Alright, after 2 years of frequenting this establishment, I suppose I owe someone a review. Specifically, Meagan! Meagan is outstanding and I won't take my beautiful head of hair anywhere else in Denver. I go in at least once a month (about every 3 weeks or so) and she has always been on time, consistent, and fun to work with. Getting out of the house during Covid-19 can be an ordeal but I do always look forward to visiting Meagan and getting my hair did. A little more about my head, I'm Vietnamese-American and have straight straight straight and defiant hair. Meagan knows how to tame the rascals up there which is actually not that easy to do as I've had many terrible haircuts and dealt with oh so many cowlicks. Got a recommendation from a coworker and I decided to schedule an afternoon appointment. The environment and decor takes you back to that classic barbershop feel all while 90's hip-hop is bumping in the background. I showed up a bit early and decided to hang out. During my wait, my time in the chair and my clean-up, they had clients in and out in precision timing. Some places rush, but they got their act together. When I asked if they could accommodate on account of it being their mistake I was informed the other barber was an independent contractor and was told, in short, to hang up because he had customers to attend to. Bridget's the bomb! I found The Usual via the Denver Flea when I started quizzing the guy there. The Flea had just started, so they were still getting the finishing touches up and missing a barber. Then Bridget appeared. She's formerly from Proper where she was definitely the most helpful barber there, educating me so I can repeat the same haircut when I returned. I've had appointments before the pandemic here and they went very well. But recently, I had two appointments with barbers at the Usual within two weeks. Both appointments were cancelled, I never received a notification regarding both cancellations, and my attempts to bring this up to their front-facing employees was met with indifference. On 7/30, I had a 11:30 appointment. Upon arriving at The Usual, I was informed that the appointment was cancelled due to sickness. Which was perfectly fine (I would prefer that during a pandemic). The Usual staff informed me that I should have received a notification about the cancellation but I informed the Usual staff that I never received such a communication. Ultimately, we figured out the problem was that The Usual had an old cell-phone number of mine. I provided my updated contact information, and was very clearly assured and reassured that I would be notified in any future instance of cancellation. No issue. Immediately that day I booked an appointment for 8/17. Upon arriving at my 11:30 appointment on 8/17, I was notified by the employee that my appointment was again cancelled. The employee responded something to the effect that "you can't fix sick" yet I indicated that the problem was not with someone cancelling but with the fact that I had yet another cancellation where I had never been notified. I indicated that this was the second time this had happened, and that I was coming from an hour away, and he responded with indifference, scanning their tablet thinking somehow that finding an appointment for me, on another day, would somehow rectify the problem. When he pointed to my contact information and showed me my phone number, I saw that the former employee on 7/30 who had assured me that a cancellation would never happen again had neglected to update my contact information. At that point, I decided to exit the store. Why a 1-star review? First, the employee who was supposed to update contact my information on 7/30 never did, despite the fact that he provided assurances that I would be notified of future cancellations.. Second, the employee on 8/17 was absolutely indifferent to the fact that I had come up a second time in two weeks, from an hour away, only to be notified that the appointment was cancelled when I arrived. His response to the fact that this had happened twice and that I was coming up from an hour away was met with no acknowledgement whatsoever. There was no apologies by the employee, no attempt to at least attempt a modicum of customer-service sympathy, just the sort of response where someone refuses to acknowledge their business did anything wrong. Third, in my work, if I cancel something on someone, I employ multiple methods to contact that individual in order to ensure that I am not wasting their time. It's called common decency. It would be exceedingly simple for The Usual to use their same appointment interface scheduling system to send out emails notifying clients of cancellation as well. This would ensure that cancellations go to two methods of contact - as opposed to one. Normally, businesses that are on the front-lines of gentrifying historically minoritized neighborhoods provide better customer service than this. But I guess cancelling appointments with no proper notification is "The Usual." I await the response here. My guess is whoever responds here is not as good at ensuring good customer service at the point of contact and is rather way better at speaking in an evasive form of customer service circumlocution to hide the fact that The Usual could have done anything to resolve this situation. They'll respond with bromides while neglecting to acknowledge the heart of the situation. Because when you scan The Usual's 1-star reviews there at least seems to be a common thread of this occurring. Anyways -- you know what would have stopped this 1-star review? Just an "I'm sorry" or even a base level of acknowledgement would have sufficed. That's it. read more

They were either way too bougie, or had to aggressively let me know how cool and trendy they are. I can honestly say, I've found my last barbershop at The Usual. Love the vibe in there. They could have some chill music playing on the record player, or could be going strong with some Biggie. A definite family feel when you walk in. Greeted right away. Everybody just hanging out, and talking like old friends catching up. Each haircut I've gotten has been on point, and I've seen a lot of nice work walking out of there. Recently got my haircut the other day here and made an account just to post this review. He faced me away from the mirror and all of the supplies he used so I could not see anything he was doing. I specifically requested a haircut Only, I am young and recently started the ability to grow facial hair. Without asking before, or during, he shaved my facial hair off with the clippers he was using to cut my hair. No asking if thats what I wanted, no saying thats what he was going to do, didn't prep the area just went straight from hair to my face. Ive never felt worse about my appearance after leaving a barbershop before and thats the only thing people have pointed out about my "haircut". The lack of respect for my selection of service on top of the lack of communication is astonishing to me and I've never had a barber cross a line like that. Not to mention he cut my hair at a 1 when I asked for a 2. Save your money and dignity and go somewhere else read more

Let me start out this review with a firm disclaimer: I'm stoned. Yes, I puffed the Devil's Lettuce. But I was compelled to, if for the first time in my life, Yelp something. You might say I couldn't... Yelp... myself *hard snigger* But, I digress. This place is jam packed with hotties. I was the ugliest one in there by far and I'm maybe a hard 7-8 depending on the lighting. I was definitely pushing firm 8 potential before the cut, but after, it was no question. 8.2 at the BARE minimum. That kinda jump is a big deal when you're so close to the top. I mean, I'd have to work out a ton to get to 9 territory and that just isn't gonna happen. Ali was ready from the jump. Even when I hit her with the curveball "I'd like it clean on the sides with some texture up top" she wasn't phased. Normally people comment on my originality but not Ali, she's a pro. She was cutting before I could even start playfully flirting (you know, with that like half second longer eye-contact that if you fuck up you look like a total creeper), her hands flew all around me. I froze with fear and amazement. After a few seconds I decided to start shaking my head really fast to make it harder on her. "Faster!" I dared, and she rose to the challenge, her hands moving impossibly fast just fractions of an inch from my head. Her brow beaded up with sweat as she concentrated, the tiniest misstep could mean disaster. The end was in sight. My hair was almost perfect. She froze. It was done. We looked at each other through the mirror for just a half second too long and it got kinda weird and we both made that half-sniff-half-laugh sound and then just nodded our heads affirmingly. Suddenly it dawned on me: our encounter was ending. She motioned to the cash register that was actually an iPad and I tried to make a joke but the sadness was too strong. Too opaque. I felt the first tear push its way out and roll my down my cheek. Possibly the most magnificent moment in my young adult life had passed, and now I had to go on with my mundane existence. So I did the only thing that I could remember to do and thanked her, gave her a big tip, and waved goodbye. There are moments in life that we remember, and there are moments in life that define us. I had loved coming here and was recommended through a friend. Ben gave me the worst haircut I have ever had. I told him that I had worked to grow the top out. He cut it all off, uneven at that. So when I pointed out it was uneven it became even shorter. He didn't fade the sides but rather used a 1 all the way up. There was no blending. I dated a hairstylist for 5 years and so I know that my complaints aren't tedious. This was awful and even after expressing my unhappiness I was charged full price. I will not be back. read more

I was a loyal customer of "Proper Barbershop" for some years because my favorite barber, Luke Barrett, was there. All the barbers knew how to do both beards and a variety of hairstyles. Suddenly Luke disappears to parts unknown. I had a good substitute for awhile, but then she, too, disappeared. Many of the regular barbers I would see at "Proper" also seemed to be missing. Heard a rumor that Luke was at "The Usual" and made an appointment to see him again. When I got there I noticed that a large part of "The Usual" crew were formerly barbers I had seen at "Proper." Great to have Luke back and the best haircut/beard trim in town. I am clearly one of their "older" customers (been wearing beard styles before many of them were born!), but don't be intimidated by the hipster vibe or the ubiquitous ink (tattoos). They're a great group of friendly and professional women and men, whatever your age. My oldest son, 23, is also now a loyal customer of Luke's. Nice coffee shop a couple doors down, too, if you're waiting for a bit or need a hit of caffeine after your cut. read more
