The good . The location of the hotel is really great. It's a quick 10-15 min walk to the waterfront as well as gaslamp quarter too and there is a Starbucks for pickup directly on the floor of the lobby as you exit. The staff are really nice and they offer flavored water and candies 24/7. There are filtered water machines on some floors as well as ice machines. There is a microwave and fridge and coffee maker in the room as well as all the necessities for toiletries including facial makeup remover clothes and towels. The room I was in could've been dusted more but I was able to check in early so maybe it was cleaned a while before. The not so good. Though the hotel is a bit dated and the rooms are small the service of the staff makes up for it in many ways. My tv was not working and they quickly sent someone up to fix it.

On my husband's 40th birthday, we went to San Diego for a weekend getaway. We decided to stay at the Sofia Hotel, a charming boutique hotel and iconic landmark in downtown San Diego. The building is almost 100 years old and a fun fact is that it was the first hotel in San Diego (originally opened as The Pickwick Terminal Hotel) to include bathrooms inside the rooms, which was considered very rare at the time. Our room was the corner suite on the top floor, it was just recently remodeled, so we had the opportunity to try it out for the first time. The view was beautiful, and the room featured cool modern tech touches, including touch-screen controls for every lamp. They were a little confusing at first, but I got used to them quickly. The mattress was very comfortable, just peeerfect for a good night sleep, especially because we were traveling from Miami and were a little jetlagged. Overall, the space was beautifully designed, blending contemporary style with warm, comfortable finishes that made it feel both modern and inviting. I loved the details outside the door: the hotel logo lit up in different colors to show the room's status, for example, it turned green when you requested cleaning. But the hotel experience was more than just the rooms. Saturdays and Sundays at 9 a.m., there's a free walking tour through the Gaslamp Quarter, and we were lucky enough to join one. It was a wonderful way to discover hidden details and stories about the city, the kind only a seasoned guide like Pamela can bring to life. It's an experience you truly must try for yourself. On the other hand, if you're in for adventures, the hotel also offers complimentary bikes so you can go off on your own and cruise through other city gems like the legendary Balboa Park. Our stay at the Sofia Hotel was incredibly refreshing, but what made it truly special was the service and how it made us feel truly cared for. Thank you Andrea, Paulina, Mariana, Alexandra, Mia, Scott, Ian and John, FOR EVERYTHING, you truly made our stay unforgettable! Thanks to you, we know why San Diego IS the finest in the US. We hope that we can return very soon!

It's all in the cheerful details! Sofia knows how to throw a party!

I've always heard that San Diego is a state of mind , shaped by its dynamic topography, breezy warm weather , and friendly locals. That's why it was always on my bucket list, and I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate my birthday than by finally experiencing this city's charm. We chose to stay at an iconic landmark: The Sofia Hotel . Originally opened as the Pickwick Terminal Hotel, it made history as one of the first hotels with private bathrooms (a rare luxury at the time). Inspired by Gothic Revival architecture, its New York-style façade still stands out in the heart of downtown. Back in the day, it was home to The Piccadilly Lounge, a lively gathering place for travelers. That spirit of hospitality is still alive today. From the moment we arrived, the Sofia's character shone through, from the welcoming statue guiding you to the entrance to Scott's warm and efficient check-in . Each floor showcases the hotel's rich story through lighted scripted boxes, and then suddenly you're swept into modern comfort with beautifully upgraded rooms. Thoughtful details like customizable lighting , plush bedding , and freshly remodeled VIP Suites make it feel like your own apartment. Housekeeping also did a pristine job, keeping everything spotless and sharp throughout our stay. Add in the Nespresso machine (with decaf capsules too! ), and you're instantly woken up into the San Diego mood. And to top it all off, I was surprised with a special warm welcome: my room was cheerfully decorated to celebrate my birthday , making the experience even more unforgettable. The amenities go beyond the room. Guests can enjoy a private namaste yoga studio with on-demand classes, a well-equipped fitness center to balance out all the delicious treats along the way, and business rooms with reliable high-speed Wi-Fi --perfect for travelers mixing work and leisure. Sweet touches make every stay memorable: complimentary treats at the front desk (my wife couldn't resist the Jolly Ranchers ), refreshing drinks like hibiscus tea and horchata , plus hydration stations with purified water on every floor . To dive deeper into San Diego's culture, the hotel offers free walking tours of the Gaslamp Quarter with Pamela, a true local who shares fascinating stories you won't find in any guidebook . For exploring on your own, complimentary bikes make it easy to cruise through the city's gems, like the Spanish-Mexican-inspired Balboa Park . But what truly makes the Sofia Hotel unforgettable is its team . Paulina, Mariana, Alexandra, Mia, Scott, Ian, and John (the general manager himself), you embody the finest spirit of the finest city in the U.S., with warmth, energy, and genuine care. Gracias, obrigado, grazie, danke ... however I say it, we are deeply thankful. You made my transition into my 4th level of life the smoothest and most joyful way possible. The Sofia Hotel isn't just a place to stay, it's part of San Diego's history, personality, and soul . Celebrating my birthday here was the perfect way to recharge and step into this new stage of life and state of mind, fully loaded with the best vibes: work smart, laugh hard, rest easy.. the best motto Sofia taught me during our stay... ;)

My stay at The Sofia Hotel has come with mixed thoughts. And because of the lack of response from management, I'm going through with this review until and unless someone actually responds to me. I checked in during Comic Con week on Wednesday. I arrived around 11am but I was given a room right away which was awesome. Taylor checked me in and although she was super friendly and sweet, she was also a bit clueless on basic amenities and options from the hotel. This is 100% on the training or management. I asked about wi-fi, she said she didn't know how guests connect. I noticed a comic con shuttle guide, she said she didn't even know there was a shuttle. Why isn't management informing the front desk about these things, especially during the time when San Diego sees the most traffic every year? And just to add onto that - later on I was returning to my room and asked another gentleman at the front desk a few things, and he stared at me as if I was speaking another language. He pointed to the other front desk attendant and said "he can help you". So why are you sitting at the front desk? When I first arrived to my room on the fourth floor, things seemed decent. Until I noticed all the surfaces had a heavy layer of dust that hasn't been touched in weeks. When I hopped in the shower, there was hair all over the bottles and on the walls. This made me start digging some more and I found the bed full of hairs and stains and dirt. The curtains were also absolutely filthy and the fridge wasn't keeping anything cold. I immediately went to complain and yet another gentleman working was kind enough to move me to a renovated room on the 7th floor right away. I was shocked that rooms were available given the event but happy to be moved so fast. This room was definitely new. Clean, brighter, vibrant, and comfortable. The shower was a bit weak but the fridge actually worked and everything else was great. HOWEVER - every time I left and returned to my room, there was a new problem. For 3 days a cleaning cart was left right outside my room door. The elevators constantly had trash kept around them and on top of the trash can - never to be cleaned. I asked at least 4 different front desk attendants at various times for the manager's contact but I was always given an excuse. I sent an email upon my return which was 5 days ago and I still haven't heard back.

    Bury me in roses drink

The hotel staff are very professional and friendly. Love the bar and restaurant. The bartenders are very skilled and loved each drink! A must visit

    Broken ac

Do not stay here. They haven't cleaned since the 1950s. Doo doo stains on the pull out bed, broken AC, broken light, staff are assholes ( ally specifically) . We moved rooms 3 times and each room just got worse each time. 0/10 would not recommend.

    Pull out bed

To say the least this is absolutely the dirtiest hotel I have stayed in. The customer service here is beyond terrible, most of everybody at the front desk are stuck up and disrespectful. We have had 3 separate rooms all with different problems and these are some of the pictures that we took. I would not recommend ANYBODY to stay here, please save your money and book elsewhere.

My husband and I stayed here a couple of weeks before our wedding for one last date night before the big day. It was a very beautiful hotel very good price right in a great location in downtown San Diego.

    Welcome gift!

We absolutely loved our stay at The Sofia Hotel. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcomed and genuinely cared for. The hotel itself blends historic charm with modern comfort--beautiful touches in the lobby, thoughtfully designed rooms, and an overall inviting atmosphere that makes it feel like a retreat rather than just a place to sleep. Our room was spotless, comfortable, and quiet given the downtown location. We appreciated the little details, like the quality linens, great water pressure in the shower, and the cozy ambiance. The location could not be better--steps away from amazing restaurants, the Gaslamp Quarter, and an easy walk to the waterfront. It made exploring the city effortless. What really stood out was the service. Every interaction felt warm and personal, as if the team truly values each guest. We left feeling rested, taken care of, and excited to return. This is now our go-to hotel in San Diego. Highly recommend!

How big are the rooms? Do they have suites?

They have suites consisting of a bedroom and living room in an "open floor plan" similar to a studio apartment. I stayed in one recently and it was very comfortable. I'd highly recommend one of the suites for your visit.

I am so happy I found this place via AARP! Located in the heart of the Gaslamp District, I had never heard of this hotel prior to searching. Upon checking in, the desk clerk was very friendly, efficient, and answered any questions that I had. As for the room, he put us up on the top (4th) floor. Room is the perfect size for two people. Very clean, warm, inviting, and has some really cute and convenient amenities such as a pineapple themed USB quad port at the desk, along with a Keurig machine (had I known that I'd have brought my own Starbucks K-cups)! The bed was nice and comfy with lots of soft but supportive pillows and two separate comforter blankets so you're not fighting for covers if you are sharing the bed with someone or your significant other. Bathroom is very modern and clean. A hairdryer is hanging in the bathroom as well. The only item missing was an iron and an ironing board; however, you can request that at the front desk. If you are looking for a hotel with a gym, laundry facilities on site, and a full breakfast buffet or continental breakfast, then this place is not for you; however, if those things don't matter to you {I typically look for those types of hotels during a longer stay) then this hotel is all you need. You also get other unexpected creature comforts such as Starbucks coffee in the lounge along with 4 different blends of water as well as these cute pineapple cookies in the afternoon. Based in Seattle, WA, I am so happy I found this chain as I will be on the lookout and consider staying in other cities. Parking is available in a garage connected to the hotel next door for a fee. Also, bikes are available in the lobby for getting around (not sure if gratis or for a fee). I definitely recommend staying here! One small recommendation for the hotel: provide rooms with a small microwave and mini fridge to reheat leftovers. It all worked out as I gave a homeless guy mine.

I get that some reviewers might expect more amenities, but this is Downtown San Diego. The design and structure fit perfectly with the surroundings, and I personally appreciate a place that keeps the riff-raff at bay. Once we checked into our room, I found the space thoughtfully designed, and the staff promptly addressed the minor issues we encountered. Though the hotel doesn't boast a massive pool, located on the 3rd floor, the staff provided excellent food and beverage service. The gym, overlooking the pool, was well-equipped for a proper workout, and I was pleased to find that the equipment was in good condition and saw little use.
