You really can't beat the cozy atmosphere, general chill vibe, knowledgeable bartenders ohhhh and they have legit Italian coffee machines and I had a - def not Italian approved - after dinner cappuccino. Pro tip: Friday is was tough to get a seat. Make a resy or show up at 5:30. Otherwise, don't complain you have to wait. Don't miss this Belgian bar down the alley on Wisconsin Avenue! Loved the dark, romantic vibe and lively music. We came here after a long day of driving and the refreshing, crispy beers ((Stillwater/extra dry) really hit the spot with the saffron mussels which I would recommend along with the Belgium meatballs. They have an extensive beer menu so this will be a great place for drinks as well in the bar area. Great Belgian pub in Georgetown. Right off M St. through an alleyway. I was greeted warmly as soon as I entered and shown to a table. The atmosphere inside is an upscale pub with low lighting. The beer selection is really robust and diverse but elected for a mimosa as I'd been at the soccer bar drinking beers beforehand. For my main entree I ordered the Leige Burger. The burger was simple but was placed in two waffles and cooked to my liking, the perfect brunch fill up. Not much else to note from my experience. Friendly service but I was in and out pretty quick. However, my experience was soured by an overcharge on my credit card which I only discovered a few days later. Perhaps they just misread the number '5' for a '6'? Party of 6 comes with an "automatic gratuity of 20%" so the employees didn't do their part to earn a good/deserved tip. Two people were waiting for their beers for 15min after the rest of the people received theirs. Waited for a glass of water for about 15min. No refills . Do better and earn your tip. read more

I've been once before for just drinks but this time came for brunch and it did not disappoint. I started with a standard mimosa and promptly swapped over to the smoky and the bandits after tasting my husbands. We started with the croquette de fromage and they were very good but it was a small portion with only 3 on the plate so not great for sharing. Then we got the French toast and the croque madam. The French toast came with whipped cream and berries, it was good but I wish it had disclosed that there were raisins in it (I don't love surprise raisins). The sandwich was open face and huge and had very rich sauce on it that was soooo good. It also came with fries very filling meal! Oh I also got a side of bacon that was cooked perfectly. We ended with the de ranke noir and it was SO good. Service was absolutely amazing so friendly, quick, and knowledgeable. We sat at the bar for a more chill vibe and it was perfect for us. This is a deceptively unassuming yet bustling spot in the Georgetown neighborhood of DC. For that reason I highly recommend you make reservations. There's a parking garage very close by for those not fortunate to find street parking. The hostess was graceful and efficient. Our server was well acquainted with the menu and gave us some excellent recommendations. I learned, however, that absinthe can sneak up on you! Belgian beers are their specialty. The mussels are de rigueur and deservingly so. Plentiful, fresh and, surprisingly, fairly priced. I had the burger cooked medium and it was juicy and flavorful. Unfortunately the bun couldn't hang. Seriously I hope the chef and management consider obtaining the buns from another source. This is rather odd considering that the rustic bread which came with the mussels was a perfectly crusted exterior over a malty interior. How could the same bakery make both? Took disproportionately long for the entrees to arrive and my friend's steak was cooked rare rather than medium as requested. But the fries that came with our meals were worth it! Neat restaurant with average food. Ambiance is great, including the walk through an alley to get to the front doors of the restaurant. It's a dark pub feel inside with great service. Our waitress was on top of her game throughout the meal. We never had to wait for a drink and the timing of the meal was spot on. For entrees, we had the brussel sprouts, meatballs and the croquettes. The sprouts were by far the star of the meal. They were cooked well and the sauce amplified the taste of appetizer. The meatballs and croquettes were bland and pretty forgettable. For my entree I had the beer braised short ribs. The ribs were very tender and they fell off the bones. The potato side was cooked well, but didn't add much to the plate in terms of flavor. My biggest issue with the entree and the appetizers was the portion size. All the portion sizes were pretty small. This was the only meal I had during my Washington trip where I was hungry at the end of the meal. I definitely recommend this restaurant for its ambiance and if you're looking to have a couple of drinks at the end of the night. Not sure this is the right place if your looking a for filling meal. read more

Down a long alley it had a cozy and unpretentious ambiance. Service was friendly and unobtrusive. Draft cider is great for folks that don't like sweet. I recommend! Food: The free bread and herbed butter is amazing! Love it! The Brussel sprout app had a surprise pop with pomegranate seeds and savory bacon. The meatball app is must try with special house sauce. Yum. We enjoyed the meat and cheese tray but are not pate people so that was a miss for us. The meat and cheese plate changes daily so be sure to ask what they are bringing you. I came with my friends this afternoon, and this place is fantastic! I love that it's sort of tucked back in the alley. Makes it even more exciting when you find it. Ian, our server, was super friendly and attentive. Ian knew the menu very well which I appreciated and didn't make us feel rushed at all while we worked our way through their massive beer list. Sovereign definitely has one of the best Belgian-style beer lists I've ever seen, and the place is super down to earth and cozy. For food, I had the smoked salmon salad which was a perfect, light bite that complemented the smoked salmon well. I was a little hungrier still and got the smoked salmon tartine which was beautifully hardy with the perfect mix of flavors. The salmon roe added an especially nice touch to give an extra pop of savory sweetness. I love this place and look forward to coming back some time! read more

Food was good! We had the steak tartar, croquettes, and I had the Sovereign burger - which was pretty tasty. It is quite loud in here since it is a bar, so just keep that in mind. Seating is close together but if you go in expecting it to be more upbeat, you'll be fine! If you're a beer fan, they have many, many options on the back of the menu. Cozy, ambient bar in Georgetown that's perfect for a date night! It's darkly lit inside with cozy seating and a fairly extensive beer and cocktail list. Also, it's slightly set back from the hustle and bustle of Georgetown and you have to walk down a cute alleyway with strung lights overhead to get to the entrance which creates a lovely vibe. Once inside, you can sit on the main floor or go to the lower level. The lower level had the dim, intimate atmosphere. When I went with a friend, I got a beer and my friend got a martini. Both were great and fairly priced. Unfortunately, I didn't try any of the food but it looked pretty good. However, I'd go just for the drinks and the atmosphere. read more

I visited last week for happy hour and it was pretty good. It was relatively quiet on a Tuesday and easy to get a seat. They have a good happy hour that offers 4 beers, 4 wines, 4 spirits, and 3 apps for $5 each from Monday to Friday 5-6:30 PM. The beers go for $7 on the regular menu. Not much variety on the beer selection (wit, saison, two blonde ales) but they were good. We got all three of the snacks: petite loaded fries, Belgian meatballs, and Brussels sprouts. They were all fine but my favorite was the fries, which reminded me of poutine. I was not a fan of the mustard sauce on the meatballs or the pomegranate in the Brussels but that's just a taste preference, the dishes themselves were fine. It's not going to knock your socks off but I appreciate them doing happy hour at all, especially with both drinks and food on offer. read more

A very cute, almost hidden gem of a spot in Georgetown. We got a table without a reservation on a Sunday night! Fitting for a Belgium restaurant, the draft beer selection was vast and they offered half pours, which makes it easier to try more of the offerings. Food wise, we got a few appetizers to start: the bitterballen is a unique item and was pretty good, but the steak tartare was definitely my favorite! It had great flavor and a pretty large portion. I got the larger portion of the Moules frites (mariniere) and my brother got the same but with the saffron flavor. While you get plenty of mussels and fries, the flavor was a little lacking on the Mariniere, so i'd recommend the saffron flavor. My boyfriend got the rabbit and it was very good as well. Ambiance was dark, but pretty fitting for the type of restaurant it was. It almost felt like you were in a secret little pub in Europe which was fun! Service was good. We did have to remind our server about one of our beer orders as it was forgotten, but pretty good service all in all. Would recommend coming here, especially if you're a beer fan! read more

My partner and I ventured here on a Wednesday evening and had an amazing time. This restaurant is nestled quietly off of Wisconsin Ave and M Street. We had zero issues getting a table and did not have a reservation before we came. Our server was attentive and kind and the overall food quality was great. We started with the bitterballen and pickled plate and each ordered the braised pork cheeks. We agreed that the pork paired with the potatoes and apples was a perfect combo. Their selection of cocktails and beer were extensive and we each tried one of each. It was adequately quiet and the restaurant was a little dark, giving a fun and intimate dining experience. I often make the 1.5 hour drive to Sovereign to celebrate special occasions and milestones. This time, I brought my craft beer loving friends that had never been before. The entire table was impressed with the imported Belgian drafts, rare bottles, food, and service. The drafts featured several very rare and delicious Belgian beers. And the encyclopedic bottle list was just stunning. We ordered 7 bottles to share, including offerings from Trappist Achel and Pannepot, which are very hard to find in the US. We even got to try a 2014 Trappist Rochefort 8. All the food was great. And our server Franklin l, made the night very enjoyable. I highly recommend a visit to the Sovereign for all beer lovers and lovers of Belgian culture. read more

Late review but came here for New Year's with my husband and it was EXACTLY what we were looking for. We're in our 30s so we still love to party but weren't looking for a packed club of kids much younger than us and this place was perfect. Downstairs they served excellent drinks and unlimited food (definitely want to go back for a normal lunch or dinner) and upstairs there was a dance floor with music geared towards millennials. read more

Went with my wife for valentines day dinner. Not my first time, maybe my 50th time in the almost 10 years since they opened. Me and my wife both got the valentines day special with the beer pairing. We both got scallops for 1st coarse and filet for the second course and then we diverged from each other for dessert. The filet was amazing and it paired with a cantillion that was made with merlot grapes, so not a wine, but a very good belgian tart beer made with grapes. The pairing with the filet was excellent. If you have never been to the sovereign the ambiance is incredible. Feels like Belgium circa 1900. Anyway great place. I can't live with out it. read more

My husband tried the imperial stout from Maine (Infinite Darkness), and that was also really good. The smoky saison from Maine (Vestige) is good, but not our favorite. For dinner, we started with a traditional Belgian appetizer, Bitterballen, which was tasty. Just be prepared for the horseradish because wow, did it open my sinuses a couple of times. I ordered the rabbit for my main entrée and my husband ordered the Sovereign Burger. I have not had rabbit in a while, and it was cooked perfectly. I also thought the carrots and other vegetables went well with the meat. My husband said the burger was exactly how he wanted it. The Sovereign had 2 levels available for my date and I, and we chose the darker, slower paced downstairs. We sat at the bar and each enjoyed fantastic cocktails. Food was hot and steamy but so were the beer, the water and the ambiance. Manager Louis was uncaring and unconcerned. I get that these were not ideal circumstances to be serving dinner, but expected something beyond a should shrug when I pointed out my concerns. Not hospitable at all. Didn't realize this restaurant was doing so well they could not care about the comfort of their patrons. Never going back.
