Don't be deceived by the name or the pretty font, the Waverly Tea Rooms is sadly not a teahouse. To be fair, the Waverley (a bar and restaurant) has a sedate and subdued atmosphere most of the time, but this is usually through circumstance rather than choice. The truth is that it is yet another slightly soulless member of the G1 franchise. The drinks are ridiculously expensive (especially the beer I believe) and the clientele (especially at the weekend) are proud members of the white shirted brigade - men with ludicrously gelled back hair, overwhelming aftershave and a liking for labels who think that standing at the bar holding a £20 note will get them served quicker. It is popular for a reason though. It is one of the few pubs in the south side that opens past 12 during the week. Plus, its conservatory and beer garden means that it is as good a place as any to enjoy a leisurely afternoon in the sun. However, I would stay away at the weekend as it becomes cramped and uncomfortable. There are better things to do of an evening than stand in a corner shouting over rubbish music, whilst your friend queues for half an hour for a £4 drink. read more

Oh dear. Things were not looking up from the start. We wanted Sunday lunch but couldn't get into our first choice restaurant so we headed here. On entry we were informed that the card machine was broken so we would have to pay cash. No problem, technical problems happen. Then we ordered drinks. Nothing complex just cokes, diet cokes, lemonades. These took forever to arrive and when we enquired with the absent waitress (we had to go into the bar) she wasn't in the least bit apologetic as she barked that they were coming. We ordered food, at the same time as drinks, from the menu imaginatively clipped to pieces of old wine crate - nice touch except that A4 is larger than the board so the menus were tatty round the edge (again, not a deal breaker but symptomatic of worse problems to come!). The propaganda at the beginning described something about the proprietor's love of food (he obviously doesn't eat here very often). Like so many others I went for the 'Famous Sunday Roast' which was shocking. The roast pork loin was ok - not over cooked - but the 'seasonal veg' were non existent. I had peas and carrots which had painfully obviously been frozen (rubbery carrots - eugh). Carrots might be seasonal but peas - not in January. What about some Kale or cabbage? The potatoes weren't great, but by this time we were so exhausted by the waiting for everything that we couldn't be bothered to send it back. We just wanted to leave. As a final salute to terrible restaurants, as she neared the bottom of her green salad, my friend found a hair mixed in with the leaves. On drawing this to the waitress' attention, she wasn't greeted with an outpouring of apology but an indifferent grunt. No 'comped' salad for us then. We finally fished out the loose change (remember no card machine) to make the bill exactly (no a snowball's chance in hell of a tip) and left. I've been a frequent visitor to the Waverley Tea Rooms since it opened back in 2004 but it had been 6 months since my last visit so popped in with a friend on Saturday evening for a some eats. The bar was busy with kids utilising the soft play areas. Nice that they have somewhere welcoming but a noticeable change from a place that was formerly a bit more drinks oriented. Service was really good, the bar staff a lot more professional and attentive than I felt they'd been on previous visits. Menus were swiftly delivered and orders taken and the subsequent wait for our meals did not seem overlong. We ordered the Chicken Ceasar as a main course and a portion of Fish and Chips. The latter was a fairly small fillet served in a basket atop a bed of chunky chips. The fish looked more frozen then fresh but served with sides of mushy peas and tartare sauce was pleasant enough tasting. My partner gave the Ceasar a thumbs up and it looked a good plate of food from where I sat. For pud we ordered the Chocolate Fudge Cake with Ice Cream and a portion of New York Cheesecake. On previous visits I've had the burger and have to agree with some other reviewers that it is pretty decent The food was fairly standard G1 fare and not unpleasant but I felt for the money wasn't particularly great value. There are a host of pub/eateries across the city offering food with a bit more creativity and flavour at this price point. Although a big plus was the service was excellent. I may seem a little harsh on giving a three star rating but I just feel that at this price point the food scene in the city has move beyond what's on offer here. read more

A small group of us went to this place before the Scotland match, after calling around and finding most places (unsurprisingly) booked up until after kickoff. The food was good, priced about average, with some good specials and regular menu items that aren't on the menu in every other pub in the city. I'd be giving this a 4-star review if 3 things were different: 1. The service was beyond slow. It's a good thing we weren't in a hurry, because the food took forever to come out, and we had to flag someone down every time we needed something. 2. The bathroom was awful, though it looked like it was undergoing some kind of repair or remodeling, so that could be fixed soon. 3. The music was pretty bad. They kept cutting songs off in the middle and changing it, only to cut that song off and change it. I would go there again in hopes of it just being kind of an off day. I would blame it on the football crowd, but despite it being a match day, the place was not crowded at all. The food really was quite good, and I like how the booth we sat in had seats that were like sofa cushions. Plus, the shelves next to us were lined with interesting old books and cameras, which make the waiting a little easier. read more

Went here on Monday night as they hosted us for Glasgow Baking Club. They gave us the whole conservatory area as it was a quiet Monday evening in February and were extremely welcoming and allowed us to bring in our own cakes (kind of the point of baking club - we all get together with something we've baked for each meeting's theme and sample all the cakes and bakes while chatting and enjoying whatever drinks are on offer at our chosen venue.) Copious amounts of tea (£2) and lattes (£2.50) were consumed and we had a fantastic time down in our own little room with all our Valentine's cakes, biscuits and pies. The hot drinks all came with a little square of lovely tablet too, yum! We ordered drinks at the bar but they brought them all down for us so we didn't have to wait in the bar and the friendly waitress even offered to take a picture of us all. Have enjoyed cocktails here on a hen night before and have eaten a few times incuding a Sunday roast which was also lovely. I also ate here for a work night out one Christmas and the food and French Martinis were amazing! This was also the first place I ever tried a chai latte :) read more

Waverley tea rooms - as others have noted, not a tea room, but a pretty generic looking social animal pub, with its most obvious unique selling point its considerable and quite appealing outdoor seating provision. Generally speaking though, if the weather is ever good enough to warrant an outdoor pint/nibble then every single seat will be already taken! I returned to the tea room with my wife and wee baby daughter after a lengthy sabbatical to see a "new chef reboot" have only minimal influence in either atmospheric or culinary terms. I've generally thought of this place as somewhere with some moderately lofty ambitions and ideas, but without the slickness of execution to quite match. For example, the previous time we visited it was for the opening game of the 2010 World Cup, where we were promised for a couple of weeks beforehand there'd be an outdoor big screen to catch all the games. Well, midway through the match they were only just setting up the television, and despite their enthusiasm and friendliness it all felt a wee bit amateurish. Now, with a decent marketing campaign heralding the arrival of new (and apparently celebrated) chef Michael Kilkie, expectations were again raised. In the end the food we ordered was decent if unspectacular. A bacon and cheese burger for me and a pizza for the wife (baby brought her own) were tasty and pretty reasonably priced, but not to the extent that they really stood out from the rest. I'd be reluctant to recommend too highly, because like this place should learn, it makes a better impression to manage people's expectations than to promise the world and only partially deliver. It's a good southside resource though, and the soft play children's area only increased the likelihood that we'll be back, particularly when baby starts walking! read more

A sort of on the cusp of 3 - 4 really as I didn't order food, or use the bathrooms, but it was an overall pleasant experience. We had a rare day of summer today and were fortunate to find a free table on the upstairs decking area. It was really busy and staff seemed rushed off their feet. I couldn't tell if it was table service; I saw some people approach their tables with drinks in hand, but I also saw people with menus on their tables looking like they were waiting for a staff member to come over to take their an orders, so it was a bit confusing. After about 5 minute I decided to be lazy and check the drinks menu on their website, as there was lack of a drinks menu on the table. Wine.... wine.... more wine.... cocktails.... sharer boozy teapots.... ok, so if I want beer I'm going to have to go downstairs and physically use my eyes to see their selection. I'd seen a sign for craft beer so I looked at their draught options - which are usually cheaper than bottles and I suspected this would be a pricey place - and went for the £4.65 pint of Drygate IPA. Ouch. That's what I get for developing an attraction to craft beers. I got a little top up though after receiving my change and the beer had settled (and I'd already had a wee cheeky sip because I get nervous carrying drinks filled to the top further than 5 paces!). Was here a few months ago for a visit, We ordered one of their beef burgers with onion rings and fries, I can honestly say its the tastiest burger I've ever had from anywhere. would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a burger. As for an evening drinking venue, it does look a bit small (that's why I liked eating in it) so it might feel a bit cramped if it gets busy which I imagine it does. Despite the incongruous name (this isn't a tea room, not even a little bit), TWTR is an excellent little spot for lunch, dinner, and/or drinks. There is a wide swath of charming outdoor seating (with heating lamps!) and an elegant, welcoming interior. There is a tasty and affordable bar menu in addition to the tasty and affordable a la carte menu. Service is friendly even as it gets frenetic in the evenings (tip - if you want a seat get there before 8pm on the weekends). So, atmosphere, check. Food, check. Service, check. Another place that I used to visit for a Sunday lunch, the outside smoking area and the charming conservatory (not usually being used during the day), The Waverley has a habit of changing its menu, and not always for the more imaginative. These days, it is pretty much a generic burger and pub food place, but ti does do a few deserts that are worth the trip. As the other reviewers have pointed out, it does change atmosphere very abruptly in the evenings: as it gets darker, the music goes up and the stately ambiance is replaced by something more frenetic. IT has the typically beige but slightly pretentious decor of the G1 chain: this makes it relaxed during the day, but oddly bland at night. Sunday is an acoustic night, Monday has a quiz, so it is proactive in finding punters: however, they are often driven away by the prices. read more

We dropped in here today because we were nearby and the kids were STARVING!! You know the kind of 'I've not eaten in 30minutes now and I'm going to pas out' kind of starving. It was after 4pm and my wife and I were peckish too. Parking was a doddle, plenty space right outside, we actually got a space directly outside the front door! We wandered inside to a busy looking pub, and spotted one lady behind the bar, and another who seemed at the time to be taking care of every other table in the place. We were never greeted, so I went to the bar and asked if there were any tables, We were directed down stairs to an outside conservatory area, and after being seated for maybe 5 minutes the same waitress from upstairs arrived with menus and took our drinks order. The kids were given a fantastic activity sheet/menu which they couldn't wait to get stuck into, except there was no crayons available for them, so they had to use their imagination I guess, that lasted about 30 seconds! We looked over the menu and settled on a burger with peppercorn sauce and calamari, and macaroni for the kids! I was actually pretty excited, it sounded delish!! The kids were hungry, cranky and did I mention hungry? We waited 30 minutes on our drinks arriving, (our food order had still not been taken at this point) and after that long in a restaurant I'd be expecting my food to arrive, not to still be waiting on our drinks! We ended up leaving without paying for our non existent drinks and went for a wholly unsatisfying KFC. Totally disappointed! read more

Steak and ale pie was absolutely delicious and hit the spot on a cold night. Pastry was fluffy and perfect, filling was rich and meaty with a distinctive ale flavour. Staff was very friendly and offered a wee taste of their craft beer when we couldn't decide which one to have. Sticky toffee pudding was excellent too - served hot (with single cream instead of ice cream upon our request) and was delicious too. We'll definitely be back. read more

I'm just back from lunch with a friend at Waverly Tearooms and I definitely won't be back. On arriving, no one was there to greet us and we had to find someone to ask if we could sit in the glass extention. Despite now knowing we were there it took 10 minutes to give us menus and a further 20 minutes til our starters arrived. Our main courses appeared an hour and 15 minutes after first arriving and definitely weren't worth the wait. The meals were bland and not at all what we hoped for. It's a shame because the decor in the tearooms is nice and fresh and the menu had a reasonable selection. Nice decor isn't enough to make me return though. Really disappointed :( read more

Have visited this fun restaurant/bar a few times and have always had a great experience. The staff are friendly and helpful - particularly when one of us is extremely picky and we had a 3 year old with us! The pakora starter is lovely and spicy, the risotto was creamy and rich. I had the fish and chips - the batter was crispy and the fish moist, the chips were delicious and I generally think this was the best fish and chips I've had! One of us had the vegetarian fish and chips (which is beer battered halloumi) and she's been craving it ever since! And the cocktails were too delicious to stop at one. As it was a sunny afternoon in Glasgow we decided to go out for lunch which turned into more like a dinner, we shall call it Dunch!! And of course as its so close to the word brunch alcohol should be involved! My partner Jen suggested we go here which was fine by me as its been in my sights to take her to this for awhile. After a fruitless search for a seat in the sun we opted to go inside and order a couple of drinks whilst we perused the menu. First i ordered cider which i was told there was none of. They have alot of drinks on offer but unfortunately our first choice of cocktail was scuppered as they had no peach liquor to add to id. This was then rectified when we ordered our second round of drinks so not sure if it was actually out or they just had to go an a merry quest of adventure to find it. We had to ask a second time for menus as i believe they thought we were going outside to sit and could look at the menus out there. I ordered a great staple of the fish tea. This came with delicious chunky chips, the fish was haddock and the batter was golden and crispy. On the side we had whole peas and some tartare sauce. The dish was tasty but the peas slightly too hard which was a little disapointing. After this we had several more cocktails which were tasty enough but a little on the sour side for some of them. We managed to get a place outside stand which was like a little pagoda around a tree with somewhere to put your drinks and really nice to chill out at in the sun. This is a really nice wee place, nothing spectacular or different but a great place to spend time in the sun. Only a 3 star due to the menu problems, no cider to be seen and the confusion with the cocktails and hard peas. Id definetely go back but possibly on a quieter day. I just moved to Shawlands and was looking for a nice bar to relax at and some nice people pointed me in the direction of this place. Problem was it was boiling hot and the place was totally jam packed. Great atmosphere on hot days as it has seating outside but service is slow. A little bit grubby on the tables but it was very very busy. I'll go again but only when its quieter. read more

I love this place!! I'm speaking as someone who likes pub lunches and dinners, I have never been at night for a night out. But I love to eat here throughout the year, it is fantastic in the summer as the balcony which has many seats and tables is a complete sun trap and they also have a very cozzy feel to the inside which I love in the winter. It has a fantastic calm atmosphere and the staff are all very friendly. The food is really nice and not to over priced. The only thing I don't like about it is that children are allowed in, I wont mark the place down for that though as this is just my own personal preference I know majority of people this as a plus point I just don't find that screaming children create a relaxing atmosphere but hey that's the luck of when you get there if there are screaming kids or not. read more

Having been previously offended by the food and service in this establishment I returned on the invite of a friend for "Famous Sunday Roast". "Infamous" should be more appropriate for a cold, sad and lonely arrangement of scraps on a huge serving plate. We sent it back and eventually a slightly more generous portion arrived on red hot fizzing plates. No-one apologised and my friend had her wine glass nudged into her face as the waitress cleared up. Perfect spot. Just off Pollokshaws Rd in deepest brightest Shawlands, this bar/food place has a fantastic outdoor space that catches the rays for as long as the sun is out. An Open mic session on a Sunday night relieves the end of the weekend blues (beats the dreaded songs of praise theme tune, which is enough to throw you over the edge pre work). Of course it works in partnership with the infamous Ketchup so serves up some awesome burgers as well. TL:DR- Suntrap, live music, meaty burgers. read more

Utter disgrace. Lasagne £8.50? If not Farmfoods it was at best Iceland. Served with one small piece of nearly raw garlic bread. One of my locals(The Pandora) serves this for £.45 with two toasted slices of garlic bread and small salad garnish. Pizza? Italian sausage? 6 to 8 extremely small breadcrumb size bits dotted around, no garnish with it and then on requestong parmesan and/or black pepper the staff had to go ahunting. Surely the norm in most eating establishments to have this offered. Only became aware of the new kitchen regime on leaving and it would seem the place has gone downmarket as per the Sunday Mail. Have you guessed yet? Will not be back and am taking great delight in spreading the word about the place to all who will listen. read more

Good place to come if you are not in a hurry and they are not too busy. It's local to us so we come here a lot. HOWEVER if it's a sunny day and/or they have an event on, seems they never have enough staff to cover the demand. Food is good (esp the curly fries) and drinks are nice- expensive for Southside though. I think it might be under new management and they need to step up the planning for smooth service. There were some very grumpy folks in this past bank holiday Sunday- so much so that even though we'd bagged a booth we decided to leave before we got annoyed at the bad service. read more
