Extravagant candy stores. 4. Bizarre flea markets/yard sales. 5. Stores that specialize in prison inmate made products. I do not get to satisfy #5 very often, but I did at Woods to Goods. Not only is this stuff prison made, it's beautiful. Exquisite cutting boards (which I find so ironic), and wooden bowls that belong in West Elm, and that's just a taste! They also carry Prison Blues, jeans made by inmates in Oregon. The guys that were working there were very knowledgeable and friendly and allowed me plenty of time to browse. I bought a birdhouse that looks like the old Maine State Prison ($15) and a few wooden switch-plate covers ($4). Oh, and a macrame bracelet (made by guards - the inmates taught them how). Definitely drive out of your way to visit! When I am in Maine, I will be back!

It is set up so you want to walk around and try things out. Much of the furniture brings you back to the 50's. Some pieces are works of art! But many were beautiful but affordable. And made in this country! And it is locally owned! Which is what I wanted. Michael the owner is friendly and informed. And no pressure. He spent a lot of time with us trying to choose pieces for our limited space. We have swatches at home now to make decisions and look forward to returning to work with him.
