I have never been so confused about insurance policies and frustrated with a practice.

I waited a month to get an appointment and then after arrival I waited over an hour to see the doctor only to find that she could not have been more disinterested in understanding the problem or potential cause. She prescribed cortisone shots even though I made it clear that I had been managing the pain at home for the last 10+ years and wanted to know the root cause and treat that. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and asked again if the cortisone shots would treat the cause, not just the pain, and she said "oh, I don't know, maybe." I was so shocked I didn't even know what to say so I didn't push any further. Beyond that, her team must not have sent over the referral for the cortisone shots because I never received the call to schedule that they told me to expect.

Hearing that statement was disappointing and upsetting. What that young lady did not know is my story. What she also failed to realize is that I have been under ongoing medical treatment for this injury since 2013. This is not an issue that simply occurred years ago and disappeared. Over the years, I have dealt with multiple serious foot injuries, including a sesamoid fracture, a navicular fracture, and other complications affecting my right foot. Despite these injuries, I have continued to persevere, walking and working through pain on a daily basis. Since my injury in 2013, I have continued to work full-time despite significant foot and ankle problems. I have pushed through chronic foot and ankle pain, worsening nerve pain, and a condition that has now progressed to bone-on-bone degeneration. In addition, I have ongoing right knee issues that will likely require a knee replacement in the future. The physical demands of working while managing these conditions have been extremely challenging and, at times, debilitating. What was most troubling was the assumption that because my injury occurred years ago, there was no reason for me to seek care. Every patient's journey is different. Medical conditions can evolve, worsen, and require ongoing treatment over many years. Many of us spend years trying to remain productive, support our families, and continue working despite significant pain. As a healthcare worker myself, I take pride in providing compassionate, respectful care to my patients. I have continued to work every day through pain and have only missed work when recovering from back and shoulder surgeries. I am not the stereotype that some people may associate with workers' compensation cases. I am someone who has done everything possible to remain employed and independent despite serious orthopedic conditions. My hope is that this experience serves as a reminder that healthcare professionals should approach every patient with empathy and professionalism. Comments about patients should never be made loudly enough to be overheard, especially when those comments are based on assumptions rather than facts. This isn't something I ever would have considered earlier in my life--not for any particular reason, I just wouldn't have done it. However, for the past four months, I have been working with Dennis Bueso, MA, RD (Clinical/Sports Dietitian), and the experience has been nothing like I expected. Being very overweight, I anticipated someone taking charge of the conversation and lecturing me on what I 'better' start doing. I think TV gave me a twisted idea of how these things go. Thankfully, it hasn't been like that at all. Our conversations are excellent and open. Mr. Bueso is incredibly 'chill' and immediately sets you at ease; it feels like a normal, back-and-forth conversation between two people. He is great at following up and is just a genuinely easy person to talk to. Since starting, I've seen amazing results. For those who know what A1C is, mine had been double what it should be for over five years. In just four months, I've brought it down to exactly where it's supposed to be. I give myself credit for controlling my diet, but Dennis has been instrumental in helping me understand what to watch and work on. In addition to the blood work, I've lost over 30 pounds in that same timeframe. I definitely want to give props and thanks to Mr. Bueso. If your doctor has recommended a dietitian, just do it. I worried about how it would go, but those worries were unnecessary. It has been a great experience. They also give you exercises that you can do at home. I went for the dry needling, but found out my insurance doesn't cover it, but you have the option to pay out of pocket. The room is wide open so it will be several other patients getting worked on at the same time. They do have some private rooms. You're given several exercises to build your strength back up in whatever area you have issues with, and they also incorporate some massage, and heating pads into your treatment. It's about an hour visit, and you're in and out. Wear something comfy. I have used them in the past as well and think its a nice office to use for your therapeutic needs. Check them out!!

When I was sent to PT for a knee issue, my therapist, Cindy Larsen, told me that she had also had success in the past with foot, ankle, and heel problems. My doctor was delighted to give me a prescription for additional therapy, and my heel is now almost completely pain-free! With a combination of stretches, massage, and targeted exercises, Cindy and her fellow therapist, Marley Anderson, worked with me to reduce the swelling and strengthen the muscles surrounding the problem areas. I recently had an appointment for my Epidural Injection here and it couldn't have been a better…read moreexperience. Right across the street from Mt Trashmore, the building had a lovely curb appeal to it and refreshing to see the newness of it all. Upon entering, I didn't have to deal with the stairs or anything like that which was good when you have back pain. It was very clean inside, quiet, and calming which made my nerves ease quite a bit right away. The receptionist were prompt and very easy to work with especially since I had my info put in prior to the appointment. That alone was a great experience as I apparently didn't fill out the pre-registered form correctly the week before however, I received a call and the receptionist walked me through it all filling it out for me which was lovely! It was less than ten minutes upon arrival until I went back with the assistants to which went over my info and made sure it was all matching in case I missed anything. After she left, minutes later Dr. Gauthier enter with his assistant to go over the info one last time. He was very welcoming and took his time making sure all the info was correct and if I had forgotten something and wanted to double check everything. I did remember I had a nerve test to which he then sent the assistant out to get information from that facility. In this time, he performed his testing/evaluation of my issues and then talked about exactly what was going on in his findings and how the procedure was going to work. He assured me that this process would be a bit different and most likely much better than the "caudal injection" to which was excruciating for me in the past. I had such a calm and comforting feeling with the process and really appreciated it. He told me what to take off and would return to take me back for the quick procedure. The assistant came back and escorted me to the room and again, very clean, modern and comforting. The assistant had small talk with me waiting on the Dr to which he quickly returned and picked up right with the assistant. We were laughing and carrying on all while taking pauses and being professional at the same time dialing in the machines. The procedure lasted about 10-15 minutes tops and for me personally, was so much better than any of the other shots or testings I had done. It was closer to a level 3 in pain vs others that reached 9.5! I told him I would happily do another one if it came down to that as that experience overall was very pleasant. I mean its not all comfortable but that is what I did appreciate about them both making it as light and relaxing as possible while filling you in the entire time of what was about to happen, happening and what to do after. I definitely recommend this place if an Epidural Injection is ordered by your Doctor and really appreciate Dr. Gauthier and crew for a lovely experience!
