This place is fantastic! We sat at the bar on a Sunday afternoon. Great atmosphere, beautiful bar. I appreciate the hooks under the bar to hang your purse or bags. Thank you for having that. It's a detail that many bars forget but I can relax and enjoy my stay more when I know my belongings are safely tucked away. We got the Smorgesboard and Saffron Mussels. Both were EXCELLENT. The Mister got a few beers. The Smorgesboard had every charcuterie option and it was really fun building the perfect bite. I thought it was absolutely worth the price. I've paid more for less. Let me take a moment and collect myself before I talk about the Saffron Mussels. They were freaking amazing. The broth was mildly spicy, a powerful punch of salty herby flavor that paired wonderfully with the mussels. They were perfectly cooked with a tender chew. Served with fries and chunks of bread to sop up all that glorious broth. If you're thinking about getting the mussels, just do it. Truly, one of the best pot of mussels I've had. Came to the Sovereign on a Friday night for happy hour -- a great deal, cocktails for $6 and some bites. Walked to the upstairs bar and was able to find a seat no problem around 6:30pm. There were still seats at the downstairs bar too. I went for a cocktail off their full menu not featured on happy hour - the tricky tripel, and it was delicious! The bartender did a great job explaining the tasting notes of all the drinks and helped me choose a good one. I also sipped the Belgian sour many of my friends opted for and that's a great cocktail for just $6 during happy hour. Happy hour is tricky -- it's really a great deal making it difficult to justify paying full price for anything but the crowd here is two folds. You have a lot of young college kids mixed with an older crowd so one comes for the deals while the other comes for amazing food and cocktails -- something for everyone! Overall I would definitely come back for dinner. This place has a very lowkey casual vibe but upscale food and drinks. The atmosphere/ambiance leaves a little to be desired with not so great lighting and no background music that I can recall but still a nice spot to pop in. read more

Perhaps the best alleyway bar that I've ever been to! 5 stars for the epic beer selection, 5 stars for the well-prepared cocktails, 5 stars for the delicious bar food, 5 stars for the excellent happy hour offerings, and 5 stars for the atmosphere that each bar floor has to offer. If I could, I would give The Sovereign 5+ stars through the roof, and I'm saying that after just one incredible visit! I knew I was in for a treat when I glimpsed the special Snallygaster beer menu on Untappd before coming. But I was even more impressed when I walked through the alleyway and took in the expansive darkwood interior, complete with numerous upstairs and downstairs seating arrangements. But the huge downstairs bar and friendly staff made it an easy choice. With $6 drafts from the likes of Lost Abbey and Oxbow, $6 wines and spirits, and $6 appetzers like brussel sprouts and loaded fries made this one of the best happy hours that I've experienced in a bar! The petite portion of fries was actually a pretty good size and fully loaded with roast beef, mushroom cream sauce, and parmesan cheese. and the brussel sprouts were delightful with their bacon, parmesan cheese, pomegranate, and kriek gastrique. The Sovereign was a beer haven on this night with its Snalygaster preview menu, but it's also a beer haven on regular occasions with over 50 drafts and plenty of featured bottles. But it also featured a pretty impressive wine list, absinthe list, and cocktail menu that included a good mix of mocktails. It's tucked away on a side street and it feels cozy as soon as you enter it; the atmosphere and lighting is perfect and it reminded us a lot of places we visited in Belgium. This is the best Belgian lambic beer bar in DC, hands down and they have the food and general vibes to match. As somebody who loves Belgian sour beer, I'm sad that I've only just made it here after moving back to DC 10 years ago. The reason to come here is the beer. The beer selection in general is fantastic and you can probably find something to make almost anyone happy on tap, but the real gems are the Belgian lambics and really the bottle selection they have--even thought they can be pricey. The last time I came here with an old friend and we drank our way through two 750 ml bottles of Belgian lambics: one raspberry and one cherry that were some of the best beer I've ever had. We also had the mussels: he got the classic Belgian and I got the Saffron, but they were both excellent. I really liked the occasional piece of sausage and I found that that mussels were plenty of food for dinner. read more

A gorgeous gem tucked off the main road, down a lil alley. Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and snagged a seat at one of the larger high tops upstairs. Super homey interior with a great causal vibe. Ordered the beet salad with a side of fries -- I hear life is all about balance! The beet salad was very, very beet forward. If you're into that, then I highly recommend it! Fries weren't the best I've had but they were hot, fresh, and plentiful. I love a place tucked behind buildings with an alley for the entrance. These places can't survive unless they are truly good at what they do and The Sovereign does Belgium beer very well. Belgium beer is in a class all its own. The Sovereign could easily be mistaken for a Belgium Trappist Abbey. Bottom line up front: This place was great and I'd happily go back. Loved the food and beer. They just need to shore up their service a bit. You should be aware that their beer is delicious, largely European, and is served in the Euro traditions of being other than ice cold like we Americans are used to. The beer is great! Croquettes, bacon wrapped dates, and duck confit were all fantastic! The service was so awkward. It was my first time eating there. I showed up early for my reservation and apparently before the dining room opened. Took them forever to greet me. Then I couldn't find a seat in the bar so I stood by the bar waiting for service. Nothing. Then some seats opened up at a communal table that they directed me to. I sat down and got no service. For food, we started with Bitterballen, a Dutch meat stew formed into a crispy ball with a rich mustard with plenty of horseradish. Rabbit in Kriek is a Belgian classic featuring rabbit roasted in beer with farro, bacon, carrots, and sour cherries. Pro tip: Friday is was tough to get a seat. Make a resy or show up at 5:30. Otherwise, don't complain you have to wait. First time coming here after I saw some IG marketing. Wasn't truly sure where this was located as it's set back from the street down an ally way. The dining area is underground and has a speakeasy/brewery feel to it. We went for brunch so the ambiance wasn't super awakening. Gave off more happy hour/dinner feels; tad bit cold and not super welcoming. We ordered the spritzer bottle special for $45. The sparkling wine was good and we were able to add Aperol as we pleased. The "fancy garnishes" it's served with aren't fancy at all and really just a few cherries and lime/lemon twists. I ordered the smoked salmon Benedict which came with a side of potatoes. I had the hollandaise in the side because it really makes or breaks the dish. Glad I did because it was really bland, no flavor. Even after adding salt and pepper, there was no depth to the sauce. The salmon was not overly salty which I was grateful for. Eggs were well poached and still runny which I appreciated. The fried potatoes were the best part. My boyfriend ordered the Belgian breakfast with sausage. The waffle wasn't as crisp on the outside as I would have expected, but the inside was still fluffy. I'm not sure if they bought or made the sausage, but it was also severely lacking in flavor and spice. Sage was the only thing that came through and that was at the slightest. Our friend had the chicken and waffles. He didn't have much to say, but said it was pretty standard, nothing special. Our server hadn't ever served brunch before, but she was attentive. She did mention they had a rooftop but it was only open after 3. Maybe this has a more "friendly" atmosphere. Overall, it was just an okay brunch experience. Great Belgian pub in Georgetown. Right off M St. through an alleyway. I was greeted warmly as soon as I entered and shown to a table. The atmosphere inside is an upscale pub with low lighting. The beer selection is really robust and diverse but elected for a mimosa as I'd been at the soccer bar drinking beers beforehand. For my main entree I ordered the Leige Burger. The burger was simple but was placed in two waffles and cooked to my liking, the perfect brunch fill up. Not much else to note from my experience. Friendly service but I was in and out pretty quick. They have an extensive beer menu so this will be a great place for drinks as well in the bar area.
