I stopped into The Spice Suite for the first time yesterday. Let's just say, it won't be the last time. I've already started working on my list for the next trip. I really wanted to pick up a few things I'd seen mentioned on the store's Instagram account, so I made a list and a budget before my shopping adventure. The store stocks a wonderful variety of balsamic vinegars, oils, BBQ sauces, hot sauces, jams and spreads, teas, syrups, vanilla extracts, creamed honey, baking mixes, snacks, cookware, dinnerware, and, of course, spices. I really love that Angel, the owner, really encourages people to be creative when it comes to cooking. Go into the store with an open mind and see what speaks to you. I also love that Angel shares her space with other black women entrepreneurs who don't have their own brick and mortar stores. Because of COVID restrictions, there was a line outside when I arrived. But, it moved fairly quickly, and the entire shopping experience felt very safe. There's hand sanitizer at the door and shopping baskets are sanitized between clients. Welcoming vibes, friendly folks (business owners and customers), great music, awesome products...altogether a wonderful experience. I was in and out in about 15 minutes with about a dozen items in my little paper bag (highly recommend taking a reusable shopping bag!). I bought the pizza dough because I have a pizza stone that is rarely used. Now I am a professional pizza maker! No more pizza delivery for me. I must confess that dinner wasn't served until 9:30. Should have read the directions ahead of time. It takes like 3 hours to rise but the lovely sales lady did warn me that it wasn't a quick process. I've been following this shop online for awhile. I just had to go by while in town and it even exceeded my pretty high expectations!

A gem of a shop! We're so lucky to have this beautiful business here in Takoma DC. Their spices are wonderful, balanced, and very thoughtfully blended. The packaging is also totally adorable/stylish/minimalistic in a very chic way, so that appeals to me, too. The store is gorgeous--very welcoming and thoughtfully laid out. It's easy to move around in the space and peruse all of the goods--spices, sauces, vinegars, dried grains, and soup bases... a little bit of everything. They also have a nice cozy nook to sit in and just chill, learn, converse. It's lovely. My favorite spices? The smoky porcini and the smoky sage and garlic. They're just phenomenal--so tasty and unique! I particularly love to use them on grilled salmon and veggies. So good. read more

My sister and I went last year. It was a cool experience and the space is beautiful. My sister got some spices and I got their knife set and some other things. One of the blades of the knives started splitting before I even had the set a full year. I emailed them about the set and they told me thank you for the information without offering any solutions so that was disappointing. I have been following this buisness on Instagram and finally decided to go. I went as soon as the store opened to avoid possible holiday crowds. I was immediately greeted warmly and was told I could set my purse down to make for a more comfortable shopping experience. There was SO many options. I was able to shop in peace ( I actually hate when employees ask me 200 times if I need help) and if I had a question, she was there to help ( I forgot her name but I believe she was a vendor and I purchased 2 of her soy candles). I see a lot of reviews complaining that they needed guidance on how to use the spices, syrups, oils and sauces and instructions should be listed on how to use them BUT I believe that is so limiting. You can literally use what you want however you want. This allows to experiment and create something wonderful. For example, I picked up the lavender lime bourbon having NO idea how to use it but it just spoke to me. I ended up reducing it, adding some things and making a BOMB dipping sauce for party wings. I picked up the orange cranberry balsamic sauce, added brown sugar and cooked it down to drizzle over fried brussel sprouts. Bottom line this place is for everyone but especially if you want a more creative element to your cooking experience. Go with an open mind and dont limit yourself by thinking you need an instruction manual. Just go with it! ALSO how can I not support a black buisness that supports black buisness?! Stopped in yesterday, what a gem of a store! When you walk in you can feel the warmth and comfort vibes. It is very clear that a lot of love and thought has gone into the products on the shelf. This has been on my to visit list for a while. Overall it was a great experience. I was extremely fortunate that it was not crowded when I started, so I had plenty of time to taste and explore. However by the time I left it was PACKED. I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much. All of the previous review, mention asking for ideas to use the spices. I totally get the concept that it's supposed to be an open minded process, however guidance is nice. There was a patron that frequented before that ran down how she used ALOT of stuff. That was a blessing. I came home and found a cocktail recipe to use one of the balsamic vinegars. It was DELISH. Overall, it's a dope place with amazing spices. First timers might fare better when the shop is a tad emptier. And some simple suggestions for how to use each spice on the descriptions might be nice. read more

Went for spices, left feeling full and grateful. Any visit to The Spice Suite is fun. It's beautiful, lively, and always has something new to see and explore. Today was different. Today, we had the opportunity to catch She Candle Company and New Vintage by Sam as they popped up. My ten year old also got to meet Angel, the owner of this heaven on earth, who greeted her warmly and poured into her, encouraging her love of cooking. We got to get some candles just before they sold out (wooo!) And my daughter had a chance to talk healing hardware and stones with Sam, who encouraged her to reach out anytime. When I tell y'all my daughter left this place with a pep in her step and her head held high, I am not exaggerating. It is one thing to get quality products and good customer service. It is entirely different to enter a place, feel welcome the entire time, and leave feeling grateful for having had the experience of these incredible women shining their light and sharing it with us (especially my daughter). Let me first say, I'm not one who enjoys cooking. But I like to eat well and when I do cook, I want it to be good! The spices you find here are the best quality you will find around and you will not find these blends anywhere else. When the owner (Angel) says they can go anything, she means it! I usually buy a couple new bottles every other month to try something new. Every time I go in, I'm greeted warmly by a SpiceGirl. I don't think I've ever been in the shop when Angel is there but I follow her on IG (@thespicesuite). I highly recommend you do the same to know when your favorite spices are back in stock. You MUST get a bottle of one of the balsamics. A couple of drops is all you need to upgrade your salad. The pop-ups are great too! I got a pair of hand-distressed denim shorts that I always get compliments on. Overall, this place is amazing. It's a small, local business so some things may be out of stock. But I've always left the shop with a spice I loved. It's helped to get back to cooking and enjoying healthier meals. I love supporting such a high quality business! read more

I should have left this review months ago. I happened across TSS as I was walking past. The space looked quirky and inviting from the outside. I had no idea what was inside. Long story short - I went in and was honestly overwhelmed by both the hospitality and the selection. Too many choices (a great thing!) - so I decided to try the Spice Suite Signature and baybeh.. when I tell you I did a double take after I tasted it!! (You can sample!). Suffice it to say, I now know what I didn't know before - that is - that I need TSS in my life. Yeah she runs out of spices, sometimes that's just means her spices are LIT and that ya need to try something else! Be warned that there may be a bit of a wait to get into the store; it's a cute, snug store, and I'm glad they're following covid precautions! The customer service was great and I felt that the two employees there really cared about the experience I had! Was really looking forward to visiting this place on my next visit to DC. Nice size spot in a nice area lots of different and interesting spices. I bought some blends and looking forward to use it. I hate to do this, as I'm very conscious about publicly critiquing black businesses as an African American woman myself. I've supported The Spice Suite on multiple occasions and bought spices, seasonings and olive oils from Angel. The quality of the spices/oils are impeccable, however the customer service is not. Angel periodically posts spice boxes online that sell out quickly (kudos!) however, e-commerce 101 indicates that you shouldn't have items stolen from your cart while checking out. Either you A) prepare more boxes to sell or B) prevent customers from having their items removed from their shopping cart before they complete the purchase. I understand not instructing people on how to run their business, but I do understand the power of the dollar and deciding where to spend my money. My parents traveled from PG County to her shop in NW, stood in line for 1+ hours in 85 degree weather to obtain a box she advertised, only to learn that it was sold out upon getting to the front of the line. Things happen. It would have been prudent to walk up and down the line to inform potential customers of what was still available vs. what was sold out, appreciate customers for supporting the business/visiting the shop. She rudely pushed customers aside when their CashApps weren't loading quick enough (including my mother), pushed other items onto them that they didn't want -- all in a nasty and condescending tone. I hate that this will be the last time that I or my family services the Spice Suite, but we're beyond overextending ourselves to support black businesses that rudely treat us like we're less than. Our money spends like anyone else's. Angel's attitude and customer service leaves a ton to be desired. You can't sustain a business with appealing photos and severely lack customer service. It's not a sustainable or scalable model, and other reviews mention her attitude and customer service. read more

Upon entering a "spice girl" explained that we could sample any spice in a small jar. My friend and I proceeded to explore. I was curious to know more about black cardamon and asked the owner what details she knew about the spice. Her first comment was that that spice is not for sampling. *You need to work that out with yourself and your staff. The owner then completely became undone, yelling that she does not "prescribe" herbs. I firmly reminded her that I did not ask her to prescribe anything. She launched into a manic rant about learning her lesson, people wanting refunds, blah, blah, etc. She was not able to say how much any one spice cost just that the prices "ranged". After screaming about the cardamon, she proceeded to be nasty to and yell at another visitor who was inquiring about renting out her venue which is listed on the shops website. Saying that it was not available for rent and the person inquiring should "work out" a deal with one of the spice girls that works there. None of her antics made any sense. The owner is unprofessional, rude and in need to mental health evaluation with treatment. I did not patronize her business and never will. I see other comments about the owner's irrational, rude behavior. read more

I can't say enough good things about Angel and her spices. Since #DatRona kept everyone in the house, I've been cooking more. I was TIRED of it. However, I discovered the Spice Suite. I ordered two spice boxes and cooking is fun again. I like that the blends don't contain a lot of salt. Just herbs and spices with lots of flavor.
