Good for: -morning brunch (weekends) -working on the laptop (mid-day is best) -watching movies, listening to guest presenters, & catching live music in the closest to a house-show venue in town (evenings) -eating wholeslaw & other tasty and unique treats that seem more healthy than norm Not so good for having "business" meetings with suit type people; they seem really uncomfortable in this locale. read more

I have been slacking on my reviews lately. Grad School Financial Aid situations have take precedence. That being said, I am still out in the world trying new things. Several weeks ago, I walked several miles to the organic beer fest and came across this place. It is SO cute. I have since been there three times and it is always dead... why? Im not complaining... it is good for me. Good and decently priced beer and good coffee. They carry vegan cookies from Monkey Wrench. I haven't had any of their food because they carry the bagels with egg wash and have one vegan sandwich (I cant ever bring myself to eat at a place when I only have one option to choose from) and it has been too hot for a cup of vegan soup. Oh and they have a great outdoor area in the middle of a reclaimed parking lot that is now filled with flowers. Love it. I am really excited to find another cafe in this area of town so I don't always have to climb the hills on bike to alberta. read more

Vegan options yay! Tasty ones too, double yay! Came in for tea and stayed for events. This is a very DIY put together kinda place. Mismatched chairs and tables and local flavor everywhere. Displays of local art everywhere and a very warm and cozy feel, like a friends garage that has been converted to a cozy rec room. My friend and I enjoyed the atmosphere and our lentil soup and then the entertainment arrived. To our surprise that night was a night where locals were sharing comic strips they'd drawn and written, poems and prose. All of a sudden this small space was packed with adults mostly but a few little mini peeps. The crowd was enthusiastic, the beer was a flowing and the night was great. I had a vegan cookie and my tea and met some new people. This little place is right off Williams which is a one-way headed north and a hop a way from Pizza A GoGo, all of which is not far from Mississippi. read more

What a quirky and offbeat place. We were there on open mic night and there were some...interesting acts. We opted to sit outside. Definitely try their house-infused liquors. We had the strawberry sage brandy and the honey ginger bourbon and they were sooooooo good. We had them straight, not in a cocktail. Bartender was great. Very helpful. Also check out the vending machine. Highly entertaining. The location is the only issue. It wasn't super safe after dark. Go with a group. read more

This place is totally chill. Pass the time with good coffee and good enough eats by day, decent brews by night. I have only stopped in here to relax, read, surf, snack, and get my coffee fix on weekdays and been to their Socrates Cafe once on a Thursday night. This place gets my vote as the place with the best vibe around. The Waypost feels like a pair of old cutoffs and a straw hat from a 70's John Denver album cover. It's all groove, no hassle, no haste. Arty, eclectic, junky, but not quite comfy. While the effect on the eye is cozy, there is a scarcity of comfortable furniture, which should be easily procured for cheap at the same yard sales which coughed up the present visually pleasing cacophony. I had their turkey club which was much as I would imagine my great grandmother might have served my grandfather, only on bread bought by my sister. Bland, flavorless innards (was that ice berg?) on a gritty, gravelly sliced bread. I won't let this one sandwich be for me the last word here. I suspect their soups are pretty good and will give one a go before the weather warms for good. I'm also be eager to check out the scene on the weekends. read more

Love this place! Everyone that works here is so nice, helpful and funny. I host my book club there on Thursday evenings and they reserved a table for me when I called earlier that day :-) Super nice! Another bonus is their happy hour. Gotta love grabbin' a delicious infused-tequila margarita and some plantain tacos. Oh and there are vegan options, woohoo! They host a lot of events: music, Wares, community gatherings, etc. It's a pretty jazzy place, check out their website for updates. And those events are free! There is a suggested cash donation (I recommend pitching in) for the peeps performing. Beware though, in the summer it can get pretty steamy but that's why they serve chilled beer. There's a brunch on the weekends that starts at 10 am that I have yet to go to - I'll update my review once that happens! read more

First I'd say this place is more about the music and atmosphere than the food and drink. That being said I had the plantain (in the bowl-version rather than taco) version. The bowl itself was tasty, the tortilla chips on the side I left sitting there because they didn't taste like anything. I ordered a margarita it was middle of the road good. One thing I disliked is the bathroom smelled like curry and the funk of 1,000 hippies, maybe because they store mops in there? All that being said I would go back to hear a band play and get a snack and a beer but I'd time my bathroom visits to go to other nearby establishments if I could! :) read more

I like this place. It's about 1 block from la casa. And, as I have noted before, the closer you get --the higher the rating! Now, I can tell you for sure if it was not SO close to my home I would not be there two or three times a week. Actually I prolly wouldn't go at all. They serve Stumptown Coffee. Which gets a "bwomp-womp". And they have a teeny weeny menu (with good ingredients though, which is why I like to eat there). And some horrible horrible muffins. Truly, awful muffins. And some of the people who work here are not big on the "cleanliness" movement that is sweeping the nation. Which can be difficult when they are handling and serving your food. It seems fitting to the establishment to review the Waypost via metaphor. The Waypost has a very unique personality-- it's like that person we all know who wears comfy socks with obscure patterns and treats panhandlers with respect, is definitely quirky, sometimes a little too honest, but so comfortable with themselves and happy in their own world that most people can't help but respect and love them. For whatever reason, there exists in our population a special sub-sect of starched-collar individuals who don't feel comfortable around such special people because they cannot tolerate anarchic personalities. These people, too, are confused by the Waypost. The rest of us just get it. read more

This place has been my favorite coffee shop in Portland ever since I went for the first time. Atmosphere: The atmosphere is great, it's a place that you could chill in for extended periods of time and still not feel unwelcome, it's just THAT welcoming, the fact that they have a garden in the back and also events there are a major plus. Product: The coffee is decent, it's not the best in portland, by any means, but it's worth the money. The food. Decent Food selection, delicious and healthy. And did I mention that there's beer? Looking for brunch and stumbled on the Waypost. At first I was put-off by the broken down facade, upon entering I was pleasantly surprised by delicious smells, the light and open decor, the modern and sensible menu and the giant pick-up bar! I had my 20 month old with me and he loved old upright piano. Food was delicately cooked and fairly priced. Funky little cafe/coffee shop/music venue with eclectic decor and a laid-back, bohemian vibe. Had the Curry Tofu Scramble and it was really good. It had an earthy, wholesome flavor with just the right amount of curry spice. Filled the gap perfectly! There were a few interesting microbrews on tap, and a good selection of quality tea. It is a great place. I dropped by the place on the way to somewhere. I guess that is where it got its name. It is crafted as if it is a coffee house but it is more of a bar with food than the former. I had the tacos and the lightest beer that the barkeep could find. I took it. The tacos were good. The tacos are made in the traditional Mexican way. That means it is small but the meat is tender. The beer was nice. I would like to commend the owners and the staff of the place to make the place comfortable. It is a swell place to come to write or type on something. There is in alcove in front or a general room in the back. You can see the patio on the road. There is a place for bikes, good music, and comfortable chairs. I do like the method of how the place is lit - upside down lampstands. read more

It's taco Tuesday and I arrived hungry. Ordered tacos. Literally the TINEST tacos I've ever encountered in my life. 3.50 usually 2.50 on taco Tuesday. It's one growth stunted corn tortilla taco with about 3/4 oz of filing. I checked in with friends who had been there longer and they agreed with me so it wasn't just a fluke serving. El Nutri on Alberta has two tacos for 1.75 that are also way better. I don't know what is going on here. Had to leave because I was a hungry hippo but also wanted to spend money on booze. Seems pretty stupid to have small tacos ever considering how cheap they are to make. read more

We all ended up here instead and the bartender gave my friend an old fashioned that he raved about. I go there all the time now. The Waypost is an Arizona-themed pub with shows, vegan food, a full bar and plenty of outside and inside seating. There's a lot to love about them. They even offer one of the cheapest brunches you can find in Portland that's still made with quality ingredients and skill. Prices are $4.50-$8. That's pretty rad, guys. They infuse their own liquor, which is fun to play around with to spice up your standard whiskey soda or vodka tonic. The ginger-honey bourbon and honey-oat vodka are my favorites. Their signature cocktails are pretty clever too, like the "Daddy's Horchata," which adds rum to horchata with a fresh cinnamon stick. I was pretty content drinking that out in their patio, which is basically a garden. It's pretty cozy inside too-- the decor is eccentric and fun. I love this place. They host small shows at night in the small space off Williams and serve coffee, tea, beer and wine- and some small snacks. Also they have a calender of small events that I suggest you pick up when you are in there: movie showings (normally documentaries or political films,) and random music and arts shows. I like to study here as well, spend a couple of hours from morning until afternoon, drinking coffee and then beer. It is pretty quiet, not too many people which is a nice respite from the other coffee shop haunts: Stumptown and the Albina Press. read more

The Waypost is my favorite weekend spot. I walked past it every day for 2 years and always thought it was a vintage clothing store that hipsters drank beer in front of. It is the coziest spot around. It feels like a hybrid bar/coffee shop. The staff make you feel welcome on day 1. I expected that it might have a "members only" feel since there were so many regulars. It was quite the opposite. Every one of the staff made me feel like I had been coming for years. The menu is small but I love everything I've ever had. The next part of my review might sound pathetic. Yesterday I had breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the way post without ever leaving. And they didn't treat me like I was weird (at least not to my face). They make you feel so comfortable that you don't notice that you've spent the entire day there. I love this place!!! read more

Its Sunday morning, and that means BRUNCH TIME. My boyfriend and I biked down the street looking for a good local brunch, Waypost just happens to serve something. We can't believe they actually serve a full course brunch meal. The gal behind the counter made us both two plates of fried potatoes, egg scramble (really tasty, spicy and sweet), and toasts (dave's killer bread with butter). All that for $7 each. Pretty cheap. Though I think their menu changes from time to time. The chai latte was good too. I think it was Dragonfly brand. We biked home satisfied. We'll definitely come back again. read more

The bartender wasbso helpful and attentive! I thought the place was 100% vegan, but he told me it wasn't in a very kind way and proceeded to tell us about all of the vegan options on the menu. When given the choice to pick literally anywhere in Portland to head out to and grab a beer on a week night, I'll always pick the Waypost. The crazy thing is I can't really explain why. Maybe it's how cozy and low-key/unpretentious this place is. Maybe it's the great prices, the food (far more satisfying than your average bar menu), the clientele (I note many regulars here) or the overall atmosphere... but something about this place just does it for me. I'm glad places like this still exist in Portland. read more

Odd... I wrote a scathing review of The Way Post a few months ago. It's no longer here, which is too bad for unsuspecting customers... I was there with my husband. We like to support local, independent coffee shops and explore all different ones in Portland.The service at The Way Post was terrible. The person behind the counter was incredibly rude. It was a guy, and he was just terrible. I remember asking what kind of green tea he had-- and he treated me like I was some ignorant fool for asking. I asked where the napkins were and he just grunted and, scowled at me. So rude I wondered if he had mistaken me for someone else he didn't like. Anyway, there are too many cool local places in Portland for coffee or tea. Why support one where the people are mean? Way Post? NO WAY. read more

So instead I go to the coffee shop and pretend I'm at a friend's house--wIth the piano, board games, and window plants, it's not hard to do. I reviewed this place way back when it was still just a coffee shop. It has since become a full on bar and music venue. Every time I'm in the neighborhood (which is usually when I'm giving blood at the red cross right across the street) I stop at the Waypost. The atmosphere is always inviting and homey - the owners' creativity can be seen in the design of the place - the drinks and food are always detailed and wonderful. I could it here all day long with a book, some of their fabulous tacos and refreshing cocktails. read more
