Hate this place. Just moved into the building across the street and the guests are always so loud. I was taking a walk and tried to get a water and he's acting bougie like "nuh uh you have to have an id" even though I've been here before. They break the legal noise ordinance every night this place is open then their staff wants to be racist and sadidy on top of it. Gives me a permanent migraine and is unsure because I've paid a lot of money to live in this building so far. Manager needs to train bartender working 10:20 pm on friday july 25th on customer service and not showing disorderly conduct from guests. read more

Yep, I'm big into this place. A boy I know moved just down the street, and this become his go-to neighborhood watering hole. I'm happy that he's introduced me. Lots of tequila! They have a good margarita list, though I typically stick with their most typical one, the Waypostarita. It's made with an orange-peppercorn tequila and some sort of orange liqueur. Pretty dang tasty. The other varieties aren't really my cup of tea, but it's good to offer options, right? Oh, and on Mondays margaritas are $6 instead of $9! Taco Tuesday is in full effect, and both the tinga chicken and the carnitas are delicious. I'm not into tempeh, but if you like it, I bet theirs is good. $2.50 on Tuesdays, which is a buck off. There's typically some kind of programming and hanging out at the bar can get kind of loud. But open mic night on Mondays has been entertaining! The bartenders are all really friendly. Good staff here, for sure. The outside area is cute, with a funny little walking path. I'll have to spend more time here in the summer to properly understand it, but I like it! Remember the fun, fun days of basement shows? You can have that here, and a patio, and brunch, and competent bartenders. What's not to like?~! Part of the Waypost is literally a basement to an old wood apartment building. It could be dangerous to live in those apartments with a bar and a basement show every night! They do close the side patio early for noise with that reason, but the front tables on Williams are open nights for the duration. The evening food is simple. They do a good job on drink specials. The brunch is the food star. The Waypost has a good network of musicians for their basement shows and it is a gathering point for community groups in the dill pickle club and zine worlds. Fun medium sized dive bar with super friendly bartenders. Also, they have two slushie machines - few of their whiskey Cherry Lime Ricky did me in that night! Most patrons order Montuckys or PBRs so service is quick. They serve food as well but I didn't try so I can't speak to that. Cozy ambiance, slightly dark, like a cool party basement - I've seen people in the early hours (2pm ish) with their headphones and their PC just chillin', cheerful groups gathering for pints and a chat, craft cocktails being served, and a friendly vibe from patrons and staff. I bellyed up to the bar and had a local IPA in a mason jar. I had just the one, but was tempted to stay. Cute bartenders with charm. They host a lot of acts, music, and others. A decent spot to drink on Williams. Plenty of space, but it sure gets noisy. This place seems to maintain a loyal group of followers. I was expecting some top notch cocktails, but wasn't overly impressed with anything they had to offer. They have several house infused liquors, and they honestly were not all that either. Not bad and in no way was I super disappointed, but just not anything to get your hopes over. I will say I enjoyed the live music they had to offer on a Friday night. I stayed for 2 different sets and both provided nice vibes and added to the atmosphere. I would certainly consider coming here for live music. And finally, while I can't comment much on the food, I will say, WHERE WAS THE GUACAMOLE?! This place is one of my favorite bars, the staff is always super upbeat and happy to see old and new faces. Went for the inaugural Surprise Party Theatre and found a great place to hang out when I'm in the area. Comfortable and inviting, feels like you are hanging out with friends. I was feeling a bit head-achy when I arrived and it was cold and wet outside, so I decided to order a lovely Hazelnut Hot Chocolate ($3.25) to warm up and relax. And for nourishment I selected what I believe was called the Small Planet ($6). After scoring a Willamette Weekly from the well stocked book shelves, yes there were real books to choose from too, I sat at one of the tables and was soon joined by a friend. In no time the nice guy who took my order brought out my selections. I was delighted with a lovely plate that consisted of fresh sliced carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, two different types of hummus and a small serving of fresh avocado, all accompanied by a toasted bagel. Everything was good, the Hot Chocolate was just right in taste and temp, decadent and satisfying. And all of the veggies were great tasting, sweet, crispy, fresh, really tasted farm fresh, the tomato was so good I'd love to know where it came from. I'm going with 3 for now. I would have gone 3.5 if you guys would let me. Because I do indeed like this place.. but am I a fan? Maybe not yet. But maybe I will some day soon. The location is cool. The parking is non-existent. The layout is interesting... A small room at the entrance with 4 tables, allows for quieter conversations. The main area has more tables (some are picnic tables, I think). You kind of feel a bit exposed in the middle, but it's a social and festive feel. The bar is to your left - fairly wide, but sometimes there's not much room to stand. There's also a stage up front to accommodate live music - which is cool. But we were there to talk, and once the place got crowded, it was hard to hear, and just forget it once the band starts. There is an outside smoking area in the front. No heat, sadly, but it's pretty friendly and usually crowded there. The drinks aren't as cheap as I like during happy hour. I got the special drink on the board - a "fruit salad", it was $6. I didn't really like it. But I took it back to the bartender and asked him to add a little ginger ale and cherry juice - and all was solved. They were very accommodating and quite sweet and willing to chat. My friend had a hot cocktail. I didn't much like that either... But they have quite a few options on the menu and I will go back to check out some of them. We didn't eat there, but I must say that whatever I smelled when I walked in smelled divine! I wish I knew what it was. So, this place is cool... I wish it was easier to sit and cheaper to drink - but I'll be back. read more

I like this place. I just don't love it. Let's start with what I like. Their cocktails are really good. I had an old fashioned and a hot toddy. Both were great for the price. Their food was pretty good too. I ordered a plate of happy hour nachos for $6, and I feel like I got about $30 worth of nacho. Big heaping plate with chips, cheese, salsa, etc. THAT is what you should get when you order nachos. I know I'M not kidding around when I do. The ambiance is overwhelmingly hipster, but I feel like you expect that. There's plenty of space and comfy couches everywhere. There's even a patio that's open when the weather is good. The one thing I do not like about this place is a pretty inconsequential and judgmental thing, but I really don't care. In my experience, the staff is SO HIPSTER PRETENTIOUS. Like, to a degree that makes me post about it in a review on Yelp. Some people don't mind that, but I do. Mainly because it's stupid. Man, I honestly don't have anything to say that hasn't already been said, but I had to give it the five stars it deserves. I was a little hesitant to come here because I can get intimidated by overly hipster places, but this place has a very unique, comfortable charm that is welcoming to all. I love the ambiance, the patio, the cocktails, and the tacos. They also seem to play all the music I want to hear just when I want to hear it. Sometimes you can get to where you want at the right moment. And sometimes you walk in as the band just finished. As is life. Got here after seeing the Blazers wrap up their round one series win. Traffic was crazy and public transit was packed so we took a stroll from the Moda Center. Wasn't awful. Got there and as I mentioned we just miss the band. They stuck around and hung with their friends but that was it for live music that night. But as is life you can cry about it or make the best out of it. We stayed around for a couple of rounds. The played some nice toons. The beer selection was pretty good. And I dig the low ceiling. Gave the place a real authentic feel. Wish I caught some live music but I still enjoyed myself. On a bright Portland Parkway, Cool wind in my hair, Warm smell of espresso, rising up through the air- Up ahead in the distance, ...I saw a sweet cafe sign, My head grew heavy and my knees grew week I had to stop for awhile. There she stood at the counter, Pouring a beer, and I was thinking to myself Thank God I made it here, Then she poured me some water, and showed me the way, There were voices from the chairs outside, thought I heard them say: Welcome to the Williams Waypost, such a lovely place, such a lovely place... plenty of food here at the Waypost, Anytime of year, you can find pork here... This great little coffee shop has good food (ham on a bagel, so wrong, but so good!) good coffee and all the charm a cafe should have. I was biking up Williams flagging and there they were- an oasis of charm and smokey pork goodness. I do not often come that way, but when I do I know my coffee stop will be here. read more

On my actual birthday, I went to The Waypost. I had a Groupon burning a hole in my pocket, uh smartphone, so I decided to give the place a shot. The food was decent enough. I had the plantain tacos. The tacos were nice and spicy how I like. I only wish you got a bigger portion for the price. My Groupon deal was for 4 "infused' drinks. I was thinking something fancy. My friend said "girl, all that means is a mixed drink." Oh. ha, ha! The restrictions with the Groupon deal was that you could only pick drinks listed on the chalkboard behind the bar. There weren't that many options. I decided to try the cucumber vodka just to be different. Ick! My next drink I got the jalapeno spiced something tequila. Now, that was better.... The staff was okay. The thing about The Waypost is that it's symbolic of what's wrong with Williams Street. The pushing out of a poor/working class community of color for new middle class white residents clueless about the neighborhood, or know but don't care. The Waypost will probably be a place I will never go to again because it was hard to be inconspicuous. Also, when I showed the bartender my Groupon, he made sure to click the "redeemed" button on my phone. I guess he was trying to make sure my black/brown crew didn't come back. Just joking. What a lovely little place. As close as I live to The Waypost, I'm surprised I had never been. At first it can be a bit confusing to get into the place since their sign hangs above the door for the neighboring business, but one of the workers was sitting outside having a smoke and informed me of my mistake. Apparently it happens relatively often. I was happy to see that they offer a variety of Foxfire teas, which I'm a huge fan of and I tend to have a hard time finding them. I ordered the lemon myrtle tea, which was served promptly and courteously. After a few hours of sitting their with my face buried in my laptop, I got hungry and ordered one of their gardenburgers and some of the spiced beet soup. The gardenburger wasn't really a gardenburger per se, but more of a gardensandwich. It was still quite delicious, though. The beet soup was amazing, and didn't have that gross overbearing vegetal flavor that beets sometime have. Anyway, I'm a fan of this place and I'll definitely be back sometime soon. First of all, this is a neighborhood joint. It's not a destination bar that the "in" crowd travels across Portland for. That said, I found it when I lived right around the corner, and now that I've moved across the city, I still drive back here because everything about it is perfect. The food here KILLS IT. So good. Mexican influenced, always fresh, filling, tasty!!!!! The beer selection is small but good, the cocktails are unique and great! The staff is quirky in the best way. Nice quiet place for a drink or brunch. There is a outer area with a couple of tables, chairs, shelves of books and board games. In the main area are tables and bar. I had a great experience just having brunch with a friend. I had a bloody mary and a breakfast burrito. We sat there for a couple of hours and started indulging in some of the local beer from the tap. After a walk around the neighborhood we came back, sat on the couch and had coffee. I don't think there is any other place in Portland that holds so much magic that it streams out of the front and side doors and flows into the street and side garden. COZY POT PIES are my life bread, and their signature drinks are my reason to live on. If the lights were any more enticing I'd think I was still in my bedroom at home, except surrounded by the best folks and always running into more friendly faces every time I am about to open the door that keep me sticking around for more. I spend a good four days a week here and they don't mind one bit. The folks who work here are friendly and helpful. The sandwiches have all been good, especially the one with hummus and carrots and they all come with a side of carrots, which makes me especially happy because if there are chips on the side, I will eat them. Wifi, comfortable chairs, quiet in the days. I've never been at night, but they're often playing movies or shows like Fishing With John and always serving beers. Plus! Starting a life in Portland was not easy. The only place my wife and I could find to spend our first few nights here was in the backyard of a wonderful family who we found on craigslist. Not wanting to be in the way, we woke up on the first morning, walked a block to Williams and began to head north. We passed the Waypost, but since they don't open til 10 (their one downfall) we didn't even notice the place. However, the patio for said coffee shop/bar has three picnic tables, and then a wild garden. Next to the garden is a sign encouraging people to turn abandoned parking lots (like the garden we were looking at used to be) into food! Brilliant. Because of this, we waited til ten and chose the Waypost. I don't even know where to start. As soon as we walked in, we felt like we had found our place. I briefly noticed the amazing beer selection (I'm not from here, and am still shocked by the amount of places that serve good beer), but decided on coffee and some kind of breakfast. Both were phenomenal. The person behind the counter was more than kind; she made us feel like we were regulars or were visiting our aunts house. Coffee was great (and featured a free refill), food was great, and no one bothered us when we hung out there for a couple hours and both pooped in their comfortable bathroom. While there we noticed the chalkboard with weekly events. They all seemed pretty amazing, but that night was a Workaholics marathon. Needless to say, my wife and I went back- before ever going anywhere else once, we had been to the Waypost twice. We weren't disappointed. It was a small, close knit, group of people watching this marathon. Instead of a breakfast sandwich, I got some bomb curry and instead of coffee I had a few IPA's. Its been a few weeks now, and there hasn't been a three day stretch where the Waypost wasn't visited. If they opened earlier than 10, I would be there every morning for coffee and breakfast. I've tried multiple dinners, multiple breakfast, coffees, teas, and a bunch of their revolving beers and have never once been even slightly disappointed. If you can promise a Variety Show, complete with "Cowboys, Tap Dancing and Pretty Girls," have people line up halfway around the block and run out of tasty pancakes 38 orders later, chances are you're a hit, folks. This can definitely be said of The Waypost. The cafe is quiet, open and comfortable. There's a schedule of Coming Attractions on the wall, snuggly couches & a music library to peruse. I found this super enticing and comforting having travelled from San Francisco just to see something awesome. Our barista was nerdy, friendly and helpful. We chatted about the best places to eat donuts, awesome comics and an upcoming Waypost menu with dancing pancakes (rough draft). All in all, if you're looking to chill back to killer tunes, chat with some awesome peeps or rock an amazing Banana Chocolate Chip Muffin, you've got the right place. It's mellow, low key, and perfect for a performance space for a singer/songwriter. They usually offer a daily drink special, which is really unique and fun. They also offer a full bar, beer on tap and some pretty tasty food options too. I havent been to the space when its not being used as a venue, but overall, I'd say it's one of the better venues in the Portland metro for a single performer to use! read more

I usually go here in the evenings (now that they are open until 10pm!) and occasionally hit an afternoon, especially if I'm in the area and need a quiet place that has free and reliable wireless, and a guaranteed space to sit. The place is quite spacious and has regular tables, couches, old movie theater chairs- whatever you need. They have good turkey and veggie sandwiches, vegan soups, pastries, coffee, beer, wine... Since I'm a big wino...I mean aficionado, I'll mention the wine: they offer one white and one red varietal: $5 each for a decent pour- but this isn't any Cali two-buck chuck. The varietals are usually pinot gris and pinot noir, but occasionally vary, and are ALWAYS GOOD. I will almost never say this about any place (even the places I've worked). The person who picks out the wine knows how to get a bang for his buck and pass it on. I often go Thursday nights, when they play a double-feature movie at 7pm. My biggest complaint is that the late-night snacks on Thursday nights are always grilled cheese. I love grilled cheese, but wish they would mix it up or expand. read more

This is one of my neighborhood spots. I wouldn't call it a vegan place though. I'm vegetarian and I can only eat a handful of items on the menu. Let's be real though, I go there for the booze. Some of the best prices in town. One bartender can get a bit grumpy if he's in the weeds or you have a Groupon or! in the weeds and you have a groupon. Yeah, I was that guy once and man was he pissed at me. Only other con - it gets hot as hell in there in the summer. Better get there before post work happy hour or all the outside table will be gonzo. Pro in the con, the outside seating is in a local garden.
