What a lovely 5 stars experience from the food to the service to the decor to the ambiance. I booked an afternoon high team time with a few of my girlfriends and right from the start of making the reservation, I can already tell it was going to be a good experience as the reception took care of everything and even made good notes of my food limitations. We arrived 5 minutes late, but don't worry, the hotel provides valet parking for guests including tea time for $10 the first 3 hours. We stayed there an over 3 hours and it cost me only $14 dollars. It was $55 pp for high tea and each person gets to pick their own tea flavor and there's 3 courses of 2 tiers food trays that can be shared amongst the all the people. I got my own tray since I had certain food limitations. By the end of it, it was more than enough food and we were all extremely full, all 4 of us. Service was amazing and it did not feel rushed at all. Our server was very patient and timed every course so well and she even took multiple pictures for us. We ended up staying close to 4 hours just eating and chatting. The tea time is in the hotel lobby and it's such a beautiful and elegant environment with plenty of photo opportunities. This was a tough view to write. I have mixed feelings. However, on balance, I would not come back to the Westgate. On the plus side, this hotel is in an easily walkable neighborhood. Lots of coffee shops and restaurants nearby. There's even a Blue Bottle coffee a block away! The real plus of the hotel is they have a nice outdoor gym, including multiple pieces of cardio equipment and a full set of weights. You can have a complete workout at the outdoor gym on a nice day. The hotel also has a deal with a massive and high-quality gym just down the hall. You get access to this other gym for free as a hotel guest. I used it several times and enjoyed it. The rooms are small and the bed is comfortable. The reason I would not return to this hotel is because the rooms are not a soundproofed from the outside at all. Every night and every morning I kept hearing the trolley, bells, buzzing, and barking dogs. I was constantly woken up. Attended the Witches of Westgate Afternoon Tea here on a Saturday afternoon. The event is a hit. Upon arrival, the grand lobby is so beautiful. I love the blue seating area, it is immaculate. The walls and baroque decor throughout this hotel is fantastic, and just my style. The Witches Afternoon Tea was very well attended, even young girls dressed up like witches came with their moms, aunties, and grandmothers. They have a kids tea time menu also. The selection of 3 courses was nice. First Course: Assorted Tea Sandwiches Second Course: Delectable Scone with fresh whipped cream and strawberries side, Devonshire cream, and cranberry compote. Third Course: Assorted Halloween Petit Fours There were so many teas and my faves were: Earl Grey, Mango Peach, and Blueberry Merlot. They also have champagne, apple cider, apple cider mimosas, juices, and witches brew cocktail available. Beautiful time. The price is $85/person for this specialty themed tea time. I've been to a couple of the tea houses in San Diego. This one definitely takes first place for the most opulent setting! The moment I stepped foot into the hotel I could smell the fragrance of roses, and I was very impressed by all of the crystal chandeliers and the gorgeous velvet furniture. I thought that the three towers with savory and sweet offerings were fantastic. Definitely the food was top-notch. I was a little disappointed because I had called ahead and let them know that one person in my party is vegetarian and when I got there, they were not aware of that. I know it's not the server's fault and she was very apologetic, but it made our first course kind of discombobulated. My friend had to wait additional time to get a couple little sandwiches that were not meat based and they were actually just repeats of the other non-meat based items on the first tower. My personal favorite item was a little Gravalax and Caviar tart made with a little crème fraîche and some dill and placed inside of an adorable little waffle cone. The combinations of flavors and textures hit all of my senses in the right way. The teas that we got to try were very good as well, but they were out of several flavors, including the one that I really wanted to try. I went for the mango peach green tea and it was tasty. One of my friends got the raspberry herbal tea and it was the best of all of the teas that we chose to try that day. Makes me want to go back again to get some of that blueberry Merlot, herbal tea. I almost went for that and now I wish I had gotten it! Parking was very easy, underneath the hotel they have valet parking. They offer $10 for three hours if you were going to the tea and since no place to park downtown is free that's a good deal. This is definitely a tea I would return to. I really enjoyed my stays at this hotel. I've probably stayed here three times in the past year. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable. Many amenities and a very high end experience. Additionally, the best part that keeps me coming back is that you get to use the private gym next door! The gym has everything you could need and is really nice to work out in. The hotel can feel dated at times but i think it gives it a unique, classic feel and vibe. Well, well...what an absolutely delightful discovery! The hotel's bar has an amazing happy hour...I'm literally a happy hour expert in this area. The hotel has a small spot for happy hour and value is outstanding! They serve a decent Pinot noir, the shrimp cocktail's presentation is art. Today I had the mussels...I've eaten them all over the globe and these were easily 1lb, cooked to perfection, and the flavor was equally spectacular. What really makes this place, besides the amazing food, is a new edition in the bar area, Isaiah. He's attentive, confident, beyond pleasantly engaging, and because of my experience with him, I returned a second night. This evening I had the tuna tartar, not on happy hour menu, and still extremely reasonable and solidly good. The presentation for the couple of dishes I've had thus far, clearly pay attention to detail and create excitement. I'm in this area twice a month for work and it's my new GO-TO location. This hotel is awesome!!! It is so unbelievably cool looking inside and makes you feel fancy AF! It's equal parts fancy and spooky... felt like it could have literally walked out of the Titanic (which brings back the fancy.) The also filmed some of One Battle After Another here according to the lady at the front desk that checked us in - who was also just as awesome and absolutely hilarious. Wanted to love this hotel because the pool was genuinely wonderful, but overall the stay felt very overpriced for what we received. The positives: the pool area itself was beautiful and relaxing. The downsides: the rooms felt dated and smelled musty, and the hotel location felt uncomfortable at times. While I understand hotels can't control the surrounding area, walking out to dinner and seeing people near the entrance screaming and physically fighting was pretty jarring. Service was also disappointing. We ordered lunch at the pool and waited over an hour for a Caesar salad, only to be brought the wrong order (a Cobb salad). We still paid for it despite the long wait and mistake. Housekeeping was another letdown -- after the room was serviced, a full trash bag was left sitting on the toilet in the bathroom, linens weren't re-folded, and items like the shower cap/vanity kit weren't restocked. Small things, but for the price point, those details matter. Overall, this stay felt expensive for what was delivered. A few improvements in housekeeping, service, and room upkeep would go a long way. read more

The hotel lobby is beautiful. The fitness area is amazing and the pool on top of fitness area is great. The rooms are falling apart. On my first day I got locked in the bathroom, because the door handle didn't work. Thank God my husband was in the room. The toilet flushes supper slow. The hot water drips for 60 seconds before full flow comes through. The shower door could shatter at anytime as it is practically falling out of the wall. Speaking of walls, they are extremely thin and you can hear your neighbors conversations especially if they are drunk. We set our garbage can outside our room to be emptied and 6 hours later it was still sitting there. There is no microwave in the room and the refrigerator is extremely small so you are forced to eat their food. Their food is pretty good but very expensive. One night we called to see why our dinner never arrived after waiting for one hour. They said they thought it was a take out order and it had been sitting out waiting for someone..... they brought the food up to us. The food was cold and the one thing we asked for several times was ranch and that was not included. We asked if they would recook our meal but they said the kitchen was closed. The manager did say that we get that meal for free. The pillows are horrible, but the bed is firm. We will not ever stay here again. I think we will be sticking with air bnb. read more

Located in downtown San Diego, Westgate Hotel is like a staying at a fancy Parisian hotel from the moment you step inside. Elegantly decorated with lots of French antiquities floor to ceiling, yet appealing and inviting. Service from staff are helpful but need refined improvement. Many areas; outdoor courtyard for dining within the hotel grounds are still under renovation and have not been open. Like the downtown area of many major cities, homelessness is apparent within a block and therefore, walking outside the hotel compound is NOT advisable for safety. One of the best features is the harpist who performs on the main lobby on weekends. Her music selection includes classical and modern and the sound of the harp in the air adds to the elegant flair of the Westgate Hotel, you'll feel as if you're at one of the salons at the Hotel de Crillon in Paris, but sans travel jet lag so just enjoy the soufflé and sip Rosé champagne. I was entirely impressed with this hotel. There is a historian named Cole who works in the restaurant who gave an amazing history of what you actually are seeing. I wish he would give tours! The hotel was build by a wealthy banker. He had some conflicts of interest and Unfortunately there were no laws against what he did at the time but suspicions Mr San Diego who gave so much to the community had to sell the hotel and his personal treasures within it. One beautiful thing though is that this hotel will live on. These treasures still dazzle the hotel and the hotel has kept the tradition of beautiful music in the lobby. It is also one of the few places you can go for a true High Tea experience. The harpist is so darling. I hope you get to go! Dave at the front desk is a treasure. The hotel parking was conveniently placed on the street with a very visible sign. Valet (is underground) was friendly and fast getting our luggage out the car w/bell hop. Our check-in process on Saturday was quickly and friendly. The lobby area was welcoming and clean. The room were clean and the beds super comfy! Room service was delayed so we opted to go downstairs and have brunch. Perry made sure our champagne and food was served in less than 10 minutes. The ambiance was beautiful. On a positive note, the interior and live music was lovely and the teas my sister and I had were great as well. Was the service good? Yes, she was very kind and refilled our teapots with hot water several times. In summary, I did not think the food was worth the price at all. On top of that there was an automatic gratuity of 20% - that I was not informed about at any point in time for a group of 2. While it has a dated look particularly in website photos it is a well kept Hotel. Staff are warm and efficient. This review is specifically for afternoon tea; I have not stayed as a guest nor used the amenities. I'm on a mission to take afternoon tea from every location in San Diego and always beyond excited when I got an ad on IG about the Whistledown Experience as tea at the Westgate was on my list and I love a good theme. TLDR: I loved it and want to return for their normal tea service! The lobby is a stunning venue and I love the almost "grand living room" with the seating. Very comfortable and the service was fantastic. The price included a complimentary glass of champagne, a 3 course afternoon tea, a pot of tea per person, and a small jar of a special themed tea blend to take home. There was a string quartet as well, which really elevated the experience. The savories were SO GOOD! Like the chicken salad tea sandwich was incredible and I liked that they added salmon to the standard cucumber tea sandwich to elevate it. There was a prawn appetizer that was incredible as well but honestly the first course was incredible. I'm still thinking about that scone. That scone is why I'll be back, I need it again. I wasn't a fan of the desserts (especially the rose macaron which tasted like eating potpourri), but the savories and the teas Beyond thrilled to have this experience (it seems to have completed sold out already, praising my algorithm for getting it to me early) and hope Westgate will bring it back when season 4 returns. read more

We booked this hotel for the weekend to celebrate our friends birthday. Being we are parents and never get a real vacation we were extremely excited, especially about the hotel as the website is spectacular. My boyfriend and I frequently travel with our kids so we always like to make sure we upgrade ourselves when it's just us. Seeing the description for an uncharge you can enjoy a "premium room" with ocean views. First impression is amazing. You drive into an ungrounded garage for valet parking and then take an elevator up to the lobby. This hotels lobby is absolutely stunning. Grand stair case. Chandeliers galore. Victorian fixtures. Such beauty. Check in was fairly fast. It wasn't until we got into our room that our minds completely changed. Our "premium view" was the top of an old building. Not a drop of ocean in site. We then receive a text from our friends who also were pretty upset, they didnt pay for the upgrade but their room had a mysterious door that they could not lock from their side. Funny enough we ended up at the front desk arpund the same time. And funny enough we both had pretty aweful experiences there too. We both encountered extremely rude and condescending receptionist who were unwilling to help. Ours made us feel aweful for even complaining. I kept trying to explain that we paid for an upgraded room and its definitely not a view id like to see. Im both instances the manager stepped in to save the day. They did put us into a "better view room" but with heavy stains on the carpet and no monetary refund or anything at all for the inconvenience. Our friends got a bottle of lemonade and a teddy bear. I did not cause a scene nor did I even raise my voice. I am in management myself so I simply explained our issue and it felt like it went to uncaring ears. Terrible customer service and terrible event management. I booked the Whistledown Tea experience on 5/22/24 for 6/22/24. After further thought and seeing other people post their experience, I decided to cancel. The cost of the experience just didn't seem worth it to me. So I cancelled my reservation on 6/17/24. The booking confirmation stated that there was free cancellation up to 48 hours prior to the reservation. I cancelled my reservation with over 48 hours. I waited until 6/19/24 to see if my refund was just taking awhile or process, but it did not. I tried reaching out to the hotel directly and was directed to the event manager's voicemail. I left a message and was hoping for a call back the next day. I didn't get a call back so I called my credit card to dispute the charge. Luckily my credit card worked with me but they did say they allowed the business 12 days to issue the refund themselves. So we waited 12 days for the hotel to reach out and refund me AND THEY STILL DIDN'T. After 16 long business days, I finally received my refund from my credit card. I would not trust my booking here again and would advise everyone to be very careful and considerate when making reservations. read more

We booked them in September for a December officer Christmas party and we had a private room with a piano then downgraded two days before to the restaurant when it was too late to explore other options and no piano. They tried to sell it as the restaurant would be closed off to the public BUT we had asked for privacy for awards and speeches which is why we booked the private room and they said the restaurant would be private. Throughout all of our thank you's and presentations - the staff was CONSTANTLY coming in and out interrupting us non stop. Then they also changed the menu the morning of without telling us. Awful experience. This is supposed to be a lovely long standing hotel that we paid to book in advance and was AWFUL. read more

Checked in on a Friday for an event on Saturday in the Gaslamp district. The appearance was that of a classic hotel. History claims Queen Elizabeth has been rumored to stay here. That being said. Knowing this was an old hotel I reserved my opinion of upgrades. Room is nice, beds comfy with four pillows Bathroom had one sink & shower was very dated. Leaky faucets & plumbing backing up in The only sink we had. Mini fridge was warm, did not keep drinks cold for us. A quick call to housekeeper brought us an additional fridge to set beside our furniture. FYI ice is only available in the lobby, around the corner from the front desk. Over all didn't use the spa, gym, or the pool. All the cool hangouts are in walking distance but I have to warn.... Just be mindful on your journey as homeless are hard to avoid on any walk around the Gas lamp district. Don't walk alone and be mindful of your surroundings. read more

The venue itself was gorgeous, and all of our guests told us that the food served was absolutely amazing (and we totally agree)! We worked with Tiffany on the event / catering team and she was incredible. She was so knowledgeable and was very accommodating to all of our requests to help make our wedding perfect. All of the hotel rooms that we and our guests used were also very nice and cute. My husband and I also attended afternoon tea the day before our wedding and it was such a special experience.
