Ryan delivered AGAIN! This time with updates on plans and Lighting! Ryan came out to meet me and discuss again the look that I wanted to continue. We met at a nursery to update on plants and also he brought lighting fixtures to show how it would be set up in the yard. When my wife and I purchased our home in Folsom, one of our top priorities was the backyard. While the house was once a showcase yard, years of neglect and foreclosure had left it in a sad state. At almost a third acre, with varying terrain, and an existing pool, we had some challenges on our vision. Our vision was to have a yard that felt like a vacation, and priorities were drought-tolerance, low maintenance, and we wanted to do alot of the work ourselves. We hired a well-known local landscape design & construction company to complete the design, which we were very happy with. However, the "turn key" cost of the design was approximately $60,000. We knew we wanted to do a lot of the work ourselves, and "value engineered" the design to get the costs aligned with our budget. We took our drawings to several highly rated contractors for bids, and broke out the scopes of work such as concrete for separate bids. Ryan McConnell, owner of Turfman, came to my attention from a coworker who recently completed a project with him. Our original intent was to have him bid only the irrigation and sod, however when we met with Ryan he convinced us to let him bid the entire project. Ryan promptly provided an estimate, which was broken down thoroughly so we could decide what items to add or delete to meet our budget. Ryan bid the concrete portion of the project (approximately 1,200 sf of stamped colored concrete) which I honestly did not expect him to have competitive pricing. His quote from his subcontractor beat the other four estimates I had, and included alot of extras which others did not. In the end, I decided to have Turfman install all drainage, walls, concrete, sod, and irrigation per the drawings I had completed for nearly a third of the original budget. We held off on installing the planting (the least expensive part of the project actually) until next year due to budget concerns. Ryan has no problem breaking the project down to whatever size needed. Ryan is the owner of the company and very responsive, patient, creative, and reliable. He does what he says he is going to do, when he says he will do it. What impressed me most is his work ethic, and his employees. All his employees are people you feel comfortable with on your property, and are respectable and clean up after themselves. it's not uncommon to see Ryan himself on your project with a shovel and broom working alongside them. Ryan's company, Turfman, is not a huge company like many others in town, so you get the direct attention of the company owner. I highly recommend him, and will be working with him again in the future for additional landscape planting. read more

I contacted the Turf Man after seeing the excellent reviews on Yelp. I was put in touch with Jake, and he came out for an estimate. He had a great personality and was very knowledgeable, helpful, and enthusiastic. I was excited to include his bid in our consideration for artificial turf. Jake left and told me he would email me a quote within a few days. Five days later I touched base with Jake via email to make sure I didn't miss his bid. Jake responded and told me that he was still working on it, and that he would be in contact. Seven days after that I still heard nothing, so I emailed Jake again. He never responded. I tried one final email five days after that, again with no response. I then called the phone number for the business and left a voicemail - no response. I messaged the business on Yelp - no response. I was quite frustrated that I wasted nearly a month trying to get a hold of this business, but didn't think anything of it until I was talking with a friend regarding turf. She told me that she had a guy out for a quote and now was having the hardest time getting a hold of a company as it seemed like they dropped off the face of the earth... yes, it was Jake with The Turf Man. We contacted Ryan and were put in contact with Jake regarding a quote to completely redo our front yard. Over the span of a month, the company was wonderful, we had multiple meetings, designed the yard and they got to work. They completed the job, told us we had a year warranty on all plants they had installed, and we were told to message them with any concerns. About a month in, we noticed the plants looked a little stressed, so we message Jake about the watering recommendations. He asked to see a picture of the sprinkler system and it was promptly sent. Crickets. Sent another message a good period later, in case they were busy. Crickets again. Resorted to manually watering all the plants and lawn, since it didn't seem anything was working. Tried messaging the company again to no reply. After making one final call, I had another lawn company inspect the front after they had done a job in our backyard. The sprinkler wire was severed and was not working. Fortunately, the rain this year helped save many of the plants, but a few are currently dead and don't seem like they're going to be salvaged. Most of the job they did was pretty great and I am happy with. But that said, the warranty meant nothing to them, and had I only paid them 60% of what I agreed to in the contract, you can bet they would have been less than enthused. Reading other reviews, this seems like a trend with them. They'll do great work, and then not answer their phones despite the promise of follow through. Factor that into the negotiation process, and be weary when dealing with them. read more

After our pool was completed our front lawn was torn up. We got a couple of quotes, but The Turf Man --Ryan--was reasonable and forthright about a min and max price based on what might be found in the ground. Final cost was right in the middle. Ryan not only squeezed us in that week, but agreed to accept our credit card (checks are preferred!) due to the fact the pool had left us a little short on cash! The Turf Man, Ryan McConnel, remodeled our back yard almost 3 years ago. His foresight shows through in the way our yard has developed and matured over that time. The space has knit together. It is multi-layered in height and depth and as the select plants have grown there have been various spaces created to add our own little personalized details of seating areas and ornaments. The lighting system Ryan installed is dramatic and seemingly bullet proof. It is also very economical and easy to adjust. He also installed an irrigation system that was expandable. The watering system feeds all the plants that were installed at the remodel (about 32- we only lost 3) and we have continued what he set up for us, a second system to feed our raised beds vegetable garden in an area the Turf Man set aside specifically for that purpose. Ryan and his crew are amazing!!! they are extremely professional and obviously take pride in their work. A few months ago I decided I was going to do a Owner Managed pool build with the assistance of another local business. Basically the proposal was that this company would provide me with the pool design and required plans to get a permit thru the county, as well as bids from the subcontractors I would then need to work with along the way to complete my pool construction. Basically I would then act as the General contractor, organize scheduling, schedule required inspections etc. Some of the contractors I worked with were ok some were horrible but they all had one thing in common, they were there to do the least amount of work possible to get paid. They left my property looking a mess and several key issues with the build were not addressed by anyone since "it wasn't in their bid/scope of work". (drainage & irrigation... WHICH ARE PRETTY DANG IMPORTANT) I was beginning to feel overwhelmed like I had bitten off more than I could chew. Here I sat with a gigantic hole in my yard and no clear end in site. Ryan has an incredible insight on plants, hardscape and overall design ideas to fit any budget! I can't say enough positive about not only the results, which we love, but the attention to detail, professionalism, and people-skills of the crew.
