I received a conditioning treatment for my hair that has been bleached more times than I can count. She was was informative on how to maintain great silky hair and keep my color in tact as well. Kiley, who was rather new to the salon at the time, did a nice job on my hair and even spent some extra time with me trying to answer my questions about some different ways to style it with some hair clips I had brought along. I did not feel rushed and, in fact, wanted to linger to take it all in - so unusual was the experience compared to the chains or glitzy salons out there. The friend suggested this location in particular, as she thought the high number of queer and gender-nonconforming staff would help my gender-expansive kid feel safe and comfortable. She was absolutely right! The space itself is relaxing and elegant, with some perfect quirky touches. Kiddo decided on a massage, their first ever, and Morgan did an amazing job connecting with and treating them as the customer while still checking in with me. Two thirds of the way through, Kiddo told Morgan, "I wish you could keep massaging my back forever!" Success! She will set your curls free! As a salon, Aura is completely gorgeous. I love its shabby chic vibe with fun bursts of color from some amazing vintage furnishings. It feels like no other salon I've been in, and I mean that as a compliment. Aura is in an old storefront from the early 1900s (or so) with magnificent windows that let in natural light and tall ceilings. It feels elegant and cozy at the same time -- there's nothing corporate about it. It's weird to say, but even the shampoo chairs are super comfortable. I'm so glad they opened up shop so close to where I live and work. They also get bonus points because they're right across the street from Wheat Penny (one of my favorite restaurants in Dayton) and adjacent to all that the Oregon District has to offer. You can definitely make a whole afternoon or evening out of your trip to the salon.
