I had lunch alone today. I was out working and decided to get a quick bite at a local joint where I feel comfortable. I am trying slowly to get used to eating alone. The Smokehouse, I feel safe and comfortable even though on the West Side. I parked in the free lot in the rear. Grabbed a stool at the counter and greeted Mike (the owner) ordered a Hot Dog with chili, slaw and onions. Small order of French fries, they have the good thick ones served with cold ketchup...delicious!! And a nice frosty mug for my cold can of RC Cola.. Definitely recommend exactly what I ordered!!! The service was terrible. While i was using the restroom I could hear the man working the bar communicating with other customers about me in the restroom because I was in there a little long. My stomach was up set. They automatically assumed I was a drug user. Which I am not! I felt completely humiliated walking out of the restroom! read more

Not a pleasant experience, owner Mike was very grumpy not welcoming. The girl at the bar was not interested in refilling my drink or asking if I needed anything more, the gentleman beside me was very well taken care of full attention. Finally got the attention of an older lady to refill my drink and bring my my check, but wasn't made aware of a convenience fee added if using cards to pay. ( i think they were all family from their conversations) Maybe there was signage but again I didn't see it. Food was bland, read reviews before going here and had high expectations. Also, watching local news it appears this area is getting dangerous like the wild wild west. I will choose to spend my money elsewhere for a better meal and better service and atmosphere. Casual, low key and low budget, but great food. Something for everyone from pasta to burgers to dessert. Good old fashion comfort/diner food on the West Side that's good quality and great service. Food comes out fast and fresh. There's ample parking out back too with a rear entrance. They do close early, and you can't order food after 6:45pm. read more

We didn't eat here today but I feel like this establishment deserves 5 stars. After traveling all morning through the mountains on route 79 and having no access to Yelp, we took a chance with the GPS and stopped here for lunch looking for BBQ. An older gentleman welcomed us. My husband is gluten-free and the gentleman went over the menu with us. There was only one offering on the menu for hubby. The gentleman graciously pointed us in the direction of a local BBQ joint complete with awesome directions. So thank you Mike for your hospitality and when I told them that you sent us, our waitress said that your food is very good and that she loves it there! BTW, your recommendation was spot on. I was over at Piles about 3 pm on a Saturday and decided to give this place a try, as I've driven by it a thousand times, and I generally prefer local restaurants to chains. Me and my son ordered a couple of burgers and some onion rings. The food was ok, nothing to write home about, but it was reasonably priced. I think our two burgers plus a side of onion rings and a bag of Doritos came to about $15. So not a bad value; cheaper than 5 Guys anyway. The reason it gets two stars in my book is the atmosphere. It feels more like a dive bar than a restaurant. Not in a charming way either. Plus, in spite of the fact that my 6 year old was sitting at the counter like a foot from him, one worker insisted on cursing with every other word. This place has been around for a while, so it must have its fans. And I'm willing to admit that it could have been my fault for not doing my research first and bringing my kid to a place not intended for little ones. It's definitely not a family place though. This place might be for you if: (1) you are looking for a neighborhood spot where everybody knows your name (2) so you won't have to drink alone in the middle of the afternoon (3) and you do NOT have children with you. All others should steer clear. The place has its own personality for sure. It's just that it's a depressing, foul-mouthed personality. I've never regretted passing up a chain for a mom and pop restaurant before, but at least I know the workers at Qdoba or 5 Guys won't be shouting curse words in the presence of my children. read more
