I was personally helped by Brian , who assisted me in getting a new goalie mask, and explained the benefits of the cat eye cage and much more , as well as ensuring a good fit. He even went out of his way to place the dangler onto the mask for safety. I've had no issues with the mask, and have made this rink my primary practice rink because of the quality service I received. Hidden gem for sure. My family had a good time here during public open skate. Maybe there should be a sign saying when the snack bar is open (last I heard it's closed on Mondays), since so many ppl seem to be upset about it. But it was open when we went last couple of times and people seemed tk be happy with the food. We only used the vending machines and got Thrifty scoops so they were obviously tasty to us. I almost hesitate to leave this review because once it gets out what a hidden gem this is, it might wreck the whole thing. Skating Edge is the neighborhood local rink you always wished for. If Toyota is the high tech, state of the art facility where the epic third-act battles take place, Skating Edge is the storied ice where the wizened master teaches the hero the true heart of the game when they've lost perspective. Yes, it's an aging facility. Ski-boot style rentals and all. But that's part of its charm. And the recent upgrades and investments have enhanced the venue without destroying what makes it unique. From the first sight of the original design aesthetic continuing to be embraced - - hand-painted wooden signs, an amazing European feel wooden roof atop the sheet, natural sunlight hitting the ice from a large window to the north, the second you walk through the door you feel transported in the same way fun barns like Snoopy's Home Ice is up north. The staff is warm and friendly, treating you like an old friend even if you've never been there. From the receptionists to the event planners, to the staff that doubles as the rental window crew on-I've maintenance crew and among several other jobs. The place feels like a family in the best possible way. There's no eye-rolling, no attitudes, just good people. The biggest thing of note is the money, time, and passion that have gone into upgrading both the previously abandoned pro shop and the "snack bar." I put snack bar in quotations because Sam and Crew's culinary guidance really elevate this beyond hot dogs and nachos that you'd expect at a rink - think Asian fusion rice bowls, chicken salad, spiral fried potatoes, epic pizzas for parties, and so much more. Legend Has It is more trendy food truck than generic catering eats. There's also a cooler proudly displaying the real deal Thrifty ice cream. Yes, Thrifty. Cylindrical scoop and all. And it's all served with pride and a smile. It says a lot that an enshrined photo of Paul Newman's Reggie Dunlop hangs next to the window. It really is the embodiment of the feel here. Old time hockey. Like Eddie Shore. Alexandra the office manager is quick and responsive to requests about parties and more, leading to an all-around laid back and low-key birthday party experience that again just makes this feel like a small town neighborhood haunt. Recurring events for skaters and hockey players alike continue to build a growing and thriving community in the venue. Multiple leagues of all ages make hockey accessible, as we were clearing out the little ones were warming up for their games that took place in a divided rink, where encouraging parents surrounded their kids and cheered as if it were an NHL playoff game. And on top of it all, this is the home of LMU Ice Hockey - which happens to be my alma mater, and exhibits the same values and heart that this rink does. Just take a glance at the outside of the home team's locker room and you know how handmade and heartfelt this all is. And you can come attend their home games as a spectator, which I highly recommend. So anyway... shh... keep it secret. Keep it safe. Don't let the outside world turn this Average Joes into a Globo Gym. But also give them your business as frequently as you can so this place can continue to live and breathe. read more

This is a great place to take your family to go skating. I've been skating here for a long time play hockey here for many years. The rink itself definitely needs to be redone. There's no restaurant next-door anymore. The snack stand isn't open. The pro shop isn't open. It really needs to be overhauled and brought back to life but at least it's still open and I give them credit for that. read more

Our granddaughter (8yo) had her best birthday celebration here and loved every minute of their ice skating summer camp! Jacki, Skating Director, and her entire staff are the most friendly and welcoming group of people! The facility is nice and roomy, with a snack bar and private party room. Plenty parking. This place is extremely cold. There is no food options. The restaurant has been closed for a long time. There are some vending machines but not sure how often things have been in there. The ice is okay. The rink is just large enough to practice on and do recreational skating. There is only one rink. read more

Personally, I like this venue. It's maybe not in the best part of the South Bay, nor might not have aesthetic curb appeal as you drive by and look at it, but don't judge a book by it's cover. Inside is a basic set up, no-frills, but very practical. It has a huge ice skating rink. It reminds me of what you'd see in the 70's and not some fancy expensive hipster set-up like what happened with bowling alleys (where there's the down n' dirty lanes -vs- the fancy expensive laser light show lanes serving craft beer and garlic fries). We had a good time overall. With a child of 3-4 who does not know how to skate, I'd recommend you rent the Ice Seal, which is a "walker" assistant and a "rider" they can sit on and you push (and it helps you balance as well). It was $10 to rent... the best $10 I ever spent !!! Otherwise, we would have been frustrated with ice skating as beginners and gave up within 20 minutes and not making it around the rink even once... but with the Ice Seal, we were good and had fun for about an hour, and we left more out of physical fatigue than anything else. My son said he'd want to do it again, so that's a testament to the fun and lasting experience. Parking was easy when we went. The staff were friendly. One tip is that ice skates typically run smaller for fit. He wears a toddler 9, that's the smallest size of ice skate too, which ended up being too small, so we went to a toddler 10 that fit. If your child has issues with sizes, I'd say bring an extra pair of sox in case they find sizes too small or too big, but not just right. They don't have 1/2 sizes for kids or adults. As an adult, I went bigger and it was a tad loose, but better than too tight. We went for a closed to the public private event, so I'm not sure what the typical clientele is. We went in the day. So, from that standpoint, I have no idea what a Fri/Sat night would be like, if more for rambunctious teens or chaotic. We went when it was all pretty much 3-10 yr olds and parents, for a very family friendly environment which everyone was respectful and nobody did rude nor stupid or dangerous antics on ice. read more

Came here for public skate. The rentals were awful. Had to give back two pairs because they were not sharp enough to even attempt to skate. The ice at the edges close to the boards are uneven and show a lot of years of wear and tear. The worst part which really bothered me was that public skate is not public. There are A LOT of private coaching going on and figure skaters even trying to preform their routes with music that you have to avoid. Not safe, not fun, super disappointed/ read more

There is something special about this place. Skated here everyday a couple decades ago. I heard it had its ups and downs. Popped in recently just for nostalgia's sake and the positive energy, friendly staff, and incredible management has kept me coming back multiple days a week. I play hockey here a couple nights a week. Its an old stinky barn with a sheet of ice and that's just fine by me. Sure it is not as new and plush and spacious as Toyota Sports Center, but it serves its purpose and the leagues are actually run very well. The locker rooms are kinda dirty and the floors are musty/nasty, but I've played hockey and dressed/undressed in much worse places...so no issues there. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of the old smelly barn-style sheets back East. And that nostalgia is kinda cool. All hockey is good hockey in my book...! read more

We came here for public skate today (Saturday afternoon) and there were so many kids on the ice with coaches that we kept trying to weave in and out of them and even got yelled at by coaches to "move away." Not really sure how this is allowed for public skating and am very discouraged in returning to this location in the future because of our experience. When I went to get my rental skates, the kid was on his cell phone and I stood there waiting and he eventually looks up and me and goes "I already gave them to your friend." I was hoping my friend who is visiting from Europe and I would have had a better experience ice skating, but it was just okay. read more

I started off taking group lessons as an adult skater with there LTS program and months later decided to begin private lessons and off ice training as I fell in LOVe with skating. The rink looks slightly run down, but I think that's just because the building is a little old. Otherwise the ice quality is just fine. But if you're looking for a nice relaxing public session, I'd steer clear of this place on weekdays. Figure skaters run rampant during the much-cheaper public sessions and despite the sign everyone is always running their program so you're constantly dodging them as well. But if you're a figure skater looking for a place to practice, Skating Edge is one of few rinks not completely devoted to hockey, which means the ice isn't scarred with ruts. Plus you won't be put on the back burner just because you have toepicks. read more

The insturctors are great, but the rest of the staff are complete bufoons. The first time I came here for my daughters youth skating lessons there were half empty beer cans in the hockey bench area that were easily accessible to the children skating. When I informed the staff they didn't do anything about it or apologize. Then a few weeks later someone took my daughters skate blade guards. When I approached the desk about it they informed me that it was a mistake, that a woman had told them her daughter lost her pink blade guards and so the desk took ours out of the area where everyone keeps blade guards while skating because ours were pink and gave them to the woman. They said that they would get them back if they saw that other woman again, but have not been able to do so. Promenade Ice Rink in PV is a much better place for your business. read more

My experience ice skating was pleasant. The ice skating ring was ok. My 3 star rating is based on the attitude of one of the guys. He was standing in the corner passing the lockers. As me and my friends were taking off our skates the employee(guy) was making out with a girl like disgusting style... and to top it off cusses is out because we happened to accidentally have seen them. I took my sisters, my daughters & their cousins here for my daughter's birthday, and they had a lot of fun! We weren't able to book a room for her birthday because of the last minute notice, but the manager gave us a $40 discount anyways (yay us)! I would've given this place 5 stars because my kids had so much fun, however there were a couple of things that I didn't like so much that night. First, the ice was a little melted. Usually they smooth over the ice, but that night they didn't, and it just made it a little more dangerous. Second, one of the workers on the ice (older man) kept on bothering my daughter's and nieces, which was a little weird and uncomfortable for them. He took my niece that was sitting on one of the dolphins, and pushed her around on it when she told him not to. He seemed a little weird, so when she told me, I knew to keep an eye out for anything else he would do. read more

I won two Bantam A state championships(95' 96') here as Bay Harbor Red Wing. Vic Venasky is an OG Kings player and I think he still runs the pro shop. The Heindl family has been running the joint since I was a kid and are really nice people. I used to play here when they had the 9 foot high section of boards, "the Wall." We had a couple of gang fights break out during our games when spectators supporting teams from other areas would clash with the crews from Wilmington and Pedro. All in all, a real piece of So Cal hockey history and figure skating history too. (Insider tip) If you get hungry check out Three Brothers on the north end of the parking lot and get a chicken teriyaki bowl after your game. read more

If you love ice skating, this is a great place to take lessons. The cost becomes cheaper than the regular admission ticket. Since buying the 8 classes lesson comes with the free 2 hour open session before or after your lesson with the teacher. In the long run, lesson plan is a better deal. Our daughter tried ice skating for the first time at the rink in PV and liked it. But this place is closer so we came in to get info on prices and hours. Patrons were there with their kids so this place was obviously open and there was one employee on the zamboni but no other employees were to be found any where. The store, the front counter, the food counter and the skate rental counter totally unattended. We asked one of the parents there where were the employees' and she said to wait, that someone would eventually show up. Waited about 10 mins but nothing. We ended up getting the info we wanted from a sign posted on the front door and left. I'll give it two stars only because there were plenty of people there waiting for the zamboni to finish so this place must be doing something right. But the service sucks! read more

Pros, Cons, then Summary Went here for my child's hockey game. PROs--This place is a time warp....it's like walking back into the 1950s-60s. The place is a very old rink, with lots of history. The banners from hockey go back to the 1980s, which is a long time seeing as how most rinks I go to are relatively new. The facilities worked, and at the end of the day, we were just here to play a quick hockey game and leave. Bathrooms and sinks worked fine. I really enjoyed looking at the old pictures and other memorabilia. CONs--Parking is limited. Hard to find a parking. One sheet of ice makes scheduled decent game times difficult. For whatever reason, they had the adults changing in the lobby and not in a locker room. Kinda awkward for them, and I'm sure they'd rather have their own locker room too. No snack bar, rather, they had a snack bar but it is under construction. There is a Thai restaurant right next door, but that was closed too. Would I go back? Yes, but the only reason I'd ever come back is if my child had another game planned here. Otherwise, it's far from where I live. But, I liked it all the same. read more

Old, original SoCal rink. Nothing super fancy. Small concession stand, even smaller pro shop. Parking is small and tight. However, the stands and seating are quite good. The roof is wood, meant for ice, not a converted warehouse or grocery store. You walk in and you know you're in a rink of the old school variety. Locker rooms are small, but with showers. A lot of rinks don't have that. The lockers rooms go right to the benches. Some rinks (Lakewood, Oxnard) you have to hoof it to the bench. This rink is quaint, charming, and good enough for its intended purpose. read more

I came here with my friends on a Saturday night and the place wasn't too crowded. It was my 2nd time ice skating and the staff was very helpful with sizing my shoes and my friends. The rink is pretty big (I feel it's bigger than the Promenade one) and they play good music at a better volume than Promenade. Really want to come back again. read more

This rink has very intense public sessions during the day even during the summer to the point where I can not recommend this rink for public skaters. I'm a basic skills skater meaning I don't need to cling to the boards but there are too many high level figure skaters who don't seem to give a crap. This rink has plenty of open freestyle ice so I'm not sure why it's so terrible. I couldn't practice anything more than stroking because there was a constant barrage of jumps being launched in every direction. Ended up slamming into the boards and injuring my wrist when one skater just stopped on a dime in front of me. The Toyota Sports Center has restrictions on who can skate on public ice which is much better and SAFER. Sad I would have liked this rink to have been my figure skating home but if I can't safely practice then I'll never get any better. I feel sorry for the little kids. Luckily there are plenty of other places to spend your skating dollars. read more

This place is a piece of nostalgia for me personally. I grew up playing hockey here on the B.H. Red Wings and have countless memories. I came back here and was very happy to see multiple improvements and upgrades to the facility...All while maintaining the cherished atmosphere that I remember. The board were improved greatly and the locker rooms weren't...which was the right choice in my book. I was a little disappointed to see that the pro-shop was pretty sparse as far as inventory (ESPECIALLY BAY HARBOR RED WINGS GEAR!) I wanted to buy a jersey for memory sake but there was nothing available in ANY size. :-/ All in all, I WILL ALWAYS LOVE THIS PLACE. I can't help but like this place. Two of my kids play hockey here. It is home the Bay Harbor Red Wings club team. The facility is showing it's age, but the rink and ice are in good shape. Ice is hard to come by in Southern California. It is nice to have a rink in the South Bay. read more
