Their cakes can be very good, but look: they make so many nothing gets sold out very fast it seems, so beware stale cake slices!
    Mike W.

The Station Bakery & Café was moved a couple years ago from their original location in High Springs' actual railway depot to a new building on US 441. Apparently there were issues with the rent the owner of the depot wanted so the folks behind the Station--and elderly couple and their daughter--bought this new property outright and moved. I understand their motives, but it's something of a shame because the old depot was great for this train-themed restaurant whereas their new quarters seem impersonal. I'm not sure what this building served as before, but some sort of retail store--maybe auto parts or such. Maybe a restaurant before, though in any case the owners have put a good effort into remodeling it to suit them but it just seems . . . generic. Certainly not as fun as the old depot. The sandwiches are pretty typical but decent portions and the owners are very nice people. The father was a candy-maker before he retired to Florida from New York he's said, and he still makes old-fashioned pralines and other candies for the Station and the pralines rock. They also have ice cream and home-made cakes--many, many, varieties of cakes. I've found the cakes overall to be overwrought--just too much buttercream icing, too sweet. And because they are huge cakes, they often sit there a while and you may get a piece that's a bit stale. I mean, they have normally five or more huge cakes--chocolate, carrot cake, lemon and who knows what else. There are like at least two other good bakeries in High Springs so I don't think the demand for all these cakes is constantly high and they don't tend to sell out the day they were made, if you get my drift. The key lime cookies, when they have them, are very good though and the lemon cake isn't bad when fresh. Once alas there was a pineapple cake which was an abomination, however. If you come for lunch, I'd suggest the Cuban sandwich, reuben, or BLT. I've never tried their ice cream and I don't know where they get it from. I hope they don't make it: they seem overworked for a retired couple as it is. I wish I could give more than three stars because these folks are so darn nice, but I think three reflects the food fairly (aside from the pralines which are five-stars for sure).

The eclairs are amazing. Service is slow, but when you consider that the owners are working the front and back and they are a lil older, totally worth the wait. Roast beef melt was great. Will definitely be back.

I eat here 3 or 4 times a year. The owners are really friendly and have been in High Springs a long time. The desserts are really good and they have ice cream. The sandwiches are very tasty, they use all fresh ingredients and high quality meats & veggies. They make everything from scratch and the meat is not pre-sliced. Come here if you have some time for lunch though. They are a little pricey and take their time.... I guess both are the price for fresh.

Wonderful bakery! Down home baking. Felt a little bad for older owners trying to take it all on theirselves but they did a great job.

Came by recently with a part of nine. They don't take reservations less than two hours in advance,…read moreso we had to join the waiting list. We were afraid with the live music that it might be up to an hour wait (we were told). In point of fact, we got seated maybe five minutes after we arrived. (They indicated at that time that it was actually a longer wait for indoors than outdoors despite decent weather.) I split the Baked River Mushroom appetizer with my wife. We had expected stuffed mushroom caps of some sort; but what it actually is is chopped mushrooms and vegetables in a dressing (brown butter sage and balsamic reduction) served with thick dark bread as a platform. Pretty good. I also had a bit of the Spinach Artichoke dip (good) and the Gator Bites (which have quite a bit of fried onion mixed in with the gator) (quite good.) For an entree, I had the Duke's Macaroni with Blackened Chicken (which they mixed in.) Quite delicious, but it did leave quite a lot of oil (over a tablespoon) in the plate. It was a very large portion. We had dessert plans elsewhere, so skipped their rather large dessert options. Our server was outstanding, friendly, taking care of everything. Except for the very long wait between ordering and getting our first appetizers and soups. (Not such a wait before the entrees came.) 20% gratuity added for parties of eight or more.

Great FOOD. Good service from Jules…read more We had Nachos for an appetizer. We had the Salmon was good but a little dry. Burgers where good. All Good here.

Entering it kind of reminds you of a farmhouse, I guess. Pretty standard furnishings and decoration for a country diner sort of place. Of course, we were there for breakfast, so the standard diner breakfast was on the menu. The full menu consists of burgers, sandwiches, and a couple of barbecue dishes. If there were more screens mounted on the walls I would call it a sportsbar, but that isn't the case. Our orders were taken, and I had gone for eggs, hashbrowns, and corned beef because it was St Patty's Day. Realistically one of the few times that I have legitimately had food that was appropriate for the holiday. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time for a group of ten, so the kitchen and staff knew what they were doing. The food was fine... nothing to really shout out about, but also not bad. It was what I expected it to be, and that was good enough.

1906 Farmhouse 25405 W Newberry Rd, Newberry, FL 32669…read more ***SWILL ALERT*** Pulling up to the hitchin' post at the 1906 Farmhouse, all seemed well and fine. I don't mind themed restaurants (they can be fun). This place was designed to model the Farmhouse where the ranch hands gathered for meals before and after a long day of riding. I dug it. It gave off a warm, welcoming, one-of-the-family vibe. Kasey was my server for the meal and she was frowning before I asked one question. I placed an order for one Country Fried Steak with sides of Collard Greens and Mac & Cheese, along with some Strawberry Shortcake to round out the meal. I soon saw Cantankerous Kasey begrudgingly returning with my victuals. I don't understand this attitude. Am I supposed to be grateful she deigned to work here? Anyway, if any of you are curious like me, you may have often wondered what it was like to spend a day in jail. To that end, I admit, I got myself hauled off to the County Hoosegow. Wanting to make the most out of my tax dollars, I booked my stay to include lunch. The dry bologna sandwich you receive, along with the juice bag to wash it down, is something you try to forget. As I looked at the slop my trustee, Kasey, placed before me, I began to long for the county jail government issue bologna. The Country Fried Steak was fresh from the freezer and cooked with the precision of Stevie Wonder passing his behind-the-wheel driving test. I've been hit with hockey pucks softer than this garbage. The gravy was made in the Sysco factory and this had to be their bottom-grade slush. It was as tasty as flour and water. Wait. The sides were a step down from the entree, if that is possible. Just look at the pictures and tell me, does anything look appetizing? While I am not one to ever judge a book by its cover, as looks can be deceiving. In this case, they are not, and the adage 'a picture speaks a thousand words' is spot on. The Collard Greens were obviously from an industrial can. Hey, don't get me wrong, all restaurants use a food service, but you don't have to be cheap about it and try to finagle the dining population by using the lowest quality they have to offer. The Mac & Cheese looked more like something a dog regurgitated than actual food. It was dry and pasty on the palate--just the way it is not supposed to be. The Strawberry Shortcake is also food service, not unlike the stuff you got in high school, only worse. Kudos, 1906 Farmhouse, you officially serve Swill sans the fly. At least on this visit. The Big Boy says, "I wouldn't serve this SWILL to a dead dog."
