They have a consistent reputation for booking small musicians. The bar staff and door staff were responsive to me. I had conversations with new friends. I really like to support local establishments, but Turn! Turn! Turn! makes it tough to do so. While this establishment wasn't at all to my liking, I'm sure that many will find it quaint, charming, and quite to their liking. To me, though, it just misses the mark. First off, the front entrance door has a very big sign stating that it is ONLY to be used by the bands, and that customers must use the side door. It took a bit to find the side door, because there is NOTHING on it indicating the name of the business. There's no window, no store hours, nothing to confirm that one has found the customer entrance. This is VERY uninviting, and seems to relegate customers to being second-class citizens right from the start. The interior is dark, and seating is universally uncomfortable. One side of the tables' seats is a basically a long wooden backless bench that serves as basically a stoop under the windows, and if you lean back, your back would be against the window. The other side have chairs with their backs to the stage. So, seating is TERRIBLE if you want to see a band perform. You'll also see old vinyl records for sale, which seems quirky for the sake of being quirky. The service was a mixed bag. The employee to helped me was helpful, kind, and friendly. The other employee, and it really pains me to have to say this, literally reeked of BO. This is NOT what I want if I'm having food or a drink, and I was happy that he stayed behind the bar, and that my seat was far enough away that I didn't have to smell him that frequently. The food menu is tiny, and focuses on being vegetarian. I opted for a rice / bean bowl with Jalapenos and meatballs (as an add-on). The beans and rice were cooked perfectly, and the dish thoughtfully had tortilla chips which made for a nice textural contrast. The meatballs were not good, though, tasting as though they hung around in the refrigerator for longer than they should have. The sound was kept at a comfortable level for the performance, which was nice, but I left very early because the establishment just wasn't a comfortable place to be. read more

A great little stop for anyone on the move. And important thing to know is that Turn Turn Turn is actually bin a shared space. The morning belongs to a coffee shop and the afternoon is to the bar. Turn is located right off a bicycle superhighway, which is actually how I discovered it (right on North Williams) and as it is at a stoplight, you can't help but be curious what is inside. The interior is small and cozy and quite welcoming in a very Portland way. A small selection of curated beers greets you as you enter along with a brief but effective menu to pad your stomach into your next drink. As the evening moves in, music of various types (dj etc...) Will be your entertaining options and in the lead up, an eclectic selection of music is playing for you and your friends to enjoy. Although small, there is some seating outside which honestly doesn't get as loud as you would think. I can say that you see a lot of places like this on the East side, but this one has the best melding of price, location and menu. Absolutely well worth your time. read more

I rolled in 12 minutes before closing, hoping to grab a sandwich to go, as I was in the last 1/4 of my road trip from San Francisco to Seattle. My care taker was friendly and agreed to fire up the hot press to make a Friday's Child, hot sandwich for me to take with me. They usually shut down food an hour or so before closing, but she didn't want me to go on hungry. It looks like I may have missed the night's live music. If it were earlier, I would have loved to hang out at this music-bar. It harkins back to the ... 70s, with actual turntables spinning vinyl records. Definitely "retro". They have old albums and clothes for sale. There were conventional hipsters hanging out, but the retro atmosphere reminds me that hipsters are the retro-hippies, and looked quite at home here. The pressed sandwich was very good. It had a nice crispy crunch followed by a nice mix of flavors (cheese, tangy peppers, pesto, etc). It also came with some crunchy potato chips and a homemade slaw. It hit the spot, the first food since breakfast, at 11pm. Now, only three more hours on the road. read more

ADORABLE. Totally acceptable drinks made by the cutest bartenders on the planet. This place keeps evolving and getting better and better, so I encourage everyone to check this place out at least once. It is so a music venue that I enjoy going to when I just want to relax. Swing/Jazz here is awesome, and there's even a tiny bit of a dance floor. Super romantic atmosphere in a great location. Great spot! Tasty chickpea dip and a bunch of really cool records. Imagine the shop from High Fidelity with less pompousness and beers on tap (the Cascade Lakes Mosaic IPA was delicious). I'll definitely hit this place up next time I'm in town. read more

We went with our 20-something kid to see a show here. It was exactly what we had heard. A cute thrift shop with a simple sandwich and snack menu and a basic bar. The show sold out by 10:00 or so, so some of kid's friends had to wait to get in. We had neglected to get cash for the cover before we got there, so we had a few blocks of walking to find the nearest ATM. The bar does take credit cards, but it'll move faster if you have cash for them too. Space is a little tight when sold out. Plenty of elbow room at the back but not enough space for the crowd to sit or get to the bar and visibility is restricted once you get a few rows back. Bar is full (beer and liquor) but pretty basic- no fancy cocktails. The super friendly folks working the bar were a little overwhelmed by a big crowd, so drinks aren't necessarily quick. But decent prices on everything. Crowd was totally the 20-something Portland set that I expected, all friendly and a little amused at the presence of parents in the room. read more

The owner had a raffle going during the game and my lady and I scored a free beer and some chips and salsa! It was a thoughtful, fun little gesture that made the games even that much more exciting. I'm not that big into records but it seems like a pretty awesome selection. I do love the clothing rack, and last night I had an impromptu shirt shopping trip with a stranger while we waited in the bathroom line. I got really tempted to buy a $3 shirt (at the urging of my new friend) but decided against it at the last minute. One of the best things about Turn is their constantly rotating selection of beers. You won't find the same old beers, and there is a great variety too. The wine shrub is awesome too. Turn is definitely a welcome addition to my hood! read more

A cute place to chill and have nice drinks in NE PDX. I am in no way vegetarian, but I had the vegan chili and it is SO GOOD. I am also not a big fan of slaw but they have this home made slaw that they add to the chili as an option and - believe me - you WILL want that option. This was in the top ten record stores in Portland Oregon by the Oregonian newspaper. My friend and I love to browse through record stores to try to find musical treasures. This quant little place is more of a drink establishment than a record store. There were very few records at all. If you're looking for records I'd go somewhere else. They had a large selection of beers. The food was okay, but all the choices were vegetarian or vegan. We are neither... So we had hummus... Safe bet, and yes it was good. Even with some weird pickled peppers... Odd in my mind, but tried it anyway and it... wasn't bad. They offered these pickled peppers with most of their choices. They were spicy but not too hot. But, mind you, I'm a wuss when it comes to HOT food! We went as a spur of the moment based on the fact I'd driven by a few times. They had live music that night. When we first walked in there was a band playing their last song. They ended as we were ordering our drinks. Then came the fun part. There was a man there, 45ish... playing some weird mix-music... Basically scratching CD's/discs so that they sounded like a VERY LOUD dialup/fax tone. It was terrible! Luckily you CAN take your beer outside, so we did. We could still hear the tune, though at a much lessen pitch. Oh boy, I can still hear that screech and it was just dreadful! Not his music per say, but the tone itself. We came back in once he finished and another couple guys got up with their guitars. Turns out on of their friends was in the audience celebrating a birthday so that made for a fun time! After a couple drinks and our dip we made like babies and headed out! ;) Oh and they sell records. If you're into that they seemed to have quite the selection - maybe 100 or so discs... Maybe more. The album covers lined the walls. The lighting was low. The feeling of the room was good. The crowd seemed like couples or groups. I've been here three times, and each visit is better. They now have a full selection of liquor in addition to beer, the service is always friendly, and it's a great place to watch shows. You can also browse the vinyl selection or check out a rack or two of vintage clothes. This place could hardly be more perfect. Loved the beer selection and knowledgeable barkeep. Bought an amazing Pat Boone LP and a terrific coat for my wife that was like new. Pint #2 was spent chilling with some vintage rock mags while the Blazers went into OT on the pull-down screen. The friendly staff and more-comfortable-than-your-living-room ambience made it very hard to leave. Returned the next night and was treated to some highly original live music. Sampled the food (tasty) and confirmed my suspicion that indeed EVERY beer on the menu was of the highest caliber. Turn! Turn! Turn! has very quickly become a mandatory stopover whenever I'm in Portland on business, and those who call it local are very fortunate indeed. Eclectic little record slash thrift store. Very accommodating owner who offers six draft beers and some nice menu items. All types of seating....lounge on a couch or bring in your laptop and blog away at one of the mosaic tiled type tables. Something for everyone here. Feel free to just pop in and browse the clothes rack. They have a record listening station, too. I drank the Green Flash Road Warrior Imperial Rye IPA and noshed a couple chips and salsa. The salsa was Hot Mama Salsa brand produced by a local woman. I love spice, the hotter the better. This salsa was Medium and it had a great kick to it. Nice job! Where do I begin. This place and the owner are so amazing. Every little corner had something that I wanted to buy. Turn! Turn! Turn! has a great record selection. At first, I thought the books on the shelf were there only for a quick read---turns out, you can purchase them. There's a great selection of beers, especially since I'm a porter/stout drinker. From one visit, I bought two records, one book, and a jacket (altogether less than 15 dollars). Seriously, such an awesome place. read more
