I live in Chicago, but I would go to Windsor about twice a month to visit my wife (girlfriend at the time). My wife and I would go to Sushi California first before any other restaurant. It was honestly the our favorite sushi spot even comparing it at some good places in Chicago. We went there for about 2 years straight. My wife and I went to Windsor in June of 2016 and we couldn't wait to get the spicy seafood miso soup and the sushi rolls. When we got the food, the miso was awful. I didn't say anything cuz I thought it was just me. I looked around and everyone's face looked weird and I knew then it was the food. We thought it's just the soup. When we got the sushi (after one hour), it probably the worst sushi I ever had. It was literally worst than supermarket grade sushi. The fish and the vegetables were old. The tempura tasted like old bread crumbs. It was very disappointing. It was the worst sushi experience ever knowing what kind of sushi I used to get from California Sushi. I think something has changed in this place. I don't know if the chef changed or the owner changed, but you don't serve that kind of fish to people. This can send you to a hospital and make you spend some time there. I personally would never step a foot in this place. I hope they come back to their senses and make it great again for future customers, but even then I would not go there again. read more

Sushi California lacks the cheaper options that Hikari has (lunch specials, etc) but the fish is always flavourful and the rolls are carefully crafted to showcase it without overwhelming it. Not busy at all when we walked in but we waited 45 minutes for our soup to come and for our drinks. I honestly don't understand what's up with all of these negative reviews. Sushi California is the BEST sushi restaurant in Windsor. In my opinion, it trumps over the lack-lustre sushi places that are up and coming because they're all-you-can-eat (and they are such because they lack in quality). Every experience I have had with this restaurant had been a positive one. The staff is always really friendly, and every time I have been there, the food is quick to come out! My favourite roll on the menu is the yam caterpillar (I can't remember it's exact name, but it has tempura yam on the inside, and avocado on the top). It's so good! I will keep choosing SC over any of the other sushi restaurants as quality beats quantity out, tenfold. read more

We went to this restaurant on a date crossing the border to do so. We live on the Detroit side. Based on other's reviews I thought I would be experiencing top sushi quality and while I wasn't entirely disappointed, I was underwhelmed. My main problem with this restaurant was the service. We were in this restaurant for somewhere close to 2 hours, and that wasn't from them being busy. The server didn't come to our table for a good 25 minutes after being seated and seeing her for any orders or drink refills was very very far and few in between. The restaurant was not even at half capacity so I am not sure how this was justified. The sushi itself was good, but not $70 good. We ordered the 30 piece sushi/sashimi plate for 2. It came with an assortment of chef picked rolls and sashimi. The plate came with one roll. The roll was very good, no complaints there. However, rolls are easier to make delicious than sashimi. The sashimi was of the quality I would expect at a much more inexpensive restaurant. Also, fake crab meat sushi is not the level of quality I was expecting. read more

The tea is delicious and neverending. The waitress is adorable and very very polite. The atmosphere is comfortable and authentic looking. And, to top it off, their desserts are all fantastic. Came here for lunch because I saw the high ratings on Yelp. I ordered the lunch sashimi which had 12 pieces but the selection was really limited. It only had Salmon, White tuna and another white fish so mostly I got salmon. It didn't taste fresh (kind of bland and had no fish taste). The rice was served separately and it wasn't flavoured sushi rice, also it was a little under-cooked. It was a little underwhelming but I guess I can't expect too much for a small town like Windsor.
