We had the family to-go pack and it was great. I really enjoyed the potato salad. It does have onions which I know some don't prefer. The pulled pork was great as well as the sauce. The restaurant is made out of railroad ties so that was neat! Would eat head again. The lady on the phone was nice when she took our order and it was ready when they said it would be. read more

For locals it's known as the Shack created by the Hann Family. Has been going for a long time. The folks are just the best around. They get the order bring it out and hold on to your hats. The food quality has always been enjoyable. Seating is limited and is crowded at times. The atmosphere is dark and dismal. The creosote treatment to the exposed wood has a lot of "off gases" that are obnoxious after a while. The owner and staff are generally very welcoming and accommodating. read more

Had the BBQ meat (chopped pork), five pork ribs, side of delicious sweet baked beans, coleslaw, dinner roll, two drinks and a piece of pecan pie all for under $25. My husband brought food home today and OMG! What happened to the Shack we used to love? I didn't get a chance to taste the slaw because my husband spit his first bite out and said it was ruined! He will eat anything. The BBQ sandwich meat was not good. The sauce tasted like it had been cut with ketchup. Very tomato taste. He had ribs and they were good. Fries were good. They always had great sweet tea. Now that was even off. I just don't know what to think. Did they sell? New owners? I do not recommend! read more

As I was out running an errand to Pell City, I found this intriguing BBQ place known as The Shack. If you see the pics, it is described very accurately. Now the place might look kind of like a joke, but there is pretty good BBQ inside. My sweet tea was homemade and freshly brewed. I went with the rib and meat plate...no brisket here just pork...with beans and potato salad. One word I would not use to describe the ribs is tender. They took some work to gnaw on but wasn't bad. The pork was better. The ribs and pork were smoky and chewy. Didn't seem like there was any unique seasoning to them. The BBQ sauces went really well with the meat. You had mild, sweet, and hot...all ketchup - base and all were very similar to Sonny's BBQ sauces. Beans had meat mixed in and that always adds a little something extra to them. Potato salad was homemade, nice blend of mustard and miracle whip, and no overpowering taste of relish or celery. I got peanut butter pie to go but I need milk to eat it. I was pleased with the Shack...the only complaint I have is that the BBQ be a little more easy on the jaw. read more

First of all you do not go the shack and order a hamburger!! YOU GO THERE FOR THE PORK. OMG THE BEST RIBS AND OUTSIDE SLICED I HAVE EVER HAD AND I AM FULL BLOWN PIG EATER!!!! Impressive. Found this place by chance for our part of 8. Between us we had everything. The favorites were the pulled pork and potato salad and the sweet BBQ sauce. Prices are amazing! We grabbed some take-out from The Shack since it's only a couple of minutes from the condo we stayed at. It was also a recommendation from a local. Great little find! The BBQ is the real deal. Nice ring, with good flavor but not overly smoky or dried out. Sauce was sweet and mild so it was a hit with our group. We had several people to feed so we got a whole shoulder, which they sliced for us (made it a whole lot easier to eat on a sandwich). Potato salad was great had a hint of mustard but not overpowering and it still had good chunks of potato. Baked beans had small pieces of meat in them and were delicious too. Very reasonably priced too! The same quantity of food in the North would have easily been double the cost!!! Will be one of our "must have's" on our next trip to the area. read more

The ribs are awesome, the sauce is REALLY GOOD. I'm not fond of the potato salad, but the onion rings? YUM! Try the BBQ Salad, it will hit the spot! While you're waiting on your order (not very long at all) look around at the old stuff on the wall. It's old timey. The customer service is okay, they're not rude, just too busy to put on a fake smile and chat. I think they cook other food too, but I've just not tried it! read more

Middle of nowhere dive! Unfortunately, the atmosphere/ ambiance is better than the food! The shack is a decomissioned rail car attached to a structure built out of rail road ties. Aesthetically I love places like this.... but it seems the next generation is now running the show and they aren't as into running a restaurant that serves quality food as the original patriarchs were... Frozen fries/ onion rings, bland basic beans and potato salad.. The flavor of the pork was good...... Seems as though for me it could have been cooked longer/ or they're quite possibly using a cheaper cut for their pork plate than I'm used to. read more
