I had been looking forward to the Holiday Tea in the Drawing Room for over a month. Today was the day and it was disappointing! Our reservation was for a party of four. The table was preset for a party of 4 but with a typical three tier tea tray with finger food for ONLY 3 guests. The Drawing Room provided a printed menu of the foods being served but they all were not presented and only 3 pieces provided of each item. We had reservations for 4 adult. The food selections were very average and did not show any creativity in presentation or flavor. The savory items were a Turkey & Swiss on toast point with a cranberry spread, Roast Beef on a baguette with a horseradish cream, and a Salmon mousse on a cucumber slice. There were two tiers of sweets ranging from traditional tea scones to truffles with cookies and petit fours (straight from Swiss Family???), tasty but nothing special. The atmosphere was nice and understated with a harpest playing. The service was attentive and readily brought additional food since we were a party of four. This was the second special tea I have attended at The Tennessean. The first one was a Galantine Tea with special cocktails for each tea tray tier. However, actual tea was not included in the price. And to enjoy their signature tea peach infused black tea and rooibos you had to pay extra. At least today, the tea was provided and thoroughly enjoyed! I do not believe there will be a third time. For the published price of $79/each plus a $18 service charge per person, this was a disappointing experience when compared to formal afternoon teas at comparable luxury hotels throughout the US and the UK. read more

Okay I actually really enjoyed this hotel. Only complaint about the actual hotel was the lobby smelled kind of like gas fumes upon walking in and be careful of the entrance as the Marriott entrance is only a few feet away. The hotel is a boutique style, and the room was super clean and I enjoyed the toilet was separated by a door in the bathroom. Unfortunately the "Tennessean restaurant" on the second floor was a no go. I'd give it 1 stars for quality and service. I ordered a cocktail and ordered food to go. The bartender was kind and my pomegranate cocktail was delicious, however, I sat at the bar for a good 10 minutes and the customers that said at my seat and down the bar, their empty drinks took were not removed from the bar in a good 30 min after going back down to get the food. The counter was wet and sticky. I upgraded my risotto to add scallops. After getting to my room, I realized they were not included. Also paying $48 for risotto, even to go, coming in a Tupperware just didn't hit me right. This wasn't a cheap Chinese to-go order... I had to call to have scallops brought up and also didn't realize the description on the menu was what it was for the burger, I asked for a new burger or even maybe a bun, but honestly the truffle stuff on their was impossible to get off. They didn't offer to remake the burger and literally 20 min later brought a bun with two rubbery scallops that were way too fishy smelling. read more

We were taken to our seat and the tiered plate was plopped on the table without any explanation of what was offered. The bread on the sandwiches was stale and hard and the pimento cheese was warm. We asked if they had biscuits, scones or jams and they said they were out.?? Felt like we were bothering them for additional macrons. I was expecting the top notch experience after booking here, instead received a very average one! The room was stuffy, the AC didn't cool enough! So my husband and I didn't not get proper rest we deserved! The pillows were uncomfortable. I brought my own pillow and forgot it in the room after check out. Great boutique hotel. Every detail was selected with care. The hotel vibe is reminiscent of the palazzo tower, prestige lounge in Vegas. I didn't know that Knoxville was called Knox-Vegas until a staff member told me. The Tennessean definitely brings that energy. At check in, we were greeted with some Prosecco, nice touch! After check in, the valet will give you a lift to dinner if you aren't going that far. This was a cool perk instead of calling an Uber. They came and picked us up as well. Talk about service! The next morning, we had breakfast in the restaurant; The Drawing Room. Our food was great and our server was super knowledgeable. My wife and I have started driving between our home in Michigan and our place in Florida several times a year and Knoxville is a key stop on our first day. The Tennessean Hotel has come to welcome us to town as our preferred place to stay. Located a short walk from Market Square, the University and the Sunsphere, it is in a great spot. You can easily walk to many great places and the hotel offers a free shuttle for up to 2 miles. The hotel is clean and nice. Not many frills but crisp and welcoming. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and helps make the stay special. The restaurant/bar is nicely appointed and fun and again the bartenders are friendly and attentive. The smoked old fashioned is a must try! We haven't tried the food but it does look good. The Tennessean is a great place to rest and recharge after a long day of driving. We look forward to our next stay. read more

Restaurant was horrible. This used to be a very cozy clubby atmosphere but now is anything but. Loud and obnoxious guests. The table layout is changed not for the better and the service and food quality has gone down the toilet. It's a shame but when in Knoxville I'd suggest going downtown and not relying on the restaurant at the Tennessean. read more

We checked in for our wedding night. A special treat at such a luxury hotel before our low key honeymoon. The front desk staff including Hannah, Ed and one other lovely young curly haired brunette with braces were wonderful at check in. Made us feel so welcome. Sadly, our dinner experience in the drawing room was absolutely horrendous. Andrew was so incredibly rude and defensive when we said we didn't think he was communicating with us about our order. He got very angry and snotty. We asked to speak to the hotel manager and he must have realized he was in trouble. He told us the hotel didn't have a manager at night. We questioned that because any luxury hotel always has a manager on duty. He lied again and we ate our cold fries and burnt hamburger. (The lobster BLT was good but the fried green tomatoes were lacking on it.) We went to the front desk and asked to speak to the manager privately. We didn't want to cause a scene or upset other guests by complaining. She graciously brought us to a different area and very empathetically heard us out. She was so supportive and apologized profusely. She asked if the restaurant tried to make it right and we told her Andrew basically refused to hear us out. Hannah immediately did WAY more than enough to make it right with a meal refund and some gracious extras. She made it right and then 10x more. Hannah went above and beyond for us. The other front desk staff were so apologetic on behalf of the restaurant too. They were totally amazing. Even it maintenance man and valet heard about our situation and tried to make it right. Booked this hotel two weeks in advance for a UT game weekend after researching "nicest hotels in Knoxville". Wasn't sure if I'd actually be able to make the game since I live in California so I went ahead and booked not knowing the cancellation policy was 45 days in advance. Beware the small print on the booking will get you! So I was locked in at the rate of $1580 a night so my two night stay was $3900. It's advertised as a luxury hotel but the rooms are nothing special. The furniture is worn and the amenities are limited. For whatever reason we didn't receive any daily housekeeping our entire stay and we had no turn down service or fresh towels and ran out of toilet paper- all for $1500 a night!! The front desk staff didn't seem to offer anything other than to look surprised when we asked if our room had been cleaned. No effort to rectify the situation either. I inquired with the front desk manager who just replied that it would be looked into. No response after that. The only reason I'm not leaving one star is the golf cart transportation and the drivers were so nice and helpful. That was the only thing worth anything near a $3900 hotel bill. Hands down one of the best hotels I've stayed in while traveling. The staff are incredibly helpful and polite. The bar had great small plates and was a relaxing place to unwind after a slammed day. The beds were very comfortable and the bathrooms were spacious (so rare in hotels these days). We had an issue with the TV/TV remote when we first got into the room and they had someone up in less than 15 minutes to fix the issue. I will definitely be staying here again the next time I'm in the Knoxville area. read more

All in all, I had a great hotel stay at The Tennessean. It's upscale without being ridiculous, and highly convenient for a lot of reasons, including: - Location; you're close to downtown, including a skywalk over a busy road to get close to Market Square. The area is loaded with local coffee, restaurants, and more. There's also a Convention Center across the street from the hotel. I always like to run to get my bearings in a new place, and the World's Fair Park and Greenway Trail were right beneath the hotel, making for an easy, nice little running route to the Tennessee River. -Cleanliness; it's a nice hotel, so this is expected, but the big bed and every inch of the room was spotlessly clean. -Comfort; the bed and more particularly the pillows were very comfortable. I didn't wanna get up. Adding to the comfort of the rooms is a nice shower with good pressure, and Keurig coffee for that initial wake-up cup for all you addicts out there like myself. -Convenience; the elevators were always quick and easy. I've been to hotels where the elevators are shut down, or frustratingly slow and that was not the case here. -Good service; friendly staff throughout my three days. Others have mentioned the drawback of having a steep valet-only price, but I didn't have a car this trip. All in all, a good hotel that I'd look to stay in again unless I want to switch it up! read more

My husband and I stayed for our wedding anniversary and were able to stay in the same room as our wedding night! As soon as we got there, Drew was very nice explaining that they have a black car service that can take you anywhere in a 3 mile radius and bring you back whenever you're ready. Ed greeted us by name as soon as we walked through the front door and each time he saw us that evening. Phil and Michael are fantastic bartenders, very friendly. They gave us recommendations on nearby restaurants to check out and served me the BEST old fashioned I've ever had. I have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions, however the last recent visit will likely be my last. There was mold in the bathroom shower, there were two hidden fees on my invoice upon checking out. One was $20 for an "urban amenities fee", and one was 9.5% "no cash fee". Neither were disclosed up front, and neither could be adequately explained at check out. Also $35 to park a car. This is like a low cost airline that ends up with too many hidden add on fees tacked on to the original cost. read more

Driving north I chose this for it being pet friendly. Pictures looked nice so we took a chance on our road trip. Wow we were so elated with this hotel. Every detail was amazing and beautiful. Reminded me of The Edition brand of hotels. The food was top notch and actually got room service. (So many hotels stopped) The bathroom was beautiful and shower was huge and had ridiculously wonderful water pressure. Shower was a hot after driving five hours and arriving late at night. Employees very sweet and loved on our puppies and gave them treats, which they loved. Rooms were 5 star. Don't hesitate to stay here! Surprised someone would be so bougie as to complain about the hotel not turning your sheets down. Sounds like a bitter person because this hotel was impressive and I have stayed at quite a few 5 star hotels and am very critical. I do admit that I am a smoker however, I smoked outside and, instead of throwing my cigarette butts on the ground, I knocked the fire off and put the butt in my pocket and threw it away in my room trash can. Don't you know they charged me $250 for a smoking fee when I never smoked in the room, what a F&*$ING joke! I should have thrown my cigarette butts on the ground instead of throwing them in the trash like a responsible person. I am very disappointed and I will never be going back to that hotel. By the way, it says it's a luxury hotel however, they are sadly mistaken when the coffee maker sprays all over everything when making a cup of coffee. Did I mention the carpet was disgusting? My boyfriend and I stayed here over Valentine's Day weekend and loved it!! He got us the romantic turndown for our room and took me by complete surprise! Upon arriving to our room the area had a romantic feeling with the lights turned down and then I saw the roses on the bed, the matching robes and slippers, and also champagne and chocolate covered strawberries! When I first walked in the door I knew I was in for a treat! The staff was very proper and well spoken! They handled everything promptly and got me to my room within 3 minutes. As I walked through the building I noticed a major focus on attention to details! The decor was elegant and everything flowed excellently! So I need to preface this by saying that I did not stay here, but a friend from out of town did. I was blown away by the attentive customer service at every turn. From their valet to the front desk staff to the bartenders in The Drawing Room. The employees seemed eager to assist and engaged in providing a positive experience for every single person that walks through their door. The Drawing Room is a great hotel bar with an intimate feel and a great view of the Sunsphere. I was repeated greeted by staff with a genuine smile. The bartenders create incredible hand-crafted cocktails. The Tennessean Wildfire is easily my new favorite drink. It's a perfect tequila cocktail with tang and spice without being too sweet. I will certainly recommend that friends and family stay at The Tennessean and you will likely find me in The Drawing Room on a regular basis. read more

Shortly after checking in, I left to go to dinner.... Hannah, calling from an unrecognized phone number, left me 3 voicemails messages THREATENING me and my family with evictions and animal control because my dog was (allegedly) barking. - this was over the course of less than an hour. When I arrived back at the hotel, I was met with police who escorted me to my room to get my belongings...they will confirm, there was no barking coming from my room. The Tennessean is registered as a "Dog Friendly" Hotel.. However, Hannah seems to HATE dogs and all people for that matter. Over the course of one hour from leaving for dinner, Hannah had called the police, animal control and her manager to secure the funds on my room but still kick me and my family out of the hotel. When I returned to resolve the matter, Hannah and no desire to handle the manner professionally or maturely. Instead, she was seen smirking and snickering and her plan came to fruition. Wow loved our stay!!! Stayed here two nights while passing through Knoxville, the hotel and the staff are exceptional! The room was beautiful and spacious and had everything you could need. The staff could not be friendlier and willing to please! The valet guys were so great also, let us park our Harley under the entrance so it did not get wet when we were there and had some rain. They have a black car service that takes you around town and picks you up, rained while we were there one night so that came in very handy. Not sure how anyone could leave less than a 5 star review here. Just stayed overnight, and everything was magnificent. Didn't eat at the restaurant. I was a little annoyed at the $29 parking fee per night, but welcome to reality when staying at a fancy hotel... They all do it now. Other than that, no complaints whatsoever. Room was fantastic, staff was fabulous, entire stay was super cool. Location is not near the downtown area, but hotel shuttle bus would drop you off (free) if need be. According to staff they opened 4/1 so they're still working out the kinks. Staff has been super friendly and went above and beyond. For example, we went in search of vending machine for a snack late at night and didn't find one. When we asked the staff about it they offered some snacks they had on hand from the back which was incredibly nice of them. Pros: This is a new hotel with all new furnishings. Cory kept commenting on how comfortable the bed was. The feather pillows and down comforter made me incredibly happy. Also, the bathroom!! I would've been just fine sleeping in there. The shower was a walk in and it was huge. You could probably fit 4 people in there comfortably. The bathroom comes with Kohler furnishings which makes everything look modern and clean. Toiletries are by Molton Brown; a brand I'm not familiar with but they smelled nice. Cons: The breakfast buffet was OK, it was $17 a person and it's not your standard continental breakfast you'll find at other hotels. You won't find scrambled eggs or waffles here. Instead you'll find a variety of baked goods, cheeses, granola, yogurt, fruit, bacon, and smoked salmon. You might keep that in mind if you're traveling with kids or picky eaters. Overall, it's a beautiful hotel with great service. Would we stay here again? Absolutely, but our budget probably won't allow it when they stop offering introductory rates. read more

Don't waste your money. I'm a bit of a hotel snob. I've stayed everywhere from a motel to the Ritz and the Four Seasons. I prefer to stay somewhere nice when I travel. We were greeted right when we walked in and offered water. The first impression was fantastic. We were told there was a shuttle that would take you around the area up to 3 miles but depending maybe a little more LMAO. We got to our room and it was nice. Nothing amazing but nice. The first night we had reservations at a place a half a mile from the hotel. I was wearing heels so didn't want to walk but didn't want to get the car for a half a mile trek. We called about the shuttle but were told we were better off to walk...ok. As we were getting ready housekeeping came for turn down service. We told her we were leaving in 10 and would be gone until about 730. They came back at 830 as we were already in so we said no thanks. The next night we had a wedding to go to. Lyft is the only car service around and it was taking quite awhile for them to get to us and it wouldn't let us schedule in advance as usual Bc we needed more room. We asked if there was anything else we could do and were told "sorry the shuttle service only goes 3 miles and the black car is reserved for specific clientele". We also called about shuttle service that evening as someone in our friends crowd had a little much to drink and were told too bad again (we were less than a mile away). Got back to no turn down service again so that ended the night on a high note. We called for room service on Sunday and were told no. To spend this kind of money I do expect some "perks". There are absolutely NONE at this hotel. We were treated crappy at the hotel bar, by the front desk and it was just a horrible experience. Wish we had stayed at the Hyatt, Hilton or Oliver instead. The staff is amazing. If you are looking for a hotel in the heart of Knoxville, this is the place. While there are any number of large chains surrounding it, this one is better than the rest. The accommodations are clean and there are a thousand little touches that but it a notch above the rest. However, what makes it really shine is the staff. From the valets (even if you didn't valet park your car), to the front desk (who treat your request as if it is their #1 priority) to the housekeeping staff who are polite, well spoken, and more than happy to provide extra toiletries and make you feel at home. I will definitely be returning to the Tennessean on my next trip to Knoxville. read more

First let me say, I did not stay here but my daughter did. I did spend a great deal of time there with her so I feel obligated to share my own review. She will write her own but I just had to share what an amazing experience this was. We live in Knoxville but my daughter and her fiancé booked a room for a few days for their wedding. We visited in advance and they happily showed her the rooms and other amenities. She needed space for bridesmaids and mothers to get hair and makeup done the day of and the King-King room was perfect. Very spacious with 2 King beds, huge shower and bathroom area, and a beautiful view. The very large windows gave lots of natural light and the decor was lovely. Everything we asked for - steamer, extra glasses, bar height chairs, etc - was happily delivered. I travel a lot and the staff here was exceptionally helpful and friendly. From the valet to the front desk to the service personnel, it was 5 star. They engaged everyone in conversation that was genuine, stopping and facing you, as though they were truly interested, not just because it's part of their job. The staff was some of the best I have seen anywhere. I will happily recommend The Tennessean to any visitors to Knoxville. By far the best experience in the downtown area. read more

I was referred to the Tennessean by some colleagues at work when I had a work trip there a few weeks ago. I had heard from them that it was a very nice hotel and in a good area, so I booked it for a few nights in October. I do have to say that this hotel is REALLY nice for the price you pay. I know I didn't pay for it personally (as it was a corporate trip), but when I booked it via our corporate site, it was ~$210/night. (Keep in mind, that might include some minor corporate discount). But now that I've been here, I would expect this hotel to be around $400/night. Other similar hotels I've stayed in (in NYC and SF) were both $400+/night. Wins: -My absolute favorite thing was the free water. I know that is probably odd to some people, but when I travel for work, I cannot stand having to buy water at Walgreen's & CVS all the time. This hotel gets it right with two bottles in the mini fridge when you get there. They also have an evening service where an associate comes by and offers you two more bottles. That's four bottles a day which is AWESOME! The gym also has a mini fridge filled with bottled waters as well and I probably took another four from there since I worked out both mornings I was there. -The bed! The bed is awesome! It's like a big white fluffy cloud. I slept extremely well when I was there. I wish all hotel beds could be this comfy! -The staff is super nice and friendly. Each evening, I saw a female housekeeping associate making the rounds on our floor and she'd always smile and say hi. Everyone at the front desk was always eager to greet you and ask if you need help. Very nice team working there. -The gym: They had a very nice, clean gym. I was surprised that they even had mats and a foam roller (I still need to buy a travel sized foam roller). I love that you can actually set the temperature in the gym room (down to 65 degrees). I can't do that in my gym at home, so you better believe I set it to 65 before I got on the treadmill. No shame. I did change it back to 70 when I was done though. Only thing that they could do is get better treadmills. They had TVs on them, but seemed kind of cheap and had no "cushion"/ give to the tread. Could get better: -They offer free valet, which is kind of confusing and I honestly didn't love (I might be the only one saying that here...). When I first got there, I pulled around and it's a really confusing entrance since it's right next to the entrance to the Holiday Inn Express. I couldn't tell which entrance was which and there was no sign that said "The Tennessean-- Please Use Free Valet" or anything like that. So I just pulled my car around and ended up parking it in a valet spot on my own (not sure if that's kosher or not). But either way, I don't like the whole valet thing. I wanna park my own car and then be able to retrieve it whenever I want it. I also don't like it because when they hand you a ticket it says "Please allow 20 minutes for car retrieval." No way! Like I said, I'd rather just park my car on my own. All in all, this is the place to stay when in Knoxville. If I have another work trip there, I will certainly be going back! read more

We recently stayed at The Tennessean for 5 nights. I had called ahead of time and requested our two rooms be in close proximity to one another. The gentleman on the phone could not find our reservation at first, granted it was done third party. At that point, they only had one double Queen room available so they upgraded one of us to a King room. Not ideal but we made it work. Upon check in, I was given the cards for both rooms and told that they were on the same floor. We get up to 4th floor, check out the first of the two rooms then meander the hall to find the other, only to realize it was on the floor under us. I went back down to the front desk and they switch the room on the fourth floor to the third floor. They were on opposite sides of the floor and down the hall but once again, we made it work. The rooms were beautiful, the beds comfortable (the pillows not so much), gorgeous bathrooms, not much of a view from one room and the other had a logo over the window. The staff were mostly friendly. Ed at the front desk was the absolute best and reason for 4 stars vs 3. The parking situation was not fantastic as you had the option of valet or parking up the road in a parking structure that had a daily rate as well. The valet staff were all pretty friendly however, and always brought our vehicle up promptly. We did have a couple of issues in one room. The TV did not work, it turned on but the screen did not display anything. We called to request someone look at it and went out for the day. When we came back, the TV had not been looked at so I called down again and they sent someone to fix it, in which he did. The bathroom door is a sliding barn door. In the same room, one of the brackets was broken, making it difficult to open and close the door. read more
