mouth it over the din. the doormen are reasonably polite. read more
