The good: There's a huge open grassy area at this park so it's good for picnics.. There are also some tree areas for shade. They have public restrooms. They have a basketball court. There's a sidewalk trail that good for kids' scooters or wagons. The area is slightly inclined in certain spots. The bad: My toddler loves playing in the sand here and it gets awfully messy. I don't know what the appropriate shoe wear is because she just gets tons of sand in her sneakers and then tries removing her shoes all the time. There are also fire ants. It's not the most well kept of playgrounds. There are spider webs and a lot of wear and tear and worn down playground materials. The interesting: When I came, there were 4 separate parties going on with tents or picnic blankets setup so this place was popping for families. read more

Great park, Great Location, big open space. Clean, Safe neighborhood. Friendly environment. Volleyball court located right next to playground area, you will need to have your own nets though. Basketball court there, plenty of benches and tables. Great walking trail. Bathroom does need a little work though. No stall doors and never any toilet paper read more

My family are original 1975 owners of a house right down the street from De Portola park and have always had a soft spot in our hearts for the beauty of the open green area. Love the paved path around the park. Many youngsters use the playground and there are often a few people dribbling on the basketball court. In the nearly fifty years we've been here, we have not seen anyone use the sandy area next to the playground for its intended use as a volleyball court. The sand is compacted and full of weed roots, so not surprising. Would seem a good idea if the City made it into something else that might actually be used, such as more picnic tables. This area and the baseball diamond floods during heavy rains. Bathroom remind me of beach bathrooms--no doors on stalls, no toilet paper and always sandy. Not welcoming. Grassy areas are plentiful and mowed often. Pretty to look at but watch out of the numerous gopher holes and tree roots. Treacherous walking would be an understatement. Would give this park five stars if the bathrooms were kept clean, had privacy doors and t.p. and if the gophers were gone/grass areas were maintained without holes/roots that are dangerous causing trip 'n falls. Picnic areas are used often and seem to be enjoyed by small and large groups. Kite flying, drone and radio-controlled aircraft are fun to watch. My parents were the neighbors who requested the park benches be placed around the perimeter. "As elderly people, we would really appreciate a place to sit and rest." I can't imagine how many hundreds of souls have enjoyed those benches (sadly scarce in many parks). Thanks, mom and dad! Trees along the north edge of the park now block the city view for we neighbors nearby (before they grew tall we used to be able to see all the way to the Hollywood sign). We hope the city will someday replace them with bushes to screen the lower Walteria neighborhood for their privacy and stay short enough as to not block the spectacular views those with two story homes or who live in the upper neighborhood, enjoy. Our dogs love to stroll along that area, taking in all the wonderful smells. From the south or top side of the park (Rolling Hills Road), downtown L.A. can be seen on a clear day. The mountains that surround the L.A. basin are spectacular after a snowfall. Picture post card perfect! Some summers the City will set up a big outdoor movie screen and show a family friendly film. Visited here on the whim on a Saturday morning to have our little boys get some fresh air. The park had one full basketball court on the south side. Open field and one baseball field on the north side. 3 separate playgrounds for different age groups. On the west side of the park (lower/down the hill slope pass the restrooms), there were approximately 3 or 4 picnic tables with bbq grills. The two large playgrounds had sand while the small playground which appeared for smaller toddlers had foam ground. Not crowded for a mid-morning on a Saturday. Would come back here for kids to play and bring family. read more

Here's another addition to my collection of reviews of public parks. This one is off the beaten track, in the middle of a quiet residential neighborhood, which probably explains why it's usually so uncrowded & peaceful. It's on Rolling Hills Road between Hawthorne and Crenshaw. Specifically, it's at RH Rd. and Whiffletree Lane, how delightful....haha. There is no parking lot, but the residential streets surrounding the park are empty of cars, so there is a ton of free parking, even shady spots like I got today. I posted 14 pictures to describe the place. It's so grassy & open that there is a sign posted: No Golfing. Ha! I did see a dog running off leash 'cause there was like nobody there today on a Monday. There is a softball field, no hardball allowed. And a basketball court. And a large kids playground. And a picnic area with grills on which to bar-b-q. All shown in the photos. [+1] This park is my most favorite! I've been coming here ever since I was a little kid (7 years old).. skateboarding, scooter, rugby, biking, basketall and the playground... This park has a special place in my heart..[: I will always remember the day I skateboarded down that hill, and almost killed myself and ran over a kid.... ;3 [+1] Beautiful, clean, and private - the grass is well kept, the playground is clean, and the cement is so white.. it's crazy. Not many people come here because it's smack dab in the middle of a private residential area.. not many people know of this gem. [+1] Lots of parking - there's no real parking lot but the neighborhood doesn't have many cars parked on the sidewalk so there is always plenty to go around. [+1] Cool with lots of shade - I come here often to read or muse about things. I am always thinking and this is a thinking spot of mine. I come here to destress and nap when I need one. This place helps me sooo much. [+1] Lots of things to do - there's basketball courts, volleyball, baseball, and the gigantic field to do whatever the heck you want. (; plus there's the playground when you want to feel like a little kid again xD there's even a huuuuuuge downhill slope that you can just go on a wild descent on a bike, skateboard (scary!) or just be stupid and run down, then tumble down the hill xD read more

I threw a Monster Jam birthday party for my little one several years ago here. He had a homemade Gravedigger pinata too, just wanted to add that lol. But any who, it's a great park. It's nice and clean. There's a playground, basketball court, baseball field and lots of grass. The air is always fresh and crisp. read more

This is a cute park with lots of grassy fields for your kids to run in. There are full court basketball courts. On Saturday morning people with drones come out and do a drone obstacle course. My son likes to play on the old, outdated equipment after his Sing In Chinese class. He enjoys running up and down the little, grassy knolls. There is ample free parking in the nice neighborhood surrounding the park. This is NOT a park to drive 20 minutes for. This is a nice park if you are in the area and want your child to burn off steam. It also seems like a good park to bring your dog and have a picnic. read more

I love frequenting this park to let our dog roam its grassy hills. Our dog is fearful of many things (former rescue) and can become aggressive if frightened, so this place is perfect for her because no matter if there is a baseball or soccer game going on with lots of people around, there is still plenty of room and shade for her to be able to get some fresh air and do her sniff patrol thing away from all others. The park is always very clean and well taken care of, and there is no shortage of parking around the perimeter. Plenty of trash cans available to drop your poopie bags into also. Don't forget your water bottle to wash down doggie pee so the grass can stay as green as it always is! There's a concrete path throughout the park that casual bicyclists use, a basketball court, and a couple tables and bbq's available. There are 'hot coal' concrete disposal bins available near the bbq's. Great local park to enjoy a sunny afternoon. read more

This park is great because of its location, it's nestled in a residential area, but very close to grocery stores and a few restaurants. It's a great open space, that I includes a small baseball field, playground, and a couple of basketball hoops! This area and also moving South or West, you I'll find great open parks like these, each special in there on ways! Usually a nice way to be with nature because of all of the trees and fresh air. Definitely, a great way to spend a weekend with the family and little ones, a great way to staying active! read more

I forgot how great this park was until I read this yelp review by a fellow mom. I use to bring the kiddos to this park to meet other moms or have picnic on the wooden table with benches. The most outstanding feature in this park is the omnipresent crows or black birds, they seem to love hang around here. The kids would chase the audacious black birds away, so our chips and sandwiches would stay intact under the attack. The restroom could use some work. read more

This park is so nice! Tucked away in a friendly residential neighborhood a few blocks off Crenshaw, Plenty of grass, play equipment for the kids, a few sports fields (baseball/basketball), and lots of trees. It is well kept and is a nice place to relax with a blanket and a book. read more

Beautiful park in the Rolling Hills area. Park is very clean and playground equipment is well maintained. The main parking is street parking but it's usually not a problem to find since most of the neighborhoods near the park are quiet residential ones. It's a good place for birthday parties, picnics, etc. They also do have a restroom but not sure how clean it is (I didn't use it). Overall though a nice park for kids to play or just to have a quiet picnic. read more

I come here for the basketball courts. It isn't as crowded as it use to be which is nice because that means more basketball time!! Other than that this safe and friendly park is great to bring your friends, kids, and pets to for all forms of exercise fun! read more

My favorite park to go to and the place that all us South Bay Asian kids come to play basketball in our six feet and under league lol. I love this place because it is usually never packed, plenty of parking on the streets, and it is kept in great condition. There is a baseball field, one basketball court, a bathroom, a sandpit, and a path for those who like to exercise. I don't really use any of the other facilities here, but the basketball court is in good condition, double-rimmed, and usually has unbroken nets (guess we play too much that it sometimes breaks and takes about three weeks to replace). Sometimes water from the sprinklers or rain gathers near the sides of the court but it is not that big of a deal and usually dries up by the afternoon. We have never had problems securing a court to play ball in on Sundays and most of the time when I drive past only one side of the court is being used at any given time. Other pluses about this place are that it is semi-private as it hidden from most people so that very few people know about it and will come here to enjoy the park. It is located within walking distance of a Ralph's and its shopping center in case you need to pick up some extra drinks or grab a lunch in the plaza. Moreover, every Sunday families come gather here for some type of party or so - setting up tables, balloons, chairs and what not - so come here early if you want a particular spot even though there is a lot of open space for everyone to enjoy. read more

Nice and quiet park with a lot of open space for a lot of different sports. We usually come here to shoot some hoops whenever we have free time. There's also a jungle gym swing set for the kids and a restroom nearby. But, it is all street parking in a residential area. read more

This is a great park off of Rolling Hills Road - halfway between Hawthorne and Crenshaw. There is TONS of open space (lots of lawn) for activities. There are even poles for a volleyball net. There are lots of dogs in the park, but they are kept under control by their owners. There are not tons of trees, but there are a few that provide a decent amount of shade. There are also a few picnic benches as well as a BBQ. The play equipment is in pretty good shape, and there is quite a bit of it. I particularly like that the bathrooms are near the play area. Friendly parents and children too. Highly recommend it. read more

De Portola Park is quite close to where I live! I used to take my kids all the time when they were young and they always loved it! De Portola today is as beautiful as it was 22 years ago and I still go there to take walks at times! It is especially always so clean love that park! read more
