We received a gift certificate to Square One from a friend for my 8yo's birthday, as the friend knew my kiddo likes doing "grown up" self care things. The friend suggested this location in particular, as she thought the high number of queer and gender-nonconforming staff would help my gender-expansive kid feel safe and comfortable. She was absolutely right! The space itself is relaxing and elegant, with some perfect quirky touches. Kiddo decided on a massage, their first ever, and Morgan did an amazing job connecting with and treating them as the customer while still checking in with me. Two thirds of the way through, Kiddo told Morgan, "I wish you could keep massaging my back forever!" Success! We're already planning to go back for mani-pedis, and "massage at Square One" is going on the chore chart rewards list! read more

I cannot recommend Grace at Square One Salon and Spa highly enough - she is fantastic in every way! I booked an appointment with Grace because I'd read several positive online reviews that mentioned not only how well her clients liked the results of their hair appointments but how kind she is, and I had exactly the same experience! Getting your hair done can be a little intimidating, especially if you're going for a big change. Grace was such a wonderful person to work with - she listened to my ideas, helped me think through aspects I was indecisive about, and gave me a fresh cut and balayage that I am SO stoked on! There was no pressure to buy products, no air of judgement or stuffiness: nothing but kindness, enthusiasm, and serious talent. I hope Grace will be with Square One for a long time, as I would 100% come back as long as she's there (and follow wherever she goes!). I came in with hair that's been growing for years. It rested on my chest. I felt like it was time for a clean up so I grabbed a photo from my last cut and used that for my reference. I did not choose a model or random person with a facial structure different than mine. It was literally a photo clearly showing my hair in the length and style I usually wear. The most that should have been removed was roughly 4 inches to bring it up to my shoulders. I wear glasses and the stylist started in the back so I couldn't see what she was doing. HUGE mistake trusting her. Even though she has a photo of me and I clearly and explicitly said I wanted to go back to that she gave me the Karen Special. I measured and she took 10" of hair off. Two years of growth just gone. It makes my round face look round. I can't pull it up. The guy I was talking to ghosted me. And maybe worse of all is the complete and total shattering of any self esteem and confidence I had left. Now, it's only hair and will grow back but to completely ignore my reference photo (a clear photo of me) and any input I had before the cutting began-- unforgivable. Do you know how difficult it is to hide your emotions to someone who just spent 45 minutes butchering your image and identity just to get out of there without cussing anyone out and verbally hurting them as much as they hurt you? It's taken me about three weeks to write this because I'm still devastated. I will never recommend this salon to anyone for any reason whatsoever. read more

Probably the best hair salon in the Dayton area! It is on the pricier side but I've always been satisfied with the services and haircut/styling I get here! I've been twice. The only problem I've encountered is both times I've gotten my hair dyed here, it was very subtle and not really what I asked for color-wise. The color is always very long-lasting and can grow out well when I get it done here, just not exactly how I wanted it. I'd say it's worth it to come here, just specify with your stylist exactly how you want your hair to look. Overall great place! read more

I got absolutely farmed at this place. Don't want to be rude and name the stylist, but my haircut was completely botched. I'm a 22 year old guy from Mississippi I prefer a simple male haircut (4 on the sides and evened out with scissors on the top) you would of thought I asked her to paint the Mona Lisa by memory. The cut took 40 mins and most of that time was spent by me walking my stylist through the basics on how to cut hair. Brutal experience. It's been 3 weeks and my hair still looks terrible. I went there. I would never go back. The dude who cut my hair had the fundamentals but had no skills. I had to return into the salon to have him re-trim. I can only guess his name was Justin. It has been some time back and the only reason I am writing this is because upon looking for a salon this Square One came up with a 4 star review. I had to tell of my experience. A horrible job I received. Maybe others actual stylist may be great who are employed there but this young man had no clue. I would have been pleased with a proper haircut so more than the millisecond facial. A TOTAL WASTE of time and money. I had to go have it actually trimmed a couple days later & the stylist said the layers weren't touched. I have waist length hair. I came here with my sister because my husband and my dad wanted to go to the Air Force museum and we didn't want to go. The staff were very nice and greeted us when we arrived. I got a massage and the massage therapist was fantastic. She was able to get all the kinks out, especially in my shoulder. I also got a manicure and the person who did my nails was great too. My sister got a manicure/pedicure and she enjoyed it as well. The location is nice but I felt like parking was a bit tricky, even at 9 am in the morning. I ended up parking on a side street. Okay, time to write an updated review! This time, the negatives first: I had to change stylists. At the beginning of 2018, I attempted to get a blonde balayage done. I have asian hair and I knew it would be resistant, however, my stylist told me that she could probably accomplish this in 3 - 4 appointments and I agreed to it. Long story short, the first two appointments left my hair a bright orange and I had to go to several work conferences with very unprofessional looking hair. However, I was patient and optimistic for the last two appointments. Come the third appointment, after the bleach was finished and my hair was still orange/yellow, my stylist decided to tell me that she didn't think the products were taking to my hair. WAIT, WHAT...? You tell me this now after spending $400 total in these appointments...??!??! Needless to say, I was very annoyed. I paid, but decided that I would not see Abby again as a stylist after all that. If you have asian hair OR very dark hair that turns orange upon bleaching, please be cautious. I will not be going to Square One ever again for hair color services. Highlights: Despite all of that, I still really like this place. Despite my $400 mistake, I found a new stylist that is really good at cutting my hair. The main service I have done here now is eyebrow waxing, but I'll have to go to Centerville now because Janet moved locations. This salon is excellent. I found the ratings on Yelp after recently moving to the area and decided to give it a try. I made my appointment with Melinda. I had a simple cut and style, but she just made it wonderful. She gave me a scalp massage and a mini facial before my cut. It was SO relaxing and nice. Then the proceeded to cut my hair in expert fashion. The salon is in a nice part of town, and the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. The best part? I didn't feel compelled to buy anything or like she was trying to sell me something They do have such a nice set up of Aveda products in front that you probably will end up leaving with some yummy smelling something. I cannot help but assume the interaction my girlfriend and I had from this salon was anything other than simply homophobia... that or the stylist we unfortunately got stuck with had no idea what she was doing and the "curl specialist" title she holds at Square One should be revolved immediately. We had shown her a very clear picture of how my girlfriend wanted her hair cut, and what she walked out with was nothing even close to the photo. I had searched for a decent amount of time for a "Curl Specialist" in Dayton because my girlfriends hair is extremely curly, and I found Square One and their supposed curl specialist Tori. She very obviously does not know how to cut curly hair whatsoever- and having a title as such is remarkably deceiving. We left absolutely heartbroken as Tori cut off literally all of my girlfriends curls, and the haircut she received looked nothing like the photo whatsoever. We were getting looks from Tori the entire time, and her facial expressions through the whole experience looked rather disgusted. First of all, it is common knowledge that when you cut very curly hair wet, you're really cutting off far more hair than you think. When she began cutting her curls by the inches, I knew instantly it was going to be a disaster. It cannot be that hard to understand a distinct difference in hair that is extremely short, and a photo of hair that has curls hanging down past the brows all the way around. I am horribly disappointed in Square One for considering Tori a "Curl Specialist", and honestly I think she should return back to school. If I could give this place zero stars I would. I have been wronged there pretty badly not once, but twice. I will never be going back there, and can clearly state I will never recommend to literally anyone. I've been going to Square One for quite a while and used to leave feeling pretty good, as the stylists would normally do a great job. But recently, their staff has gone completely downhill. I went in a couple months ago to go a bit darker with my hair for the winter. I showed the stylists reference photos of what I wanted and gave a CLEAR explanation of what I was looking for. I came in with a blond balayage and left with my ends WAY darker than my roots (nearly black and I have brown hair). It was not what I asked for at all, and I cried as soon as I got into the car. Took a while to get used to, but I never ended up liking it. I remember sitting in the shampoo bowl and my stylist was literally freaking out because she knew she messed up and made it way darker than I had asked. My next experience was recently when I decided to give them a second chance (HUGE mistake). First of all, my stylist was rude and standoffish and did not make me feel comfortable during my experience. I asked for a natural highlight and maybe 1-2 inches off. I came in with pretty long hair and left with it by my collar bone. I am EXTREMELY disappointed as this is not what I asked for at all! Also, the customer service is horrible! I currently am at college about 2 hours away so I don't come home super often. Usually I try to schedule hair appointments when I am home. The past THREE TIMES my appointments have been canceled. When I ask if they have any other availabilities that day, they become extremely short and rude with me and do not even try to offer any help or condolences. It is extremely frustrating for me to have my appointments constantly canceled, which is another reason why I will not be returning. This is a great place to go if you want your confidence absolutely destroyed. Do better! read more

This is a terrible salon. 3 days after I'd spent 4 hr having my hair colored there, it went right back to the same color as before. Did they semi perm dye? I was going to cancel the hair cut appt I'd made and go somewhere else. However, I told the receptionist why I didn't want to keep the appt and she said to keep the appt, they would comp me for getting the color fixed. 2 Saturdays ago I was going back to get it fixed, and compensated, when a half hr before my appt I get a call telling me the stylist was running very behind, and my appt would have to be bumped and rescheduled. You'd think since my appt was for a fix I'd have been a priority. But no, I was bumped. Had to reschedule for yet another 2 weeks out. And then I get a text today saying the stylist would be out on Sat, 8/7, and I can't get in w anyone for another week. Again...bump someone else this time so you can fix was wasn't done correctly on my hair the first time...didn't have any trouble bumping me in favor of other appointments. And it's been about 2 mos since my first appointment there. Terrible experience. read more

This salon really was a waste of time for me. So I just moved to Dayton from Chicago and had heard this was one of the best salons in Dayton. Naturally, I had to check it out. I came in about two weeks ago to have my hair dyed grey by a sweet girl named Beth. They didn't already have the color so she had to go out and get it herself, which was fine. But I can't help to think why wouldn't they have grey hair color? It's a hair salon. Anyway, I wanted my new hair to be super unique and edgy, which is why I decided to go to a "trendier" hair salon. She totally played it safe with my hair. I think she was unsure from the very beginning. I'm not sure if she even knew how to respond to my request (I admit, I can be difficult at times). She did grey highlights that were super ashy and they ended up basically blending in with my brown hair. I was there a little over 2 hours and there was BARELY a difference. I could tell she wanted to play it safe because she didn't want it to look bad. However, it was too safe and boring for me. I get that this is Dayton Ohio but if I go to a salon that markets themselves as a trendy or chic place, I expect them to know the trends and be somewhat of risk-takers. This place was so basic. I just want to have a stylist who is enthusiastic about what they do and wants to talk with me about the trends! why is that so hard to ask for around here? The price was not worth it. Total let-down. $80 for grey highlights that blended in with my hair (it would have been $120 for all over). AND get this... she never proceeded to tell me about up-keep and how to keep it that way. So here I am...two weeks later and the grey has almost entirely faded into blonde. If I schedule another appointment that'll be another $80....ridiculous! Anyway, it was a waste of time and money. Today my Mom and I enjoyed a mother daughter spa day at Square One. I started with a facial by Jamee and my Mom with a massage with Tiffany. Mom enjoyed the massage, she said Tiffany was friendly, pleasant and adjusted pressure as requested. My facial was okay, I've had estheticians ask you a variety of questions to prep with the right products but she didn't say much I told her I had sensitive skin. My Mom's facial with Eric, she said he was quiet and also didn't ask her any questions she had to tell him she had rosacea. She then had a manicure with Tim which was good & he did a great job on her cuticles. What finished off my visit is with a massage by Dorian and what a treat it was truly one of the best massages ever. He worked through all of the knots especially in my back, he's truly a master at his craft. Ask for him if you're looking for a great massage in Dayton. Note parking can be a challenge we were a few minutes late today due to finding a parking spot, all of the nearby meters were full, parked on a side street. This is the very first place I have ever had a successful inverted bob haircut that I actually loved. Every couple years or less, I like to donate 10 inches of my hair to Locks of Love and I always end up getting a bob because it drastically reduces my tresses. My head is so round that I usually look like a ball when all is said and done, no matter what I ask of the hairdresser. Square One Salon & Spa did not end up on my list of disappointments! First of all, I acted on impulse thinking the night before that I was sick of my earmuffs getting stuck in my hair and my purse falling off my shoulder because of my long hair so it was time to donate it. The next morning before I took the kiddos to school, I hopped on the computer, searched Yelp for the best hair salons and found Square One. Their website offered online booking, thankfully, which had two openings at 9:00 a.m. Although, I have to admit, the process was a little confusing because I had to buy a giftcard in order to confirm the appointment online; it probably would have been simpler had I called but it was 7:40 a.m. so they were not open. Anyhow, appointment booked, confirmed, and directions in hand, I set out after dropping my youngest off at preschool. Square One is located downtown near the Oregon District and is pretty easy to find. The salon is open and inviting; the receptionists were helpful and offered me tea which was yummy (especially because I have a cold). Their waiting area is in another room, past the receptionist's desk, and is quite soothing and quiet with comfortable sofa lounge seating. The actual hair salon area is past the waiting room and is nice and bright, open and long. My hairdresser, Melinda Lee, was very friendly and explained what my experience entailed because it was not simply a cut and style. First, she chopped the 10 inches off, then gave me a scalp massage with a little extra neck & shoulder massage for the donation (I told you she was so nice!). Then she led me to a separate area where they do the hair washing. During the hair conditioning time, they also perform a mini facial and wrap your face in a lovely warm towel, it felt wonderful. The scalp massage and mini facial are included in the price of the cut & style! Melinda then proceeded to cut my hair to perfection and took the fact that my hair poofs in humidity which makes it my head more ball-like when I have a bob and thinned out my hair as well. She gave me the best inverted bob possible within an hour's time and I was absolutely amazed at the results. Now, there are three price ranges: Basic(?), Advanced (that's what Melinda was), and Master. I paid $43 plus tip and this is less than some places I have gone to in the past which have given me horrible looking disastrous cuts and none of the extras. I liked this salon and got great cuts and color there, but always found them lacking in terms of friendly customer service. I endured a lot of long awkward appointments because my stylist and her assistant clearly hated each other and would spend my whole appointment seething and glaring at each other over my head in stony silence. The nail services at Centerville were amazing, but I had to give them up when they cut hours and I could no longer get a Sunday appt, which I get, but was bummed about. I finally quit going when they confirmed my cut and color appointment for the wrong time and then refused to see me when I arrived at the time they confirmed for. I even showed them the confirmation text and they wouldn't budge. I drive 45 minutes each way to get there, so that was an hour and a half wasted for their mistake, not mine. Their stance was that they tried to call me with the correct time that morning and I should have picked up. When I asked what number they called, it was the wrong one. They had called my SON'S phone and he was in school at the time. When I got home and tried to reschedule, I discovered that the ultra-rude receptionist I had dealt with had apparently deleted my online account. Fine by me Square One - I'll never return. read more

The stylist and receptionists are always so nice and friendly they offer this really wonderful coffee and tea My haircut always looks very modern and fresh, the stylists are in touch with the trends and current "in" looks. My hair always looks great and very sleek when I walk out. If you change your mind mid-haircut, the stylists are very understanding and make you look great. Finally, the location is really cool. It's downtown and really industrial looking. I definitely feel that I've stepped out of Dayton for a little bit when I'm there. This is definitely my go-to salon and I will come back whenever I want to get a really pretty cut and feel pampered for a little bit. read more

Yesterday was my second visit, which indicates the initial experience was positive. Unfortunately not so much the case with my return trip. Had the same stylist who, as I acknowledged to her could not have remembered since last November any details about me (blow dry only and no use of styling products), so I reminded her of these preferences. Then showed her a head-shot photo of myself from two years ago, emphasizing that this style is what I wanted her to replicate -- nothing complicated at all, a chin-length bob with wispy, light bangs. She initially resisted slightly to the bangs so we talked, actually negotiating what she would do vs. what I wanted (and had shown with the visual example of a photo). Twenty minutes later (this time includes the shampoo which, by the way, was great and the best part of the appointment), after paying $50+ for a cut and style that I sadly could've gotten for far less than half at a Great Clips, I was out the door as a dissatisfied customer. I did not express disappointment to the stylist before leaving because at that point I'd have been wary of any attempts made to correct the work done. As all previous experiences at Square One had been positive (was a regular for some years with the fabulously talented Alan L.'s downtown), I haven't written off the salon, but will not ever go back to the Oak Creek (sp? I would like to write two separate reviews however the stars reflect a good hair experience with a poor makeup experience. The hair experience: I paid for a blowout. The stylist listened to what I wanted and took the time to achieve that style. They offer a complimentary facial mask while your hair is conditioning--nice touch! The makeup experience: I'm not from Dayton and I didn't take the time to read the yelp reviews to find a good makeup artist to request. I guess I just thought everyone who was working the makeup counter knew how to apply makeup better than I can. I asked for an evening look to go with a black formal dress. I told her the colors that aren't complimentary to me. And i told her I like makeup that brings out my eyes. For the next 30 min I sit there and listen to her questions. Questions about how much sleep I get. She then goes on to tell me that my pregnancy has done a doozy on my skin. I had one small blemish on my lip and she has no idea what my skin looked like before pregnancy. I knew what she was trying to do--to sell me products. Anyways, it wasn't appreciated. Anyways, once I felt her awkwardly applying the eye shadow, I knew I had to see what she's doing. But I didn't. I waited patiently until she was ready. Or, at least until my husband walked in and I caught his expression which was comical. I finally looked in the mirror--it was terrible. The eye shadow was a blotchy same shade of brown that extended all the way to my eyebrow. My lashes were invisible bc she chose a brown mascara (remember black dress), my cheeks--she placed color square in the middle so I resembled a clown. There was nothing redeemable about what she did. So I told her that I would feel comfortable doing the makeup at my hotel room and that I wasn't communicating what I wanted clearly. I even said I would buy an eyeliner so i wasn't just leaving her hanging. But she refused to let me go without me being completely rude. So, I sat there, applying the makeup on myself. While she stands there awkwardly. And when I was done, she didn't apologize, she didn't go up to the counter with me. Therefore I spent around $40 to apply the makeup myself. I wish I could remember her name. But management could look it up if they were so inclined. I was last Saturday for 9am hair and I added on a makeup session right after. It was under Megan. She really shouldn't do makeup. Again, I enjoyed the hair experience. The salon was beautiful. But oof, avoid the makeup counter. read more

This was a remarkably bad experience. Not horrendous mind you. I went in to buy some Aveda shampoo and decided to schedule an appointment for later that week. I specifically asked how experienced was the stylist cutting my hair. The receptionist responded by saying the person had "a year of experience". The salon seemed nice (up to par with what I've come to expect from Aveda), and people were friendly, however 2 days later when I went to straighten my new mid length bob from the waves I left the salon with I found out my hair was an inch shorter on one side. Yes, a solid inch shorter. I sat in even posture when getting the cut, but noticed the stylist never checked the length. Thank god it was no trouble for me to call back the following day to get an appointment for a fix. When I made the call I even specifically asked for someone with more experience, I didn't get upset at all on the phone, all I wanted was to be cut by someone who wasn't going to take up more time and length by messing it up again. Well, the cut is nice, finally closer to all one length and I wasn't going to write a review except I went to check out and the girl at the counter told me the price and it happened to be the same as the previous cut. I then responded with "it's a re-do" and she said it's free but then I asked her how those two stylist were the same price when all I had asked when coming back was to have a more experience stylist and the girl responded with "well [the second stylist] has worked at a non Aveda salon for a few years and she's not straight out of school". WTF??? Trying to be polite but looking confused I mentioned being told the first stylist had a year of experience and she repeated "yes, school" and didn't see anything wrong with my experience?!? What a joke?? This is all on top of the fact that there were gigantic dust bunnies on the wall of the shampoo area like no one had ever looked at the wall before (except for probably ever person who's gotten a wash) This is not a complaint about the stylist, it's a complaint about the general training and management of the service staff and a warning to those who don't have my flexibility in schedule. read more

I would have to say yeah but service was great you know if you're going there for your basic highlight or your basic colors you know that's fine but don't go there if you want anything extravagant or out of the ordinary they just cannot do it I was very very disappointed when I could not get done what I wanted to get done because they did not have the colors and they were not willing to work with me so I will not go back ever again read more

Square one was working miracles today. The Miami Valley Area had several tornados which has shaken everyone and cut electric, water and gas to many people. Square One was without water and electric and they used their other locations to make sure their customers got their needs met. They moved heaven and earth to move their stylist and clients to get it done. Kudos to the Administrative Team for bending over backwards. As I was leaving today they had even found bottled water for their employees and clients. Trust me bottled water is a difficult commodity to come by. Thank you to Square One for working so hard! I still love this place! I was studying abroad and decided to get a last-minute haircut the night before I was set to fly out. Faun was amazingly accommodating throughout the entire process and gave me the best haircut I've ever had! I have extremely long, thick hair and she was able to thin it out without losing volume. I absolutely can't wait to come back and get my hair cut and styled again by her. I will always recommend Square One to anyone :) read more

This is, in my opinion, the best hair salon in Dayton. Everytime I go to Square One I get soooo many compliments on my hair! The only downsides are that they are pretty expensive (they use Aveda products) and sometimes the wait is a bit long. When I get a cut and highlight I am usually there for 3+ hours. I wish I could give 1/2 stars, as I'd probably go with 3 1/2 stars. I'm torn as to my overall impression with the place. I was recommended to the salon by a fellow military spouse as I just moved to the area and was seriously in need of a good cut and highlights. I had my appointment on Saturday, which was the day after a major crazy storm. Apparently their Centreville location was still without power; in addition this location's Internet and computer systems were down and did not have access to their appointment book or schedule for the day. There were a ton of employees working and the place was quite busy at 9:15am, only 15 minutes after they opened. I was taken back by my stylist at my appointment time and didn't have to wait at all which was good. I had a two hour appointment block as I was getting a partial highlight and cut. My stylist was friendly and personable, however she left me several times for long periods of time. I was patient with it at first and then I got irritated as time went on. She would tell me that she was going to leave my highlights process for 10 more minutes and not come back for 15 to 20 minutes. Then I was left in the shampooing area while she spoke with another client for what seemed to me like quite a long time. While I did have a toner on my hair that needed to sit for certain amount of time, I felt like I was left for an extended period of time past the time needed. It was very chaotic in the salon on Saturday as a result of the previous day's storm. I had brought in a photo for inspiration on this type of look I was going for, and once the whole thing was said and done my new look wasn't as drastic of a change as I was hoping it to be. Luckily my stylist realized that without me having to say anything to her about it, and offered for me to come back in a week or so to get more highlights added to my hair. I plan to do this and hope to have a somewhat better experience. Don't get me wrong the salon was very nice and had a great atmosphere, offers you a fresh beverage when you enter, and is very trendy and modern. Book for as much as I'm paying I expected everything to be perfect. I feel like I might have had a different experience had I not have my appointment after this unexpected storm, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. read more
