Great Indian food in a beautiful setting for a good price. Will be back here lots. I went with just my partner. We had the $49 per head banquet for 2 which was enough food for 4 people. What we didn't finish we were able to take home. The service was fantastic and our waiter was even from Delhi. It took a little chatting to discover that as his English was entirely fluent. I am very particular about Indian food; it's not because I'm Indian or know anything about it. I think I have had more bad experiences than good, so I am reluctant to eat it. That said, The Spice Room blew all my misconceptions about Indian food out of the water. We came here twice during our 4 day stay in Sydney, we couldn't get enough. It's preferred to make reservations, this place is always busy. We got lucky without reservations by going early at 5pm, and agreeing to vacate our table in an hour. This was fine since table service was remarkably fast and efficient. Also. the food was brought out quickly, and it was so delicious we couldn't help but devour it in minutes. My husband prefers his food to have an atomic level of heat/spice. They catered to our tastes exactly as we wanted, all without killing the flavor. The wine list was extensive, with reasonably priced and more expensive bottles. Wine by the glass was also an option. We would gladly fly for 30 hours to come back to Sydney, just so we can eat here again. read more

Food was not great as a takeaway option. As there was a 2 hour wait, we opted for taking food back to our hotel, especially since the staff was very friendly and had plenty of advice for food options. The Chicken Tikka Masala was a little different than what we're used to, but besides that and the rice, the other two items we got were sub-par. The garlic Naan ended up being chewy and soggy, which could be attributed to being a takeaway item, but we couldn't get over how tough the lamb was in the "Lamb With Apricot and Potato Straws" entree. Overall we were very disappointed, since for a third of the price we could've walked into any mom-and-pop Indian restaurant in San Francisco and been happier. read more

Ordered the 2 course Banquet , everything was pretty good. The medium spice level is actually not spicy at all. The cocktails are pretty good, my friend found Queen's necklace absolutely amazing, I'm sure the name helped in that too. The white wines are just average. Decor is absolutely fantastic!! What struck me the most was the beautiful decor....I immediately felt like I wanted to spend the evening there. I loved that the kitchen was open and we could see in. The food was fabulous, and I'm not a big eater of Spicy Food. Food is great but I ordered takeout and their expected wait time was not even 50% of how long it eventually took. A 45 min wait ended up being a 1.5hr wait. Also, just as I was paying, I noticed an incremental 10% weekend surcharge. This wasnt mentioned on the phone when I ordered or even when I was paying - I only noticed because I saw it in the bill. When I confronted him, telling him it didnt make sense, he said 'well, it makes sense to us!' They are good, they know it and they are taking advantage of it. We absolutely loved everything about our experience - food, ambiance, decor, service and the vibe. We walked in as a party of 3 with no reservation at 7pm on a Saturday night. They were packed. They made room for us immediately (said we could have a four top table for an hour before next reservation for it -- very fair), service was delightful, friendly and efficient. The chicken tikka platter was moist, tender and flavorful, chicken tikka Marsala some of the best we've had and my personal favorite was the Punjabi Spiced Chickpea Curry! Had high expectations for this place as it had pretty decent reviews, but it was not as good as expected. I realized after frequenting various Indian restaurants, each has their own take or flare, so I take that into consideration. With that being said, many of the dishes, while good, were lacking a bit of those very traditional and highly developed Indian spices. We got some samosas and cauliflower pakoras to start. They were a little bland. I am used to more of a Gobi Manchurian type dish of spicey cauliflower, while this was just your basic, flavorless battered. Not my favorite. We also got chicken Korma, which everyone seemed to like, but the portion was quite small. In addition we ordered prawn vindaloo, omg, was that HOT! I have never in my life eaten anything so fiery. I can't even comment on the flavor, because all I tasted was fire. Good thing we ordered garlic naan bc I had to wrap the prawns in small pieces inside the naan and eat it like a burrito just to tolerate the heat level. The garlic naan was great and the shrimp vindaloo was better once stuffed in the bread. Lastly we ordered a yellow daal dish. Unfortunately, they had the same comments as myself when it came to the heat level. While the dish was good, it was too spicey. All in all, the dishes were decent and service was good, I would be willing to go back, but might try something new. read more

We went here for lunch. Liked both, the location as well as the ambience of the hotel. You get a view of the Australian local trains. The restrooms are decorated with the pics from the golden era of bollywood. We had jhal muri for appetizer which was a bengali bhel. For the main course, we had paneer kurchan, black lentil bukhara daal, with breads being peshawari naan (naan embedded with dryfruits) and garlic herb naan. The food was tasty overall. read more

We heard about this place and was so keen to finally try it! It was always booked out which made us more keen- what a disappointment it turned out to be!! I don't know why this place is popular, I'll say location! It's the only indian rest in the area. PROS: decor was nice, drinks were good, that's it. CONS: waiter was rude and arrogant, food was average (neither bad nor great), very pricey for very average food ($160 between 3 people), very squashy (don't trust the photos), food was not authentic We ordered two entrees and four mains and our guy waiter 'Rami' did not take anything down and instead, quickly repeated our 6 orders back to us. I had to clarify one order and he arrogantly replied 'I just said that!'. Looks like there's a few reviews on bad service here, don't bother coming here if you're looking to enjoy a nice night dinner! To add ontop of that, he got our orders wrong (we asked for spicy for two dishes! Geez) For authentic indian food try Abhi's in strathfield or wigram street in harris park (street full of authentic proper indian restaurants) Won't be back and would not recommend! read more

We stopped in while on a short visit to Sydney. The restaurant is near our hotel and my girlfriend and I love Indian food so we stopped in for dinner. This place is wonderful! We had samosas, mixed tandoori, and lamb rogan josh and everything was absolutely delicious. The ambiance is good and the service was attentive, friendly and professional. Had a lovely 48hrs in Sydney town and this was one of the highlights! This place was around the corner from our hotel on Macquarie Street and as the weather was average, our plan to hang out at the Opera Bar looked a bit dicey. Lucky we rang and booked as they were very busy for a Tuesday night & public holiday (Anzac Day). Walking in we were so impressed with the decor!!! Loved the attention to detail and how they haven't gone all Bollywood - love all the old pictures in the toilet! I know strange thing to mention in a food review... So about the food- didn't have a bad dish amongst us! We decided to share and tried the railway goat curry, butter chicken, yellow dhal, prawns, eggplant and garlic naan. Yum! The eggplant was the star of the show with the prawns (think they were grilled?) a very close second. We all loved our meal at the Spice Room. My only negative would be the air conditioner that blew directly on a few seats at our center table. But we solved it by making those with jumpers sit there! The staff were lovely and the prices were very reasonable for the CBD. read more
