Living in New Orleans for a few years, I can tell you that The Big Easy does not take their tiki bar game lightly and I've had my fair share of adventures. What really stood out to me was the level of commercial kitchen equipment that ensured the kitchen smells and smoke didn't take over the place. It's all in the details. The staff here is super fun and engaging which made it all the better. My friend and I were served by Adam and their service with the food and drink program made it all the five-star experience one hopes to receive. If you're getting a drink or served by Adam then you're in for a delight. I had a zombie drink and the flavors were so well mixed that it was easy to forget how liquored up they were. The Tiki Room... what a cool little spot downtown, tucked away and hidden behind the absolute gem that is our baseball stadium, home of the Chihuahuas! We're spoiled living in Grand Rapids as we have one of the best tiki bars I've been to, so my quest to find a tiki bar in every major city I visit has died down a bit. However, I realized I was staying pretty close to the Toltec Tiki Room while in town for work, and then I saw they have happy hour. Sold! I walked over right when they opened at 5 pm. Happy hour is Tuesday through Thursday, 5 pm-7pm, and Sunday 4pm-6pm. The happy hour menu has several food items ranging from $5-$7, and all tiki cocktails are $3 off, so you could get a drink for $9-$13 which is a pretty good deal. I was greeted warmly upon walking in and asked if I had a reservation - I didn't, but luckily I was able to sit at the bar. Definitely make a reservation if you have more than one person in your party, because the whole place seats maybe 25 people - it's tiny! I knew I wanted something different as I've had many tiki drinks in the past, and the Ube Chi Chi hit the spot. I'd never had a cocktail with ube before, and this was SO good. I almost ordered a second one because I liked it so much. The drink was creamy, boozy but not too boozy, and a bit nutty from the macadmia. I'd love to try to re-create this somehow at home. I liked that it wasn't super sweet. I was a bit hungry, so I ordered the Hawaiian hot dog from the happy hour menu. It was a great value for only $7. You can get a veggie dog or an all-beef dog. The all-beef dog was good quality and really tasty. I loved the grilled pineapple and jalapeno. I did have another drink - the Cactus Kooler. It was definitely sweeter than the Ube Chi Chi and I didn't like it nearly as much, but if you like a fruity and sweet drink, you'd love this. Overall I'm so glad I stopped by and I had a great experience chatting with the employees while enjoying the atmosphere. I tried the pork belly bowl and my friend got the island ribs. - The pork belly bowl had decent amount of meat and at first glance the bowl seemed to be too small; however, I was full and satisfied towards the end of the meal. The flavor is mild but good. - I got to have a bite of my friend's dish (island ribs) as well , which was a little dry to my liking. The sides were pretty bad, wouldn't recommend them. I'm doing a three-week, cross country road trip and El Paso was one of my stops, the last stop before I head home to deep rural AZ. While in Marfa, I thought I should see if there are any tiki bars in, of all places, El Paso. Well, my tikiphile pals directed me to The Tiki Room El Paso, and they were spot-on. The space is dark and seductively moody so I knew it would be a fun, albeit super fast drink-and-go stop. And it delivered like a muthafuggah. I really came for swag but ya can't go tiki-rooming and not get a ballsout badass drink. So, drank I did. I felt like some frat boy chugging my drink but they hit harder, ya know? =) Anyway, the owner, Noelle, welcomed me upon arrival, and she was super rad, very friendly (I was already a bit buzzed up from dinner and wine at the Plaza where I was staying), and got me all hooked up with Ts and glasses, plus my drink. I was a few days early for any mugs but I did score four mai tai glasses for home use, plus two Ts. Fan boying aside, as an Ad Agency guy, I earned a living noticing nuance in human behavior (I'm going deep here lol) and pay attention to my surroundings. The table next to me, it was their first time, and the server did an incredible job of walking them through the various drinks, commenting on the booze quotient and kinda walking through the various drinks. Impressive for any tikiphile to hear a server not be a jerk to tiki n00bs. Also, El Paso downtown is FIRE. There was a baseball game, a little local arts market and so forth. Let's talk The Tiki Room food. TDLR: it's as good if not better than it was at the old location, since they now have plenty of space, but it's still slow because they're staffing up. We went to the new Tiki Room specifically to eat and I was excited about the new dynamite mussels they had for Valentine's, but they ran out by the time we came at 9 pm. I'll list the items that we got and what the various comments and reactions were... Veggie Spring Rolls: "so good, but be careful they are burning hot, I burnt my tongue" Edamame: finished by everyone quickly Coconut shrimp: "so crunchy, and so coco-nutty" All beef hotdogs: "they left onions on even though I told them no onions, but I'll just pick them out and it's delicious!" Ahi tuna poke bowl: "this is really good. The textures are perfect" Fried tofu poke bowl: "those fried tofu with the garlic bits stuck to them are incredible, I wish I had ordered that" And last but not least, I had to double check that the VEGAN Oyster Unagi Musubi tacos were in fact actually oyster mushrooms and NOT Unagi (eel/ because it was such a crazy duplicate. The food was filling and delicious, but it did take a while to come out so I wandered over to the open bar/kitchen area and I saw why. There was only one chef that night and he was making sure that the stuff he was sending out was up to par. He was scooping and plating and giving each dish little bit of love and a lot of sesame seeds. I dubbed him "Sesame BAE". So if you're going to the Tiki Room, I highly recommend that you bring your patience and indulge in some strong drinks, of which there are plenty. Just relax and lounge around because your food will come and it will be good but please have patience until they slowly staff up their kitchen.
