I have mixed feelings about The Tango Room. I had read in many websites, including its own site and on Yelp, about how they try to be a place to dance an authentic Argentine tango like is in Buenos Aires. I went with high expectations. And it met my expectations . . . in good and bad ways. Now, stop reading and look for the reviews by Robert L and Tiffany T. 5 stars and 1 star, respectively. Both of their experiences mirror my own. And I can stop here, but I'll share my experience after you return. Now that you're back :-) I walked in, and the room was so disorganized that half the newcomers (including me) didn't sign up or pay for the lesson. We did so after the lesson. These guys can get a lot of freeloaders if they're not careful. Strong preference for cash. Well-dressed, older crowd, although one of my partners was a pretty young lady in her 20s. The instructors are on the lookout for raw beginners, and step in to help; they're not snobby when they do help, either. I'd classify their lesson as "Introduction to AT"; all they taught was the dreaded 8-count basic that starts going backwards against the line of dance. For some people, even that was too much; for others, this was review. When the milonga started, the food came out, and I kept up my seefood diet :-p Before long, most of the dancers were at least strong beginners, leaning toward intermediate. Most appear to be regulars, and do not appear very welcoming to visitors. Tango has a higher snob level than most dances, and I could sense that here. Argentine Tango is one of the more difficult partner dances to learn, and those who reach intermediate level have something to be proud of. But those of us who want to experience an authentic milonga, and hope to improve our dancing skills, can be turned off by tango snobs who look down their nose at dancers (especially at men) who don't do it right, and have no problem breaking into a lecture about the proper way to do the embrace, the walk, the lead, the musicality, the ochos and paradas, you name it. I even got lectured about not reserving a seat in advance. They have a lunchtime practica for $5. I didn't partake, but I think it might be a better experience than the milonga. The owners and instructors are very good, and they might be the ones here at lunch. As for Saturday nights, it's better to get immersed in AT for at least one year somewhere else before setting foot in The Tango Room. read more

As I have been in the Entertainment business for more than 30+ and coming from hospitality and excellent customer care service and make sure all my clients are happy & satisfied 100% and always going extra mile for my clients. I never ever heard this policy can't watch. This the worst policy specially for the new students and first timers. Don't come to The Tango Room unless you are of the intermediate level or above. I came here back in February with an ex for beginners salsa lessons, and while I knew more than he did, we were still in need of a lot of assistance. I don't remember the instructor's name, but as soon as we went in, she only gave us maybe five minutes of her time, and left us to our own devices for a huge remainder of the hour. There had been three other people coming in who were more of an intermediate level for salsa, and she ended up spending most, if not all of her time with them. She had come to check on us once or twice for about 10 seconds, and would ignore us. When my ex ended up paying her at the end of the lesson, she just took the money, and didn't acknowledge us, not even so much a thank you was said. There are dance rooms that offer their classes for free, to think we paid $15 or $20 for one lesson was too much. I wish my experience was better, maybe I'll give this place another chance, and come with a bigger group of friends so they are forced to help us, but probably not anytime soon. read more

So I had my first tango lesson on Thursday! I'd been meaning to find a ballroom dancing school that is beginners-friendly, and that I don't have to get in traffic to go to, and I found it! This place is owned by a very nice couple -- she's American and he's Argentinian. They love to teach. They are also so fun to look at in terms of their chemistry. Very cute blend of characters. It's an hour and a half group class and it costs $15. You pay either cash or check -- no debit or credit cards. They also offer bellydance and salsa lessons. You don't need a partner, although I always think it's more fun and comfortable to bring someone you know. The dancing studio is in a little plaza where there's a liquor store, a Curves gym and a bar called Chimneysweep Lounge. read more

This review is for Denise's bellydance classes on Wednesday nights. I have been dancing with Denise Arias now for a little over one year. I first met her at my old gym, and then started taking her classes both at her home studio and eventually the Tango Room. The Tango Room classes that she teaches are at 6:30pm (this is an all-levels class) and at 7:30pm (this is a more advanced class) every Wednesday. I have to say that while I love the small group sizes at her home studio, the Tango Room has a larger dancing area that is hard to beat. Because of this, in the advanced class on Wednesdays we are able to work with veils and canes and other props to further advance our abilities. For anyone looking into this, here are a few tips: - Come dressed in comfortable work out gear; you will work up a sweat. - Position yourself as close to center if you are new; there are two posts that provide structural support to the building, and you can est see Denise at all times this way. - Prices are higher for drop in than if you come regularly, so once you decide that you like, it is helpful to buy a punch card. - Prepare to have a blast! read more

Was incredibly excited to try the class. Just moved into the area and was looking for tango classes. My good friend recommended it to me, and did some research on different classes around. Was incredibly looking forward to it. I got there an hour early, as I didn't know how parking was going to be and waited around happily. The instructor came in and started class. Could barely understand him, but that isn't the point. I was having trouble with the step, and asked for help. I couldn't explain it, and took 30 seconds to "help" me, before he moved on. I have always wanted to take Tango lessons--so passionate and sensual!--I just went to my first class tonight and was really impressed! It was the Level 1 Beginners class. The teachers, Marlin and Geraldine, were both very knowledgeable and super friendly. I was immediately put at ease while learning the basics. I was not made to feel out of place it being my first time even though some people had been going for a few weeks already. Also, I had been apprehensive about coming without a partner, but there were three of us that came without partners and it was completely fine. We kept switching off with the instructors, then practiced with each other. There was one couple who switched off with the instructors, then practiced together. So either way, come alone, come in a pair, you will get what you want out of this class. I can't wait to take more classes! read more

The owners, Julie and Angel, are fabulous, as are the other tango instructors. They give you the tools to be able to eventually attend the "milonga" on Saturday nights and try out your skills. Remember tango is like jazz---it's improvised---although in tango the dance partners improvise their movements according to the rhythm of the tango music being played (and they work off one another). In the beginning classes you start learning how to literally walk to the music and feel it, and then they usually teach you the "basic step" and later other patterns and adornments to build your repertoire. In keeping with the jazz analogy, the pieces you learn in class are like scales (kind of). I can't figure out why the tango classes aren't more crowded. I just started taking Zumba (google it if you haven't heard of zumba) exercise class with Wil and I'm hooked! read more

For the variety of regular classes, special workshops, and open dancing opportunities the tango room is unequaled in the greater Los Angeles area. A group class is a great way to meet more people and to learn a pattern or some techniques, in general you can expect only a small slice of an instructors time in a group class. In a private lesson you get all of the instructor's time. It is well worth the hour+ drive for me and has been for the last 10 years since I discovered it. read more

This review is for the Belly Dancing and Zumba classes First off, I want to say that this is a really cute Tango studio. I sort of wish I wanted to learn to Tango because I would love dancing at this place. Very unassuming but friendly. I take the Belly Dancing class, and really enjoy it. The teacher is adorable and there is an attractive Latino man that comes and plays an electric bongo. The ladies in the class come in all shapes and sizes...tall and skinny with no hips or belly...round and short with all belly and no hips...so there is no need to worry that you'll look funny belly dancing. Just show up with a jingly scarf and you're ready to go. The teacher has us do a couple little routines each class; some moves you will use again the next week, some moves not-so-much. It may not burn tons of calories, but it definitely helps with flexibility and sure is fun. Cost is $10 (with a 10 punch card) or $15 each class I also take the Zumba class, and man does that exhaust me! We all leave drenched in sweat after these classes. The teacher does all the moves with you and some are really hard to follow. Everyone else in the class is paying too much attention to their own movements to see whether you screw up or not, so there's no need to worry about looking like a fool. The dance style is basically Brazilian street dance with a lot of booty shaking. The music is loud and fun. This is not a class for someone that is on the edge of having a heart attack though...it will put you over the edge! Cost is $10 (with a 10 punch card) or $11 each class read more

I went there for the first time yesterday for the salsa class at 7. The teacher was a no show. It was just 4 ppl total and we were trying to figure out what's happening. I waited until 7:20 and left cause there was another class that would be starting at 8. Now don't get me wrong - things happen and maybe something major happened last minute to this teacher and she couldn't make it. BUT there was no one that worked there! There is no staff and there is no number for the teacher so there is no way to get a message or contact someone. Terrible waste of time. Never again. read more

Come here for zumba with Shawnee on Monday from 8-9PM! $11/class or 11 classes for $100 if you buy a card. I've been taking zumba for years and she's THE BEST zumba teacher in the LA area. She has unbeatable choreography and most of the time, I forget that I'm even working out. I've learned all sorts of dance styles taking her class-everthing from salsa to bollywood to hip-hop. Plus, I always leave dripping in sweat. I can't comment on any other classes here, but they do offer tango and other dance classes. Now, the studio itself is just OK. I hate that there are randomly placed columns in the middle of the dancefloor. Not only do they block the view, but you can bump into one and injure yourself if you're not careful. Parking is always abundant and FREE in the back lot. read more

Beginning Belly Dancing Class with denise on wednesdays: Oh boy was I embarrassed to come to a belly dancing class. I didn't know what to expect, I was intimidated and worried that my uncoordinated left side would shine and basically I was afraid of looking like a fool. HOWEVER, that was simply not the case. I introduced myself to Denise who is a beautiful petite woman with a body perfect for shaking those hips! She has such a friendly demeanor and truly made me feel welcomed in her class. I had such a fun time and even broke into a sweat. I have been wanting to join belly dancing classes for years, but I haven't been able to find an affordable option, plus I was embarrased. Shakira is my idol, and now that I've started taking classes I hope that eventually I can do performances. I would definitely recommend this class. I am so excited for next weeks class I I will hopefully be able to purchase a package of classes because this is the most fun I've had in some time. I was so excited and had so much fun, I even purchased some jingles(hip scarfs) so I can shake what my mama gave me in the next class! What an awesome place to dance Argentine Tango. Went there on Saturday for "El Cuentero" and the place was packed with friendly and happy dancers. The vibe was very much what one would find in Buenos Aires. They take reservations for seating as well, which I would recommend if you want to ensure a seat for you and your friends. ----The above was my original review----- I also want to add that I adore Julie and Angel, the proprietors of the Tango Room. They bring a coziness and intimacy that is hard to create unless one has the heart and soul of Tango and music altogether. I have to say they have been open for 18 years and everybody I know loves El Encuentro milonga. The tango room is a great place to learn social argentine tango. I know some people say REAL tango, but i'm not going to be snobby on here. I cannot comment on their zumba, salsa, or fitness classes. This review is strictly on the argentine tango classes and the saturday night milonga "el encuentro". The regular instructors there are owners Julie & Angel, and local talent Jerry & Christina. Both are top notch in their ability to transfer knowledge and not a bunch of patterns. If you're looking for a bunch of patterns so someone can pat you on the back and you can pretend you can dance because you learned some choreography, then look elsewhere. Try some place that has a dancing with the stars instructor. But if you're looking for serious argentine tango that's taught as a language, then be ready to awaken your soul. This is a great place and they have amazing visiting teachers. What you get from tango is how much you put into it, so be active, ask questions, and don't sit around thinking tango will drop on your lap. You have to work for it and the staff is an excellent guide to helping you find your way. The saturday night milonga is also great. It's the only place I know of that stays open until 4am. The quality of dancing is pretty high, so if you are a timid beginner, you might want to show up early and take the pre-milonga class and dance early otherwise it might be pretty intimidating by 10:30/11 when the regulars roll in. But people are generally friendly so don't be too worried. If you are still skiddish, ask Julie for some advice. Happy hunting! read more

The time has come to tell the truth, ::takes a deep breath:: the past couple of weeks I have been taking tango lessons here. I've been secretly taking classes with Julie and Angel to impress a woman. Yes guys it is true, women love a guy that can dance. Coming from a swing and salsa background, Tango is the hardest dance I have ever taken on. Luckily Julie and Angel are patient yet informative, always learn something new each class. I haven't had the courage to go to a milonga yet. I heard they have them here on Saturdays. The dance studio is very spacious, plenty of parking in the adjacent lot. And the people here are very approachable, even the advance dancers help out the beginners. This is the perfect spot to start out in Tango especially being in the valley. As for the girl I was trying to impress, well she found out from another friend by accident. Yeah so much for showing off my natural talent but she was flattered. Highly recommend coming here, great instructors and awesome floor. read more

I've been dancing for over 35 years. For the past 25 year's I've been teaching West Coast Swing. I started dancing Argentine Tango on a fluke. One of my students was teaching an Argentine Tango class at an event and I join the class just to support her. Long story short, I loved the steps and the music! I started taking lessons right away. Learning all these patterns and what to do. With all this new knowledge I decided to go dancing Argentine Tango! Guess what, I could not do what I learned on the social dance floor. I enrolled in another group class and still the same results: Patterns, Patterns, Patterns that I could not do on the Social Dance Floor! I happened to be on a Hustle Dance Team and my partner lived close and danced at The Tango Room. She suggested we meet there to practice our Hustle Routine. It was there that I met Julie. It took me several weeks for me to attend Julie and Angel's Beginning Argentine Tango class on Tuesday because in frustration I quit taking Tango classes. Plus it was a long drive from Westlake Village! I finally did and very happy with my decision! Julie teaches us beginners all the required technique (mostly walking). Each month she covers the technique in depths of a different staple of Argentine Tango. Angel is there to assist in demonstrations, helping the men and the women. Angel bring another aspect to the classes. Angel is a lifetime Argentine Tango dancer. He brings the flavor of true Argentine Tango to the class. We went here once, and here is why. My guy and I wanted to learn Salsa. I had taken lessons before, he had never had any. Ever. In any kind of dance. But we thought it'd be fun to do this once a week. So we show up, and a guy - middle age, not Angel - is our instructor. He's nice. We keep switching partners, and there are various levels, but mostly beginners. Then, another instructor joins in, but apparently just to help out because we have one too many guys. So she's dancing with my guy, and telling him, with an attitude, that he's doing "it" wrong. Over and over and over. Until she tells him "I'll be right back" and then walks over to chat with some people getting ready for the next class, and leaves him standing alone in the middle of the room while the rest of us practice. Now dancing is off the table, because of this negative first experience for my guy. Of course someone who has never danced salsa is going to do it wrong, but isn't it the teacher's job to be patient, or at least helpful? Anyway, it looks like they changed the salsa teacher on their website, and I don't know if that other woman is still there, but I seriously hope not. read more
