Even better, the bun actually tasted good -- which is rare. A lot of places serve dry, flavorless gluten-free bread, but this one held up and made the meal even better. My lifelong friend and I went to The Tap House on our yearly trip to get together for a few days, and ended up going to the Tap House twice! Excellent craft beers, and service, and the food was hot and made very well. They also have smaller beer and whiskey servings to try different ones which interest you! The owner, Chris even came over to us the second day, and asked how our trip was, and thanked us for coming back! This is a typical tap room/bar in an old office building, was clean and comfortable. The closest parking (as most parking in and near downtown Chattanooga) is pay by phone, however, they will validate your parking. How much you spend will vary if you are drinking and/or eating. I went to this restaurant and ordered their burger with potato wedges. The burger wasn't a meal somthe wedges and drink had to be ordered separately- I found that weird. I asked for the burger to be medium well. The food came quickly. The wedges I dipped in honey mustard sauce (which was an extra fee to which I wasn't notified of when I was ordering), they were really good though. The burger reminded me of school burgers that they already have prepared in the hot water bath until they serve you. It didn't have a freshly grilled or just made burger taste. I didn't care for the taste and texture of the burger. I was a little nauseated after a few bites of the burger. Just the taste of it. The sweet tea was really good and I didn't know it until I left but the receipt said you get free refills. The restaurant was clean. Seating available outside too and it was covered seating. This was our first time here, and have no desire to come back. The first interaction was with the hostess. No niceties from her like "hey, how are you? How many" just stood and looked at us. We told her 2. After she sat us we decided the weather was good and wanted to move outside. We went up to ask if that was okay, and she was VERY snippy like that was an inconvenience for her. We sat down at the bar. The bartender looked at us multiple times and never greeted us or said just a sec. After 4-5 minutes we had our flight picked out and what we wanted to order. He finally asked us what we would like. Got our order in and went outside. Once we received our appetizers, they were already cold. Nice taproom in St. Elmo! The space is a good size with tables spaced around the room as well as a side party room that's a little more private. Even with it being a full house it wasn't that loud. Most of the servers/staff were nice. One guy behind the bar made it seem like everything was an inconvenience to him and with that being your first contact with the business and the where you order it was a bit off putting. Food is good, not the greatest in the area. We split a veggie sampler with two burgers. You get a good amount for the price. But I feel like you come here for the drinks much more than the food. First, I went on a Thursday when their Comfort Burger was listed on their website as being the Thursday special and priced at $10. We went during the correct times for the special, however we were charged the full price of $14. Overcharging $8! So dishonest and inaccurate billing leaves a bad taste. Additionally, I asked for thousand island dressing for the burger and some ranch dressing for the fries. They charged $1.50 for marginal store-bought dressing, as they don't make ANY dressings in house. Everything is lousy prepared store-bought dressing. Then, when I asked for my burger to be cooked medium, I was told, nope, we cook to 165 degrees which is well done. So I got an overcooked burger. When restaurants tell me they only cook to well done, that screams, "incompetent chefs can't handle proper cooking techniques." The burger was made from grass-fed beef, which I don't care for, and which is not indicated on the menu. That would have been ok, except I asked the server are you using grass fed beef, and she replied she didn't know! How can you not know this when burgers are your main thing?? Sure enough, after one bite I knew it was grass-fed beef. If she had been competent and honest and told me that, I would have ordered something else. Grass-fed beef is more dense, drier, and definitely not a candidate for well-done cooking. Can't recommend this place for many reasons, there are other great burger places in Chattanooga. Loved this spot for drinks and an appetizer! They have a wide selection of beers, as well as cocktails and homemade root beer & butter beer. We decided to split a flight of 6 beers which came with a small serving of pretzels. We really enjoyed all the beers, especially their selection of sours!! I also tried the homemade root beer which was very tasty. The hummus appetizer was delicious. The feta cheese on top was a nice touch and the pita was buttery. If you can find the bar the atmosphere at this place is fantastic! The building is beautiful with the brick, original floors and doors, Edison bulbs, cozy couches, and even the bar top is unique! However, it's located in a building with several other businesses and the only sign is a relatively small one on one corner of the building. The sign for the yoga studio was bigger. The beers on tap include a good variety from what I could see. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but they also had two ciders on tap, including Strongbow, which you rarely see. Food section is limited and appetizers were as pricey as the sandwiches. Parking is terrible! There is one lot for tenants and customers of the entire building that fits about 20 cars and only has one small entrance/exit. There are other businesses around that you can park at after hours, but not sure how they'd feel during business hours. Really great venue next to the Incline railroad. They did not have a kids menu but they're a tap house so that should be acceptable. We had a large group of 8. Everyone liked what they ordered from burgers to salads. The 3yr old enjoyed his reasonably priced hot dog and tots. And they had a gluten free bun option. They had a pimento cheese option that could be added to any sandwich for some Southern flair. My dad would have loved it, but I didn't try it. Staff was awesome! I love the Tap House - I've been here about 4 times Once with friends to have drinks and play Bunco, another two times to eat and have a beer, and once with a Yelp event. Each time I have been greeted with a smile from the staff behind the bar, offered samples for anything on the beer menu to try, had my questions answered (and I'm that question person so..), and had a great time. I love how they have different seating arrangements you can do any of the following (or all): - grab a high top for a group inside - grab a couch or two inside - grab a low too and some board games and play with friends - grab a beer sampler with or without the snacks and rate your favorites - listen to live music on music nights. - take your beer on the ledge/patio for a quieter place to chat - chill with your dog(s) on the patio - dance (although this doesn't happen that much) - meet up with a group (it's pretty quiet unless someone is playing) You can not sit at the bar - it's not that type of place. The food is amazing / they always have specialty popcorn and I love their sandwiches. The space is big enough to spread out! The beer selection is from all over but features lots of local beers (some of the best variety I have ever seen) and I love this about this place. All in all, 4 times and nothing negative to say. The initial waiter got my wife's drink order wrong twice and her food order wrong the first time and when we corrected it he got very short with us. Nachos were terrible. Maybe they just make them different in Tennessee but they had a small amount of sprinkle cheese about half melted and cold bacon and jalapeños. The club sandwich and BLT were both good also but the attitude of the waiter kinda set the mood for a bad experience. Basic breakfast plate and farmers omelette both very bland, with the most basic presentation (looked thrown on a plate). My husbands "brioche toast" was the butt end crumbs of a loaf. Let me preface this review by first stating that every palate/person is different and your experience may vary. I can only speak on my personal dining experience and if you are curious about this place there is only one way to know for sure and that's to give it a try for yourself. This was our first time trying this place at random for lunch as we were on the way back home from Rock City. We enjoy trying new burger places, especially local spots and have found some real gems since moving to the area a couple of years ago. In terms of location, this place gets about a 5/10, the parking situation is limited but free if you can find a spot in the correct lot which we did so it worked out. The atmosphere gets about a 5/10 pretty basic layout but the place was clean and tidy with a small but decent outdoor seating area for sunny days. The staff service gets about a 5/10 again, nothing especially bad but the staff seemed a bit task saturated which affected the level of service they could provide at the time of our visit. We came during off hours so the place was not full and our food did come rather quickly. In regards to the food and drink, the best way I can sum up our experience is Tap House is a "Bar" that just so happens to serve food. Our drinks were fairly priced and ice cold no complaints there 8/10. The highlight of the food was definitely the pimento cheese appetizer which had some decent spice and was pretty ok 6/10. The burgers unfortunately missed the mark entirely. I won't go into detail but they tasted similar to something you would expect at a lookouts baseball game, edible but that's about it 3/10. The total bill for two people ordering drinks and food was average and comparable to others in the area. Overall we were sad that this place didn't pan out well as we greatly enjoy supporting local restaurants and have found some truly amazing diamonds in the rough over the years. As a pure "Bar" Taphouse is fine and you should absolutely go hang out there and have a drink especially if you are local to St. Elmo but if you are a foodie and not much of a drinker like us, you can go ahead notch this one off the list. read more
