They had so many handmade goods: scented soaps shaped like trees and pinecones, saches with pine needles, a variety of homemade soups, pies, and so much more! We bought a little bit of everything. The owners were so warm and friendly. On our way out, we realized we were in need of half and half for our morning coffee. The owner gave us a small container - on the house! We will definitely stop by again and often. This was a true gem. Wish we had discovered sooner.

The produce is fantastic and is monitored by the amazing and friendly produce manager, George. The facility is clean; the employees are helpful. This year some new front end associates came in; AJ, Nate, Juan, and a sweet girl who's nametag I can never see.... They are so well trained, and so kind. The experience is enjoyable each and every time I go in.

I'm reviewing Charlie John's as a Bookstore-Café. Because there's one little table in the back by the deli, and we had (seriously) a delightful time there after a few dozen banal visits for groceries and supplies. First off, the made to order sandwiches -- we got egg salad and tuna salad -- are quite good. The Broccoli salad was as good a one as I've ever had, although I suspect that was because there were little bits of ham in it we didn't notice until after we started eating it (we are not dogmatic vegetarians, and occasionally fall off the wagon anyway). The deli staff were extremely pleasant, and I don't mean this as a knock on any particular establishment, but during the busy summer season that really stands out among other more harried employees of some businesses I shan't mention. And then we had the added pleasure of being able to talk directly to a half dozen patrons, as we were blocking the access to pork roll, ground turkey, and littleneck clams from our perch at the sole table. Second: the bookstore. CJ's has a half a row of books in the camping section, plus another stub for maps and guidebooks, and honestly, I think I've been in every bookstore in the ADK, I think this has the best-curated books of local interest. They have some truly small-press low-print-run titles here, from a biography of Nick Stoner to a history of the Moose Plains Wilderness. It's fun just to browse and while you can't buy everything, we always make it a point to buy something. That's when it occurred to me: we were having as enjoyable a time as we have at bookstore cafés. I mean, this sure beats Barnes and Noble. So having not bothered to review Charlie John's before -- what else is there to say about the best small grocery store in the ADK that hasn't been said in other reviews -- and convey to you that you now have a secret rainy day destination. That is the Charlie John's Bookstore Café.

It is a small store with lots of country decor plus more. Tea towels, jars of sauces, jams, a dog section, indoor or outdoor decor and the list of what you can buy goes on. We chose the in-house deli for lunch. I was more than pleased with the choice. (I saw a gentleman's sandwich and decided from there.) The deli uses Boar's Head deli meats. I got the reuben which is put together a bit differently, but that difference is what made the sandwich. They toast the bread, warm the ingredients and then put the sammy together. No greasy mess of a sandwich falling apart. It was juicy, delicious and satisfying. My only complaint is that they do not offer chips or pickles as a side with the sandwich. You can buy a bag of chips, but no pickle. Small town. There's a refrigerator with beverages and take out meals. We had a grand 'ol time driving up and back. Saw the sites that we could see. Parking is OK for the size of the place. All the staff were helpful and friendly. They have smallish shopping carts, but it seemed like most people start their collection of goodies and leave them by the register. They also have a brunch on weekends. Give it a try, enjoy the shopping, enjoy a little something from the deli.

The atmosphere feels extremely hostile if you're not part of her inner circle or if you don't have money to spend. Locals know how people are treated behind the scenes, which is why many of the customers seem to come from out of town. The owner has a reputation for tearing down other small businesses instead of supporting them, and constantly copies ideas from others rather than creating anything original. Competition clearly isn't handled professionally here. Beyond that, cleanliness was a major concern. I personally noticed signs of mice and roaches in the store, which made me very uncomfortable shopping there. Some products are nice, but many can be purchased directly from the original vendors instead. Small towns thrive when businesses support each other and treat people with respect. Unfortunately, that is not the experience here.
