Walk Shop has seriously declined. The soles of my expensive shoes totally CRUMBLED the first day I wore them and they took no responsibility. True, the shoes had been in a shoebox in my closet for over a year before I wore them, but still they shouldn't have fallen apart on day one of wearing them. That my receipt was over a year old was their reason for taking no responsibility, but they could have done something. Manager suggested I could take them to a repair shop that might be able to do something, but look at my photo and you'll see there's no place left to attach new soles. He didn't even say sorry, let alone offer a discount on another pair or anything. Back in the '90s-mid-2000s, the Walk Shop used to take good care of my shoes (example: replacing velcro), indeed they practically on doing the maintenance themselves. They kept several pairs going over multiple-year periods and didn't say "too bad" but it's your problem. I had come to expect good service from the Walk Shop back then, but clearly this is no longer true. I noticed some other one-star reviews from other long-time customers saying they wouldn't go back. The Walk Shop is the place I go when I need a pair of shoes. The staff is knowledgeable, attentive, and albeit the shoes are pricey, they are of good quality. I have only had good purchasing experiences with The Walk Shop. Once I had to exchange some boots which were too small (I had to go up a half size), and they facilitated the exchange without a hitch. My husband and I were treated very well here. We were helped by Danna who gave us the rundown on some basic footwear facts. She listened to our needs, our preferences, and our feelings. We never felt rushed or pushed into making a purchase. I only, only wish the shop was open a bit later than 6pm. I don't know if there are ways to offer shoes that are just as quality or of similar quality in a more mid-range price, but I certainly respect the fact that sometimes quality just costs a bit more. Excellent place for comfortable shoes. I have multiple contradicting needs for my shoe fit. Wide toes, narrow heels, giant calves, tiny ankles. And I yearn to wear CUTE fashionable shoes. Sometimes a miracle happens and I find shoes that fit. Other times I try shoes for hours and walk away with nothing. Just before Thanksgiving, I spent several hours at The Walk Shop. On two separate occasions, the staff and owner helped me try on countless different styles and sizes. I bought some, took them home, brought them back and tried others. I consider this place to be a spot for miracles. I not only found four pairs of shoes that fit comfortably and were formal enough to wear for work, but I also found a pair of boots that I fell in love with on the spot. They aren't big enough in the calves, so I'm on a quest to have them adjusted. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the selection is excellent. Go check them out! read more

And to cement our unending arch support for people of all sexes, races and creeds we established the walk shop. Great "old-style" service, with the shoe horn and the guy that sits on the little stool and laces up the shoes for you. He even presses down on the front of your shoe to see how close your big toe is to the front of the shoe. The last time I received that type of service in a shoe store was when I was a kid. I was so happy to find such comfortable shoes that I bought 4 pairs! The shoes aren't cheap, but I didn't find them to be priced higher than other stores that specialize in walking shoes. read more

I found that the selection of all types of footwear was extensive and well displayed, and the friendly staff was most helpful. My impression is that these folks really know their stuff. I bought a pair of walking shoes and after 3 months of heavy use( 3 to 11 miles a day) the back of the shoe came apart inside where my heel rides. This did not seem right, so I took them back. The gentleman helping me went into the back and came back with the owner I assume, he promptly offered me another pair. This is the sort of customer service that seems lost these days. Went to The Walk Shop to see about the credit (see owners' response to previous review). The manager was very nice and helpful. He called the manufacturer and got approval to settle the issue on the spot although the manufacturer's invoice had not yet been received. I got a new pair of sandals and am very happy with the result of this transaction. I chose a pair of sandals by a different manufacturer, one that I trust because I bought a pair of their sandals (Romika) 6 or 7 years ago at The Walk Shop and, although they are worn, they are still serviceable all these years later. I'm glad this worked out well because I have always liked The Walk Shop and really want to patronize local businesses rather than buy on line. It's worth spending a bit more to keep our communities vital and thriving. Good job Walk Shop! read more

Salesman is super weird. Went in looking for shoe laces. Kid at the counter didn't have any black ones and I said "Okay, no problem" as I started my exit. Kid at the counter says "Sorry," and that's when some other salesman says "No we're not." Another saleswoman near by laughs. Both have weird smiles on their faces. Did they realize that was an unusual thing to say? Never coming here again. read more

I buy about 2 pair of shoes per year---last time I was in there I bought Ecco walking shoes and Romica sandals. I spent 2 weeks tramping thru Italy and my feet never bothered me. Yay! You guys over there at the Walk Shop Rock! I was in there last weekend and bought a pair of Dansko clogs. WOW! I have not been this comfortable in 20 years. I have post neurological pain in my legs and feet (from a spinal tumor surgery), the arch, and toes cramp as well as my calves. I have been wearing the wrong shoes for decades (priority on style). The Dansko's are very trendy so I do not worry about not being stylish. I love these shoes, I have worn them everyday since I bought them. My posture has improved (love how your feet do not role) I have slept so well, I don't wake up in the middle of the night with painful leg and feet cramps. If I'd have known that a $120 pair of shoes could solve all my pain problems I would have visited you much sooner then last weekend. My husband had a pair when we first met (10 years ago) and I teased him for having them, ignorance is bliss I'm afraid :( now he smiles at me with intent superiority. It's OK, I deserve it. I'm aware that you can purchase these shoes at multiple retailers. However, I will continue to shop at your store because of the personal one on one service. The sales associate/managers knowledge of shoes and FEET is superior to any store I have ever visited. I look forward to seeing you all again for my next pair. I think I'll get the brown pair next. My Mom asked me if I will wear my shoes with evening gowns...I may do that! To finally be comfortable and not have to sit down constantly is priceless. Needed "interview shoes" that I could walk in. The person who instantly approached and helped me, Mallory, was very sweet, courteous and efficient. I complimented Mallory's service to one of the gentlemen working there who agreed and told me that she was headed off to do Acupuncture and that they will miss her terribly. I left with best wishes for my interview from several members of the staff as I wished Mallory all the best at Acupuncture. I recently broke my foot (pretty severely in three places); I was placed on "no weight bearing" and crutches for at least 6 to 8 weeks. The first week, my other foot got very sore and started to swell (I was working from home and gimping around barefoot). My doctor recommended that I NOT go around barefoot and should get some good, supportive walking or hiking shoes, one of which I could wear around the house (along with my boot on the broken foot). I called The Walk Shop and spoke to Julian, who recommended several different shoes (it was not feasible to drive to Berkeley, so he spent some time with me on the phone, trying to figure out my needs and sizing, etc). I researched them all, and the next day, I called and left a message with what I thought would work best for me (that was over the weekend). On Monday, Melissa called me back - she was SO helpful, and actually recommended a different shoe than the one I picked, based on what my current needs were as well as the future (for when I start to rehab my broken foot). I went with what she recommended (Hoka); she shipped them to me that same day, and I received them 2 days later. They are so very comfortable, and have given my "good foot" the support and comfort it needs. I highly recommend their expert and CARING advice! read more

They don't stand behind their products. I will not shop there again. Six months ago I bought a pair of men's shoes there for $200. The salesperson assured me that the shoes were very high-quality, would last a long time, and would shed water so that my feet would never get wet. The shoes soaked up water like sponges and transmitted it directly to my feet. I called them about this and they were evasive, didn't show any concern for my happiness as a customer, and essentially refused to do anything to help me. Luckily it never rains in Berkeley in the summer so this issue has not been urgent for the past few months. Now, the soles of the shoes have cracked across the ball of the foot. I called them and expressed my extreme displeasure that this happened after a mere six months of ownership. Again, the person was evasive, refused to discuss even the spectrum of possible solutions to my complaint, and showed no concern for my satisfaction as a customer. I'm very disappointed both in the shoe and in the Walk Shop. I do not recommend shopping there. read more

The Walk Shop's advertising is very effective. When I needed some comfortable shoes it was the first place I thought of. The experience of shopping there left much to be desired. The first time I went in the service was not good. The store was not super-busy, but the staff didn't seem overly eager to help me. I went back a second time (probably my last) to buy a pair of VERY expensive shoes. They had a fairly minor flaw on them and I asked if they could take care of it. No. The saleswoman was somewhat apologetic, but did not appear to make any effort to seek a discount or to amend the situation. I paid full price for the shoes because they only had one pair in my size. I expressed my feeling that when you pay that much for a pair of shoes you expect them to be perfect, and she gave me a suggestion for how I could take care of the problem myself. While they have a huge selection of shoes, I have a narrow foot and they don't carry narrow shoes. Based on their advertisement of their selection, I would assume that they would also have a broad selection of sizes. They don't. This was a very disappointing shopping experience. read more

After my podiatrist recommended I get some different shoes to help my achy feet (I'm only 27!) I visited the Walk Shop. Bought 3 pairs of shoes to cover the basics. 1 boot, 1 sandal, 1 tennis shoe. It was really pricey, and I ended up forking over around $600 on one lunch break's worth of shopping. They told me that I could return them after up to 3 weeks as long as I didn't wear them outside. I dutifully brought 2 pairs of shoes with me daily, so I could wear the fancy orthopedic ones during the work day, and switch out as I left the office. This was a pretty big hassle, but with feet in pain and $600 on the line, I stuck it out. With almost 3 weeks up I was ready to commit to all 3 pairs, but one day when I pulled the sandal out of my purse to put it on, the ankle strap was missing. This was a fancy strap with this weird clasp thingamajigger, so I couldnt easily replace it. I was so bummed. After all that effort, I still was out a complete pair of shoes. Somehow during all that shoe shuffling, the strap must have fallen somewhere. I knew it was a long shot to ask them to replace a strap that was my fault for losing, but when I told them about my issue, they not only completely replaced the shoe, but they also widened it and sent it off to a cobbler to permanently attach the strap so this wouldn't happen again. They were also sensitive to the fact that I was going on a beach vacation soon, and made sure I got the replacement sandal from the manufacturer and cobbler in time. So while they're quite pricey, my feet feel much better, and if you're willing to put up with the hassle of try before you buy, you can feel secure buying a more expensive shoe that may fix your foot pain. *PS, Forgot to mention, this was the first place I've ever been where they had wide versions of every shoe I wanted to try on in stock! read more

I've come here for years and never been disappointed in the selection or the comfort of their shoes. Lots to choose from, and a really knowledgeable staff with details about the shoes you are trying on, which you'd never get anywhere else. I recently had Mickey as my 'shoe concierge' and had a great experience. I came in for one pair of sandals and liked the selections she brought out so much that I wound up buying three pair, which will last me a long time, I know. The shoes from here are so well made, many of them European, and an increasing number of beautifully made American shoes. I want to confirm what previous reviewers have found, that the service here is rude. I dropped in for the first time in many years on a weekday this past week , thinking it was time to check out comfortable shoes, and I actually found something half-stylish to try on. The salesman -- by his looks, probably a senior one -- took minimum time fitting me, argued with me about my past negative experiences with certain brands he personally liked, declined to let me try shoes on unless I was ready to buy them, and dumped me for the next customer even while I was trying to ring up a pair! I walked out without buying, with the shoes sitting next to the register while a younger salesperson stationed there also ignored me! I'm sticking with Nordstrom's shoes - their service is wonderful and their selection is superior. read more

I have lived in Berkeley for over 20 years and stopped frequenting the Walk Shop many years ago due to rude customer service. A few years ago, after foot surgery and desperate for comfortable shoes, I girded myself for entry into the place again. I was so happy to find a nice saleswoman by the name of Selena from whom I bought several pairs of shoes. She always listened patiently to my bad feet stories and found decent shoes. Today, I learned she no longer works there and my experience in the store was similar to that of many years ago. I found the sales people Inattentive with no understanding of how to find comfortable shoes for people with foot problems. I guess I will make the trek to On the Run in the Sunset. read more

Great shoes but really aggressive salespeople. While I love the shoes here, I often avoid going in unless there are a lot of people in the store so I can browse on my own with the constant pressure. Once you ask to try on a shoe, be aware that the sales people will be in full gear and if you decide - despite their pressure tactics - that you're not interested, they'll close up the box in half a second and brusquely move on. Very rude and not too strategic since I've dropped hundreds here in the past but am more likely to go to zappos from now on. read more

I'm sorry to those of you that genuinely believe that these people really care because when you leave they say things like "good job sellin' him! I wouldda bet my mortgage that he wasn't gonna buy anything!" and if you don't get anything they complain about how you made them get out all these shoes and wasted their time and you really shouldn't shop if you aren't going to buy...this is a window shopping kinda area, the shoe salesmen really need to chill out and appreciate being nice to customers and knowing that customers will come back with friends later if they are nice...nice shoes give them one star but the mean and fake people that work here is what made me write this review...if you don't mind knowing that they WILL say something about you when you leave (and from what I can tell it's always bad, even if you buy something) this is your store!
