More of a 3.5, rounding up because I would have probably liked it a lot more if I ate meat. Which probably makes it clear that if you are vegetarian this is not the friendliest menu. The beer selection is incredible, vibes are solid - it is pretty old world and upscale for a beer joint - but if you are looking for a full meal vegetarians should go elsewhere. They *have* vegetarian options but it's one of those things where they do the bare minimum because they have to and your choices are like...the one thing. Which leads me to the one vegetarian entree, the risotto. It was fine. Not mindblowing. Small portion for the price - small portions all around, frankly. See my pic. Our server, who was impressively attentive/efficient given that he was the only person making the rounds to all of the tables in the upstairs room, which were packed because of the World Cup, recommended getting.the brussels sprouts small plate without bacon, so I did. I did not like it. It came with pomegranate seeds and a sauce that were sweet but then had parmesan and savory flavors that did not go. I suspect the salty, fatty bacon was important to balancing out these flavors. People I was with got house pickles, fries and meatballs which all appeared solid. The portions for the fries and meatballs were pretty teeny for the price IMO. Like I said, beer selection is out of this world. Not mad at the prices or portions there, especially given that it's largely imported. Is this personally a place I would make a go to? No. Only if I am taking out a friend who is super into beer tasting. But if I were super into French and Belgian beer and or really liked that kind of food (eg mussels and very meaty Northern European dishes) ? Maybe. So my personal recommendation is to come, have beer, enjoy the ambiance, and treat food as an afterthought for if you need something to eat. read more

The Sovereign is alright. I went here for a work thing. It was PACKED on a wednesday night which is impressive. Not sure what to make of DC crowds but there were a lot of people. I had a hard time making an order. I really don't like standing around at a bar aimlessly hoping for the bartender to call on me. That was the situation I was in here. Once I got the bartenders attention it was easy and quick to get my drink, it just took a while and its annoying when they go to other people who got there after you first. The bar is full of seating too, so you have to stand behind people who are already sat and drinking to try to flag them down which feels awkward. This place is fantastic! We sat at the bar on a Sunday afternoon. Great atmosphere, beautiful bar. I appreciate the hooks under the bar to hang your purse or bags. Thank you for having that. It's a detail that many bars forget but I can relax and enjoy my stay more when I know my belongings are safely tucked away. We got the Smorgesboard and Saffron Mussels. Both were EXCELLENT. The Mister got a few beers. The Smorgesboard had every charcuterie option and it was really fun building the perfect bite. I thought it was absolutely worth the price. I've paid more for less. Let me take a moment and collect myself before I talk about the Saffron Mussels. They were freaking amazing. The broth was mildly spicy, a powerful punch of salty herby flavor that paired wonderfully with the mussels. They were perfectly cooked with a tender chew. Served with fries and chunks of bread to sop up all that glorious broth. If you're thinking about getting the mussels, just do it. Truly, one of the best pot of mussels I've had. If you want to impress your date to a nice Belgium restaurant, then this is a place to be now are the tables too close to one another a little bit also is the menu little irritating with the words that they choose to be in Belgium rather than English also true but the food more than makes up for it as well as the ambience I'll be honest because not only is it dimly lit, but kind of in an intimate way where you are truly sitting down with someone or your friends staff also are very quick to answer any and all kind of questions to serve you, but not be overbearing with their presence, but for the main show the food that they serve all again kind of Belgium inspired or traditional dishes was fantastic. My partner had a flatbread dish, which was perfect for her, as well as for myself. I had a rabbit for the first time which I was a little hesitant on, but glad that I made that decision because it was the most savory dish, one of most savory dishes I ever had and you know it would go here again, if not, for the fact that Georgetown gets flooded by students every fallen spring so I'll be back here come next winter or summer read more

Perhaps the best alleyway bar that I've ever been to! 5 stars for the epic beer selection, 5 stars for the well-prepared cocktails, 5 stars for the delicious bar food, 5 stars for the excellent happy hour offerings, and 5 stars for the atmosphere that each bar floor has to offer. If I could, I would give The Sovereign 5+ stars through the roof, and I'm saying that after just one incredible visit! I knew I was in for a treat when I glimpsed the special Snallygaster beer menu on Untappd before coming. But I was even more impressed when I walked through the alleyway and took in the expansive darkwood interior, complete with numerous upstairs and downstairs seating arrangements. But the huge downstairs bar and friendly staff made it an easy choice. With $6 drafts from the likes of Lost Abbey and Oxbow, $6 wines and spirits, and $6 appetzers like brussel sprouts and loaded fries made this one of the best happy hours that I've experienced in a bar! The petite portion of fries was actually a pretty good size and fully loaded with roast beef, mushroom cream sauce, and parmesan cheese. and the brussel sprouts were delightful with their bacon, parmesan cheese, pomegranate, and kriek gastrique. The Sovereign was a beer haven on this night with its Snalygaster preview menu, but it's also a beer haven on regular occasions with over 50 drafts and plenty of featured bottles. But it also featured a pretty impressive wine list, absinthe list, and cocktail menu that included a good mix of mocktails. Toss it a full dinner menu loaded with charcuterie, mussels, flatbreads, and then some; and regular involvement in events like Winter Restaurant Week, and the Sovereign is a great bar that has it all! read more

Came to the Sovereign on a Friday night for happy hour -- a great deal, cocktails for $6 and some bites. Walked to the upstairs bar and was able to find a seat no problem around 6:30pm. There were still seats at the downstairs bar too. I went for a cocktail off their full menu not featured on happy hour - the tricky tripel, and it was delicious! The bartender did a great job explaining the tasting notes of all the drinks and helped me choose a good one. I also sipped the Belgian sour many of my friends opted for and that's a great cocktail for just $6 during happy hour. Happy hour is tricky -- it's really a great deal making it difficult to justify paying full price for anything but the crowd here is two folds. You have a lot of young college kids mixed with an older crowd so one comes for the deals while the other comes for amazing food and cocktails -- something for everyone! Overall I would definitely come back for dinner. This place has a very lowkey casual vibe but upscale food and drinks. This is a great Belgian restaurant and one of the best that we visited on our trip to DC. It's tucked away on a side street and it feels cozy as soon as you enter it; the atmosphere and lighting is perfect and it reminded us a lot of places we visited in Belgium. We sat at the bar and tried a variety of beers, cocktails, and some amazing absinthe. The beer selection was fantastic with a large variety of Belgian styles, my wife loved her cocktails, and the absinthe is served in the traditional sense, which was a great experience for us. This is the best Belgian lambic beer bar in DC, hands down and they have the food and general vibes to match. As somebody who loves Belgian sour beer, I'm sad that I've only just made it here after moving back to DC 10 years ago. The reason to come here is the beer. The beer selection in general is fantastic and you can probably find something to make almost anyone happy on tap, but the real gems are the Belgian lambics and really the bottle selection they have--even thought they can be pricey. The last time I came here with an old friend and we drank our way through two 750 ml bottles of Belgian lambics: one raspberry and one cherry that were some of the best beer I've ever had. We also had the mussels: he got the classic Belgian and I got the Saffron, but they were both excellent. I really liked the occasional piece of sausage and I found that that mussels were plenty of food for dinner. read more

Super homey interior with a great causal vibe. Ordered the beet salad with a side of fries -- I hear life is all about balance! The beet salad was very, very beet forward. If you're into that, then I highly recommend it! Fries weren't the best I've had but they were hot, fresh, and plentiful. I love a place tucked behind buildings with an alley for the entrance. These places can't survive unless they are truly good at what they do and The Sovereign does Belgium beer very well. Belgium beer is in a class all its own. The Sovereign could easily be mistaken for a Belgium Trappist Abbey. The lettuce was super fresh, the dressing was the best I've ever had in DC, and the chicken was perfectly cooked. The mussels were absolutely exquisite. I just visited DC after a few months and decided to meet up with some friends. The first time we visited this place was a few years before Covid. The place had a really nice atmosphere and the food and drinks were good. We returned a few times in 2023 and 2024. The drinks were still good and they had a pork schnitzel that we all really liked. I think they replaced it with pork cheeks in 2025 because it wasn't there anymore. Anyways the last few times in 25 and 26. We had the burgers and the drinks were still very good. The beet salad my husband had included a mix of yellow and red beets along with decent spring salad. I showed up early for my reservation and apparently before the dining room opened. Took them forever to greet me. Then I couldn't find a seat in the bar so I stood by the bar waiting for service. Nothing. Then some seats opened up at a communal table that they directed me to. I sat down and got no service. It took 21 minutes to finally get a much needed beer, and i would have left if not for the reservation. Thankfully i stayed. They overcame a rocky start and n made me a believer. read more

We had the Infinite Darkness Imperial stout and Brugs Quadrupel (Straffe Hendrik), a fruity, dark-roasted lambic. For food, we started with Bitterballen, a Dutch meat stew formed into a crispy ball with a rich mustard with plenty of horseradish. Rabbit in Kriek is a Belgian classic featuring rabbit roasted in beer with farro, bacon, carrots, and sour cherries.
