What hasn't been said about the world famous Wedge. My first visit here was in the early 60's. Although it gets much bigger, I have never dared to body surf here in anything over 10'. Dropping into water that's only 12" deep is scary! read more

My Husband always talks about this beach the wedge for its great waves to body surf. Being a OC native and never being here, I had to go and see what was so great about it. The waves are awesome here. For some reason the jetty harbor creates these wedge like waves that can go both directions right and left rather than normal waves going one direction typically. TO blend in grab some fins and hop into the water. Nobody here boogie boards or has a surfboard, its strictly body surfing and fins. Most body surfers appeared to be teens and adults. The waves are massive at times so its uncertain what age would be appropriate to body surf, but it also depends on the child's aptitude in ocean water. Its best to know this place has been known to harm many of the inexperienced and experienced. read more

I had always heard about this place, and having been to the North Shore in Hawaii, didn't think the waves here would impress. Right after my first viewing, it was reported that the waves here had killed a man who got too close to a huge one. Watch from afar - it's more fun that way! read more

THE WEDGE... Heheheheheheee Wipe oooout! No, I do not mean a piece of imported cheese from France, I mean the famous body surfing spot in Newport Beach, CA. This spot which is right next to the West Jetty View Park is at the oceanside tip of the balboa peninsula and if you go here to body surf be prepared to get your body a little beat up and be prepared to miss the sand!!! Because the swells here are so strong due to the rock jetty's that have been made here, that at times with the proper swell and angle, this place is known to create waves as big as some seen in Hawaii!! My brother, boyfriend and cousins came here but I was a bit too intimidated to go and try out the waves myself, so I sat on the sand and took pictures and videos of them instead, and whenever they came out you could see red splotches of pain on their skin from the force and power that is THE WEDGE. You definitely cannot turn your back on these waves, or even try standing on the beach too close to the water without being knocked over by the waves here. The sand is full broken pieces of rocks and shells here a little more than in other parts of newport, but that is only because the waves are that much stronger here that they break everything in sight! ha ha It truly is a magnificent sight--there are skim boarders here and boogie boarders here and of course body surfers, and thank goodness they have a lifeguard here too, because we heard that some people have left here with spinal cord injuries--hence another reason I was a chicken and didn't go in!! But I had just as much fun watching it from the safety of the sand! And I would go back and watch it all over again! read more

Huge waves..clean sand with a fine texture (great for sand castles hehe)..gorgeous views..tons of sand crabs for the kiddies to find. Sand here forms into shallow dunes, adding to the beauty of this beach. Access is a little annoying, since it has no parking lot. But you just park up the neighborhood streets. Parking can be hard to find on hot summer days, but is plentiful in the evening and off-season. Parking is free, no meters. No restrooms. It's rarely super busy since it is so out of the way and is just a small corner beach, unless you want to walk up the beach a ways. Also, the rocky West Jetty just south of the beach and is fun to walk out on, see the seals, or even fish from it in the evening. Or just relax on a bench at the connected West Jetty View Park. Bring some lunch and watch the boats go in and out of the harbor. This is one of my favorite beach spots in SoCal. Visit with your honey, enjoy a sunset and just chill. read more

I love the wedge, I've lived right near the beach my whole life and this spot has gotten me through everything- broken relationships, family issues, fights with friends etc. I've come here to contemplate, get drunk, or just hang out. However despite my personal attachment to the spot, I have to admit that the purpose it serves for swimming is not as... good as say, 32nd street, where the waves crash out further and the sand is finer, not as coarse. For my own personal reasons, I would give the wedge a 5. But because of reasons mentioned above, I have to give it a 4. The sunset is gorgeous at night and the surfers are amazing to watch during the summer. If you ever make it down to the peninsula, this place is a wonderful and beautiful spot to hang out. read more

Love this place, it reminds me of Sandy's Beach in Hawaii. The waves break close to shore, so if you eat it on a wave, be prepared for some pain! Waves vary in size. Sometimes there are only 1 foot waves, other times it's 3-5ft....I want to go when it's 20 ft waves! you can feel the ground shake when the big waves crash! it's awesome to watch the boogie boarders and surfers ride those waves. Sometimes you can see seals or dolphins out there too. No public bathrooms This place is very peaceful, quiet, and relaxing. You can walk on the jetty or watch boats sail by. read more

This is one of my favorite places in the country. I used to go to college at UC Irvine so I was lucky enough to be able to body surf the wedge on a frequent basis. Whats so cool about this place is that there is a Jetty that shoots out into the Ocean and when the wave comes into shore, it kareems off the jetty and creates this bigger double wave. About twice a year it can get up to 20+ feet which is simply amazing to just go and watch the professionals. This is one of those places where I can just sit and watch the ocean for hours. Not for the weak at heart. My first time to the Wedge was mind blowing. Waves you'd see at Pipeline Hawaii or Sunset Beach only difference is these are shore breaks! On big days you only want to enter if you are fish or have your fins. Just to survive the sets is an accomplishment in its own right. If you have the skills to drop in it will be one of the best barrels of your life. Proceed with caution. read more

Great spot to watch some body boarders get wrecked when the waves are 10' plus, but this is also a great picnic spot for an outside the box date. Bring some wine, some snacks, and a portable speaker to plug into your phone and your set.....your lady will love it!! Located at the southern most tip of the Balboa peninsula this famous bodysurfing spot is a great place to unwind, relax, catch some rays, enjoy the beautiful views, build sandcastles with your kids and watch some serious surf break onto the jetty. Be warned entering the water here is for expert surfers only as this place will chew you up and spit you out onto the jetty in a split second. We spent this past Saturday morning (9/25) here with out of town family in from the Chicago area and enjoyed the perfect morning with cool breezes, breathtaking views of the ocean and generally really peaceful vibes from all of the people out enjoying the day. This spot also offers prime viewing of the boats going in and out of the Balboa channel between Newport and Corona Del Mar. There were many people out exercising, walking their dogs, fishing off the jetty, etc.. The only thing missing was some big surf , but oh well, maybe next time... The beach itself is pristine and uncrowded (unless the surf is huge, like say 20ft waves...it happens). This spot personifies the best aspects of Southern California beaches. It's clean, not overcrowded, largely lacks that tacky tourist vibe, offers breathtaking views, and it's easily accessible with free street parking in the nearby surrounding neighborhoods. The only one negative I can think of is that there are no restrooms anywhere near this beach so be forewarned and plan ahead. read more

This beach has the best waves I've seen in OC, LA, or SD. Hands down. This is a really popular beach for skimboarders and shortboarders. The swells hit right near the jetty, and make these huge 10 foot peaks, and then mini peaks near the shore. The waves slightly crash into the jetty causing a current to push you away from the rocks, so it's not as dangerous as it could be (however there's been accidents). The Wedge is not for amateurs- everyone that surfs this spot knows what they are getting into. It can get very crowded too. There's plenty of parking on the street and near the pier if you don't mind walking. There's also lots of spectators. By far the best place to watch surfers. It's very entertaining. Bring your camera. read more

When there is a big swell, of course we hop in the car and drive to watch the waves roll in. It's so strange how something so simple can be so exciting! The last swell was amazing. This is where I go to refill my spirit and restore my serenity. I have had numerous once in a lifetime experiences here and captured many in photos. The wedge is a famous surf spot in Newport Beach. I visited five times this summer until I hit it on a day when the waves were breaking far enough out to catch them without being smashed into the sand. Some of the sets were twenty feet tall. A few insane people were body-surfing, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are a pro. I caught three medium sized waves of less than ten feet and that was good enough for me. There are always a ton of bystanders on the beach who come to watch the waves and surfers. Some of the older guys at the wedge don't take kindly to outsiders in the water and will argue with the teenage kids. Tensions can run high in the water because the wedge can be deadly. I've noticed a few "tough guys" who come down on the weekends and like to verbally abuse the younger kids when they get in the way, although I've never actually seen a fight. The waves do the only ass kicking at the wedge. read more

It's all about the south swells for some decent bodysurfing, but if a storm surge from New Zealand hits, LOOK OUT for the 15'-20'ers. Chasing The Wedge can introduce you to rip currents you may have never experienced before. L.A. news crews KTLA or KCAL always come out to monitor these situations. Unfortunately, in July 2009, a giant 10-wave set with 25' faces started to pour in as a bodysurfer drifted into the jetty rocks and drowned in the whitewash. read more

I've never seen anything so incredible as checking out the Wedge when the surf is really kicking. We went last weekend, when there were 20 foot waves, and it took us over 2 hours to get there from Aliso Viejo. Parking is a major pain in the ass, especially when the surf is high, so try to get in early. I could really just sit there all day and watch. Watching the waves is cool enough, but then add in some bad-ass surfers and you have hours of entertainment. A must-see if you're in the Peninsula area. read more
