I was missing the taste of the food from a quick spot in my hometown of Walterboro called Dairyland. Someone mentioned to me that The Sports Center here has fried chicken that tastes very close to Dairyland which has a distinctive taste. I visited and was a little disappointed that there's no fried chicken as stated however the burgers are just as amazing as Dairyland's in my hometown. If you want laidback, chill peaceful setting with great food, this place is it. My burger was not only huge but very tasty. Whenever we are in Augusta, GA, we go to The Sports Center. I had the cheeseburger plate, which includes fries, onion rings or 1/2 and 1/2. It starts at as 12 oz and even with it cut in 1/2, you can barely get your mouth around it! It was cooked perfectly, as were the fries. Located on Broad Street. I recommend parking on the center island of Broad street for safety or go with a large group. Inside decor and vibe is definitely an Augusta landmark where many locals go for their hamburgers. The inside is definitely dated and needs cleaning, but for cheap beer and cheap hamburgers, you can't complain. This dive sports bar and restaurant is known for its $5 hamburger/cheeseburger. Wednesday night has cheap beer but is usually crowded and the food takes a long time to come out. Our server Amanda was kind and talkative on a slow night. I recommend the hamburger with everything on it. Make sure to ask for fries or onion rings with no salt, because they can be very salty. I also recommend the chili cheese fries. As much as I wanted to love this place I couldn't. Not because it is a dive and, yes it is a dive, but because the food takes way too long to be served! I get it, there is one cook, the hamburger patties are homemade but the waiting was stupid-crazy by the time you get your burger you'd eat anything and think it's great! Omg somehow they make divey seem like the best thing since sliced bread!! Giant draft beers for $2.50, fresh never frozen extremely juicy burgers for less than $5, and hand battered fresh onion rings!? What else could you want?!? Do I expect subpar service at a dive? Yes. 100%. Do I expect greasy, sometimes questionable, food? Yes. 100%. That's a dive. And Sports Center fits that criteria 100%. Was horrible the whole time I was there i felt so out of place it took about 10 mins till i was Acknowledged but when I was it was the girl cleaning the bathrooms no on was washing there hands and was touching so many different things and cross contaminating all the food. I had a burger as well as my husband and it was good but was suppose to come with fries and slaw on the menu and they charged us separately for the fries and didn't even get the slaw... and we had a coke and when we asked for a refill they charged us for four separate cokes! Surprisingly delightful and wonderfully delicious. Ordered the cheeseburger and onion rings and they were both far more impressive than they had any right to be. The prices were amazing! $4.25 a burger with lots of flavor and it was huge! The onion rings were absolutely great with the spicy mustard. To have been in a city for 7 years and live within walking distance for 2 years makes what I am about to say a travesty. This is my first visit to the Sports Center. I am fortunate enough to have good friends though who say "hey, you need to try this place" so many times that I actually listen. And just a few days ago, there I sat. Now you can describe this place as a "dive" or "hometown place", but just know that it is a down-to-earth burger joint. The patties are made by hand, the griddle is right there behind the bar if you want to watch your meal cooked, and the waitress's tell you like it is (but in a nice way). I went with a cheeseburger and onion rings, based on a recommendation. As par for my first visit policy, I took the burger "as is". I did not regret that. Delicious doesn't even begin to describe it all. The beer selection is minimal, but you don't come here expecting a growler bar. You come expecting a good meal for a great price. I had my meal and two beers for just over $15! You can't beat that. Another friend had a loaded hotdog and that is on my "must try " list now. I do wish they had desserts, but when you've been a mainstay in downtown for so long you know what you do and you do it well. *Insider's Tip -Wednesday night is steak and pork chop night. The Legendary Boomer Daniel (AKA Disco Danny) and I visited last night. It was my first time. I am 61 years old and I discovered that I have missed out eating at an iconic restaurant. This place was absolutely incredible. After a very bad trip to Luigi's and ending up leaving there because I waited 15 minutes for my food, I left and actually came across this place. I thought why not and went right in. The interior and items on the wall gave the place wonderful taste. The music in this place fit the place absolutely well. Fantastic large double patty, juicy cheeseburger for $4.25 + at least 24 oz. of Killian's (aka NOT Bud/Miller Light) for $2.25. all prices TAX INCLUDED. Good food and good beer at good prices, what more can one ask for? Well taking credit/debit cards would be nice. Also, the whole place kinda looks you've stepped back into the '80s but that's somewhat endearing. Not to mention you will have a food smell on your clothes for the rest of the day.
