We enjoyed the gardens and oooed and ahhed over the EuropeanTudor style architecture designed by William's brother-in-law Clarence E. Day for the residence. The many baths were tiled in iridescent ceramic tile by Pewabic Pottery. All the georgous doors were hand carved by the Haden Co. of NY. The house is not at this time open to the public, although they do have occasional special fund raisers and charitable happenings.

This…read morearea is not for the average suburbanite, bed and breakfast goer, but it's a great spot to stay while exploring the city outside of Midtown and Downtown (only ~10 away by car) We found the guesthouse through Airbnb, which was super helpful in making our decision: https://www.airbnb.com/users/show/39040 Nathan is the super friendly owner who can tell you about the neighborhood and cool places to visit in the city, especially if you are a vegetarian, artist, or creative type. He supports local businesses (yay!) and can direct you to several businesses run by the local community development corporation. ~ There are abandoned homes on the same street, but he has a good security system and I felt safe and secure with another female traveler. There's also a little park where we saw children play across the street. ~ Rooms: The 3 themed rooms (Air, Water, and Fire) are comfortable and clean. You will have access to a full kitchen, shared full bathroom. We were in the Fire room on the 2nd floor, which had a great Tempurpedic mattress. The third floor room, which was unoccupied during our stay, is in the attic and looked spacious enough for four people - one full size bed and floor space for sleeping bags and pads. There was sound insulation leading up to it, so good for small groups who are traveling through. During our stay, we met another woman from Chicago who was considering moving back to the city. Neat! Inyo is the onsite kitty. He's long haired, friendly, and talkative. My friend had little problem with her allergies. Definitely recommended!

At the bottom of all the stairs, there is a platform with a Metal ladder to actually get to the beach. It was my feeling that the cabins are not put together very well, we won't be back. On the positive side, I called to let the innkeepers know that our TV remote wasn't working --we need batteries, and that I needed an extra blanket. I left that as a message on their phone, and they almost immediately called me back and took care of both of those problems With in just minutes.

It is such a highlight. We brought bubbles and one of my favorite memories is blowing them over the edge of the railing to see if they could make it to the water. Each day we got up to view the sunrise while sipping cocoa and coffee, and and it was perfection. The water was gorgeous and you could watch the huge ships pass far out. The spacious overlook deck is such a highlight! We also enjoyed the fire pit nightly. Bring wood! I had been concerned that other guests might be using it and be loud near our cabin, but that wasn't an issue ever. The whole place was pretty chill and quiet, which was perfect. There were other guests, but they were mostly adults. We used a generously provided gas grill to cook, but it couldn't top 300*. I'd recommend bringing charcoal for the charcoal grill also available. Cabin 4 is rustic but had nice touches like an electric fireplace, ceiling fans, and a beautiful redone modern bathroom, but best of all was the French door view in the bedroom. The wicker chairs at the table had sagging seats and needed replacing, but there was a picnic table to eat at outside. The Adirondack chairs outside were the perfect place to dry our suits, etc. Honestly, I was surprised at how quiet the place was. There are stairs that go down to the waterline, and it's a beautiful view but the stairs are extraordinarily steep. I'm in my 40s and I was afraid of falling. I would not be comfortable with my parents going down those stairs unless I was right with them. That being said, we enjoyed swimming in the water down there. There's a deck with an oversized industrial ladder, which did the job but the round rings were a bit uncomfortable. My husband slipped off them! The initial bottom by the deck had sand, but past that we found it was best to paddle with the inner tubes we brought because the bottom was unpredictable. Water shoes would have helped. My 7yo had a life jacket, and since the waves can really rock you I was so glad she had it. She would have been too young to be there just an inner tube on the day we went, which was pretty rough water. The second day it was calmer and I think she would've been okay. It was fun to look at the houses on shore from out on the water, and the kids liked a fallen tree nearby. There are other good sandy beaches in the area as well. The owners were excellent communicators to answer questions. Initially the unit didn't have futon bedding and towels for the kids, but these were sent almost immediately after we made the problem known. I forgot my charger and dress at the cabin, and the owner was so kind to offer to send the dress at no charge. We've good memories of our stay. Highly recommend.

Pancakes Pecan, blueberry or cheese. Try the cheese you'll thank me:-) Eggs and omelettes made to order. Home made yogurt, chai tea, scones and coffee cake, or muffins rotated on alternate days. The meal is rounded out with fresh fruit and hot coffee. Oh stop by the coffee cart for fresh baked cookies if you need an afternoon or bedtime snack before turning in for the night. In May 2015 we were married in CA. My future father in law could not make the trip due to health reasons. Joan and Buck to the rescue. The accommodations are beautiful, and the owners go above and beyond, introducing the guests to the room and amenities. Guests also get complimentary Detroit made products like Faygo and Better Made Chips in their room. Breakfast is included with the stay. It's a historic inn but with modern updates. The soaking tub is to die for. It's also a black women owned business. I met one of the owners, and she is so warm and welcoming. The Cochrane is one of the best places to stay near downtown Detroit.
