We booked it several weeks ahead through Viator which was an easy process. The meeting place is outside next to the first burying grounds on the tour. It would've been good if the gathering place had been at an office or indoor waiting room so people could access a restroom before starting off. The group was very large but was broken up into two smaller groups. The tour was about 90 minutes and included a variety of stops with associated spooky stories. Our guide was friendly and had a fun personality and a lot of local knowledge. We didn't see any ghosts, and apparently the hotel on the tour doesn't allow the tour to go inside anymore. Even if you don't like ghosts, this is a good tour to see famous Boston sights and learn about the city!

I wanted to get a real intimate knowledge of Boston which we didn't get for $100 a pop. 4.) This may be my bad but I assumed/read a lot of the famous Freedom Trail iconic sites would be explained and importance discussed but that was not the case. We will be trying to do a Freedom Trail specific tour to supplement the historical education before we leave. 5.) Was Harvard square MIT too far away to include in the tour? 6.) Could have had more knowledge of the sites we did see, more facts, more knowledge of what we did see.

Paul was my guide and I couldn't have asked for a better tour guide. I've only been on a Segway once before for literally a minute, so you barely can count that experience, but Paul had an excellent teaching style and great tips and tricks to quickly acclimate to riding a Segway. Within minutes, I was comfortable with riding the Segway and enjoying the cruise through a city. Paul had a lot of great stories and really was in tuned with making the tour a safe and enjoyable experience, which he not only delivered on, but truly exceeded. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, did a great job of reiterating key events that lead to the Civil War, and was very open to questions. The only thing I'd recommend is putting together a one-page piece that lists all the personalities and the timelines -- or perhaps that could be included on the web site. Maybe just relevant for history dorks like me That said, I learned a great deal during this tour. And I recommend it highly. A hidden jewel of Boston, it is!

Bought this with an Amazon Local voucher, mainly because it was so cheap, and didn't really know…read morewhat to expect from it. But it turned out to be one of the most pleasant walking tours I've had in Boston or anywhere. As the other reviewer says, tourists who come to the city always flock to the colonial and revolutionary attractions, and Boston's role in the Civil War gets a bit neglected. Which is a shame, because the city was almost as important for the Civil War as the War of Independence. The tour guide said it would be 75-90 minutes; we wound up going to exactly 90, but it never felt exhausting. He was terrifically knowledgeable without being showy or pushy, and gave a really well-paced survey that went from the 1830s and 40s through the immediate buildup to the war to the changing local reactions to Lincoln and the Union, and some of the aftermath. He was really great on city and state politics of the period, the influx of immigrants, the debates over women's rights, the religious history, and a lot else. He answered all our questions generously, and in general had a teacher's tactful sense of when a response needed more development and when it was complete enough. Again, we used a voucher, but the tour is a steal even at the regular price. My wife and I plan to go on the Beacon Hill tour before not too long. If you're a Civil War buff visiting for the weekend, you won't want to miss it. Or if (like us) you're a local who's interested in Boston history but looking to get away from the Freedom Trail, try it out. There's lots of good stuff here.
