Worst taco experience I have ever had. I wanted a taco with beans and rice because I cannot have cheese or meat due to dietary restriction. Since this wasn't exactly on the menu they denied me and had a lot of attitude like I was being judged for not being able to eat these ingredients. Though I did not get anything my friend did. She ordered " green chilli chicken tacos" that had 0 green chili and were 90% cabbage and 10% chicken (extremely dry and unflavored). I asked for green sauce and they said they would have to charge me another dollar despite the food already being overpriced and offered me expired gross looking free hot sauce. Stopped in for lunch on the weekend while hanging in Government Camp. Based on the reviews, we tempered our expectations going in. We had a large party and grabbed a couple tables. After looking at the menu, we weren't quite sure whether there was table service or not so we placed our order at the register. Ordering was a challenge as the staff had trouble understanding how to take the orders - I believe the system didn't allow for any deviation from the exact menu items. Cost was slightly elevated for being on the mountain, but in general it was fair. Ambiance was rather dark and lacking in Mexican music. After about 10 minutes our food was ready. Order got slightly messed up but it was addressed, and the similar foods that we ordered were not consistent in what we got. But the portions were pretty large and it tasted decent. Government Camp isn't exactly known for its killer cuisine options, so you tend to treat new-to-you lunch places here with some suspicion. Taco Shoppe has been around for awhile but I just tried it for the first time and... it wasn't bad. It wasn't great either, and the ambiance feels a little shabby, like a basement with windows, but the mahi mahi taco special I got was a solid hit; good portions, flaky fish, and slathered in a nice mango salsa that brought a subtle heat. Like I said, the place feels less than inviting on first glance, and the beer selection is fairly slim, but i have to say the counterperson was super friendly and very helpful. If you want to pay 40 dollars for two meals that taste like mush and white people cuisine, come here! The guy at the register couldn't even explain the menu items. I wanted CARNITA TACOS, you know corn tortillas with cilantro and onions. I saw an option for crispy corn tortillas, and so I asked if they were just corn tortillas fried in a little oil. He had no clue. He asked the cook in the back (also white with long a hair and no hair net/hair tie at all). I told the teller I specifically did not want hard shell tacos. So once the teller came back he said "yeah not hard shells, they're made in house".. So 10 minutes later they came out with three hard shell tacos with only (pre shredded) cheese and lettuce on them. I don't think it ever occurred to the cook that using spices on the meat would make the food taste good. I also don't think it ever occurred to the cook that he should taste his food. They brought out the saddest portion of beans and rice that didn't have even a grain of salt added to them. The beans were cold and mushy with absolutely no spice. The salsa did no favor either, it was thick tomato water at best. HORRIBLE. Horrible. horrible. I could not eat more than a few bites before I was actually repulsed. When I told the teller I didn't really get what I wanted he actually acted annoyed, and said "it was a miscommunication". He was probably so high he couldn't even register I specifically asked to not be served hard shell premade tortilla shells! Then as I sat waiting to leave I saw the "cook" prepping lettuce by peeling off rotting leaves, and wiping his hands all over his pants before chopping the lettuce. Don't you just hate it when you pay good money for food, only to be completely disappointed and let feeling ripped off! We have been wanting to come to this restaurant for a while. Finally found the opportunity. We bought two burritos to go. Got home and cut mine in half only to find it burnt on one side. I could smell the burnt smell as soon as I cut through the foil. Not to mention the flavor of the meat was terrible and the rice and beans inside were dry. I tried to salvage it by adding some cheese to mine. But the wasn't anything salvaging this mess. Even though this place had mixed reviews, we decided to give it a shot. I wish we hadn't. Unfortunately the food was really bad. In addition, they charged us 20% for a "to go" order when we picked up which we were unaware of and then asked for an additional tip on top of that. I encourage this business to be transparent and let clients know about this "to go" charge up front when they place their order on the phone, since this is not customary and took us by surprise. Thoroughly enjoyed a hearty post hike Mexican binge here. Super friendly and fast service with extremely casual ambiance. The tacos of the day: cauliflower: were spicy and tasty and cooked perfectly to maintain some crunch. We liked them better than the well seasoned mahi mahi tacos. The tamales were a bit dry on day one, but were amazing as leftovers!! We had so much food that made a great breakfast on day 2. Definitely get the chips, guacamole and salsa. So good, so spicy! I hate making bad reviews, I can almost always find something to smile about, but in this situation (one of the strangest in my yelp life), I didn't even get a chance to find anything to smile about. The scene: 3pm on a Sunday. Driving through town, Charlie's was packed and I wasn't in the mood for a burger, Glacier House was packed, so we went to the Taco Shoppe. The place was completely empty, which did give me pause, but I justified it based on time of day. Here's where it got weird- The older women behind the counter was really angry. I asked for a modification to nachos (beans on the side) and she gave me all kinds of grief about how the cook was going to "love me" and if I asked for any other modifications the answer would just be "NO". I thought she was joking and tried to banter a little bit saying that I'm actually not picky and I'll eat whatever she brings to the table. She got really hostile and told me she would bring me "exactly what I asked for". She was giving me "Please leave vibes" but didn't say it, so we opted not to stay. As we left she followed us our an yelled "your leaving without paying?" Which we were, based on her obvious desire to not serve us, but we also hadn't even finished ordering, it's not like we dined and dashed. Eating in Govy: 1. Don't stop and eat in Govy if you don't want to pay the "premium" as the prices in town are inflated because they're secluded and it takes more to get food up the mountain. (Even gas prices are about 50cents more than going out of town.) 2. Built into The Taco Shoppe price is a 20% gratuity. This is posted by their order window. All Govy businesses are having trouble getting people to work in town and especially at restaurants so they need to charge more to their customers to get employees to work for them and to stay afloat during these hard times. 3. Outside dining is available and that's it. It's COVID and their community is more "transient" than most small mountain towns. They're doing their best to take precautions for their staff so they can stay open in the long run. 4. Welcome to tourist town! They got you! Where else are you going to go? The gas is expensive. All restaurants are expensive. Housing is expensive. If you don't expect to pay, eat in Sandy or Hood River before making your trek uphill. About this restaurant - The Taco Shoppe: 1. This is the only "Mexican" in town. Is the flavor authentic? Probably not but it's tacos and burritos and enchiladas and stuff, what else are they supposed to say to classify this restaurant? 2. The staff seemed fine enough to me (considering other reviews). We were in town for ski camp and will be back in town again in a couple of weeks for another ski camp. I plan on returning to get their ground beef tacos (I had their fish tacos which were a little spicy in my opinion but I'm a spicy-wuss, and it did say "blackened" on the menu). 3. We were there at opening and there wasn't a wait. But I have been to 3 other restaurants in town and have had extremely long waits depending on the time of day. Again, everything in Govy is currently short staffed! 4. The bonus of ordering at The Taco Shoppe to-go window is everything is boxed. Tastes better than Taco Bell but not by much. We ordered the kids bean and cheese burrito. It was huge but rather flavorless. We also got the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. It was fine. The enchiladas were flavorful, but the rice was undercooked and the beans could have used some salt (and I never say that). We also got the New Mexican smothered burrito which was... food. I was recommended this place and had to see the inside. As I enter I am greeted by the gentleman at the counter who is busy but still acknowledged me with a big smile. In that time the I say I'm just checking out and explain why. Shortly here comes the lady and she says what can I help you with and I explain the situation and we joke about it. Great laugh then I mentioned I just ate and have my dog so I cannot sit down, she reply's "well next time bring your dog we would love to have you." Very good, I love the tacos I usually grab a few before heading to the campground because I don't want to cook the first day of camp

Interior was typical of a mountain resort town restaurant: lots of character. There were two people working for dinner (1 cook and 1 Everybody Else) when we went in. We were 1 of 3 parties. You order first and then sit down and your meals are delivered to your table. You do pay for chips and salsa but they agreed to give chip refills for no extra cost. Many vegan options. The cook and waitress/host/cashier were very experienced and quick. The waitress was friendly enough that we did leave a tip. Unfortunately, you pay first so you hope for good table service. The food was good. Portions were large. Vegetables were fresh. Sauces and tofu were flavorful. I can't put my finger on why I rated this only a three - might have something to do with the staff attitude combined with they were really the only vegan place in town. I LOVE The Taco Shoppe at Govy Camp! Their steak soft tacos are so tasty. LOVE THEIR SALSAS!!! We live nearby so I "treat myself" frequently to a delicious meal here. Their margaritas are also delicious. I love their pinto beans side (I always add cheese to them) and their staff are so friendly & kind. If you're in the mood for nachos, get them FULLY LOADED and I promise you'll be glad you did. I see reviews complaining about high prices but I totally disagree. Govy is a resort town folks. It takes much more effort ($) to get supplies to restaurants on the mountain, so please take that into consideration. Stopped here for a meal and drinks a couple of times while we stayed at a nearby lodge . I ordered the tamale for food which is served on some rice , with a side order of chips and salsa. Note:The chips you have to order on your own if you want them;) The tamale was a good size, a bit spicy tho . It's served with a lot salsa on top of it and some cheese. An amazing place in Government Camp that the current rating doesn't do justice. I came with my wife to grab a drink and some to go food for the kids and we will definitely be back. We started with the guacamole and chips and my wife had the wet tamale and I had the red and green chicken burrito. Amazing flavor and creeping spice along with the best value on the mountain. Let me start by saying that we never even tried the food because of the bad reviews and not wanting to waste money on a bad meal. Alas, most other restaurants were closed due to snow so we had no choice. We walked in, UNKNOWINGLY, a few minutes after closing (doors to the restaurant were unlocked). We were greeted with the utmost disrespect when we asked if they were still open. Any other restaurant owner would have politely told us that they were closed for the afternoon, but not this one. We apologized and said we'd excuse ourselves - her response was to "go read sign on on our way out" and rolled her eyes. Wow... we left in complete shock. We went to the Taco Shoppe because the Ratskellar was packed and the ordering line wasn't moving. The Taco Shoppe on the other hand was basically empty. When we walked in there was only one person sitting at the bar. The first thing we noticed was the smell. It smelt musty in there. My 3 year old niece even plugged her nose with her hand. It was obvious to everyone else how much my wife and I love Tacos. So when we drove past The Taco Shoppe and both my Wife and I in unison, like kids at the fair, yelled out "The Taco Shoppe" it was obvious what we wanted for lunch. Street Parking is your only option but they had park spots right in front. They have outside seating but it was a bit nippy outside and we sat at a booth inside. The booths sre a bit cramped but we were ok. lots of accidental foot games with my Bro though. The server took our order pretty fast and brought us our cocktails quickly but our food took a while. (It wasn't busy either but I have my personal reservations on the subject.) That was ok. We enjoyed talking and getting College Football Highlights they have 4 or 5 TVs, all on. A little distracting for us, but again, it was ok. Our food finally came I feel the food is overpriced but didn't complain. My wife got a Tostada Salad and it was huge. They put the shell on the bottom and by the time you get to it, it's soggy. I had the Taco Platter. 3 Chicken Tacos on Hard Shell with rice and beans. Literally 3 Regular Tacos with a small cup of Mixed Rice and Beans. Tacos were decent and looked nice but at $10.00 it was overpriced. Still delicious. The Chicken was moist and tender. The rice and pinto bean mix had a citrus and green chili flavor to them. I could have eaten more of it for sure. But I only hot a soup cups worth. Luckily my Wife could have never eaten the amount of food they brought her. So I helped her eat it. I almost gave T.T.S. 4 Stars just because of their awesome Hot Sauce collection they have for guests but I obviously didn't. My Wife and her friends will be in the area in the next couple weeks.
