My Favorite place in the world. Classic theater feels. Lots of history and character. Love that.

Support your local theatre! This place is certainly a flash to the past. Everything seems like it's straight out of the 60s. The lobby, the restrooms, the concessions area, and the main auditorium are all very art deco and retro. We purchased our tickets online and received a confirmation email with a QR code. All we had to do was scan the QR code at one of the kiosks in the lobby and they were printed out for us. We were in auditorium three that day which is a smaller room compared to the very glitzy main auditorium. My only complaint that the screen seemed to have some sort of damage or malfunction because there were purple spots all on the left side. You can only really see it when the movie got darker in color which was often since we were seeing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice that day. It was very annoying. The movie was terrible, obviously not The Senator's fault though. I'd definitely come back but hope they figure out the picture issues in auditorium three. read more

The Senator Theatre is such a cool place. A local theatre that is a complete blast to the past. From the concessions to the design of the theatres, this place feels like it is from another time. The Senator features four screening areas. I have been in two of the four including the main screening room. Both featured comfortable seating, were easy to manuever in and out of and had great views of the screen with excellent sound. Tickets are relatively cheap, compared to some theatres I've visited. I'm talking eight dollars per ticket. I have not visited at peak times so I cannot vouch whether tickets are always that reasonably priced or not. Concessions are pricey but not more so than other theatres I have experienced. Why only four stars? Namely two reasons, popcorn and air conditioning. The popcorn during my visits has not been super hot and fresh. It is more lukewarm, like it has been sitting a while. This is a bit of a downer. With the air conditioner, we visited recently on a Monday night and the main theatre was a bit humid. Not super cool and chill like a lot of theatres I've visited in the past (including many experiences in Florida). Granted this was during the national emergency hot weather phase so it could've been the heat was unbearable outside and too much for any air conditioner to keep up with. When it comes to seeing movies, this place will continue to be my go to as the history, affordability and localness of it outweigh any minor quibbles I have. read more

I've been going to the Senator since I was a boy. Love it. They always have a variety of movies to watch.

Avoid theater #4 unless you like poor video, poor audio and a heating system that is louder than the movie. Just plain awful. Theater #1 looks grand and what you'd expect given The Senator's reputation. But Theater #4 is tiny room (former storage room?) and complete waste of time and money. Very disappointing. read more

Been going to Senator for over 50 years. Went to matinee today to see Unknown. Movie gets 5 stars but theatre gets 3 stars. We were in one of the side theatres and it was in bad shape. Seat backs were torn and it was so dark it was borderline dangerous moving around theatre to get to seat. Little leg room even though seat was comfortable. Bathroom was extremely clean and tidy. Still a gem but needs some love. read more

The Senator opened in 1939, and it's still open as a movie theater today - which is amazing! The theater has been restored, but its historic charm was preserved. The theaters are definitely not as luxe as we've come to expect in recent years (not a lot of seat elevation here, no recliner seats), but it makes up for that in historic charm. It has a snack bar and a bar bar (where you can get cocktails, beer, and wine for later in the day movies - and alcoholic milkshakes if the milkshake machine is working), and it shows a good variety of movies (from the new movies - I just saw Oppenheimer and Barbie here - to once a week revival of older movies/classics). It's a great - and special - theater; definitely check it out! read more

The Senator Theater is a blast from the past, a lovely place that harkens to days long gone. I find the seats there pretty comfortable despite them being old and not having the bells and whistles of stadium seats or seats that recline. Concessions are good and I like I can self-serve butter onto my own popcorn. Good place to catch a movie on that side of town. read more

Terrific historical theater in a great location in Baltimore! Restored but with all the old features preserved. Right across from Belvedere Square...cool modern food court of a place. Was part of a private party for Spider-Man:NWH. We had the lounge upstairs, and it was a lot of fun. The lounge areas have glass and their own speakers so you don't have to worry about being loud or for the sound not reaching you well. There are 5-6 seats in each of three rows. This was a perfect way to watch a movie with a small group if some of the people aren't ready to be exposed to the entire public (especially now that the theater requires vaccination!). Senator staff are always friendly. Sitting in a classic theater is pretty cool. The art deco style is fun. read more

This is such a fun, cool theater that transports you back in time. The architecture and decor is absolutely beautiful. Bonus points for serving a variety of adult drinks. This was my first pandemic movie night and it was great, I felt very safe and the theater has so many seats, so sitting close to anyone else wasn't an issue. read more

Walking into the Senator brought back such fond memories of my childhood, when my family lived close by and this is where we went to the movies. I am so glad that they were able to renovate and keep open this lovely theater. It is a Baltimore icon. Today, we came to see the new "Downton Abbey" movie. It is the saga of the Crawley family and their servants who worked for them in the early 20th Century, and was an adaption of the TV show that aired on PBS for several years. We went to a matinee and it was not crowded. We had great seats in the center of the theater. I am short; thus, I really like to have no one in front of me so that I can see the screen completely. The movie was just delightful. We only wished it had gone on longer. The scenery, script, costumes, actors and actresses really took us back to the series. It was just nice to see how everyone's lives upstairs and downstairs have turned out. My husband thought it was a little light on content, but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. read more

I hadn't been to this place in years. This was the only place showing Creed III last night that was not crowded. When I stopped at the theater around 7pm. I purchased tickets for the 945 pm showing. The person at the office box was very friendly however, he was unsure where the legal parking was for the movie. The movie itself does not have a designated lot. I was able to pick out our seats. We went to grab a bite to eat at a different location while waiting for the movie to start. When we arrived back at the theater because they were not crowded I was able to grab a parking spot at a meter directly across the street from the theater. Because of timing the meter did not have to be paid. We entered the movie and were greeted by a pleasant greeter. I headed to the bathroom before the start of the movie..it was very clean. When we entered the theater itself we were the only two in the movie. Before the start of the movie another couple also entered. The theater was clean and comfortable. read more

Beautiful art deco theatre! Born in 1939 this historical place is a gem! There is the main auditorium with a 40 foot silver screen and 3 additional smaller screening rooms. There is a bar inside, the usual popcorn and snacks, and 2 pour yourself butter stations for your popcorn. read more

This is a hidden gem. If you're like us and Towson Cinemark is sold out of your flick on a Saturday afternoon, just make the 9 minute drive to Senator Theatre. We saw Top Gun Maverick at the Senator and they had PLENTY of seats for the showings. Parking is free in the lot across the street. Great movie and some great Art Deco style within this theatre. Really great and fun time! read more

It is good to still see the senator thriving! As one of the oldest theaters in Baltimore the Senator is truly a staple! There are so many things I enjoy about the senator , one of them being joe friendly the staff is! The theater is always showing the top movies which really helps them stay current and competitive amongst other theaters. The theater offers a more intimate viewing experience which I really appreciate! Theater one which I have never been in looks so stunning and makes you feel like you have been taken back in time. To my understanding that theater can be booked for corporate events etc. In regards to food it's great to see the theater partnered Clark burger next door to get a bite to eat or bring it with you! Belvedere Square is also across the street if you want some other food options and to stop by grand cru for a beverage. The theater does offer drinks, popcorn and snacks which aren't badly priced. My only comment is that I wish they would update the theater slightly. Still keeping the traditional elements but make the entry more up to date, some theater chairs more modern and remove the carpet in the women's lounge area. The ticket prices are very standard and many times you can't purchase online which is fine and I think also kelps keep cost low! Overall I will continue to support this local theater as I really enjoy the experience more than the larger ones read more

I'd heard a lot about the Senator from my husband and MIL. Husband is from Baltimore, and on previous visits we weren't able to try the Senator. We attended the annual Christmas viewing of It's a Wonderful Life. Admission was free but donations to the food bank were encouraged. Doors opened at 9, and we got there around 9:30 with a bag of canned food. It was neat to see the lobby filled with other bags of donations! The theatre was packed but we were able to find seats near the front off to the side. Despite the fact that we were close to the front (I'd say 3rd row or so), it was pretty comfortable. The screen was set on a stage and further back than most other theaters, so that helped. We thoroughly enjoyed the movie and it was fun to cheer, sigh and experience the movie with everyone else. Highly recommend the Senator for any movie experience, and can't wait to come back to watch a movie! read more

As many others have mentioned, this is a beautiful old theatre. If I had been alone, I would have arrived early or stayed late, to wander around and photograph all the lovely décor. But, since I brought my grandkids to see Jurassic Park, and we were running late, AND they got too scared about an hour in... well... *SIGH* Although someone said you can't purchase tickets online, yes you can. The link takes you to a third-party site and it's pretty easy. Be aware, though, they charge a $1 per ticket "convenience fee". As for the theatre itself, aside from being enjoyable esthetically, the seats are very comfortable. There is a bar as well as snack bar, and it appears they have cocktail specials. I love that they do "revivals" like the 1993 Jurassic Park showing. Prices are quite reasonable - other than that convenience fee - with all matinees being $7 pp. Parking: the lot across the street is actually posted as being only for Marketplace customers. I don't know whether it is ever monitored; it's kind of a back door, small lot. However, I was mildly concerned about coming out to find my car had been towed! Other than the 45 minute drive from home, it was a pleasant experience and I might return someday. Sans grandkids, lol. read more

What a lovely place! I came to the theater for stoops on a Thursday night - I cannot comment on seeing actual movies. The theater had comfortable seating and was overall very welcoming. The historic look makes it extra special. They even have seating in the back with tables to eat at. There is some damage to the ceiling, which unfortunately comes with age, I would assume. For parking, I was able to find parking along York Road, but I love that their website points out nearby lots to park in so you don't have to fight for street parking. As a native Baltimorean, there will never be another theater quite like the Senator. If you go in expecting the plush experience of more contemporary movie theaters you will be disappointed. However, if you're looking for a striking, well-preserved Art Deco theater steeped in Baltimore history, with its own walk of fame and a good mix of new releases, arthouse flicks, and revivals, you're in the right place. The lobby with its murals, brass ornamentation and colorful pendant chandelier, the elegant lounge spaces, and the impressive main theater all exude vintage Baltimore charm. It is fitting that this theater has hosted so many star-studded premieres over the course of its 80 years of operation, including almost all of John Waters' premieres. The Senator is always a fantastic place for a slightly glamorous, yet also totally unpretentious theater experience. The place oozes old Baltimore and is also unique in the sense that it allows outside food (at least from Clark Burger next door). As someone who grew up going here and saw the theater through a very tumultuous few years, I am thrilled to see the Senator become a destination again, newly expanded and thriving. read more

Two of us came here last evening to see the Rocket Man, a rather meh biopic of Elton John. While the movie itself was disappointing, the Senator Theater was as amazing as ever. Actually, it's gotten even better with age, just like me. ;-) If you have not visited this glorious Art Deco movie theater, you have got to go! Tickets for adults are $12. The main theater is a large, old-fashioned theater equipped with comfy chairs and a magnificent gold curtain that opens when the trailers start. The interior architectural details are beautiful and worth a longer long. The lobby features murals, lighting, and beautiful floor. Stepping into the Senator is an enjoyable time travel experience. Out front are the embossed sidewalk squares that pay homage to all of the films that have premiered here-- John Waters features prominently, of course. There is also a Clark Burger next door and you are allowed to bring in food-- that is cool! I found parking literally out front on York Road but there is also a parking lot across the street (& slightly south) where you may also park. Thanks, Senator! I'll be back again for sure. read more

Tonight was super awesome. They ran Purple Rain on the main screen it turned out to be one big sing along night. Before the show they had a live performer covering some of Princes greatest tunes. I really enjoyed my first experience here. Only one complaint, they need curtains on the windows to the main screen. There should be no reason why the light shines through from the hall. read more

One of the most charming places to see a film, especially if you get the main theatre (#1 behind concessions) which is absolutely beautiful and you'll definitely want to get a photo in there before your movie starts. Everything in the theatre has that old school touch and there are even waiting rooms with sofas if you just want to hang out before your show starts. The staff is genuinely very friendly and will make sure you know exactly where you are going and when your showing starts. Just don't be alarmed if it seems empty when you walk in, some employees have multiple roles since there usually aren't as many films playing here at once as you'd find in a normal chain movie theater. I've seen a bunch here and will continue to keep going whenever I get the chance, not many places left where you feel like you're walking into a time capsule. read more

This theater is a local Baltimore treasure! I have seen a countless amount of screenings and every one of them has made a lasting impression on me. Regardless of my opinion of the individual movie, this theater transports you to a golden age of cinema that is not to be missed! I know the survival of this beautiful place has been put into question but for all our sakes, I hope we never see a day where we lose this place. My favorite Baltimore movie house. Ever. But, I saw the classic Talking Heads concert film "Stop Making Sense" tonight on the BIG screen and was disappointed. Not with the movie but with the sound. This was either a bad cut of the film or the house sound system was malfunctioning. All we mainly heard was Tina's bass, Chris's drums and Byrne's vox and guitar. Disappointing because The band had so much energy but we could hardly hear Bernie, Alex, Edna, Lynn, Steve and Jerry in the mix. Oh well. read more

It kills me every time I see an historic icon like the Senator theater that closes down for some major franchise like CVS, etc.. I was devastated when the Biograph in Georgetown closed, The Cinema Drafthouse in Bethesda and the one that hit me the most was the Key Theater. And there were many more. Thank God the Senator is still in business! I salute the owner in keeping this awesome retro vibe intact. From the outside cosmetics, the front ticket booth, theater seating and the whole nine yards of it makes one feel all tingly inside..lol esp for those film buffs. And there is upgraded technology of course with the sound and quality of the equipment used for the films I'm sure. It's super clean, comfy and magical. I'm going again. Today's movie theaters are nice but it will never capture the same feel like "the Senator" theater. read more

If you want to see a Movie, no scratch that. If you want to experience a Movie THE way it is supposed to be experienced, then you need to see it at The Senator Theatre. Hands down, heck even feet down there is NO PLACE better to see a movie. I have been to the Senator Theatre numerous times and every single time I have been elated with the experience. The picture quality is perfect. They have a huge screen. The sound quality is excellent and can not get any better. The audiences are wonderfully respectful of the screenings. The staff might just be one of the most amazing theatre staffs in the world. Finally the owner Tom Kiefaber is a great lover of Cinema and Historic Theatres. Plus, they have a huge food selection that is very reasonable priced. I just love this place. I can't get enough of it. I now live in Boston and even if I am down in Maryland for 2 days I make it a point to see at least one movie at the Senator Theatre. read more

Really wish the establishment would not keep everyone packed like sardines in the Non air conditioned lobby up until 5-10 minutes before showtime. No seating, or activities, or concessions at all in the hot lobby. Patrons really should be able to get to concession stand order and sit at the 15-20 minute mark in the hot summer at least. read more

Ok, so this place is really unique... we are not from Baltimore so we have never been here before and had no idea this Movie "Theater" is actually a real theater like as in Broadway (Not that fabulous though). It is not in the best neighborhood but it is a cool experience none the less. It is also very inexpensive. They also had a bar (something you don't see in NJ).
