I appreciate that they have a simple menu with both standard and more exotic options! Super Weenie was the first thing that we saw so we decided to stop by We walked in and we're greeted by the friendliest people who were very patient with us deciding what we want. What a great spot in downtown Charleston! The gentlemen behind the counter were extremely friendly and helpful in reviewing the menu and making suggestions. They have a huge variety of topping and plenty of "pre built" dogs if you don't want to come up with your own. I especially love and appreciate the variety of crunchy toppings. Those take a hot dog to the next level. I had looked at the menu online so I knew what I wanted when I arrived. I just couldn't resist the "Dumpster Fire." Two hot dogs and buns served open face with chili, cheese, ranch, red onion sauce, fritos, and french fried onions (I think that was everything. I chose not to get the hot peppers and diced onions on mine). Indulgent, yes, and also delicious. Everything worked together and each bite was balanced with all the toppings. We walking downtown on our way to a different restaurant, however Super Weenie caught our eye - it looked like such a cute little place that we decided to stop in here instead! This is very much a grab and go type of place - there is not seating inside or outside so just be aware of that. The guy working the counter was very friendly! The prices here are also pretty inexpensive. As for the hot dogs - delish!! I got the chili cheese bacon beast, which was topped with everything mentioned in the name, including fried onion strips. (Note: this is a review I wrote in October 2022 and realized I forgot to publish) The Chicago (my "go to" when trying a new place) was good. The portions of the toppings was perfect, which I'm a stickler for. If the portions are off, too much or too little of any, and it won't be right. I would have liked a poppy seed bun, or poppy seeds sprinkled on top, but since they are usually only used for a Chicago dog, I'm understanding of them not being available. My only issue with the Chicago (which is a me thing not a Super Weenie issue) was that it didn't travel well. Honestly, I probably should have eaten it when I got back to the car. The weenie itself lost a good amount of heat in the time it took for me to get from the shop to the hotel, which is bound to happen with that many cold toppings added. Overall I enjoyed it. Something else I do when I travel, aside from getting a Chicago, is that I will always try the food item that has the business' name in it. In this case, the Super Weenie. This one had a grouping of flavors that I wasn't accustomed to together and I wasn't familiar with curry mustard. It took me a couple of bites to really register a thought on this one, one way or the other. After the 3rd bite or so, I realized that I had a strange feeling like I was around family or a happy, comforting place. It then hit me, the only time I have crispy onions is at Thanksgiving and Christmas gathering, so this hotdog brought up feelings of being around friends and family and made me connect more with the flavor profiles in a positive way. It took me a couple of bites to get there, but I ended up truly enjoying this one as it gave a "sitting around the table laughing and smiling" feeling. Then there was the PBJ...WTF. I ordered this one solely for the novelty of it. I had made PBJ (grape jelly) hotdogs before at home and they didn't quite come out right (portion control), but for a restaurant to have this on the regular menu, I knew I had to try it. As I stood in line yesterday, I heard another order or 2 for it so this only reinforced my mindset of trying it. There's no way that peanut butter, sriracha and hot pepper jelly was going to work well. I'm sitting in the hotel room and open the foil wrapper after having the Chicago. My friends are standing around me and ask which hotdog this one is. I said "the one with peanut butter and hot sauce", they cringed, I took a bite. I didn't want to like this one, again, there's no reason why this pairing of ingredients should work, but damn if it wasn't my favorite of the three. If the shop was open later in the day or sometime today, you would have seen me in line again specifically to order the PBJ again and probably another 1 or 2 that I hadn't tried in the first stop! It was oddly sweet (which I did not expect) and spicy and the bacon and peanut butter gave it this really pleasant creamy/ savory contrast. The PBJ... WTF, on paper is not supposed to work. It's not supposed to be good, but it is a home run, it is a fantastic hotdog. I enjoyed meeting and talking to the both of you and it seems you have a great shop. I appreciated how friendly and approachable you both were. As I mentioned earlier, portion control is a make or break for me, and all 3 of my dogs were made right. I have been to a lot of places that either don't put enough on the dog and you're left wanting or they slap too much of the topping on it and completely ruin the dish. Yours were made with that attention to detail which is key. This was my first ever trip to Charleston and first time to WV in 20 years. These were great hotdogs and if we happen to come back through Charleston, you will absolutely see me again. read more
