Instead of a YELP review, this should be a YIKES!! review. The location is prime for all the goings on in Ocracoke. So there you go, there's the 2 stars. Now let's see what happened to the other 3 stars. I got a call from Silver Lake just before boarding the ferry from Cedar Island. Nice enough lady, telling me that the office will close at 5pm, and that my room key will be in the late arrival box. Late arrival? Huh? Most travelers don't even roll into town until 5. Okay I thought, my adventure will extend beyond the ferry ride. I did arrive late. I got there at 6:30. Sheez, late at 6:30, in what world is 6:30 late. Well, in Island world 6:30 is late. Laid-back, I'll get to it....eventually. Sure enough, as the lady told me, my key was in the box, the "Late arrival box". LoL. I found the room charming, in a 1930s kind of way. Wood everywhere, floors, wall paneling, shutters, furniture, you know, homey, IF YOU'RE A LUMBERJACK! I attempted to log on to the WiFi, but no matter how many times I tried, numerous number variations, upper case, lower case, it just wasn't happening. I know, I'll go to the office for help. Oh, that's right the office is closed. I was a 6:30 late check in. So, no Internet. Maybe I'll watch a few minutes of TV before dinner. I pop it on, fuzzy channels. It's probably a bad cable connection I thought, so I checked the cable. It wasn't hard to get to, it was coming out of the wall, at eye level, above the T V, right next to the plug. Curious place for an electrical outlet, but I guess that's the way it was back in the 30s. I managed to get some fairly decent reception. The show I turned on was Bar Rescue. Bad timing for The Silver Lake Motel. The Rescue guy was pointing out everything that was wrong, and most applied to what I was experiencing. Bottom line, lack of pride in ownership. My advice, stay away from Silver Lake. If enough do, maybe it'll close down before it reaches its 100th anniversary. Quick Tip: If you're a glutton for punishment, then book a stay at Silver Lake. But if you want to avoid being a late arrival, I suggest getting there before sunrise. read more

I made reservations on line and made note of my mother being handicapped. The owner called me to ask if I would like a room closer to the handicapped ramp, so sweet. The hotel is older, but almost everything in Ocracoke is, the sheets looked new, as did the pillows, towels, etc. The bed was very comfortable. The location is awesome. Unfortunately a Northeaster blew in and the ferry over to the mainland (Cedar Island) was closed! I had my 80 year old mother and 3 grandchildren. Meredith called the local number and a friend of hers to get the ferry schedules and offered to hold our room, even left the keys in the room with the doors unlocked just incase we could not get the Hatteras Ferry and had to turn around and stay. On our way to the car she stopped and picked some flowers and put them in a bottle of water to give my mamma for Mother's Day. Meredith could not have been more helpful and kind. She certainly did everything she could to help relieve some of my stress. Sometimes it's not all about the visual beauty, it's about the comfort, cleanliness and good old southern hospitality that counts; Silver Lake and Meredith accomplished both of those traits :-) read more

We stayed here for one night as we were passing through and I would not recommend it. It's super old and run down and needs major updating. Paint is peeling, wall units that are loud and dripping all over the floor, tiny fridge in the room, no ice machine, no hot water in the sink, terrible beds, and the smell in the room was unbearable for me. We aired the room out for hours and it was still really bad. The beds creak and have thin mattresses and sag. Oh yes, and no internet, it kept dropping the signal. In a town with a hundred places to stay it's amazing that this has so many guests, I think it's because of the price. It's very affordable. Two good things; the location and the breakfast. It was a continental breakfast that was quite nice, and the coffee was very good. Other than that, no thank you. read more

My husband and I, along with my son and daughter in law, stayed at the Silver Lake Motel for 3 nights (Sat - Tues) in Aug 2012. Their rates are very reasonable. It is in a great location right in the heart of Ocracoke with a view of Silver Lake across the street. We had a 2 bedroom suite w queen beds. One bathroom with shower/tub. It had a living room w sofa and love seat, TV w/ cable ( even HBO), a full kitchen w/ full sized fridge, stove, microwave, blender, coffee pot, dishes, pots and pans, and even paper towel and dishwashing liquid. We also had our own balcony with chairs and a hammock! The Silver Lake is a bit dated and could use some updating, but it is quite charming and everything was super clean. It fits right in with the laid back vibe of the Ocracoke/Hatteras region. Don't expect to have luxury here The queen beds weren't the best but were comfortable. You might want to bring your own pillow. A very nice free Continental Breakfast was provided in the office lobby in the adjacent building and included coffee, teas,, juices, bagels, pastries, cereals, and real butter, jam, and cream cheese. Our room was serviced each day; beds made and clean towels provided. Would stay here again. It was nice to be able to walk to the shops and restaurants, and boat tours and water sports rentals (kayaks, paddle boards etc) are right across the street. Bicycle and golf cart rentals are a few doors down. Best beach ever just a short drive or bike away! The Silver Lake was our recharging station between all of the many activities and it was nice that it was in such a central location! read more

Convenient location and friendly staff. Very clean. On the downside, the mattress is beyond horrible. Appears a review from 5 years ago mentioned this and still the same old very saggy mattresses! Yes, still problems with internet connection. The rooms (perhaps not all) have connecting doors and therefore you can hear clearly conversations in your neighbor's room. read more

The location is the best thing about this place. Within walking distance of 2/3 of the town: flatbread pizza, organic grocery, snow cones, ice cream, jet ski/ water sports rental. The front porch sitting - great for listening to the live music from the bar across the street! The rooms are small- acceptable. The decor is 1970's motel meets 30 years of repairs - okay. Everything works, is in good repair. The bathroom was clean, small, functional. Beds are small, with old mattresses and the 1970's polyester bedspread- bleh. As much as the place is well located, and the price was right, we couldn't stay a second night b/c of the beds. read more

In sum, the place was clean clean clean. I am not a fan at sleeping in motels and such. Regardless, if it is a high end hotel. I find that even the most expensive of resorts are not necessarily sanitary. I was very impressed how clean the room appeared. Especially surprising since the hotel allow dogs. I enjoyed staying here, the rates were reasonable and the staff were extremely helpful. I was tickled pink that the hotel manager let us check in early. It was too hot for my dog and we needed to get her out of the heat. We were allowed to check in almost 4 hour early with no additional fees. Said top notch customer egocentric business practices will keep this place booming. A few areas of the room could use a bit of plaster here, new glue there for the wall paper- but in all seriousness the place was CLEAN. Cleaner than the expensive ocean front house we rented the week earlier. Dog park. Love it. A nice quaint area for my doggie to do her business without me needing to drag her out in the heat again (as you can tell we obviously stayed during a week the temperatures were in the mid-90's). This was a very good spot to be in town. But there was many downfalls. The first major thing is that the cleaning service continued to put up do not disturb signs on our door so our room did not get cleaned for our whole week stay. Then the room had many issues the air conditioning was overly loud, the beds were very hard, the rooms had horrible lighting, along with the bottle opener in the bathroom. Then the staff were hugely inappropriate. The staff invited there freinds to come and hang out along with talking about inappropriate topics. read more

Beware: The Pirates of Ocracoke retained more class and efficiency than the employees and maintenance at this place. Here are some other title options for my review: "Sleep depravation in ocracoke" "Avoid if you plan on sleeping" "Silver Lake Slums." I am blessed that I get to travel often. But my work life is such I don't get much actual vacation time. So how excited was I to get two nights to myself and pick ocracoke as my rest and relaxation destination. I'm familiar with ocracoke from coming here as a kid. I'm also familiar with the quirks of travel and I've learned to never be too picky or critical about a low budget hotel accommodation but my experience this week is worth taking time out of my day to share with you... The motel hotel is what it is. Not updated and cabin like. Box TVs from the 90s and vintage bathroom wallpaper out of a horror movie. And I actually love all that. It reminds me of my childhood. But what is lacking is the ability to actually sleep. My first evening as I prepared for bed I immediately realized the window AC unit was making a high pitched screeching noise. (I will post video of the noise on yelp too.) It was past the time anyone was available at the front desk and again I've learned not to be too picky so I attempt to sleep. This was impossible. Whatever magic frequency emitting from the AC unit made it impossible to ever dose off. At one point I turned it off and did fall asleep for a couple hours only to wake up covered in sweat. So bad in fact I had to literally lay on the opposite side of the bed as the other side was soaked from perspiration. Gross. I also turned the ac back on and so alas I was unable to sleep. I tried to pump my blood full of coffee to function through the next day and hit the beach thinking I'll roll with it and just try to deal with the ac one more night. When I returned to the room to shower after the beach though im immediate confronted with that noise from the AC and realized it just wasn't manageable. At that point I took a video of the ac unit and it's noise to the front desk. A thinner blond lady was helpful and allowed me to move one room over. Ah so much better and the unit even worked better. The room cooled down quickly. I was then out for the rest of the day and evening. I returned after a late visit to Howard's pub and was looking forward to finally sleeping in as check out isn't till 11pm. Fast forward to a little after 7:30am when a maid comes and enters my room, sees me then leaves. I then try desperately to fall back asleep. But between 7:30 and 8:30 my room is entered THREE TIMES by the maid service and then on the FOURTH TIME there's a dude knocking on my door saying "hey buddy hey buddy" trying to get me up. I search for a shirt and by the time I open the door he has gone one room over to where my parents happen to be staying to ask them if THEY KNOW WHO THE PERSON NEXT DOOR IS AND WHY AM I THERE! Seems to me that question should have been brought to the manager, their supervisor or front desk NOT ANOTHER GUEST A ROOM OVER. So obviously the front desk lady from the previous day had not noted that I was moved to a different room. No one knew that and now I'm being woken up by the most incompetent turn over service I've ever had the horror of encountering. At this point I'm awake with no chance of getting back to sleep for a second day and furious. I shower and pack as quickly as I can and left the room a little after 9am. When I explained to the front desk how awful my experience was a gentleman (I use that term loosely) who I assume is with maintenance steps in and attempts to argue with me that no one was in my room that early. The front desk lady attempts to correct him as she already knew someone had been in my room. He continues to try and argue. I wished them good luck in life and left. I was not compensated a dime for all the issues I had during my two night stay and all I got was a defensive attitude and an argument when I expressed the frustration of my experience. I hope someone comes and purchases this business who really cares about it and gets staff half way equipped with common sense and social skills. Unit then, avoid this motel like the plague. Clean simple beach motel. Our trip was memorial day weekend 2016. Reasonably priced. Great proximity to restaurants, bars, stores. We stayed on the 2nd floor. 1 bedroom 1 bath unit. Small, but all you need, you're at the beach - get outside! Nice balcony with hammock. Only one chair on balcony but we brought up our beach chairs to sit on. Beautiful harbor view. Bed was not comfortable for my back (I prefer firm), but my husband loved it. Small mini fridge. Tips: bring own toiletries, bring own coolers for drinks and food. We will be returning. We may try out a suite next time. read more

My fiancé and I along with our son stayed the weekend here for the Pirate Jamboree on the island for Halloween this year. Reasonable Rates compared to other Hotels, Offer late check in (office closes at 8,and keep in mind the Ferry Ride is a little over an hour to the island), 2 Floors full of rooms. Our room had the basic necessities including 2 Queen Beds, a TV, Mini Fridge, one bathroom w/shower but they offer rooms with a Full kitchenette if needed! Also some of the rooms have rocking chairs or hammocks outside the rooms. They offer continental breakfast that went beyond the usual. They offered a variety of delicious pastries, bagels, muffins had the large variety of the little cereal boxes (we ate as kids!), a rack full of teas, juices, coffee and condiments. No eggs and bacon but that's okay! The location was perfect for us, we were right near the harbor and rental place for golf carts and bike rentals, restaurants and shops,. The Motel doesn't have a restaurant but it is in walking distance to a few other places to dine in. If you have leftovers and not a microwave in your room you can warm it up in the breakfast area. Also in the front office they have a computer and a TV you can access. The front desk was friendly and helpful during our stay. They were also able to help us find a place to fish without going out on a charter boat. I would definitely stay here again. Don't waste your money. This is a horrible hotel and the manager needs to go back to hospitality school. Beds are hard, hot water took ten minutes to even warm up, no remotes to the tv, they told me on the phone you can see the harbor, you cannot. And if your handicap mind as well sleep in your car on the beach, no access whatsoever. we was booked for 3 night only stayed one. please just scroll on with this hotel. read more

My family of four plus our small dog stayed here Aug 15, 16th. We don't have many choices when traveling with the dog. So it's always nerve wracking to check into a pet room. But we were happy. It was clean. It had what we needed. (Maybe a microwave in the room would top it off, actually!) It's nothing fancy. But we can't afford fancy. So for the price, this was good. The beds were comfy. We all slept fine. I did a bug check as I always do these days and found nothing. So that's good! The only bugs were the millions of mosquitoes outside. But that's island life. Lol. It was a GREAT location. Right in the heart of the action. Right across from the Jolly Roger restaurant/pub, which we love. The sunset from there is breathtaking, too. (Unfortunately it was cloudy these days.) The staff were friendly from my first call to check out. They were helpful and smiling. The coolest part of the stay was the continental breakfast in the morning. I've personally never seen one quite like this! It had everything "continental-ish" you could think of! I would call it a "continental buffet". We're used to a plate of small muffins and little pints of orange juice. Well, this was like a smorgasboard!! There were muffins, pastries, a few different juices, coffee, pints of milk, fruit, bagels, a toaster, butter, cream cheese, a variety of mini cereals.......probably more I'm forgetting. I don't like to wake early, but I did for this!! We loved the breakfast!! Great job with that! And there was a microwave there too, so if we really needed it, we could have used that. We would stay here again. No problems. No complaints. I hope we DO come again. Just remember, it's nothing fancy. It's your standard motel room. Some people are so picky about not having a flat screen TV or the right colored walls....you're in Ocracoke! Who cares! (There is a TV, and cable, fyi!) We didn't really try the wi-fi, so I can't say how that was. I think the kids tried it and it worked. You ask for the password at the office. Hope to be back! :-) read more

Nice location. That's about it. Room smelled heavy with mold and window ledge was covered in it. Tub did not drain. Toilet never stopped running. Shower had a dirty washcloth from a previous guest hanging in it. Candy wrappers were under the bed. There's a difference between rustic and nasty. We would not return or recommend. read more

My boyfriend and I went here for a nice overnight vacation. This is the worst place I have ever stayed in. Half the electrical outlets didn't work, the room smelled like a urinal, the sheets were dirty and awful, the bed was the noisiest, most uncomfortable thing I've ever laid on, the towels felt more like pumice stones, the toiletries they provide you are even bad. I'm not a complainer by any means, but this was certainly not worth the almost $200 we spent on it. The only nice thing I have to say is the hammock looking out on the water was nice. For the next person who stays there, I left the shampoo I had to buy for you. read more

This place was quite charming and in a great location, in the heart of town on Ocracoke island. The best part was the huge deck with plenty of seating and a hammock, overlooking palm trees and the silver lake docks. We saw pelicans every morning. Walking distance to everything in town. Adjacent to coffee and ice cream shop and across form water sport rentals. We took advantage of both! We had a great time and would stay here again. read more

When reading reviews, please don't go off older posts. They have done alot of work here. We rented 2 bedroom on the second floor and had a fabulous view of the lake. Beds were comfortables, room was very clean. Rooms still need further renovation, but the only things that didn't work were the ice maker and they had all the ice we needed at the front desk, and the internet which was fine at the main building, just didn't work in ours. We stayed only one night which was fine for October giving us just enough time to thoroughly explore the island. I would definately stay here again. read more

Went in June 2015. Maid service is a bag of towels left on your porch. Open lightbulb in bathroom. Hot and cold backwards on tub (burn hazard). Bring your own toiletries. When we talked to locals about this motel they had heard it before. The only good thing is porch hammock. Reading other reviews they run hot and cold, so you are playing roulette staying there. read more

My family and I stayed here last week for 3 nights. We had a 2 bedroom suite on the second floor, because of a review that we had read online, telling of the wonderful view, etc. We did not have that same experience! We booked this knowing it was not a 5 star motel and did not expect that. We did not want the expense of that, either, but what enticed us was the 2 bedrooms, a full kitchen and living room, plus location. At first sight it appeared to be clean, but wasn't(I'll get to that later). We knew the kitchen was sparse(per review). We had planned only to cook breakfast to be cooked there and that was a good choice because there was not one baking pan or sheet to use the oven. There was a microwave, blender and coffee pot. No toaster. There was some silverware: one teaspoon, a few tablespoons and some butter knives. Again we were not expecting a complete kitchen but it did present some issues. But at least we prepared and brought some plastic silverware. But that wasn't the biggest issue. We are pretty easy and laid back people and didn't expect a lot but what we did expect was some customer service and help if we needed it. We did not get that. On the morning after our arrival we realized we needed toilet paper as there was a partial roll when we arrived and with three people we would need a back up.(Actually by morning we were just about out).We went to the office and the person running the office said "Your room will be serviced today". We explained we needed it now. He appeared very put out but did give us 1 roll. Not friendly at all and appeared irritated we asked. The next day we told the office our commode was loose and it moved when you sat down. We were concerned and a little afraid to use it. We were told someone would be up to repair but that did not happen. BUT the worst issue to me was that night I broke a glass that shattered all over the tile floor. I actually cut my foot. My sister called to see if someone could help and we were told housekeeping went home for the day. (It was 5 PM). He said we could come down and get a broom. When my sister went down she asked for a mop, also, and explained it shattered like dust and was in the grout and unsafe. He said he didn't have one and have her a towel to clean it up. (This is where the cleanliness comes in).As we tried to clean it up the towel was black from the floor. It had not been cleaned for a while, And the view was the back of a seafood store. You could see the harbor, and the deck was nice. Loved the hammock. We would not return to Silver Lakes. Price was reasonable. Customer service was non-existant. And we did need assistance. We could have handled the rip in the sofa, the sparse kitchen, the dirty floor but after the service was so bad it was just the icing on the cake. I suggest not there. read more

The best thing about this place was the hammock. It smelled so bad of Lysol it was burning our noses, but then that wore off and the real smell of piss set in. This place was gross, gross and more gross. I have stayed in better hunting shacks in the north woods of Wisconsin. Bare bulbs in the bathroom, an exhaust fan so loud we turned it off before it fell out of the ceiling. The bed: about 30 years old and had a thick piece of foam on top and noisy as hell. Good thing I love my wife because we had to share the middle of the bed all night as the mattress was so saggy. Not romantic. It was a night to endure, not enjoy. OLD, TIRED and NASTY. Bad enough to make me set up a Yelp account! read more
