Luckily for me, the stars were aligned when I asked a friend about her stylist and she gave me Jamie Gourd's number. Jamie had just moved to Hello Beautiful, which is located on the far end of an otherwise nondescript strip mall. Even with an address in hand I wasn't sure I made the correct turn, but I eventually found the salon, and Jamie. I changed stylists because I was spending four to six hours at the salon every time I had a cut and highlights. I have kids and jobs and house to clean I just can't spend that long on my hair. Even though it was a Saturday morning, Jamie was smiling and perky. She had me in and out in an hour and a half, and my hair looked great. I sent my daughters to her too, and they were equally pleased with their cuts. Hello Beautiful is new, clean and -- because it's open and airy -- pretty noisy when all the stylists have clients. The noise isn't too overwhelming, though, and mothers with young children will love the little table in the corner stocked with colors and books. My kids are older, but it's a nice extra knowing there's something to keep your little angels busy while you squeeze in some much-needed me time.

She was able to get me in right away and did such a great job she's been cutting my hair ever since. She used to own her own shop near 10th & Broadway, but a couple of years back she was pushed out by real estate developers. Luckily she was able to team up with another downtown stylist who also lost her shop to developers and now works out of that salon (Jeannie's). Sandra is very personable and has a fantastic memory -- after a few visits she'll know all about you and how you like your hair. She's also very detailed, you don't leave until your haircut is perfect. A typical wash-and-cut will run $25 and includes a scalp massage -- my favorite part of the experience. She does both men's and women's hair. It may be just the timing of my appointments but it seems like more of her customers are men. I've seen her do children's cuts too, but don't worry -- there are never kids running unrestrained about the shop. Parking is a little tricky as there are only a couple of legal spots on her block. However you can park in the Clubhouse Lofts parking lot right around a corner and pick up a temporary permit from the front desk inside the salon to put on your dashboard. Granted, if you live downtown, you'd just walk anyway; but she has quite a few suburban clients as well.

She said she liked a stylist named Elizabeth so I texted her number that I found from their website to schedule an appointment. She was very nice from the beginning to the end of the process, and was able to fit me in her schedule within the week. I was going from lighter ends from my grown out "ombré" to darker ends. I just wanted all my hair to be my natural color again, but also not use any unnecessary dye on the natural part of my hair. She said she could do that (dye just the lighter bits to match my natural color), so we looked at some color swatches and determined which one was the most similar to my hair. My favorite part of the process was the shampoo! It felt amazing and smelled heavenly. I was also very glad to find out it was cruelty-free and vegan. The price was also affordable compared to other places I've been to! She didn't up-charge me for my long hair length since she was only doing half my hair, and the blowout, style, and shampoo was included with the price. I'm so glad I went here to get my hair done instead of the expensive place I went to the first time I got my hair done! When my hair was done, you could see a very subtle line of the difference in color. The one we had picked out was darker than my natural one. She was honest with me about it, and, after talking it through, I determined to wait awhile to see if the color would fade. If not, she said she would be happy to put a gloss over it to help it blend. I'm glad I just let it be because now (2 months later) it looks totally natural! The whole experience was really laid back and fairly calming. Elizabeth was soft spoken and didn't try to force a conversation. (We ended up having a lot in common though, so that wasn't an issue). It didn't take as long as I had expected, the hair dye was good quality, ammonia-free, and she did a good job without making me feel rushed. From seeing the results of my own hair to my friend's hair, this place proves there is at least one decent place to get your hair done in Independence!
