Visiting family in Lumberton, they decided to take us to the Tree. The atmosphere was quite nice! The decor was 'upper class -farmhouse style. The staff was all very nice and attentive! The food did take a minute to get to the table.... But we were one of the first tables, actually THE first to be seated that evening. 3 out of the 4 people at our table said their food was horrible. One had chicken fried steak and complained that it was 'all breading' and couldn't taste the steak. One had a Philly cheesesteak type sandwich and complained that the steak was cubed as opposed to thin sliced like a cheese-steak should be. Also said it tasted nothing like it should've. The third person ordered a seafood dish that wasn't thoroughly cooked, as well as a side dish of a vegetable (can't remember which one) that tasted as though it had been soaked in pure vinegar. My plate was fine. But, I just had a plain ol' hamburger. The restaurant didn't even have the manager come over to discuss the issues at our table, which I thought was odd. If you're looking for a great Sunday brunch, try the giant cinnamon rolls! They come highly recommended!! Get there early, they usually run out around 1 pm!! My hubby and I dropped in for lunch on a Saturday and while the chicken fried steak was $15, it was cooked perfectly!! The tender beef was delicious and the the gravy was perfect! Not to mention it covered the entire plate!! In the way of appetizers, the cheese curds were very good!! I also got the fried green tomato caprese for my meal! It is really good! The tomatoes were crispy and cooked well and the mozzarella was fresh! It is definitely different!! If you don't mix food well, this isn't for you...but if you like to live on the wild side, try it!! Amazing food and a good experience. Large whiskey menu, only bottled beer. Good appetizers, but I wish there was more variety a d not just friend food. The hero of the night is the owner cooking the steaks on an open fire. Very impressive. He came out to talk about the preferred sear on the steaks. They were cooked perfectly. Sides were delicious. We finally got to go to check out "The Tree" in Lumberton Friday evening! I was wondering if it was the same place I used to frequent that was in Hillister North of Lumberton and Kountze because the food was very, very good there! It didn't take long to find out from our waiter that the owners were indeed the same people!!! Very nice folks that had a great restaurant with great food for being practically in the middle of nowhere just south of Woodville!!! Their place in Lumberton is just at good as I remember they're first place being!!! We had an appetizer of the Fried Mushrooms that were very good with Ranch Dip. My wife ordered the Catfish platter with Purple Hull peas for her side. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed potatoes and Cream Gravy for my potatoes and steak. We both also ordered House Salad to go with our dinners. The Salads we're very fresh and the lettuce was crispy and cold with tomatoes and purple onions. My wife had Ranch dressing with hers and I had Bleu Cheese dressing with mine that was really good!!! We ordered our 6 year old the "Dino" Chicken Nuggets off of the kids menu! For sometime who kept saying he wasn't hungry he ate most of them along with the waffle fries that came with it!!! We had iced tea for our drinks and our 6 year old had Pepsi. I must say that the food was really phenomenal!!! You can have your seafood fried, or grilled and my wife had them Grill her Catfish fillets and they were perfect she said!!! Her Purple Hull peas were excellent, I know because I tried them myself! My Chicken Fried Steak was very impressive and took up most of my plate that had two scoops of Mashed potatoes and the steak and potatoes were covered in Cream Gravy and was absolutely terrific!!! I was full, but managed to squeeze in the last few bites! We were all full when the waiter came by to ask if we had room for dessert? We said, no we didn't but out of curiosity we asked if they still made their Bread Pudding with the White Chocolate and Raspberry Sauce he looked at us and said actually, yes they did!!! That was our happy moment, so we got an order of the Bread Pudding to bring home!!! I can happily say we were very happy with our meal and our waiter who's name was Seth. We found out that he was pretty new, but he was doing a fine job at keeping up with his tables! Their menu is close to the same as it was over 15 years ago in Hillister, and it was all very good then! They had one of the best steaks I've ever eaten that last time I was living in East Texas and would put it up against some of the better known places in Houston! You can bet the next time we come back, I'm going to order me a really great Ribeye!!! Kudos to Martin and Cindy for holding it all together after all these years and even making it better! First visit here. We tried the Sunday Brunch. Seems they have one special menu item each Sunday for the brunch in addition to the regular menu. I opted for the chicken fried steak after seeing many positive reviews about it. The reviews were right. The statesman was huge. The breading was crispy and well seasoned, but light. The steak was so tender I didn't even need a knife for the half I could eat. It was delicious My wife had a 6-oz sirloin and baked potato. She thoroughly enjoyed it. It was cooked to perfection. To drink, I had a Bloody Mary and coffee. The Mary was a little bland... I like mine spicy. Waitress served my coffee without a spoon to stir a little sugar in with, but no biggie. I've been in the restaurant industry for 5 years and This place was awful. Ordered 4 stakes at the table and all of them had wayy to much fat. Server with brown hair and who was training someone roller her eyes at my parents and had an attitude from the start didn't appreciate that at all. We had 7 people in our party and the table arrangement was awful hostess could have done better had servers and guests rubbing up on my mothers chair every time they had to pass. We stopped by The Tree tonight for the first time, and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. The restaurant is nice inside, and you can watch (and smell) them cook the steaks on one end. My husband had the smothered steak with mashed potatoes. It had an amazing flavor and was perfectly cooked. I had the grilled Cajun catfish, which is grilled catfish over rice smothered with crawfish ettoufe. It was absolutely delicious. My 5 year old son had the fried catfish with French fries, and he cleared his plate. We will definitely be back! read more

First hostess wasn't wearing a mask, customers were practically having to sit side by side no attempt at spacing and all the staff were not wearing masks.
