I was nostalgic and read Hunter's Guide to 1996 Michigan complete with a recommendation to stop at the now obsolete Pleasure Island Water Park. That used to be my absolute favorite getaway as a kid! We ordered arancini as a starter that came out tasting crisp like a tator tot, but the shape and taste actually reminded me more of a fried tteokbokki (Korean rice noodle) known for its deliciousness through its texture highlighting the spicy sauce. This would've been amazing had they had a nice gochujang mayo combo to dip this crispy treasure in, rather than ranch and pizza sauce. Next we tried the tikka masala pizza. Fun and inventive idea... much better than the naan pizza I had in Muskegon... however the sauce didn't taste as good as my homemade tikka masala base and though the pizza was tasty with varied texture, we found it somewhat lacked seasoning especially on the protein. If I were to construct it, instead of potato I would've had chicken, red pepper, cilantro, fresh avocado and pickled onion. Yum! To drink, I enjoyed a refreshing ginger Kombucha sourced from Walker Brothers in Nashville Tennessee. The kids loved their cheese pizza and cheese smash burger with fries and drinks. Overall, great first experience and would love to come back as it seems like they are constantly reinventing themselves with tasty morsels and brews. If you come, there is free parking in the back. Am I in Grand Rapids or Europe?? The premise alone is enough to get people in the door, but the execution is what will make customers return time after time. The ambiance is perfect. Feels like a cross between your grandma's cottage, a cozy breakfast nook, and a Michelin star restaurant. The staff was lovely and attentive. You can tell that they put their heart and soul into curating a five star experience for their guests. And the food? Great. Not blow-your-hair-back, but it was great. We started with the shishito peppers, hit with a quick sauté and some parm and aioli. They were really just peppers, fresh and delicious in their own right but nothing spectacular. Our entrees were the pork ribs and the (some type of pasta filled with cheese whose name alludes me). The ribs were good, but the flavors were foreign to me. Black olives and ribs is a new combo, and while it wasn't for me, it was still great to try a new thing. The pasta was the star of the show, it felt like that scene in Ratatoullie when Anton Ego eats the ratatoullie and is transported back to his childhood. The ice cream was BOMB. House made cantaloupe ice cream?? I'm not a dessert guy and this knocked my socks off. I'd go again just for this. And the cocktails were lovely as well. I got a martini with olive oil, which was literally vodka with three drops of olive oil and some Maldon salt. Simple yet perfectly executed. My fiancée got a sort of gimlet which was also superb. Overall, Cafe Mamo reminded me that dining at an establishment is an experience, and that experience is influenced by more than the food. The service, atmosphere, cocktails and desserts were all truly top notch. While the food was a bit of a miss for me, I respect the rotating menu and the fact that even the best artists can't produce straight bangers 100% of the time. I will certainly be returning to this establishment, as I am in full support of everything that this place stands for and will vote with my dollar every chance I get! But honestly, that makes for a lovely two hour, almost European style dinner with multiple small courses and lots of drinks. We arrived around 5:30 p.m., early enough that there were still places to sit, inside and outside. Our host explained that the tables were full at the moment, predicting a table would be ready within 15 minutes. We agreed and headed to the bar. As we were getting settled there a table opened up and we brought our drinks from the bar to the table (Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay, $15; White Claw ($5) and a Bombay Sapphire ($10), all subject to a 3.5% surcharge, which is never actually explained, so we can't tell if the server gets to share in the benefit of the surcharge or whether he or she gets nothing from the charge. I assumed the restaurant was not sharing this money with the service staff, so I tipped as though she was not a beneficiary of the charge. Service both at the bar and at our table was great. I ordered the Prime Rib French Dip ($22.00, thinly sliced prime rib topped with melted white cheddar and au jus. Served on a toasted hoagie bun with fries). The meal was presented with less than a 20-minute wait, totally in line with the venue. Our server was observant (she kept our water glasses full) and helpful. Since the sandwich was pretty substantial, I was able to box up half plus the leftover fries, making a great lunch the next day. Great service, authentic American menu, nice indoor layout with equally nice outdoor seating.

This part of Michigan is loaded with unique spots to eat and if I lived here, I would definitely be back!
