I experienced my first cooking class at the seasoned chef and it was so much fun! After we checked in there were little appetizers that we could eat before the class began. They also had beer, wine and seltzers for sale. Chef Tony was very knowledgeable and friendly! We were split into groups and each group made two dishes and there were easy to follow instructions for each dish. We were also provided a take home packet with all the recipes in it. The menu for the night included six different dishes and they were all so delicious and really embodied the Greek cuisine. I will definitely be doing another cooking class in the future! read more

Plus the staff here cleans up the mess which takes care most of the chore part. My queen and I took our first cooking class here at the Seasoned Chef on a Friday night. The middle eastern cuisine was taught by chef Devin L. Devin was very organized even though it was his first time teaching this course. I highly recommend courses with Devin because he sincerely enjoys teaching and takes time answering each student's question. The course ends with buffet style dinner where students can try all dishes including my favorite the Muhammara. The seasoned chef is lucky to have chefs like Devin. Took the "My Big Fat Greek Party" class last night where we made a wide variety of delicious Greek food that I likely would have never tried to make at home. Chef Tony was awesome and very knowledgeable, and the class as a whole was very friendly and communal. The food was delicious and we were able to take home leftovers! Used for 16 person corporate event. Not great for a group that size. Chef Dan is not geared for a corporate event. Need simpler menu options. Menu required quite a few items that most regular kitchens don't have - didn't list alternative items that could be used. Turn around time on cocktail choices was poor during planning. We paid to have them put together ingredient boxes for all our local participants. We knew we had to get our own alcohol for the cocktail though. However, after we purchased the cocktail alcohol, we received the ingredient list and we needed two more alcohols for cooking. We kept asking and asking for the ingredient list and cocktail options. Wanted to give our out of town participants the previous weekend to shop for ingredients. Made the weirdest comments during the event. The whole team the next day really couldn't believe some of the comments he made. Expected that everyone had a second oven. Hard to get him to slow down. We even cut the dessert from the meal ahead of time. read more

I recently had the pleasure of being gifted the class of Basic Skills Every Cook Should Know which is a 2 day class over the course of 2 weeks. I was a bit nervous attending the class on my own, but I quickly relaxed and got into the class. Chef Dan has done a great job of putting together a crash course for home cooks who are looking to learn technique and the basics of good cooking. All of our dishes tasted wonderful and were fun to learn about and make. I truly learned some great lessons and am eager to continue practicing them. I love that Chef Dan encourages taking pictures and video too (because I know the videos are going to help me remember all the details!) Also, you work in groups together learning as much technique as possible. If you work on cutting skills the 1st week, you'll move to something else the 2nd week. I wasn't sure what to expect when it came to that, but it ended up working out in the end because I definitely learned a lot. Especially when I get scolded for my poor skills and have to take more mental notes! I honestly wish the class could go longer than 2 nights! I liked the class so much, I'm planning to attend additional classes! Oh, and I even bought the cookbook to use at home while I work on practicing. Beyond expectation! We have been to a couple classes at The Seasoned Chef and each time they seem to outdo themselves. Our most recent class was a tacos tostadas and Anejos class where we had a delicious tequila tasting and made tons of different food options. We got to start the class tasting three different tequilas and the chef suggested what parts of the meal the different tequilas would go well with. All of the food was absolutely delicious (as always). I have no idea how they are able to get a bunch of people, who don't cook often (at least I don't) and create such great food. My favorite part of the meal was the delicious churros that my husband and I got to make together. Not only was it really cool to get to cook with him, it's even better when the food is so good you go home wanting to make it again. Thankfully we get to go home with a full recipe packet for all the foods we eat so we can re-create them at home. I can't wait to get back for another class. My husband and I took a cooking class here for our anniversary. We have taken cooking classes in the past at Stir. This experience was a bit different. Let's start with what we liked: the food. It was all delicious and the recipes are reasonable enough to make at home. Now, the rest. First, we saw online that they would be requiring gloves, masks, etc. They did not, which at this point in time with Covid I guess I'm ok with, but their health and safety practices did not even meet pre-Covid standards. Everyone washed their hands at the start and then that was it. Stations were not cleaned, and at one point, the Chef dipped a tasting spoon into one sauce, tried it, and then dipped the same spoon into another sauce right after it was in her mouth. Double dipping as a "professional" chef??!?!? Yuck!! Second, from the start, things seemed super disorganized. In fact, one of the assistants had to run to the store to get more ingredients in the middle of class. They put us into teams to work on different parts of the meal. This was probably the most disappointing piece. At Stir, you get a chance to work on every course of the meal. Our team, which had 6 people compared to the other two teams' 4 people, was given the easiest things to do. Within 30 minutes we were all standing around not knowing what to do while the other teams were in over their heads. We asked if we could do something else and were told to "chill out" and socialize. So we did. A few minutes later, the same assistant that told us to do that came over and said "here, if you aren't doing anything, then help out and chop this". Uhhh ok. That's what we asked for a few minutes ago and were made to feel like we were being pushy! Then we were made to feel like we were lazy when we were told to socialize! Sheesh! Finally, our class started at 6:30 and we were told we would eat no later than 8:45. At 8:45 one team was still prepping food, so the chef created a "competition" between the other two teams as to who could make the best caramel sauce for dessert. She provided a recipe and gave each team a different liquor to add to the sauce. After 15 minutes with the heat on high, the sauces weren't caramelizing. The chef claimed that there must not have been enough sugar put in either one, so she just started scooping sugar into them. Ten minutes later, still nothing. She said she couldn't figure out what was happening, but as one of the people in the group had told her earlier, with their electric induction burners, the water wasn't getting hot enough in the double boiler to heat the mixture to a caramelization level. Then she acted like she was the one who knew that all along, and after these people had wasted thirty minutes of their time, she just said forget it and the sauces would just be served as is. We didn't end up eating until 9:15 and by that time, we were ravenous. The chef, who had given a 15 minute introduction of what we'd be cooking at the start of the class, proceeded to regurgitate the information again, which by the way, was also included in the recipe packets we were given at the start of class. I've seen similar comments in the reviews here over the past 8 years about the late eating time, lack of professionalism and safety, and the inability to make more than one part of the meal. The owner, Dan, says he takes the feedback to heart to make things better, but it doesn't seem like it since nothing has changed. I've taken two classes here and I can't wait to take more! I took their "Basic Skills" and "Knife Skills" classes and both were user-friendly, practical... and we made delicious meals. I also attended one team building event that they hosted for our large corporate group. I loved how we were able to work together, have a lot of fun, meet people across teams, and learn how to communicate effectively in a new subject area. While we don't talk about cooking everyday at work, it definitely included lessons that we've been able to apply regularly. We took the couples Italian Wine Night course at the Seasoned chef and really enjoyed it! They start out by giving you an apron, and having you sign up as a couple for a course to make. For example, we were assigned to making the antipasti course for the group with one other couple. Our chef, Donna, then went through each recipe verbally step by step with the whole class, discussing techniques and the steps involved. We felt that this was counterproductive because the amount of information was overwhelming, when you didn't have a visual or hands on experience to pair it with. (I learn by seeing and doing, and just throwing information out there felt like a major time waste) We thought the structure of the class could've used a bit of work. After the whirlwind explanation, Donna just released all of us to the kitchen to start using the recipes to work on our individual dishes. The chef and one other staff member were walking around to answer questions and provide help as needed, and our chef would periodically stop everyone to demonstrate different techniques or processes as problems or questions arose. However, with us being inexperienced chefs and little direction or organization, it started to feel a bit messy. At times it was chaotic with over a dozen strangers in the same kitchen space reaching over each other, asking to borrow/share equipment and cooking/prep spaces and trying to figure things out as they went. Because of this structure, it was disappointing to only really learn how to make one course that you were assigned to while everyone else worked on their part. We got to learn how to make pasta and roll it out into ravioli, as well as which wines pair well with specific courses. The course was scheduled to end at 9:30, but because the class was less structured we did not start eating until 10:30, which was a little rough! In the end, we learned about a lot of new dishes, a few new techniques, and got to enjoy a very yummy gourmet meal with some new friends. Donna was very nice and offered a lot of insight and tips on the different dishes. One positive to the lack of structure was that the whole process was very collaborative and you felt a special bond with all the other people you worked with! This was probably the best date I've ever been on! My partner and I both love cooking, and love learning. The class involved some basics (such as cutting an onion) and some more advanced and tricky techniques (hollandaise-esque butter sauce), so everyone had at least a little to learn. Chef Dan is a great cook, and he's also a great teacher: personable, attentive, inclusive, and entertaining. His assistants were also brilliant fun. You get the recipes for later use, on top of it all, and that's the homemade maraschino cherry on top of the awesome sundae (so to speak) that was this experience. I had high hopes for the couple's class and was looking forward to it but was cancelled not once but twice! I understand difficulties in navigating this Covid storm we're facing but rather than focusing on profitablity/filling the class Chef Dan should have focused on great customer service and do the class regardless of the few people that signed up. If it means taking a loss in revenue yet making the customers happy then more business will come later by word of mouth but instead he refunded me my money And got a bad review which hurts overall long term profitablity! read more

I have been getting the meals curbside, almost every week, since they started. I have loved each time, but they really knocked it out of the park, this week, though. Absolutely amazing tastes, that I would never have tried otherwise. And I have the cookbook, which is fabulous and educational. The portions were big enough to use for 2-3 meals each, and they looked so enticing even as leftovers or added to a salad. I also got to do an online cooking class with Chef Aarika, and it was so good...she explained everything so clearly, and how to buy the right things, and knife skills. It made me want to try in my own kitchen as soon as I can feel safe to go to Asian markets! Everything was so efficient, and so that helped me figure out how to organize the cooking process. I just got back from a Fish and Seafood Workshop taught by Chef Dan Witherspoon at the Seasoned Chef. This was probably the best $68.00 I have spent in a long time. We learned four techniques for cooking fish and one for seafood and each method had secrets I never knew. The facility is well lit, well stocked, and well operated. The class was divided into 5 teams of three (each of us making different dishes: mine was Oven Roasted Cod with Miso Glaze). As we prepared each dish, the staff would come behind us and pick up the dirty dishes and have them washed and restocked by the next dish (I would pay dearly for someone to do this at my home). Once the class did the prep work for their individual menu, we would go to each "station" to watch a team cook the dish with Chef Dan assisting; it is very hands on. Then we would eat the prepared food, not only learning proper cooking techniques for fish but how to make sauces, browned butter, flambe, rice, and vinaigrette. There were 16 people in my class and a great mix, from a young high school student to an older lady who kept hitting the wine carafe (Yes, the chef asked us to join him in drinking wine with the meals). I highly recommend the Seasoned Chef classes for beginners and seasoned chefs alike. I think anyone could learn something. Next on my agenda, knife skills; I heard that is a great class as well. Tip: There were several couples taking this class; I think taking a class together would be a great date night for any couple. read more

I was fortunate enough to come here as part of a team building event with my work colleagues for a night of "Christmas in Tuscany". This was my first ever cooking class and I thought the set up was done well and the menu was well thought out. The class of 15-20 is split up into groups that work on 1-2 dishes that have been planned for the class. The menu consisted of a vegetable soup with collard greens and Parmesan crostini, a citrus mussel salad, cheesy polenta, homemade linguine with roasted shrimp in a cream sauce, lamb roulade with gremolata, and the menu finished with meringue cookies topped with brandied cherry sauce. The chef goes over the menu for the class and what the steps will be for each dish and how everything will work together. The chef then reviews a few safety tips and a couple helpful chopping techniques. The chef and his cooking assistants walk around the room helping each group start their dishes, helping with supplies and keeping work spaces clean. The groups then go to their designated areas and start on their assigned dishes. At varying intervals during the class the chef brings the entire class to different stations when showcasing a certain step in the cooking process or a cool technique. I really enjoyed listening and watching the group that made homemade pasta and the group that was in charge of cooking the mussels. I had a wonderful time with my group and the entire class, joking around and cooking new dishes. I could see this as a wonderful date night or group outing. It was a well paced class and at the end everyone was able to try all the dishes and enjoy some wine while discussing the ease of cooking each dish and how easy it would be to replicate everything at home. My mom visits CO often and I could see a cooking class here being right up our alley. I would come back in a heart beat for another class and try my skills at something new. I've been meaning to sign up for a cooking class forever, so I made it one of my New Year's resolutions. I signed up for the chocolate truffle class because I wanted to learn to do something that I wouldn't easily be able to figure out on my own. Cupcakes, yes. Homemade truffles, no. Our instructor, Catherine Cavoto, was hilarious and provided great easy-to-follow instructions. I learned to temper and seed chocolate and caramelize sugar, something I hadn't been able to master in the past. It's definitely a hands-on class, which is important to me b/c I learn by doing. They split you up into smaller groups, so everybody gets their hands dirty so to speak. Seasoned Chef offers a wide variety of classes whether it be ethnic food, basic cooking skills, desserts, gluten-free, couples cooking, etc. Prices hover around about $60 for a class, which is actually really reasonable when it comes to cooking classes. I mean ultimately the class taught me to make my own chocolate treats (and I got to take home a bunch of samples), so how could it really deserve less than five stars? read more

I'm a little hesitant to write a review on a cooking class since this was the first I have ever been to, but oh geez, what the heck...I'm just gonna go with my gut. I had an amazing experience at Seasoned Chef. I showed up, annoyed that I didn't get to sleep in on a Saturday, and had no idea what to expect. Within 15 minutes of the class starting, Chef Dan Witherspoon had me laughing at his jokes and engaged in the lesson. Witherspoon entertained the class with his sassy and no b.s. attitude. I was very glad when he [lightly] reprimanded a girl for taking an unnecessarily long break- we couldn't start without her, and I wanted to get my money's worth! Figuring that I'm no stranger to the kitchen, I thought that I would simply be brushing up at my skills at the "Cutting Edge" workshop. Instead I discovered I have been holding my knife the wrong way, the knife sharpener is really an edge straightener, and tons of other useful tools that I can use every day. I highly would recommend Seasoned Chef for anyone who is looking to brush up their skills and learn something new while having a great time. How have I not written a review yet??? I've been taking about 3 classes a year here for 3-4 years. I'd love to take more, but I work at night. I've loved all the instructors I've met and remade many recipes to rave reviews. I haven't tasted anything in a class that I haven't liked. I never liked brussel sprouts, and now, I blame Dan for making me like them. I also credit Catherine with my upcoming wedding. Who knew learning that chocolate has six different crystal formations would catch someone's attention? While you'll learn practical skills (like how to chop an onion efficiently and safely) and basic techniques, you'll really be learning how to translate these abilities into amazing creations of your own. Be prepared 90 degree temperatures and a cold meal. Went with a group. The chef knew there were vegetarians and vegans in the group. Despite that, he had everyone put chicken broth in what would have otherwise been vegetarian dishes - didn't even have veggie broth??. Substituting jicama for taro was gross and made no sense, making that dish inedible too. After hours and literally drenched with sweat, I was able to eat pita chips and a veggie side. Only gripes I have with the place was signing up and paying for a class with 15 attendees and i showed up to a class with 29!! then i only got 4 tamales to take home after paying $65... expensive tamales! It's also not a super sexy kitchen. If you're a basic cook and just want to learn, this is the place for you. If you're into upping your game in the kitchen and impressing your guests, using state of the art kitchen stuff this might not be the place for you. Just fantastic! We just did our first class this past weekend with Chef Dan and wow did we learn a lot. Never realized how many things we did wrong in the kitchen. Chef Dan had us laughing minutes into the class and he has a great way of sharing his knowledge. We purchased the 2 day Cooking for Beginners class since this was our first cooking class. I highly recommend this class for anyone who is not a seasoned cook or can just do the basics. Chef Dan focused on technique which I did not realize was so important. Everything from how to use a knife in the kitchen properly to how to make food not stick in your pan without using Pam. They split our class of 17 in to teams of 3 or 4 and we each made a portion of the meal. I will say, everything we made tasted great and was a joy to make, The facilities were well lit and stocked, clean and professional. After reading the other reviews, I think that (perhaps) I owe it to The Seasoned Chef to try another class... maybe my experience was simply reflective of a "bad day." Although I am a confident cook in the kitchen, and have taken a variety of cooking classes at other venues, I was shocked at the disorder and general mayhem during my class. What I found most exasperating, however, was the fact that they didn't even have the ingredients on hand to prepare two of the five featured dishes! Pros and cons here. Staff is super nice, Chef Andrew was a competent instructor. Whipped up some excellent paella dishes and, overall, the experience was organized and pleasant. Now for the downsides... first, this cooking school is on the ground floor of an office building. Zero ambiance, feels like this space could have been a dentist's office or a travel agency in a previous incarnation. The dining spaces are basically circular tables with highly uncomfortable wooden chairs. No linens, no candlelight, no music. Also, most of us ended up recycling the same plates and silverware through course after course because they didn't have plates for every course. Hmmm. There is but one large kitchen space, with a single double oven that works double-time to accommodate food for 20 or more people. The oven door is opening and closing constantly... the end result is that some dishes come out undercooked. There is but one large cooktop... and it's electric, not gas. Probably the case because this space used to be an office space, but not many world class cooking schools work off of electric ranges. All in all, the experience is okay, but not great. There are a few places around town (Stir, for one) that offer some real ambiance, plus better quality kitchen spaces, plus music, plus a private dining area.
