Namaste is AMAZING! We've had Indian food in Los Angeles, New York and overseas, and this place has got to be in the top 3. They spice their curries beautifully in an authentic home cooked way. You also know they're cooking method is good when you don't walk away feeling heavy like other Indian restaurants tend make you feel. You can't get great Indian cooking like this anywhere; this place is a gem. One thing - it would be good to have a lunch menu as well for more casual diners. I don't go through this area often, but when I do from now on, I will be stopping here for a meal. The meal and experience here were outstanding. The outdoor ambiance was a little sketchy upon arrival and the decor inside isn't special, but OMG does the food and service make up for it. It seems to be a family-run place. The server was great and talked to us about the spice level we wanted and answered our questions about the food after we had eaten. Even the chef came out and asked if all was to our liking. Everything was outstanding. We ordered an appetizer of tofu, which was surprising to see on an Indian menu, but we love tofu, so we tried it. Amazing. My family of four devoured it in minutes. We ordered three main dishes to share. All were great and the spice level was done perfectly. We had a little bit of leftovers which we turned into another meal at home. read more

This place needs a major disclaimer posted somewhere, or maybe a less inviting look to the restaurant. They clearly are not prepared, or don't want dine in customers. We were able to make a reservation for 10 people and upon arrival, that ambiance seemed promising. It all went downhill from there. We stood at the hostess stand for longer than usual with no one in sight. The restaurant was almost completely empty other than a group waiting for a take out order. Finally, someone came and sat us. She barely said a word other than to tell us it was required that we order with our phones. She completely disappeared and we saw her only two more times the rest of the hour and a half we were there. After ordering and waiting for our food for about 45 minutes, we thought about leaving, but with our group size and having no reservation elsewhere, decided to stick it out. Our food finally came out. The server didn't say but 3 words and sat all of our food at the end of the table and left. The food was decent, maybe a 3.5/5. I ordered mild everything since we had several children in the group. Everything was on the spicy side (fine for adults), not what I ordered. While we were there, two other groups sat down and quickly left. Again, had we been given some sort of disclaimer to dine in at our own risk, I'd probably not write such a scathing review. Finding Taj was like finding a culinary oasis when we were struggling to find merely "good." To be fair to Taj, they were very up front about their staffing issues, so we sat down knowing that we'd be waiting for a bit (which we did). But our server--who scrambled to keep up with remarkable grace--was friendly and helpful and worked hard to make our dining experience a good one. The food was delicious. We've eaten a lot of Indian food around the world, and Taj was on-point with their vegetarian dishes. We both opted for "mild," knowing that mild in some restaurants is scorching in others, and at Taj the "mild" was pleasantly spicy and awakening without burning any holes. Nestled in a private building off the main street you pull up to The Taj which is hidden with some beautiful pine trees, the moment you open the front door you'r transported via the orient express to Bombay India. Let's get right into it, I arrived at 5:00 pm and it was busy, the wait staff was professional pleasant and had a firm understanding of all the items on the menu. The food was outstanding the butter chicken was some of the best I've ever had the lamb kabobs were Delicious full of flavor & not overpowering. The naan bread was offensively delicious I could not stop eating it I recommend you do not have the naan bread because you may form a habit with it. Overall a wonderful experience to find such high-quality Indian food in a local marketplace. My family and I highly recommend. During Spring break, my family of four was looking for somewhere open for dinner on Easter. We lucked into choosing The Taj! They are under new ownership and everything from the food to the service was fantastic. The new owner came around to all the tables to check on how guests were enjoying their meal. He even brought by the spices that go into a traditional Chai tea which was cool to show my children. this is the second bad review I am giving the TAJ. I don't understand what has happened. I just received a Door Dash order and for the second time I'm goind "what the heck?" I ordered butter chicken but received some kind of chicken drumsticks. I also ordered samosas - but there was no mint chutney.so actually quite boring. I'm so disappointed. Visited on a Friday afternoon, and the restaurant was pretty quiet... but that has to be because the locals don't know how good this food is! We were seated immediately, and the waitress was really helpful in deacribing some options for my wife (who cannot tolerate any spiciness). Food came out quickly and was absolutely perfect! I've never had more-tender lamb (in the Lamb Curry) and the Tikka Masala was exactly perfect for my wife. We tried both the regular and garlic naan, and preferred the garlic - but both were top tier. Was doing a quick drive to Vegas from Park City. UT. Cedar City is always our stopping point for a meal and we try and find new places when we go. This was our first trip to The Taj. We were there on a Tuesday, around 11:30 am in mid November. At first we almost moved on but after we ate we were glad we did not do so. The parking lot and restaurant were empty but the owner explained that most of their business came in the evening. We had the Chicken Biryani, Lamb Sheek Kababs, the Chili Cheese Naan and Mango Lassis. The food was excellent and the owner, server and chef was incredibly friendly and contentious. What an absolute treat! It's hard to find really exceptional Indian food anywhere, let alone in a small mountain town in Southern Utah, but, here we are! The Chef that owns and operated this place is a remarkable person. Chef Vijay Deokar started cooking at the young age of 14 when he bought his first car and traveled around India learning how to cook. He's worked for five star restaurants, cruise ships as well as a variety of other well established restaurants and he brings his expertise and knowledge to this small corner of Utah with skill and enthusiasm. If you don't try this restaurant, you have certainly missed out on an opportunity of a lifetime! Yea, it's really THAT good. Today, was my first time here and the variety of items is really quite impressive. I'm definitely going to have to come back. So, for lunch today I chose the Kashmiri Lamb Curry with Garlic naan and a Mango Lassi. The Mango lassi is similar in texture and thickness to a milk shake but not as heavy as it is a yogurt based drink. It carries the flavors of the mango very well and the flavors just pop on your tongue. It's a wonderful drink to start off any meal. The Kashmiri Lamb Curry is something to behold. The sauce is made from scratch with tomatoes, garlic, onions and a variety of spices. The levels of complexity for this sauce is hard to describe. The flavors simply dance on your tongue. The lamb is cooked to perfection. It's fork tender, flavorful, supple and just the right amount of bite to it. It's not too firm and not too mushy. It holds up very well in the sauce and poured over the jasmine rice the flavors work wonders. Honestly, I haven't had Lamb this good since my visit to Kiev, Ukraine! The restaurant itself is massive. Lots of space, several different rooms, an outdoor patio and a bar. Sadly, today, I was the only person eating in the restaurant until I was nearly done eating. I certainly hope that this place continues to be successful because the husband and wife really take pride in their business and their food. They are kind, attentive and very intelligent. Talking to Chef Vijay is a real treat as well. I look forward to coming back and hopefully, with a little luck, Chef Vijay will allow me to watch him cook as he prepares my meal. If you like Indian cuisine then you'll love this place. If you've ever thought about trying Indian food, I couldn't think of a better place to start than here. The Taj is indeed a little slice of heaven in the middle of the wilderness. Don't miss this exceptional restaurant. read more

Wonderful! We are visiting Utah for the first time and decided to try this establishment. All reviews we read were positive. We have just returned from a delicious homemade meal and the reviews were spot on. Fantastic. The lamb vindaloo with rice and accompanying garlic Naan bread was delicious. The portions were large so expect to take some home with you. It's a basic quaint place with no frills, but the food speaks for itself. We were travelling through Cedar city wanting to eat Indian food, searched on google and found this place. The inside and outside ambience was refreshing and bright. The staff here were friendly. We ordered Chicken tikka masala, Butter Paneer and some breads. Our family loved it and even after few weeks we still talk about this place. We made reservations on a Friday night at 5:30. We were the first customers there. We were seated and they took a few minutes to come to our table and brought us water. I thought they were going to bring us menu's, but didn't right away. I finally asked for menus and they only brought us 2 when there were 4 of us. My husband went to the bathroom and noticed water all over the floor. Then my son went and noticed brown stuff smeared on the toilet seat. My son's girlfriend also went to the restroom, and said no toilet paper and bathroom was not clean. When my family told me this when they came out of the restrooms, we decided to leave. If they can't keep their restrooms clean, I can't imagine what their kitchen is like. This is the 2nd time I tried to go to dinner there in the past year and we were with other people and we also walked out then because they didn't have menus and service was poor. They only came by to get my order, drop food off, and bring me the check. 2. My food came out cold. The rice was most definitely left out to dry before being served. Received the Naan at the END of the meal. I didn't want to wait for it just to eat cold food. Naan wasn't even worth it to be honest. I know Cedar is considered "small" but I've been to tons of smaller restaurants with great food and great service. Please do not come here if you feeling Indian food. Chef Vijay was so good to us. We stopped for lunch and he came out to our table and went above and beyond describing not only the flavors of each dish but where it came from in India as well as the history behind several of the dishes. I never knew that Butter Chicken is a creamier, butterier version of chicken Korma that was made for an English Lieutenant during the occupation. So cool!! Traveling through cedar city - had a hankering for Indian food. Usually we find ourselves within the walls of a festive naan-serving establishment 2-3 times a month. Having never been to this location we thought we would give it a try. It was around 45° outside when we stopped, and strangely they had the front door propped open. When we entered the hostess asked how many, we responded with the obvious "2". She said "the Buffet is open, if you want to order from the menu it will take some time". Now, I appreciate the honesty. But this information was definitely provided to push us towards the Buffet. She offered to let us inspect the Buffet, which we did. It did not look appetizing and I loathe buffets so we told her we would order off the menu, we were not in a rush. (Had to get up and shut the door - as it was as cold inside as outside. How can management be so unaware?) Soda arrived in a can (why anyone would avoid employing a soda fountain is beyond me) I asked our server several somewhat basic questions regarding Indian cuisine relating to their menu. Each time I asked a question I was told "I really don't know". Which would be fine if that was followed up with "but let me ask". No such luck Since we could not get any sort of answers from the server we thought we had no choice but to visit the Buffet or simply leave. We should have left Well-the food was as good as it looked. Which was poor. No naan on the buffet - had to ask for it to be refilled. What we got appeared to be a pita. Did not look like any naan I've had before. Had no char, no flavor, just blah. Perhaps naan is regional - if so, I'll have to investigate and make sure I never visit that area in my travels. The entree dishes were either watery (the curry) or so thick it held form once on the plate. The vegetables were all overcooked and mushy. The vegetable samosas were dry pucks. And about that curry- the chicken was dry and hard as (set) concrete. Can't think of a less delightful protein than overcooked poultry cubes. The "salad" bar portion of the buffet was the most edible selections made. Yet far from special. Iceberg lettuce, 3 out of the bottle dressings, you get the idea. More annoying than bad food from a buffet is a buffet that had ZERO labeling. ZERO. How in the world can one fill a plate with what's wanted if there's nothing to indicate what is being served? Unfortunately - the meal was gross. Not sure how in the world they have 4+ stars. Maybe ordering off the menu yields a better result? If so - patrons should not be made to feel like ordering from the menu is an inconvenience to the kitchen. At least the can of soda was labeled and tasted like it should -R read more

Gotta take a moment and talk up The Taj Indian Restaurant. My wife and I popped over today around lunch not realizing that they're closed on Mondays. Sad, as it's my birthday and we wanted to take advantage of being off work and the kids being with Grandma. The owner/chef was there doing prep and told us to take a seat and he'd whip something up for us. (Now that you know they are closed on Mondays, please don't do this.) We had some chit-chat about what we like and he said he'd fix something for us based on that. My wife got chicken tikka masala (in her words "basic white girl Indian") and I got Madras curry lamb. We split some naan (I think it was either onion or garlic). Both dishes were excellent, great flavor and heat levels. The lamb still had the right amount of fat on it to help flavor the dish (I think overly lean meats are the devil), and the naan had a pleasant crispy exterior and chewy interior. If you're eating lighter or cheaper, it would be easy to split an entree and order of naan to stay under $20 for dinner. If you haven't yet been, please go. Vijay has a lot of passion for making great food that will keep you coming back. It's certainly going to be our top option for dining out. read more
