Quaint little CD/movie/record store. I'm out in Fells pretty frequently and actually have never stopped in here. Some friends took me in here and it's just the coolest shop! First thing that impressed me was their selection of movies at a great price. They had The Force Awakens Blu-Ray for $10, like how do you beat that?? They have walls and walls of movies (old and new) and they're all organized in alphabetical order so if you're looking for a particular movie it's pretty easy to find where it would be if they have it (which I would be surprised if they didn't) They also have an array of TV shows. They have photos lining all the walls of artists and groups who have visited so that was pretty cool to look at. Lots of gag gift type items and quirky gifts to look at at the front of the store as well. Definitely a fun store to go in and walk around and awesome prices! read more

Sound Garden isn't the best record store I've ever been to, by far. However, it *is* the best record store in Baltimore, which is why I'm giving it four stars. Good selection of CD's, DVD's, and new vinyl, but a not-so-great amount of used vinyl. Also, the used vinyl prices are a bit steep, but I suppose with nowhere else in the area to go for used vinyl, they can get away with overcharging you a bit. If you want friendly, talkative, personable staff then SG is not your place. I'm fairly certain there isn't a single SG employee that possesses a personality. But hey, at least they're not dicks, so that's good. read more

Pretty neat place in Fells Point. First off, pretty exciting to me that they have their own parking. I mean what? Where does that even happen down in the Point. Everything that you can think of is here regarding entertainment. Kinda reminds me of a time warp, I mean cds, records, I even saw old season of Martin (YES!!!) This place is crap. I went for a record signing today where there was no indication or clear instructions that it had to be purchased in advanced online but whatever. Then when I get to the front your male employee tells me I can enter but not get anything signed. I then see that the artist is signing random stuff for other people but apparently I can't do that. Then as I'm leaving I see two people who were behind me in the line buying the album in person. When I talk to your employees behind the counter they tell me there are none left and that the girl who was directly behind me in line to enter had purchased the last one. The same male employee tells me that this girl was purchasing something else in the store not the album. This is not true - I saw her purchase the album and get in line to have it signed. I have shopped here before but will never again. You don't know how to treat customers. You repeatedly lied to me. Why have a line to enter the store when you are just going to sell albums as you find them to whoever happens to be talking to you at that moment? It is so unfair and ridiculous. read more

I think I might be older than I realize. Yes, downloading music off the Internet has become the new medium for obtaining music, but not all that is revolutionary is truly great. When going to record stores, I love the feeling of walking into a place with a wall of album covers and posters of Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison staring right at me as music by the Replacements blasts over the loudspekaer and I see others who share the same passion I do. I just never feel that way when downloading. That is the feeling I get when I go to stores like The Sound Garden in Fells Point. True, I've only been here once and it was last summer when I visited my old stomping grounds, but it was a wonderful reminder of how great independent record stores are. And to see such a place in Maryland makes me wish that I patronized this place more often when I lived out here. I bought Fun House by the Stooges and Veni Vidi Vicious by the Hives and they both came out to be less than 20 dollars. Quite amazing when you consider that I usually pay about 25 for two CD's. The Sound Garden is an excellent store and the reason why you should support your local record stores. read more

I mean, there's not much more to say than a top 10 record store experience in the US.

I like Soundgarden. Sort of reminds me a bit of the original Plan9 records in Richmond; However, Sound Garden doesn't carry even selective used vinyl (which is a tiny bummer). The collection of reissued vinyl is extremely good, and the prices are comparable if not better to buying the same stuff online (and not paying shipping). The CD collection is pretty eclectic - they have a ton of stuff, including hard to find doom metal and modern electronic (not techno) stuff. I've found some reasonably priced gems in their piles of used CD's too. Also, can't speak highly enough of how uber-organized Sound Garden is! The staff is pretty knowledgeable too. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! read more

I am standing in line with a cup of gelato from pitango in my hand, and I am idly watching a small girl, probably around 5-6, look at a little wayne cd. she is looking at the cd cover, and as I lick melting gelato off of my hand, I think to myself, "man, where the hell is this girl's dad? She should not be looking at rap CD cases for at least another 6-7 years" and then I look up and he is looking at me, looking at his daughter, licking gelato off of my hand in what can only be described as a sensual manner. This is partially not my fault, as the gelato is quite sensual, but then again, it partially is my fault that I am also buying a CD with fresh, lovely teenage tits on it barely censored by a modicum of good taste. I am trying to buy a movie but I have one of those moments where your brain deactivates and you can't even remember your gender without looking at your government issued i.d. The employee I am talking to is eating indian food out of a chipotle bag, with fritos on top - I am blown away by this combination, and, after vaguely describing the film to him and watching him nod in as sagelike a manner as one can with chana masala dripping down one's chin, I follow him over to a rack of dvds where he simply pulls out the movie I was thinking about and hands it to me. (It was the secret life of arriety). I have the sudden urge to listen to some new japanese hardcore, Boris and Envy not cutting it in the car and instead of lazily downloading an album off a mexican blogspot, I find myself walking across sunburnt cobblestone to the Sound Garden, the only music store worth stepping into when the music stops. read more

I was here last weekend and this place was BUSY! This was one of the last places I stopped at on my trip into Fells Point, and by then I was getting pretty tired. I checked my previous purchases at the front counter (I did have to wait to catch the cashier's eye, no biggie). After that, I started looking around - ok, I turned around from the front counter and came face-to-face with the kids section. Ok, for fun, let's look. First picked up Thundercats, thought it would be a nice nostalgia trip....then I saw.... 0.0....0.0 OMG IS THAT THE ENTIRE G1 TRANSFORMERS DVD COLLECTION?! ....OMG, IS THAT THE ENTIRE TRANSFORMERS BEAST WARS COLLECTION?! ...OMG IS THAT TRANSFORMERS: HEADMASTERS?! (Yes, I'm an 80's child, yes, I love Transformers, and yes, I am a girl. :) Thundercats was instantly dropped back onto the shelf. I am SO glad I hadn't used my visa gift card yet! I raced back to the back of the store to quickly peruse the games, didn't see any I wanted, then raced back to the front counter with my precious - I mean uh..DVDs. :) The wait was short, and I had to explain to the lady behind the counter that two of the three sets were going on a gift card, but it all worked out. I happily picked up my checked bag, and walked out, loaded down with stuff by then. Overall, while I wasn't there long, I was pleased by the selection of DVDS. (They have to refill a huge hole on that shelf now. :) I didn't get a good look at the CD section, but from what I saw, they have a lot to offer. I'm probably going back into town for the book festival, so I'm sure I'll be back to visit! read more

Support local music stores! As a former employee of Record and Tape Traders, I'm so happy an independent music store still exists in Baltimore. It's like walking into a time warp of awesome memories. I love how they have the vinyl section, the used DVDs and CDs, and the random memorabilia scattered throughout. You'll find exactly what you're looking for, what you didn't mean to look for, and things you never thought you would see again. A blessing and a curse. This place is wonderful for new music suggestions, used cd/dvd selection, off the wall or hard to find goodies. The staff is courteous and knowledgeable. If you find a new CD and they have it used, they will ask if you want to save a couple a bucks! Right on! I can't leave here without spending at least $60-$250 though, even I came the week before so I try not to go very often. Or only carry cash and leave my wallet at home! Hard to find parking, just on the street of Fells Point which is always full of cars if not people. Handy listening stations let you listen to just about anything before you buy it. I really stopped buying music in stores around the time iTunes came into my life, but this place has always had exactly what I was looking for, and some stuff I didn't know I wanted. The staff is very reserved, but always knowledgeable. It's next to one of the oldest bars in America, The Horse You Came In On Saloon, so that's a big bonus. This is one of our small gems. I'm not a hipster, music junkie, vinyl head, free spirit or gaming fiend. But if I were, this would be my dream shop. I bring people here and watch their reactions. It's like the 90's never died. I love Sound Garden. - used documentary section - sizable movie selection - offbeat TV show selection - awesome book collection (420 Baking, Holes, Jane Austen, Go the Fok to Sleep...) - posters (aaah!! I need more walls.) - socks (like a wall of odd socks. Why? Why not!) - T-Shirts - snacks - incense/collectibles/hats/toys/headphones And: - music galore Of course the vinyl and CD collections are the reason 80% of the customers come in. They have almost every band that has ever existed somewhere in their files, and - get this - they will order whatever you want. Beat that. It can be a nightmare - you come in for that Lana Del Ray CD and wnd up buying some Foo Fighters, Animal Collective, Mott the Hopple and a movie and Air Heads and a cool sticker and a Sriacha water bottle. And look up from their stacks of music! Sound Garden has pictures on the walls of famous people/bands that have come into the store, including the cast of The Wire. Oh and of course, they have The Wire to buy there. Serveral seasons and if they don't, they'll get it for you. Chill staff knows you need your fix of whatever may be that fix. Take a trip back in time to a place that sells actual records and CD's, DVDs, and general "stuff." You will get lost in stacks of thousands of albums. It's been named Baltimore's Best Independent Record Store numerous times (I believe at this point 13 years counting). You can find old stuff that will take you back, no matter when "back" was. Items are both new and used, and very reasonably priced. The Sound Garden hosts tons of meet-and-greets, intimate shows, and boasts an extensive wall of photos of past visitors (Motorhead! G-Unit! Robin Thicke!) Shopping around is a fun way to kill time and get nostalgic. The store is located right next to the waterfront in Fells Point, near tons of great restaurants and shops. I love local places and this place is as local as you can get and has been around forever. I love how in recent months they have a whole vinyl section with turntables that you can actually hook up with your current sound systems. I also like how their online presence remains up to date with a New Releases section that is oh so helpful. The staff is great and I always leave there with more and better music than I intend to! I've been shopping at SG for years. They sell a lot of used and new records, cds, dvds and more. I love their flexible hours of operation. I also love that they have their own small parking lot. It can be full sometimes, but it's something. Prices are pretty fair. The new vinyl I find to be usually priced better than other shops..They've got a pretty wide selection of genres too. Usually when I pop in there's some introvert working the record counter eating some disgustingly smelly food. Why don't they hire someone who's actually outgoing? I don't need to be said hi to, but a head nod would at least tell me you care I'm about to drop money at the business you work for. I also wish they had a restroom for customers. Overall I like SG...I've picked up some pretty neat stuff here over the years. read more

I love Sound Garden. A place of zen. Vinyls, CDs, books, movies, socks and snacks. The ambiance, laid back and relaxed. It's located in the heart of Fells Point, across the street from Bond Street Social. They have a little parking lot in the back strictly for those shopping at their establishment, awesome because parking can be a pain especially trying to maneuver around the chicks walking in heels on cobblestone, not cute lol. Upon entry, you just see greatness ahead. To the left, you can enter a room that provides all things vinyls. You can even buy a player here!! Back to the main room new and used CDs, broken out by genre. Movies. Books. Socks. Older albums and singles are available and on sale for $1 at times. That's crazy and awesome. You can find some jewels in there. Movie series. I mean the list goes on..don't see something ask one of the awesome employees that work there. All very friendly and helpful. It's a good time. Just go. Ask questions later. It's music. What could possibly go wrong. read more

Simply put ... If you love music you will love this place. I lived in Fells for five years and a weekly ritual was to go to Soundarden to discover new music and the store truly introduced me to many of the bands I love today. You can listen to ANY CD they sell at one of their listening stations. Only downside to a non city dweller is that the service isn't very friendly and you feel like you are being watched because the staff is so over sensitive from the many thieves that attempt to steal. This is one of the last of a dying breed and should be cherished. A great local business to put money into. read more

I'm not that old. but I'm old enough to remember being a teenager, going to the local Record Store and spending hours just thumbing through the racks to see what they had. What album in my musical discovery was I missing? What hard to find import with 5 songs you already had, but 1 song you just HAD to have? The Sound Garden completely fills that void. Add in their amazing selections of Videos for sale, and this is the place to go! I'm very proud to say that my teenage daughter now considers this her favorite store. I was itching for the new release of Frozen.. weeks before it hit the shelves. I called up Sound Garden the day before release and they have blu-ray and regular dvd on sale already in their store! They even held a copy in the back for me... so, I may have paid a little over market value for it, but my inner nerd was happy and that's all that really mattered at the time. Sound Garden is also known for having TV series seasons (used/new) on sale for a relatively lower price than in the regular electronic stores like Best Buy. Like everyone else, it's hard for me to leave Sound Garden without spending more money than I would've liked. Not because it's expensive but because it's cheap and there's so much variety! The main thing I go there for are used dvd's ($5.99-$9.99) but they also have new movies, video games, a ton of new/used cd's and also a small room dedicated to new records! They always have cool, eclectic music playing and the staff is always willing to help. It's a great enviornment and fun way to spend an afternoon (or evening because they are open until 10). There's not too much new to say about Sound Garden that hasn't been said in the previous 108 reviews of the place. Since pretty much all of the Record and Tape Traders closed in the area, Sound Garden is one of the last standing music stores with a huge selection new and used CDs and movies. If you look through the used CDs you'll definitely find your entire collection from the 90's lol. They've had a room dedicated to new vinyl for a while, but within the last couple months they've started buying and selling used vinyl (it's located next to the registers, not in the room with the other records.) It's not a large selection, but it's diverse and we've bought some clean copies of good albums for reasonable prices. If you have vinyl to sell, call to find out when the guy that does their buying is in. He's selective, but pays the best rate out of anywhere else the spouse has gone. Cashing in for store credit is always the better deal. read more

Absolutely hand's down the best record store I've ever been to. They have a phenomenal selection and their prices cannot be beat. If you were to go in today for example to pick up the new Beirut album that came out this week, you'll find the cd version of it on sale for $9.99. In about three weeks probably, it'll go up to the normal price of probably $12.99. You just can't beat that. They have an extensive used collection as well, of both movies and music, and the staff on the whole are very friendly. If I lived in DC, I would make a monthly drive to Soundgarden rather than pay the outrageous prices at places like Melody Records in Dupont Circle, it's THAT good of a record shop! read more

The best place to waste a good afternoon. Great prices, especially on used items. I can't tell you how glad I am that they acquired the parking lot next to the building so that customers can avoid driving aimlessly around Fell's on a Friday or Saturday night looking for parking. My one and ONLY complaint is that the music playing inside the store is not always conducive to the music-browsing experience. Store has a parking lot which is a big bonus. But problem is I called ahead on several occasions to see if they bought CDs. Which they do, but they made no mention of being particular. Fair enough, but it took 2 hours out of my weekend to have them select 10-15 CDs out of the 50 or so I brought. And offer 30. Also in spec with what they offered, but a complete waste of time if you have to drive here from more than 10 min away. Donate them locally you'll get more for your tax write off. For purchasing stuff inside store is nice enough, but I didn't buy anything. read more

You can't visit Fells Point without stopping in at The Sound Garden. That's a law in Baltimore City, just so you know. Really, this is by far the best music shop I've ever been to. I remember when they first opened; the store's policies, philosophy and mission have never changed. They exist to provide you good music at cheap prices - that's it, period. Over the years, they've expanded to provide not only good music, but video games, DVDs, reading material, and things to wear. The staff is helpful, friendly, but doesn't hover and won't walk around watching you like a prison guard; they're too busy in the side alcove counting CDs and calculating prices for buy-backs. You will easily get your money's worth if you decide to trade in here; store credit is worth 20% more than cash, but they offer fair cash prices as well. I just traded in about 50 CDs or so and got 200 bucks in SC (would've been 175 in cash) - you can't get better than that. Note: if you're looking to trade up, use the red door on the side - not the main entrance. You'll set the alarm off. Excellent selection of DVDs here - whole series are available, some quite rare. They carry every genre in the business and have items that you might not find other places. It's astonishing how many "rarities" you can find here, and for cheap. I was able to pick up a rare, 500-copy-pressing-only box set of one of my favorite bands, easily valued at over 500 dollars, for less than one hundred. Ah-mazing! Parking actually isn't a problem here - they have a little lot in the back specifically for customers. Be aware, though - you can't park here, go in the shop for a few minutes, then wander off and leave your car while you bar-hop. They WILL tow you - I saw it happen to one unfortunate the night we visited. Also a good place for local bands to advertise their shows. Just ask the staff to place your handbill in a visible spot - they'll do it happily. This is the best that it gets. You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't stop here. This place is awesome. It's everything you'd want in a record store! Goofy stickers and toys, novelty items no one ever needs, and an amazing selection of CDs and Vinyl. I was looking for a few Def Leppard CD's that are rare to see nowa days; I checked the new and used CD's and came up dry. No biggie I mean these guys can't hold every bands' album made over 30 years ago! I went to the front desk and asked the employee if they knew where I could get the albums from. He said he'd order both for me and have them in by next week! He even told me to just pay him once they arrive. I was amazed at the awesome customer service and ability to find these albums so fast. I'll not only come back to buy these CDs; I'll be back for more music anytime I'm looking for some funky old tunes! Rock on guys! read more
