The Grand Stay is a smallish midwestern chain and there happened to be on in town so I grabbed a room for a few nights Small but nice lobby greets you as you walk in and the attentive fellow behind the desk got me squared away with a room in short order. I was up on the third floor so hopped the elevators and headed up. Elevator arrived and operated in the normal amount of time - so all good. Room was nicely appointed and clean. Bathroom was good sized, well lit and functional. Hot water was hot. There is a large indoor pool available, but I did not have the time to do anything there. They offer a free breakfast in the morning but to be honest, it was very basic. Coffee was decent however. The building is situated on the edge of a strip mall and there is an Italian sports bar there if you feel the need to grab something to eat and watch the game. Parking lot was a bit small and cramped, but got the job done. Overall a solid 3-star hotel and I would stay here again if in the area.

The rooms are quite outdated and could do with some renovating or refreshing. Thankfully though, they have a microwave and fridge. The gym is barely existent, just three machines, a bosu ball and a yoga mat which barely has room to lay out because the room is so small. It was pretty disappointing especially for someone actually uses hotel gyms. The breakfast is quite typical, from fresh fruit, to cinnamon scrolls, biscuits, eggs, sausage, bacon, bagels, yoghurt, oatmeal and granola. The staff seem a bit dazed and confused whenever I would ask any questions and weren't the most assertive. This place wouldn't be my first preference if it was my money and wallet I was spending to accommodate here. In general, the Holiday Inn chain is quite on the cheap side compared to other chains I've stayed at.

I was a bit put off by a large group of very loud men watching the football playoffs in the lobby. Good game, I'm sure, but they were very loud and shouting expletives. My room was nice, but I was surprised to see how wrinkled all of the bedding was. There was also debris on the floor. The bathroom was fully stocked and had cutely folded towels. My window faced the freeway, which was moderately noisy, but the high quality draperies helped block some of that out. The shower was clean and had great water pressure. The bed was surprisingly uncomfortable and the pillows were all different sizes and not comfortable whatsoever. The room had a Keurig, refrigerator, microwave, and a nice selection of coffee and tea. It was quiet during my stay, with the exception of checking in. I did not utilize any of the amenities. I'd stay here again but would probably ask for additional/different pillows next time.

Champagne upon arrival, champagne in our room very attentive staff etc. they do however have complimentary bike rentals which was a very fun surprise, we took a little stroll around, it's great being near so many restaurants walking distance. There was also a shuttle driver so that was a great addition. Our room service however took over 50 minutes to arrive.. we didn't get waters which I feel is a typical thing to provide with room service and my coffee arrived cold. we wanted late check out , they offered an additional hour and if we wanted any longer than that it would be an additional $75. No thank you. I too feel very out of place here in wayzata, so I don't know if it's a town I'd keep on my radar for future stays.

Today, I think a lot of the clientele represent truck driver's overnights on a rig switch. The sign at the door asks patrons to remove their muddy work boots upon entry. Perhaps the hotel is geared to those short stays with minimal gear. The management has changed and the new manager didn't seem to really care much about my experience. I had been away from my room for 12 hours, when i returned my door had not been pulled tight--housekeeping must have neglected to close it. So my hotel room door was open for 12 hours. when I told the story to the manager, he seemed completely unconcerned--saying he was sure everything was fine that they didn't have theft problems there. I was surprised that he didn't even alarmed or apologetic for the situation. So would I return? No. Here is a summary. The good: The location, if you need to be in Orono, Wayzata or the western minnetonka area. Adjacent co-op--they have great healthy food choices Very close to the Luce Line Trail Direct access to downtown with only two traffic lights to downtown Rooms are spacious, plenty of square footage The bad: Lobby smells of smoke Breakfast foods are of very poor quality (get your food at the Harvest Moon Co-op instead) Entire building reeks of smoke, my non-smoking room did not smell, thank goodness! The customer service (and breakfast) are absolutely terrible!! Here's my experience: I reserved my room directly with the hotel on Thursday, 4/19. I had it confirmed to have the Premier Suite (King bed with fireplace and Jacuzzi) - our one night getaway from the kiddos and work/life. Recieved an email confirmation right away. When I arrive at the hotel on 4/21, I check in (They Ok'ed a late check out around 12/12:30 the next day) and they 1) give me the wrong room - a 2 queen bed standard - no jacuzzi, no fireplace. So I proceed to go back to the front desk, all luggage in hand. Tell him my room is wrong. He then proceeds to help another guest first. Then when he talks to me he said that "it was the room I chose" - I then pull up the confirmation with it clearly stating what room and he looks confused and asks "well, I'm not sure what to do, those rooms are already taken." - I had to fight him on this, back and forth, back and forth. After clicking around on his computer, he said ok, I was able to get you a jacuzzi suite. I ask, "how come all of a sudden you can easily give us one?" he said "well there are others coming that reserved that room, so I had to switch it to your name" - I asked what he's gonna do with the other people that are gonna get screwed to - he said he wasn't sure. So from there, we go to the room, and it's STILL not the right room. Jacuzzi (glorified bath tub) suite with NO fireplace. So my boyfriend goes to talk to the guy yet again. The guy tells him they don't even have rooms with fireplaces. So I have to go down after pulling up pictures of their rooms with fireplaces and he said okay, yeah we do have them - but they're already checked out. I proceed to tell him that this experience so far has been terrible and I deserve a discount or comp or something to make it right. I ask for his manager. He states he's not in. When will he be in? He said in the morning, I will leave a note that you need to talk to him. I then call Wyndham corporate who handles those hotels, explained what happened and they said there was nothing they could do either. At this point, I try to make the best of it. The indoor pool/whirlpool was nice. Their breakfast was terrible, coffee was cold. The apple juice was just straight water. The eggs were old, cold, and crusty. There were no sausage patties initially. We tell the front desk guy - he takes at least 10 mins and brings ice cold patties and puts them out. Never replaced the nasty eggs. Never fixed the apple juice. Upon this front desk person getting called to come out by the cleaning lady, we notice that he came out of a room in his pajamas. The maintenance guy for trash, etc also did the same thing. Rolled out of bed in one of the rooms, replaced the trash, and then let his 3 dogs out. I guess they have them stay in the hotel? Just odd. At breakfast, we asked to speak to the manager - was told not here yet. Then around 11 we ask again - that same front desk person says he called in sick, so he wasn't there. How convenient... While I was finishing packing up and getting ready, it was a little after noon - my boyfriend went the pop machine to get a couple drinks for the road - he got one and then the door popped open. The front desk guy (who I now think was the manager) asked how he popped it open - assuming my boyfriend did that. He then says Check out was at 11, why are you still here? I find this out and as I leave this fiasco of a hotel, the front desk guy isn't there. We told him upon check in it'd be a late checkout and he said no problem. Just a very bad experience and I want everyone to know this, if you decide to go outside the cities and think this place is super nice! It's the opposite!! BEWARE!!

Very clean up to date comfortable hotel…read more Very clean but oddly laid out There's no drawers for clothes, just small desk drawers and a closet to hang stuff There are no towel holders near the shower, just a hook that is not really in reach Very nice blackout curtain, you can almost get total blackout except light bleed from top and bottom of curtain which is not much, and light from TV (red) and light that randomly flashes from fire alarm, and alarm clock if you don't face it down there is a constant fan (2) that blow, it does dry things fast if you wash something, like 2 hours passive, but it does hum the entire time there is a hair dryer but it's short so you can't really hold on to clothes to dry it with it cuz of how outlets are laid out i wish there was a seat in entranceway, it's kinda wasted space the doors are loud, you will feel them shake if it's the ones near you, they kinda slam for the most part it was very quiet in the hotel, you will hear ppl if they are loud in the hallways but i barely heard anyone the entire time staff are very friendly soap and shampoo etc are citrus, it smelled nice i like that you can get a foam pillow if you want through the app or just asking bed was nice and comfy, slept well over all i had them empty the mini fridge since those cost money they give you free water, you can get more free in the fitness center and you can get ear buds there for free

We got to experience the huge swing in weather during our stay, using this hotel as a base to take public transport, rideshare, and private pickup/dropoff. The hotel ended up being a good choice. The Elliot is one of the more affordable choices currently in the Edit Collection of Hotels (only three in the Minneapolis area), curated by Chase Travel. We booked (and prepaid) our stay via the Chase Portal, instead of our typical MO of using the Marriott site directly. Positives (of doing it this way) were that we got a $100 stay credit, vouchers for full-service breakfast for two at the property restaurant (Tavola), late checkout, room upgrade, and loyalty credit. Negatives were that the rate is a bit higher than if directly booked (though the bi-annual $250 credit from the credit card more than made up for it), my loyalty status would have given me free breakfast, room upgrade, and late checkout anyway, and since loyalty points are based on how much you spend directly with the hotel, didn't get that many points for our stay (though you do get nights-stayed credit, in case that is important). The hotel opened in 2018 in its current association as a Marriott Autograph Collection member. Our room was ready for us for a 2 pm check-in, on the 4th floor (was told it was an 'upgrade') of an eight floor, 168 room hotel. The room was about 300 square feet in size and tastefully decorated, and had a couch (though not pull-out). The bed was very soft, towels were thick, and one bath robe was provided without asking. It had a modern, very large shower stall with barely-adequate shower pressure, large sink area, and a modern toilet that didn't always recharge after every flush without some manual jiggling. Sachajuan were the soap/shampoo brand used. A small fridge contained a mini-bar, but no microwave or place to sit down and eat. Two bottles of water were provided in the room at check-in. There was a modern flat screen tv with plenty of basic cable channels, and Google Chrome cast enabled, allowing mirroring from one's phone. Temperature controls worked well. Other property observations: - the hotel does seem well integrated with the Marriott ecosystem. I got timely texts, ability to see a lot of info on my Marriott app, - room service is provided via the downstairs restaurant. Morning coffee is available at the lobby. - the dedicated fitness center on the 3rd floor is large, with modern equipment. It is fully stocked, with clean towels (some stored in a small mini-fridge), disinfecting wipes, and bottled water. - there is a small shop, where the resort credit can be used. It carried unusual items (not typical hotel sundry items like soda or chips), and we ended up buying some sea salt flakes ($16) and some genuine swedish fish candy ($10) to completely use the resort credits. There were some problems getting the charges properly handled, but Feranda at the front desk patiently helped me resolve it during checkout. - one can decline housekeeping day by day, getting 1,000 points instead. We took advantage two times. - Normal checkout is 11am, extendable to 4 pm if qualifying. - During happy hour times (3 - 5), samples of two different draft (one beer, one root beer) are offered. - parking is via valet, $54 overnight. There is no mandatory resort fee. The hotel is located about 4 city blocks from the nearest light rail station, so getting to the airport is doable via train. And there is a nice curb manned by the valet where dropoffs/pickups can be safely done.

I did figure out there is a main switch by the door that turns most stuff on, but it's also a 3 way switch to the individual fixtures. So I spent 3 days trying to figure out the right up-down combo. 2 lights I never did figure out. Also worth noting is that it is very close to the medical center, so there were sirens every few minutes. I got used to it but very loud at first.
