I recently went to the SPA on Castlefrank Kanata for a facial. I go regularly to the Spa but it is the first time I have an esthetician who wears rubber gloves to massage my face. Although I told the esthetician that I found that very unpleasant and not relaxing, my comments and feelings were completely disregarded. One doesn't expect to pay $200 for a facial with rubber gloves I also complained to the reception who responded by saying" we are sorry that you didn't like it" When booking an appointment for facials, clients should be informed that the esthetician will be wearing rubber gloves for the facials. This is one of only 2 of my favourite locations in all of the Ottawa area to get a pedicure. So much so that I am quite surprised that I have never written a review for it! Therefore it is with great pleasure that I introduce my 250th review! The Spa Day Retreat offers a wide variety of services, and they are exceptional at delivering them. For those of you who love history as much as I do, this stone building on Castlefrank has some great history behind it. It was originally built around 1824 for one William Hodgins, and nearly 90 years later, it was purchased by George Henry Sparks (in 1912). The Sparks family lived in it until 2001 when the Quest Academy purchased it to convert it to a school. During that process, the building was damaged by fire. (Don't quote me on this, but it may be that this fire put Quest out of business.) A short while after that, The Spa purchased the site, and restored the building to its current state and its former glory. And they stayed true to the original design of the building by reproducing the interior millwork based on the 1920 period of the house. It's truly a gorgeous building, inside and out! Please note that the Spa Day Retreat has 2 other locations as well as this one: one on Richmond Road also in an old refurbished building, and the Spa holiday retreat in Jamaica! However, for those of us who can't afford to hop on a plane and take a vacation, this location in Kanata is quite heavenly, and a very large and clean facility. The staff is polite and really knows their stuff. They offer you free tea or coffee during your treatment. They also offer manicures, massage, and hair salon treatments. You can spend a whole day here, and get lunch included. This would make a truly marvellous gift for that wonderful person in your life! My favourite spa treatment is a pedicure with hot wax. It took me a very long time gather up the gumption to let anyone touch my feet, as I'm fairly sensitive and quite ticklish. I thought I'd never be able to have a pedicure done! However, I also suffer from very dry skin, especially on the heels of my feet. The treatment really takes care of that, and I will never again let my feet get as bad as they were. Having the nails painted afterwards is simply icing on the cake. In the end, my favourite part is having my feet massaged. I'm relaxing, just by thinking about that!! This is not the cheapest pedicure you will ever get, but in my humble opinion, you get what you pay for. I've been to the "laundromat"-type places, where it's fast in and fast out, and way cheaper than this, and for those too, I say you get what you pay for. I may go to the spa for a pedicure 2 or 3 times a year, and I love it. I will most certainly be back. read more

The facilities and location are nice, but the service is just bad... the receptionist was unprofessional, the facial was not even close to what it should be. No proper exfoliation, the massage was very very gentle (not in a good way). The esthetician seemed really bored and didn't even try to make any personal contact (not even small talk). For today I had booked my OxyGeneo Facial treatment which I have been waiting for a long time to replace what I earlier used microdermabrasion that is not offered anymore. The treatment price is $170 after tax and took them to finish 20 minutes (!) and I have absolutely nothing on my face, on my skin. I have been going to The Spa since the Bells Corners location opened and was thrilled when the larger and closer to home Kanata location opened. Initially The Spa was top notch. Now - horrible. The customer service at the check-in and more importantly checking out desk is extremely rude, unprofessional and perform their tasks inadequately. I have used multiple services throughout my many years with The Spa and the only reason I walk through the door now is that my long standing hair stylist is there. Otherwise, I would not want to spend another dime in this establishment. The owners really need to look at the multiple online comments and start to review what is going on with staffing because their quality control is now horrendous and people LOVED both locations at the start. I was given bangs I didn't ask for. It was my first time here so I brought a photo of the hair I wanted but it was completely disregarded by the stylist. Even after coming back to "fix" the mess the style I wanted was unable to be achieved due to the bangs I was given. I left the second time being told to deal with it for the next 6 month until they grewout. I didn't come here to pay them only to make me feel ugly and leave in tears. I appreciate the second stylist who tried to reshape things but she still couldn't fix the damage that the first created. I went to The Spa for the first time today for a manicure. I got a plain manicure but was less than impressed. Though my manicurist was very sweet the manicure itself was less than desirable, especially for the price. The paint is chipped and bubbling; my cuticles look like they were hacked. Even more, I was told the paint left on my skin around my nail would come off when I washed my hands.... After coming home I decided to call management, I'm not the type to complain but for a $45 manicure, I decided it was worth it. The supervisor was very understanding and offered me a credit to redo my nails. I'm hoping round two is better. read more

Got my hair absolutely butchered, strange cause the first time the stylist got it right. Then the so ins time the hilites didn't go to the root. To cover her mistake hpshe added low lites and I don't know what else cause I walked out with black low lites, a green tint and my blond absolutely ashen. They where even more insulting telling me how great it look. Puh-lease! 200$ and 6hrs watesd. They get 2 stars cause it's a nice place. read more

I've been looking for a new waxing lady since my main one is off for medical leave so I looked up the spas nearest me and out popped up The Spa in Kanata, so I called them up and asked them what wax they used for Brazilian waxing and they said "hard wax" so I booked in my apt. The day of my apt when I walked in I was greeted and seated and everything was fine till I got called into the room, and the waxing had started. When she first applied the wax I realized it wasn't hard wax but it was Strip wax. I brought it up to the estheticians attention and she said that it was fine because it was gentle as well and wont "break" on some areas like hard wax sometimes does. During the apt it felt different and hurt a lot more than it ever had, but I thought that was just because it was a different wax. Once it was done I was red like always so i went to pay and continued on with my day. Throughout the day the redness wasn't going down at all and some areas were very tender, once I got home I realized that the areas that were tender didn't have any skin at all. Fast forward to this morning (morning after apt) the redness is still here and the spots with no skin are now starting to heal and scab over, so I called The Spa to tell them the situation, told them that I didn't want anything from them just to bring it up to the esthetician and that's it. The phone conversation wasn't even a minute long and I wasn't even told an apology. I've been getting waxed for over 3 years and have even had laser done in that area and have NEVER had such a bad experience with anything "down there". Won't be going back and still on the hunt for a new waxing place. read more
