I was in town for a work conference and ventured out on St Patrick's day to try some local bars. Stumbled by this place just walking around. This place is what you would expect for a dive bar. Cold, cheap drinks and great service!! Honestly the service was incredible. Super chill and friendly staff. There was live acoustic music but wasn't too loud so you could have a conversation with friends. Got some fried bar food which was also good. If I'm ever back in town, definitely will come here! read more

This is a great little dive bar. They don't have cocktail menus, which always throws me off because I'm not a creative cocktail orderer. Thank god my friend had a plan haha and ordered us the French 75. They have live music on weekends, but it's such a small place it's too loud to actually have a conversation. From their web site, "The Voodoo Lounge Bar & Grill was purchased by local blues musician Lance Almon Smith on April 6th, 2007. Having been a bar since the 1990s (previously named Judge Crater's and Tavern Under the Square) the location has a rich downtown history." I frequented this divey bar when it was Judge Craters and Tavern Under the Square - back in the day. To use the main entrance, you enter from the south side of the square at the entrance to Vinny's Indian & Greek Cuisine, then take the stairwell down, because yeah, it's underground. It's a long, narrow bar that can get packed. Meaning it can often be "standing room only." The corner "stage" area seems big enough for a just a solo artist, but I've seen bands comprised of 5 packed in that tiny area. The acoustics are not bad; however, when a band starts playing you can forget having any semblance of conversation at Voodoo. I think the ceiling tiles are really cool! They have at least one dart board if that's your jam. I don't recall them chargining a cover charge - but don't quote me on that. They serve up typical bar food and it's not bad! Checking their December calendar on their website, they have live music 7 nights a week [in December] usually 9PM - 1 AM. Pro tip: the hallway containing the bathrooms also has a "back door" entrance. If you park in the gravel lot at that entrance you've got free and almost always available parking! Service was eh, but it was probably cuz I'm Asian, and people here are mad racist. The bartender was stingy with the drinks, and it was served with a garnish of attitude, but the food made up for it. Definitely get some wings (all flavors were pretty good), the corn nuggets are a must, jalapeno poppers were fire, the onions rings were great and the mozz sticks were decent. There were some weirdo's here the night I came, but once I started eating, I stopped listening to whatever nonsense he was saying to me and grubbed. I was harassed by the bartender Kayla when I exited the bathroom when I visited this bar to meet up with friends. She vehemently asked me if I was speaking about her boyfriend (I definitely was not) and how she can't control what he says online. I asked her "do you think your boyfriend is a racist? Cause I don't know him at all". I guess she overheard my private conversation I was having earlier with my friends where my friend experienced racism online and the girlfriend of the racist was staying with them despite her activism in local social justice movements. I guess she felt triggered because she felt identified in my story? I'm not sure. I will be sharing this information with all local musicians, Huntsville Music Board and a few other organizations I work with regarding local live music in Huntsville. I hope the owners of Voo Doo correct this staffing and customer service issue as I have seen multiple bad reviews about this same waitress. There are other bartenders who have been more than fabulous and I have historically tipped 40-50% since I support my local businesses and advertise for local musicians. Not anymore. read more

Rudest bartender I have EVER encountered. My wife and I ordered two beers while my daughter was deciding. The bartender proceeded to bring us 3 beers. After informing her that we only ordered two, she basically called my wife a liar. After my wife said we would pay for it anyway, she slammed the full glass mug of beer either in the sink or garbage. Soon thereafter, she got into it with another paying customer while her "regulars" egged her on. Maybe if she wasn't slamming shots with customers, she could do her job. Staff was very rude band was not good Unfortunately our first visit and last. Being downtown was really cool but the staff weren't friendly, but they liked doing shots behind the bar. Whenever you wanted to drink, you definitely were interrupting them, and if you weren't part of the click, they definitely had nothing to do with you would not recommend this place to anybody. read more

Definitely a bar that will make you feel like a regular on your first time. They can make just about anything. The food here is consistently good. Try the corn nuggets! They have live music if you're into that. They do get insanely busy sometimes but as long as you can squeeze into the bar you'll get exactly what you order. read more

Wheew! The Voodoo Lounge is a breath of fresh air. Located in downtown Huntsville, this place is worth the trip! The bartenders are super sweet, and very attentive. Their prices are wallet friendly and the Voodoo Lounge has awesome drink specials. The bartender serves up all kinds of delicious shots and mixed drinks- such as the 'Dysfunctionator'...and my personal favorite, 'Grown Up Chocolate Milk'. Tehee. The bartender that served me should get an award for her delicious drinks. Seriously. Voodoo offers LIVE music almost every night. Poped in for a drink with co-workers while in town for work. Smokey, which you almost never encounter anymore. But because you never encounter it anymore, its really gross. Also, the place itself had a sorta grimy feel. Not a "dive bar cool" layer of grime, but plain old filth. Also, really expensive. Not a great place. This place had been my go local bar for the best music and service for almost 20 years. Through name changes, ownership changes, bartender changes, the atmosphere and level of service were always good.... until last night! It was packed at as usual but there seemed to be only one female bartender that was trying her best to keep up with everyone while the other bartender mostly hung out in the kitchen. Many customers were starting to get seriously annoyed. I even mentioned to the other bartender in the kitchen when I passed while leaving that "she seems to really need your help out there." Must have been a joke, because I got laughted at. I live downtown, I don't get out much, and when I do, I have chosen voodoo for years. Makes me seriously sad to second guess my choice over one staff member that doesn't seem to care how the customer experience goes. read more

Located in the basement of Papou's on the Southside of the square in Downtown Huntsville, it remains one of Huntsville's hidden gems. The staff is always friendly and very knowledgeable. There's live music 6 nights a week and karaoke on Sundays. This has to be the worst bar I've ever entered. Lily was the WORST bartender ever. Coming from a bartender myself, saying that you'll be right with a customer but then taking more orders before coming back to him from your little "friend" group that she wasn't even charging drinks for is pretty shitty. The amount of shots she took while I was there for maybe 30-45 minutes was insane. I'm confused on how they get away with inventory being completely off. I saw a lot of people walk out because she was literally ignoring everyone except her so called friends. She was on her phone with her back turned to the bar several times. I tried to order a second drink and she ended up taking my order but going to take her friend group order and never made my drink. I paid for my food when I got my drinks and it never got sent to the kitchen. This place needs new management who actually cares about their customers and new bartenders who aren't stuck up a certain group of peoples ass. If you're looking for a hole-in-the-wall, underground, this is your place. The place is dirty, grimy, the patrons are all young but friendly, and it's way longer than wider, but man was it fun to be in. They had live music the night we went and played a couple of 80s tunes (which surprised me for the median age of the crowd.) The beer selection was minimal, but all good. And I have to say it was a nice change of place for all the "hipster" kinda joints - these greasy-type of places I really do enjoy. read more

Being from NY this place was a great find. It's very much like a lil dive bar in the east village yet not...cuz ur in huntsville. Dark, very old looking this place still had an awesome vibe to it. Everyone seemed very friendly especially the bartender. There are a few dart boards in the back bt chances are there will be a live band and you'll want to stick around and listen. The two times Ive been here they have been great. I guess the only draw back is how much the smoke lingers in there. I'm not use to that so it could be that im just a lil bitch when it comes to smoke but in a way in kinda added to the vibe there somehow. You should def. give this place a try. read more

These people don't know their ass from their head. Went in for Happy Hour one day and had 3 Miller lights. When I cashed out the bartender said my tab was $9 and some change. I asked why so much since I was there for Happy hour and he said it was 7:05 and happy hour was over. When he saw my reaction and realized he wasn't going to get one over on me he quickly changed his tune and told me the right amount of $5.75. I don't go there often and it's the second time I was overcharged so I've come to the conclusion that if you're not a regular and the bartenders don't know or recognize you they will try to rip you off and over charge you. read more

I was a little disappointed in their lack of wine offerings but they might just not offer much and it was our first time so we didn't know what to expect. Voodoo Lounge is the trendy hipster/musician bar in Huntsville. It has a really good vintage atmosphere and the best local music you'll be able to hear on the weekend. The small, hidden basement entrance really gives the place style. You can easily imagine listening to the Alabama Shakes give an unpublicized concert here. However, there are some downsides. The space is extremely narrow and long, which is fine for a quaint lounge, but this place is a vibrant music bar. It makes for cumbersome movement, claustrophobia, and significant noise amplification. The light can be a little harsh & your clothes need to be washed immediately after spending more than 5 minutes here. You may also wish you had earplugs during the band, which sort of defeats the purpose of going to a bar. read more

The Voodoo Lounge is definitely one of my favorite spots in town. The atmosphere is very unique for Huntsville. The bar is fairly small, which for me makes it feel very comfortable and is really great for live music. The bands can really be "in your face" if you want to be close to the action. I've seen all sorts of bands play here, from Blues to Punk. The bartenders are always very friendly and the drink prices are very fair. We were in Huntsville looking for a good place to have a few beers and unwind on a Tuesday night. Not expecting much because it was a Tuesday night, we walked into a relatively empty bar but to our surprise there were a couple of guitars on the stage. Shortly after two very talented guys got up and started playing, bringing in more people.... and taking very few breaks. I wish I could remember their names to support them but they did have an ongoing joke about the bartender joining them and calling the band Hairnet Underwear.
