Rejoined the YMCA again after Covid, back doing the water classes for my joints. All the water classes are fun and enjoyable! Instructors and music make the class fly by - Kim is just so entertaining, she mixes up the music, movements are easy to follow with her precise directions, she makes you laugh, makes it fun. I have been trying for 6 months to cancel my elderly father's membership and they are still charging him. He's 91 years old and has been in the hospital, but that isn't enough for someone to help with this situation. I also went up there in person because they said you have to cancel in person, yet here it is the 1st and he has been charged AGAIN!!! DO NOT JOIN THIS ORGANIZATION... I feel like at this point they are taking advantage of him due to his age!!! read more

Ready to end my membership and join an actual gym instead of a family center.. bunch of little kids getting in the way in the weight room, poor equipment and machines, and overall just mediocre. My previous review was generous, because I genuinely like the center. Unfortunately the situation I had mentioned in my previous review escalated to the point of harassment outside of the facility today. The same employee who harassed me last time took it upon herself to literally run me out of the gym today. The first time she approached me I was on the treadmill. She did not approach anyone else in the gym, but she asked me if I needed help using the new treadmills. Be for real. I knew what her game was. I assumed she was going to harass me about my outfit (black jacket, black leggings) so I quickly said "no" and turned away. Spoiler Alert: she did eventually "scold" me like my last encounter. I kept to myself in the group x room, alone, but on my way out she chased me down the hallway, I IGNORED her because I was leaving, and I did not do anything wrong. Then I sat in my car and wrote an email to the center because I felt singled out and harassed. It got worse. Her shift ended, as the gym was closed, and while I was sitting in my car she pulled up to me in her personal vehicle and HONKED THE HORN. I rolled down my window, and sure enough, she wanted to tell me about the NO MIDRIFF policy. While I was in my car. In my own vehicle. Is this normal behavior - for employees to follow members to their cars? After they are off the clock? As I mentioned before, I am GROWN. I am 30. I cannot imagine how terrible it would feel for a younger girl to be in my predicament. Being FOLLOWED to her car. Harassment and sexism aside, FOLLOWING a member to their car to harass them after you're off work should be grounds to be fired. The unwelcome and unsafe conditions do not align with what I thought the YMCA's values were. Young women be warned -- this is not a friendly place for you. read more

I travel a lot around the state for work so I try to get a work out in wherever I can. I got a free workout coupon for this place and finally had an afternoon to myself. The Y in my hometown is ok so I gave it a shot. Front desk experience was pleasant. Locker rooms were clean. Easy to navigate areas. On my way to the gym section, I was met with an overwhelming wave of marijuana smell. Hello! Either in a utility room or at the exit door, someone just finished toking up. Ok.... The gym is mediocre. Very quiet/no music. I said hello to one of the gym attendants and got no response. The place promotes itself as a family oriented nonprofit business. Yeah, my family won't be going anywhere near this place. read more

I actually like the facility as a whole, HOWEVER, compared to some of the other facilities, like the Pasadena YMCA this location is seriously lacking. I think the rates needs to be adjusted to match the home location. This one, compared go the Pasadena YMCA is small for the population base that attends and is in dire need of a huge renovation. The pool is small, the locker rooms are small, the equipment floor is cramped. They did not prepare for the population growth of Harford County. read more

The facility has many programs to serve families, however as of June 24th 2019, I witnessed when they made a change to programming the first day of a new schedule, kicked several young African American members out onto the street, lowered the rim then spoke to them degradingly. As a result, the Y decided to get security to protect others members as the predominately African American-Black young men who are also members, playing a sport for pleasure and exercise. I like the gym location and the new pool. I just do not like M-F after 5 PM the middle and high school kids are annoying and they actually RUN the place. The Y staff can not control the kids they are loitering in the lobby they fight and extremely loud in the basketball gym. Besides that great gym! read more

No classes for seniors. The Everfit class which is described as for seniors is far too difficult for seniors to do. I checked around the room and most participants, me included, were unable to keep up. Having participated in senior aerobics for years, I thought I would have no problem but this class is definitely not for seniors. I just hope no one gets seriously injured trying to keep up. The exercise equipment room is great and I had my first session with a man who was near my age and he helped set up a very doable program for me. I'm just disappointed that none of the classes other than chair yoga are suitable for seniors. Read response and wanted to add that I attended three classes all described as suitable for all levels. Definitely not true. In all classes, it was quite clear that most attendees were not able to keep up. I am certain that someone will be seriously injured in one of these classes. I will continue with chair yoga but the other two classes suggested are water classes which I do not want to do in the winter. The Y needs to assess who is attending theses daytime classes and accommodate so that attendees can participate without risk of injury. read more

Gym is nice and clean and nice weights. However, the locker room are disgusting. Mainly the bathrooms. Urine all over the floor all the time, water everywhere and hair. The counters are constantly dirty with water all over the counter tops. It maybe the most disgusting bathroom in Harford County. Not happy with the cleaning of the bathrooms to say the least!! Great value for your money. The other gyms in the area are overpriced. The YMCA has good employees, nice equipment, lots of classes to choose from, personal training options, a daycare on site, and a brand new pool. And again, the price is unbeatable. Definitely worth every penny! read more

Unless you are planning on getting there at 530 on weekdays, this is not the place for serious swimmers. Despite having published lap swimming hours with set number of lanes in their website, they never live up to nor enforce them. You will find yourself fighting through hordes of toddlers in the swim lanes or being forced to share the one lane actually being used for lap swimming despite 3 or more reserved for it. read more

I'm a big fan of this facility. The gym is always super clean, the staff are usually super friendly, and most of them are quite knowledgeable. There is a climbing wall (if that's your thing), but it's usually occupied by kids, this is not a climbing gym. There's a swimming facility, with an Olympic style lap pool (not sure of the exact dimensions), and also kiddy pools. There are tons of classroom facilities, and many classes offered. The only downside is the hours, they close at 10pm during the week, (which is reasonable, but I'd totally go later if they were open later), and at 7pm on the weekends, which is quite early. Also, they have very few classes in the evening. Their weekend classes are also concentrated in the mornings. I'm not a morning person, I want 8pm classes and late gym hours, but I know I'm not the majority of gym-going clientele. They were also quite receptive to feedback I provided along these lines. 8pm to 10pm is a pretty nice time to swing through, as the daycare (I think?) facility closes at 8pm, so most of the parents leave, and the workout facilities get significantly less crowded. read more

Great place! Friendly staff and above average state of the art equipment. Classes are challenging, fun and engaging. They have healthy juices to aid in your recovery or for an energy boost. They have also expanded the menu to include healthy tasty edibles. The reason why I didn't give them 5 stars is they could use some diversity with the music selection for spin class. All rock/metal music makes that class especially hard. Maybe offer spin hip hop class once a week. It would be greatly appreciated! We always leave that class complaining about the music. read more

Been a member for many years now and still not happy with their swim test rules. They are way to stringent criteria's for young children who can swim but are not pro perfect swimmers. My child just wants to go on the slide and I will watch him the entire time. I understand these rules are for safety reasons and not all parents watch their children, but at the same time you do not have to be a pro swimmer to go down a slide. My son knows enough not the drown and in the end isn't that the point. He can do all the swim test criterias, however he is not 100% perfect at it. He can make it from one end of the pool to the other doing breast stroke with his arms, but since his feet are not perfect they wont pass him. He can thread water for the 1 mins and float on his back. I just think this this is ridiculous we aren't going for Olympic gold here, we are just trying to have him go down a slide and I know he knows enough to not drown while going down it. They really need to change this polices or get rid of the slide or add on for small children. The average child is not going to do swim strokes to perfections and not every child on swim team does it correctly. For my older son he has passed his swim test and they still seem to give us issue when we go with him saying they cant find his name and want him to retest. After arguing they finally find his name but their is always an issues. If you want to enforce your policies so hard their should be a manager their at all times during swim test and their is not. read more

Not happy at all about the way the girl Natalie at the rock wall treated me and my kids tonight!! She was VERY rude and had a NASTY attitude!! Very upsetting!! Especially when we made it out tonight for specifically the rock wall my kids went once and we left! she definitely took all of the fun out of the whole experience not only for my kids but for a group of other children also! I hope she will not be here the next time we come! read more

So today I decided to take my two kids to the family pool. As always, I called in before heading out to be sure of the pool hours, due to the lack of information I had in past experiences. Talked to Marie on the phone and confirmed the hours. 25 minutes later, the lifeguard asks us to get out of the pool because the Y campers were ready to use the pool. I was shocked because the receptionist confirmed that the family pool would be open until 2:00pm to everyone. Well, I asked to talked to the person in charge of the pool, he/she was nowhere to be found. Both of my kids were very, very upset because they waited all morning and we weren't able to stay as planned. Like I said, it's not the first time it has happened and it's very frustrating because when you have kids, they're in schedule and it's very unfair you get kicked out of the pool with your kids. It's not nice. And of course, employees aren't doing their job correctly. Also I noticed the times we have been there, the bucket, splashing rings and all the water fun activities are always off. As soon as the campers were ready to get in, they turn on all the games. Again very disappointing. We are paying a monthly fee just like everyone else so be more fair to everyone. We started our membership at the Y in Towson and we never had any problems. Im extremely disappointed for the last's visits we have had. Maybe it's time to take our membership somewhere else. read more

I really used to like going here, but I since they added the pool, I dislike that 1) the lifeguards, most of which are teenagers, socialize and flirt with each other instead of watching the pools diligently. It is beyond negligent, and 2) the lifeguards let people block the lap lanes just hanging out. They do not enforce the lap lanes or lane courtesy when people are there swimming laps. I was told by one group of very loud adults that were hanging out and blocking the lap lanes to "slow my roll" when I, and several other lap swimmers, asked them kindly several times to please move so we could swim laps. We went to the lifeguards, but they did nothing. A few of us ended up leaving instead of finishing our swim. I really want to go here more, but they need to get the pool area more in control or I'm going to just join the Arena Club. read more

I have been a member here for a few years, but have been using it more in the past few months than I have ever before. I'm paying for the membership, why not use it? At first, I was just using it for the cardio equipment and occasionally the weights and pool, but now I have been using it for the classes and taking advantage of the Stay & Play for my kids while I work out. The gym itself is really clean and the front desk staff is friendly. The equipment is new and they upgrade the cardio equipment pretty often (I think they lease it for a year or two and then trade it in). The last time I brought my kids to the daycare while I worked out was over a year ago and I think they were just too little to be away from me. So when I did come, I left them at home with my husband. A few weeks ago I brought them back and they were okay for the one hour while I worked out. So now I will be taking advantage of the daycare here since there were no tears. :) Make sure you bring in your ID if you plan on using the daycare. They will hold it while they keep your kids and give it back when you pick them up. The swimming pool is great and I used it all summer to train for my first triathlon (which never happened because it was cancelled the day before, but oh well) and it was wonderful. Our kids are also enrolled in swimming lessons here at the Y and the kids pool is wonderful. There is a slide, pool noodles (just ask the lifeguards for them) and buckets that spill out water every minute or so. Make sure you check the schedule online before coming because there are certain times that the pool is open for different activities. I have taken Body Pump, cycling, Body Sculpt, Cardio Kickboxing and yoga. All of the instructors are great and are really helpful. I can't remember her name, but the older blonde lady that teaches Body Pump (and Body Sculpt and Cardio Kickboxing) is super nice and helpful. She is fantastic, too! I hope to be that energetic and strong when I am her age! The first time in all my classes, the instructors asked if anyone needed help setting up and made me feel really comfortable. Taking a class, especially if it's your first time, can be really intimidating, but the instructors here are wonderful and I felt included. All the equipment for the classes are provided, so you don't need to bring anything except a water bottle! I brought my own mat for yoga, but they provide those if you don't have one. The list of classes available is pretty extensive. I really want to try the barre class, but so far it's only available in the middle of the day when I'm at work, so I hope they add it to the schedule in the evenings. Tip: If you are an employee at Johns Hopkins (and probably some other places), you can get a $15 discount each month off your membership. I think the Y is already priced pretty well since it includes the gym, pool, daycare and classes, but this $15 discount really makes it worth it for us! read more

I love this Y! I tend to do a lot of group classes - cycle, yoga, etc. I typically go to the gym in the early morning when it's not crowded. It a definite community feeling here and members and staff genuinely care about you, and as a result I've made a lot of friends here, since moving to Harford Co. For a family of 4 this is a GREAT value. read more

I joined for the pool for over the first year exclusively for week end lap swimming. I ran into an old dear friend asking her to share lane with me. Carol encouraged me to swim week nights , now fitlinxx, Pebble, strength training , cycling class, kick box, and what is next Carol? It is fun and everybody is nice but not to nice. I joined in April for all of the adult swimming classes and I LOVE THEM ! The teachers are Wonderful and funny and caring and the lifeguards though young have all been Sweet and kind . Every single person I have met there has been Great ! All of the Ladies and the couple of gentlemen in my classes are Sweet & funny and caring and with the teachers & lifeguards and class folks it feels like an extended Family . I Really Miss the Days when I can not make it in . The people Greet you with a Friendly Hi when you first walk through the door just to start you off feeling good . I hope as my Health gets better I can move to more of the many things they have to offer there . Since Swimming my Health has improved a good bit and I have lost 29 pounds and feel stronger and have more energy than I have in a long time . I Still have a long way to go but The kindness & support I get there keeps me coming back . It was the best Decision I have made in years and way worth the monthly fee ~ a LOT cheaper and Healthier than medications ! read more

Personally, I had a less than ideal experience at this YMCA - in fact it was down right discriminatory, which was very upsetting especially since the organization says they uphold the values of care, respect, honesty, and responsibility. Let me begin by noting, I am pregnant and I joined this particular Y in Dec. 2013, so I can swim, which is a safe and approved activity by my doctors for pregnant women. Initially, I had a great experience. I was able to swim 3-4 times/week and felt pretty safe there, but then January came and swimming in the afternoon lap lane hours got more difficult. The lifeguards were not enforcing the lap lane pool rules, allowing kids to come in and out of the lanes as they pleased, while others waited to use a lap lane to really lap. Now, again, I was able to tolerate all of this until the kids jumping in and out of the lanes, landed on me at 22 weeks of pregnancy. I got nailed in the back and stomach by a girl and a boy who were almost the same size as me (I am only 5'0 110#). When the lifeguard saw this, instead of telling the kids to leave the pool and to see if I was okay, he just looked me and said, "What do you want me to do about it? It's not like I knew they were going to do that?" and proceeded to go right back to flirting/talking to the other female lifeguard. At that time, I immediately reported the incident to the front desk and director. The only one who apologized about the incident was the girl at the front desk - I have still yet to hear an apology from the director - I can't say for sure if it was Kelly or Mary Beth that I reported it to. The next day, I had to call them back to find out what was the resolution - this was at 5pm by the way and all I got told was that the lifeguard was spoken to and to note any more incidents to Phil the aquatics director. At that time, I then proceeded to change my swim time to the 5:30 AM time slot to possibly reduce my risk of being jumped on by kids. Well, I did reduce my chances of injury from kids but failed to note that adults can be just as much of a potential risk. This risk came when adult swimmers would join my lap lane - unannounced, and start swimming next to me. I had gotten kicked twice (obviously not deliberately), but it would have been nice to have been warned ahead of time they were in the lane so I could move over more. Once I got into my third trimester, the risk of abdominal trauma got even more scarier and I was tired of being startled/kicked by unannoucned swimmers. So, I asked Phil what could be done to help me swim more safely in the pool since swimmers did not ask me typically before they joined my lane and if it was possible to let me swim alone for the 20 minutes I am there to not risk any potential trauma to my abdomen. Again, Phil offered no real solutions, aside from coming during a time that was less busy and letting the lifeguards know I was pregnant. Since my previous experiences with the lifeguards were less than ideal, I knew that was not going to work. So, I made a sign for my lane and put it next to my towel, which stated "I'm pregnant and prefer not to share a lane to protect myself and my baby. Thank you for your understanding." To say the least, the next time I came the lifeguard informed me that Phil did not want me using this sign because he never approved it and other members could do the same thing. When I asked what did Phil offer as a solution for my safety, the lifeguard didn't have an answer. The lifeguard did offer though to stand by my lane and let other swimmers know not to swim in it, which was nice - but it was a one time deal. To say the least, I felt humiliated and discriminated against. I had done everything I could do to be safe while swimming and never once did the directors offer a solution (which would have been temporary) aside from me always having to change my schedule around. I finally just gave up and terminated my membership because well - I'm pregnant - and I don't have the energy or time to keep asking what can be done. I was basically on my own. So, thank you Walter and Betty Ward "Y" for this nightmare of an experience - I will move on to another gym! read more
