I'm not a huge Disney fan but, who doesn't love Aladdin, Wreck-It Ralph, Snow White, and the entire Encanto familia singing loud ballads from floor to ceiling? My wife is a huge Disney person and absolutely love this and wants to come back for a second trip. Also, this is the first time I've been to an immersive experience, and I've actually liked the merchandise they have for sale in the lobby. We definitely walked out with a few Mickey Mouse mugs and some coloring books for the kids. This place is hard to find on your first visit as the entrance is located on the back of the building, facing the parking garage. By the way, the parking garage at faces that's all free parking for guests of the Lighthouse Art Space. This place is in the bustling neighborhood of Green Hills, so there are plenty of places to eat afterwards. Have fun!

One Saturday in August of 2010, I was having lunch at Panera with my then-girlfriend now-wife. We…read morewere discussing our plans for the day, and what we could do in the evening. It so happened that my eyes fell upon a pretty grim and ominous looking poster tacked to the community billboard at the back of the Panera. "Twilight of the Gods - Great minds die alike." A play by a new theater company in Nashville called Blackbird Theater. Curious, I looked it up on my phone and found it interesting enough that I bought us tickets for that very night. Since that first night, we've seen 3 other productions by Blackbird Theater: Arcadia, Magic and their current production, Amadeus. Blackbird Theater is a Nashville theater company by Greg Green and Wes Driver. They bill themselves as theater for the "intellectually adventurous," - in other words they specifically select plays that are challenging - in their dialog, in their ideas, in their acting and also in their production. From my experience they certainly deliver on all these. Production quality: From their very first play, I've always been impressed with their production quality. From the stage, to the props and wardrobes, to the acting - they've always have managed to create scenes specific to their era and to the mood. Acting: They've also been very skilled at finding impressive talent for their roles: In Twilight of the Gods, they had to cast for Mark Twain, Rasputin, Annie Oakley, Nietzsche and more. When you've got characters who are so well known to the public, it's easy for them to appear as caricatures, but in every case I've found the roles to be very convincing. Play selection: While I've missed two plays out of the 6 shows they've now done, from the 4 that I've seen I would say that while I definitely appreciate the plays they select, they are also not for everyone. As I mentioned, they select plays which tackle difficult material - philosophical, scientific, mathematical. That being said, the plays are far from being college lectures - they are entertaining, they are emotional, and even thrilling. As an example: The first play they had put on, Twilight of the Gods, was written by themselves (Wes Driver and Greg Green). It's a murder-mystery with notable Victorian people as the main characters. To put it brief: Clue for Grown Ups. The premise is that a wealthy intellectual is able to find historical luminaries reincarnated into present day people. With some convincing, he is able to transform these people back into their former selves - upon which they take on the appearance and mannerisms of the figures. The man's goal is to create a more enlightened age by specifically choosing a set of people who were experts in their own rites, and can discuss issues in a productive way. These discussions begin to be interrupted as the people are suddenly killed off - one by one. I managed to catch their current production, Amadeus, on opening night. Having seen the film, I wasn't sure what to expect. To put it simply, I was blown away. It was profound material and delivered better than Hollywood. For a play to span more than 30 years of time means a lot of scenes, and for characters to age. The actor who played the lead role, Salieri, was incredible as he transitioned back and forth between the young Salieri to the old. Most importantly, they managed to capture the mood, music and emotion of the story in a way that was deeper than the film (I could hear sniffles and tears of the audience). My major criticism unfortunately is with the venue - Blackbird Theater has all its shows at Lipscomb's Shamblin Theater. The theater itself is not bad: I like its proximity to some restaurants and coffee shops you can visit during intermission, and the main area is set up with circular tables that give the stage production more depth as those at the tables often feel more immersed within the play. What is really problematic for me are the chairs - which is not something I'd normally complain about. Shamblin Theater's chairs are awful - they are stiff, and upright in such away that three-quarters of the way through the production, you find yourself with a stiff lower back, and neck. The chairs are so bad they can sometimes become distracting, as you can't find a comfortable position. All in all, I'll finish off by saying that I look forward to future productions by Blackbird Theater, and there's a lot that can be said about a theater company when my only complaint is with the chairs. I encourage everyone (even those who may be intimidated by the idea of "intellectual theater") to give Blackbird Theater a shot - they're a small, local theater company that puts on high quality productions with ticket prices far less than what you'd find at TPac.

I must disclose that Yelp was a sponsor for the East Nashville Beer Festival and hopped on board again for this event. Both events were sold out shortly after ticketing went live and as a professional event planner, I can tell you that this is not a simple feat! Although I have enjoyed working with Matt and crew, this review is based on being an attendee and not a sponsor. Sevier Park was filled with craft beer lovers, food trucks, booths, and excitement. I had a really great time checking out new brands such as Hat Trick Brewing (Neapolitan beer goodness from my hometown St. Louis!) or Stoudt's Company to my tried and true favorites that included our fair city's heroes Yazoo to Starr Hill. For $45 you get a commemorative sipping glass and access to try all of the brands on location. Food was also available throughout and included a few food trucks, 12 South Taproom, Burger Up and more. Some of of my favorite elements included the Halfbrass funky percussion band that weaved their way throughout the crowd and got the crowd going throughout the day. Informational sessions were on the scheduled that included learning more about craft beer, brewers, and more. A portion of the proceeds also went to The Workshop which is a free bike repair program for underprivileged youth. I look forward to attending next year!

First of all, the breweries that attended definitely came to represent their awesome libations. As a huge fan of the wintery beers I was so glad to hear about the Warmer in 2012 and knew I had to go in 2013. I had porters, stouts, brandywines and several other types that lent towards keeping us warm during the freezing cold day. Mad props to the organizers for the tent which helped to keep us warm and dry. I also guarantee that even though there are only 1000 people there, you will see someone you know. MMMMM Beeeer! I was glad to see so many local Nashville breweries. Especially the newly opened TN Brew Works and the soon to be opened Little Harpeth Brewery. I always like to throw in parking tips. All I can say is, "People, take a cab!" Parking sucks at this park anyways and we don't want to drink and drive! The cab on over to the after party (which included a Warmer growler and fill) at Craft Brewed was cheap too. I did have to leave before the party got started here... We have been watching the Mike Huckabee Show for over a year and we were very excited that we were…read moreable to get free tickets to see a live taping. When we arrived we were able to get a decent parking spot and we joined the preshow line up to enter the building. We were welcomed by several ushers outside offering Mom assistance if needed, since she uses a walker. We waited in line and slowly snaked through the que leading to security where we went through medal detectors. Everyone was very friendly, even the police officers work i.l ng security. Once we made it through the line we checked in and recieved our seating Assignment. The waiting area had a few tables with snacks and bottled waters as well as a table with coffee and tea to enjoy prior to entering the theater. When it was time to enter the theater we were given special filming instructions and then we were off to be seated. We were so excited to see that we would be front row near the band side of the stage. I cant get over how friendly everyone was. The filming took a little more than an hour and to make it even better, because it was my birthday I was given a Huckabee coffee mug! Mom also caught a tshirt in between filming. After the show we were able to get them autographed and got to speak with Governor Huckabee! If given the opportunity to go again, we would or to go and enjoy other shows that they offer as well!

Nashville Film Festival is in its 53rd year. For those who are unaware, that's practically unheard…read moreof in the film festival world. Capitalizing on its location in Music City (Nashville, TN), the Nashville Film Festival is a week-long festival that weaves together film, music, and culture and produces a film festival that is both critically acclaimed and noted for its hospitality. The festival utilizes some of Nashville's most historic cinemas - The Belcourt Theater, the Franklin Theatre in nearby Franklin, TN, and the Andrew Johnson Theatre at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. The Virgin Hotels in Nashville also hosted screenings. I've always sort of been on the fringes of the Nashville Film Festival starting when Brian Owens (formerly of Indy Film Fest) was their artistic director and because of a sort of kinship that exists between Nashville and Indy's own Heartland Film Festival. However, this year was the first year I became actually credentialed by the festival as a film journalist and was able to cover screenings as press. The process for credentialing was really media friendly and I've been super impressed with how much follow-up the festival does with its media. It really makes me want to stay in Nashville and cover the entire week (which I may do next year). This year's festival had 150+ screenings (both in-person and virtual offerings, though the virtual offerings were definitely more limited). They also offered panels, workshops, live music performances, a creators conference, and quite a few activities after the day of screenings for filmmakers, press, and specific target populations. The film festival is guided by the non-profit organization NashFilm and it does offer year-round activities including outdoor movies, educational programming (they offered a great screening of the wonderful documentary "Butterfly in the Sky" during the festival for area school kids), the Living Reel Project, and quite a bit more. Of the theatres, Belcourt is easily my favorite. As is true of all festivals (or most), tickets are less expensive if a member. However, you can also get all access passes that really make it pretty affordable. The website makes it super easy to check out film options, the schedule, and to get tickets. Staff and volunteers are all friendly and helpful and I really like the vibe here. It's artsy yet accessibly so. I suppose I expected it to be a tad snootier and that just wasn't the experience at all. This is a definite gem of a film festival. It lacks the pretentiousness of some festivals and really just offers great screenings at great venues and people you enjoy being around. If you're in Nashville, it's a no-brainer to attend and I'd definitely consider this a festival worth taking some vacation time and attending!

A person at the festival told me that the atmosphere of openness and accessibility was how the big-city, big-name film festivals used to be. It's unfortunate that things change and I understand that it is most likely a response to changing conditions at the festival sites. I felt like I was a VIP with the access that I had to directors, producers, sponsors, writers, and generally anyone that had anything to do with the movies. Admission to the movies was $12, or $9 if you were wearing a rock n roll t-shirt, which was not advertised very heavily. The Regal Green Hills Stadium 16 is not a new theater, which added to the ambiance when watching movies. Seats were comfy but a bit creaky at times. Some of the movies/events I enjoyed: Musica Campesina - A new immigrant tries to get his feet on the ground in a new city (filmed in Nashville!) 10 Days to Nashville - Short documentary of a couples journey to their mecca - Nashville again! After all of the College World Series titles Coach Tim Corbin has brought class and fame to a great University that plays in the Southeast Conference. The stadium is clean and inviting as well as the baseball that has played their over the years. If you have not been it should be on your place to see in Nashville. The park has its own Green Monster in left field and a manicured field that boasts fast play on the base paths. Greats like David Price, Jeremy Soars, Sonny Gray, Mike Yastrzemski and other MLB players.
