Do NOT use these movers, even though they advertise themselves as high end. They damaged and/or broke many items, including three one of a kind mid-century pieces, numerous pieces of pottery that we had accumulated from our world travels, a mattress, etc. Repair costs alone were many thousands of dollars. We sent them photos and repair receipts for reimbursement, maybe through their insurance. They've been unresponsive for many weeks now. They have two trucks blocking two parking spaces on 5th ave for no good reason. A phone call asking them to mov their truck so I can park and take my disabled friend to the dentist has not resulted in any assistance. So far I judge this company to be rather selfish and unresponsive. read more

I've used these movers twice now - once to move from Hoboken to the Upper East Side, and a few weeks ago to move from the Upper East Side to the Upper West Side. I have nothing but positive things to say about this company. Not only were they very responsive and efficient in the quoting process (including arriving at my old apartment within the hour promised to work up a quote), but everything arrived damaged free and in tact. They even offered to bring me wardrobe boxes the morning of my move for my hanging clothes without charge (I just had to return them to the moving staff before the move was completed). The best part was that, when comparing prices with competitors, they were less expensive while still deliver top quality service. Disorganized, and very unprofessional. We hired The Velvet Touch to move a two bedroom apartment, and they sent a sprinter van, which (unsurprisingly) did not fit all of our things. The company would not accept any responsibility for this poor decision (even though we had provided an accurate description of our items through phone and email conversations). As a result, we had to pay for a second trip, including a three hour traffic "delay" (to travel approximately 3 miles). The movers we had were good, but the front office staff did not set their team up for success, and was unwilling to accept responsibility for their poor decision quality. Stay the heck away from this outfit. Some of my furniture was badly damaged, and a few pieces destroyed (including a computer tower). Whatever was salvageable was repaired. We recently moved from our townhouse to a detached house in Long Island. The inventory I provided for my quote was too simplistic so the move took significantly longer than the initial quote. To make matters worse, it was a really hot day. This did not deter the team from delivering their A game. The movers arrived on time. The team was extremely friendly and professional and they helped us finish packing our belongings on the day of the move. They also went to great lengths to make sure that the furniture was moved into the right rooms without scratching the wood floors or the newly painted walls. They did not leave until all the furniture was assembled and in the correct location. Moving is a stressful experience and the movers helped make the move as smooth as possible. I would highly recommend them for anyone else that is looking for reliable movers. read more

9-12, that was the time slot I chose for my couch to be delivered. Time is almost 2 and each time I call they have a different excuse as to why the couch is not here yet. The best one was, "They are 5 minutes away and tried calling but couldn't reach you." Ha, yeah, I've been at home sitting my 2 phones all morning and haven't received any calls from anyone but my husband. Oh, and 5 minutes away? Are they walking with the couch? My family and I had an unexpected move, quite last min. The Velvet Touch was able to come within the week we called the to give us an estimate of the project. The day arrived and a team of six large men showed up bright and early with two large trucks. All the movers were wonderful and efficient, and careful with our belongings! They spent more than half the day moving non-stop! My parents would highlight that they loved that they were all so attentive to their possessions and even helped assemble some of our furniture at the new house. Would recommend! read more

I'm so angry about the abysmal service I received from this company given the amount of money I paid them, it's actually difficult to write this review. But I want other people who might consider hiring this bottom rung mover to be able to avoid the experience I had. We were planning a move from the Upper West Side to San Francisco, and we were moving pieces of furniture, artwork and carpets that we had chosen very carefully and paid great amounts of money for. I'm talking about things you wait years to come up at auction and then pay very high prices for because of their rarity and condition. Obviously, no ordinary mover would do in this circumstance, so I spent some time calling around to come up with the best mover I could find, without regard to price. Long story short, I hired Velvet Touch. Once everything was unloaded on the west coast, our appraisers calculated we had sustained over $25,000 worth of damage. Some of the damage was caused by Velvet Touch, and some by the (even worse) outfit they subcontracted the cross-country move to. Examples: 1) A George Nakashima cabinet, in mint condition, which we purchased from the original owner, was wrapped in a wet blanket. By the time it reached us, the finish was destroyed. If you collect furniture, you know the important difference between a piece with a restored finish and one with a perfect, original finish. 2) A large monoprint tryptich was also wrapped in a wet blank. It arrived completely covered in mold. 3) A brand new, perfect condition grand piano with a high gloss finish was recorded on the inventory as "scratched, dented, having abrasions...", but all this was done using tiny little codes that we never noticed. Until part of arrived with a bashed in corner, and they were able to refer back to the inventory list to say it was already damaged. They literally recorded every leg, the piano lid, the bench, the foot pedals, and the piano itself as being damaged. A sleazy way to get out of being responsible for damage, if in fact it happens, which it did. 4) Our entire record collection never arrived, nor was it recorded, so they can avoid responsibility for that. 5) Our large Poltrona Frau armchairs were dragged, eroding the feet. 6) Numerous pieces of veneer were missing from various mid-century cabinets due to improper packing. On and on. So now, fast-forward to today, more than two months after our things were delivered and we notified Velvet Touch about the damage. I won't go through the numerous evasion and obfuscation tactics one by one, but suffice it to say these people will point the finger at anyone else, including US, to avoid any responsibility for all the damage they caused. If I had paid the normal $3,000-$5,000 cross-country move cost for a household of our small size, maybe I could understand having to eat some of the damage. But for over $13,000, no. The cross-country mover they subcontracted to was even worse. The nightmare began when they insisted, against our advice, to pull a too-large truck into our narrow driveway, snapping tree limbs and damaging one tree to the point I had to have it removed ($800). Then, putting things on their sides that we asked to remain upright, ripping moving blankets off things so fast they snapped veneer....it was heartbreaking to watch all our precious things get treated like junk from Ikea. And then Velvet Touch has the gaul to tell me that I chose these people! I had never even heard of them -- until, of course, I looked their reviews up on Yelp. You guessed it. Just as bad as Velvet Touch. I can only imagine that this other company pays a kickback to Velvet Touch, because there is no way their crude service could ever cost what we paid. So, after Kimon (the owner of Velvet Touch) tried to convince me on the phone that he was going to "take care of us," I harbored some hope. Turns out, what he meant was that he did not intend to have anything to do with our claim, and he was going to dump all the responsibility onto the other mover he sub-contracted to. Naturally, the other mover only wants to pay 30 cents a pound for damage. Well, when you have something lightweight and valuable that sustains thousands of dollars of damage, the $6 they pay to fix it doesn't really have much consequence, does it? So, if you are looking for a moving company that talks a good game and then turns completely away from their responsibility when they cause tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to your possessions, I heartily recommend you hire Velvet Touch. Improper packing, poor storage conditions, subcontracting to movers who are even lower quality than they, you can get all of this, all while paying astronomical sums of money for the privilege. And after they lay waste to your truly rare and special things, they'll make you work like a dog to get a check for a paltry few hundred dollar settlement. Do yourself a favor; hire anyone but these low-lives. read more

Velvet Touch was recommended to me by my cousin, who'd used them multiple times before. I was INCREDIBLY disappointed with them, as well as with the service thereafter. I noticed at the first apartment as they were unloading the elevator that the dining table had not been wrapped and was placed on the bare floor (and had been moved through the apartment, to the elevator, etc.). When I asked why the table hadn't been wrapped, the foreman said that it was because the TABLE WAS ALREADY SCRATCHED SO HE DIDN'T SEE A NEED TO WRAP IT. Apparently Velvet Touch movers believe that if a piece of furniture is already scratched, it's acceptable to scratch it further (and of course it did get scratched further after being dragged across the floor). Afterwards when I complained to Velvet Touch, I had to call and email almost a dozen times to get a response (and Kimon was incredibly rude when I did finally speak to him) which was ultimately unsatisfactory. I should also mention they were 1.5 hours late arriving. Overall, extremely disappointing service. I only used them initially because I needed to move a piece of furniture on short notice and they were the only company that was free - honestly, I should have taken it as a sign that other people know better to avoid them. read more

Great service! I was stood up by another moving company and called The Velvet Touch last minute at two minutes to six. Marianna answered and was so courteous and booked my job for the next day! The crew was amazing! They were clean cut and exceedingly professional good people. They really took so much stress off my shoulders. I can say with confidence The Velvet Touch went above and beyond from wrapping my paintings to not scuffing my walls carrying really heavy furniture to coming through in a pinch. I was an art dealer for years and used many specialty transport companies to move art worth six figures plus. This crew was just as good as those people. Not only was the move AWFUL (2 hours late, significant damage, missing and stolen items), but the team especially management is extremely rude, irrational and fraudulent operators. They actually altered my SIGNED credit card authorization to overcharge me. Criminal action!!! They have been reported to the better business bureau at this juncture. I moved large items from my home in NJ to my coop in NYC. I had several discussions by phone with the owner and negotiated a reasonable price. When the movers got my furniture into the coop, they were wonderful about putting together the couch and the bed and were honest about what they were unable to assemble. This company delivered a two piece sofa ($5000) and dining table ($1000) from Restoration Hardware (the store recommended them) and one of the pieces of sofa was damaged with a large puncture on the side that was black and went through the wrapping. After 3 weeks of back and forth about repairing it, there was no help and no resolution. I would never use this company again. read more
